1. Did you know that the first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 to celebrate Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage on the 12th of October? The citizens of Munich were invited to join in the festivities, which were held over five days on the fields in front of the city gates. 40 000 people were in attendance.
2. In the beginning, beer was not available at Oktoberfest. Alcohol could only be purchased and enjoyed outside the venue.
3. Oktoberfest has been cancelled 24 times because of disease and war. In 1854 and 1873, cholera epidemics forced the fest’s postponement. It was also cancelled during the Franco-Prussian War, WWI and WWII.
4. Did you know that Albert Einstein worked at the festival? He was employed as a trainee in his uncle’s electrical company, and the then-owners of the Schottenhamel tent decided that they wanted to be the first to take advantage of electric lighting, which is why Einstein was employed to screw in light bulbs.
5. Despite its name, Oktoberfest actually starts in the third week of September and lasts until the first Sunday in October. #Septemberfest
6. Only six breweries that brew within the Munich city limits are allowed to participate in Oktoberfest:
Hofbräuhaus München, Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu, Paulaner Bräu, Löwenbräu, Hacker-Pschorr-Bräu and Augustiner Bräu.
7. The mugs themselves are hot items at Oktoberfest. Security guards annually recover approximately 150 000 from would-be souvenir hunters. Many are not recovered: The Hofbräu tent alone averages 35 000 missing each year. The fine for stealing a souvenir mug is R600.
8. Glass steins were late to the party: It wasn’t until 1892 that beer was served in glass mugs. Traditional beer steins were made of stone and later metal, and while some of those are still used, they are far outnumbered by their modern glass cousins. 9. You can’t start drinking until the mayor says so. Since 1950, the festivities only begin when, at noon, twelve guns sound a salute and the mayor cracks open the first beer barrel, yelling “O’ zapft is!” (“It’s tapped!” in the Bavarian dialect). The mayor then hands the first beer to the Minister-President of the State of Bavaria.
10. In November of 2008, Bavarian waitress Anita Schwartz broke the record for most beer steins carried at once. Schwartz balanced 19 full beer steins—5 in each hand, and 9 positioned on top of these—and walked 40 meters without spilling.

“Bewys vir my waar ek dit ontvang het, ek het dit nie ontvang nie, so ek is nie aanspreeklik nie.” ‘n Sin wat ons daagliks hoor wanneer iemand reageer op ‘n aanmaning en/of dagvaarding. Ons het dit goed gedink om die lesers in kennis te stel van die Konstitusionele Hof se uitspraak in Kubyana v Standard Bank 2012 (5) SA 142 CC wat meer duidelikheid oor hierdie situasie sal skep. Die Hof het twee vrae gehad wat beantwoord moes word: Wat is die stappe wat 'n kredietverskaffer moet neem om te verseker dat die kennisgewing van wanbetaling ‘n verbruiker bereik voordat 'n verbruiker litigasie mag begin? Tweedens, wat moet die kredietverskaffer bewys ten einde die Hof te bevredig dat hy sy verpligting behoorlik nagekom het om lewering van die statutêre kennisgewing aan te bring. In terme van die Nasionale Kredietwet, artikel 130 saamgelees met artikel 129 word voorgeskryf dat kennisgewing aan ‘n verbruiker gestuur moet word na die adres wat die verbruiker gekies het, synde sy domicilium adres, waar hy betekening van alle kennisgewings sal ontvang. Die Konstitusionele Hof het bevind dat indien ‘n kredietverskaffer ‘n kennisgewing stuur na die adres wat deur die verbruiker gekies is, die plig op die verbruiker rus om die Hof te bewys dat hy dit nie ontvang het nie en dat dit nie ‘n regsplig op die kredietverskaffer plaas om die Hof andersins te bewys nie. DIt is dus belangrik dat verbruikers, indien hul van adres verander, dit duidelik en skriftelik onder die aandag van die kredietverskaffer moet bring. So in die toekoms verseker dat jy nie onverwags betrap word waar aksie teen jou ingestel word sonder dat jy kennis dra van ‘n dagvaarding en by gevolg vonnis teen jou toegestaan word nie.

1. Simply dab your stamp on the ink pad and test on paper to see if you need to dab more or less ink on it to get the desired effect.

2. Place the stamp in the section you want to stamp and try not to move it around while applying pressure on it. On glazed surfaces this is tricky but if you’re gentle you will get it done without difficulty. Don’t stress if you have a bit missing on a little section or get it smudged – the overall look will be slightly distressed and simply adds to the charm of the piece.
3. After it has dried properly you can glaze it with a couple of layers podge, making sure it dries thoroughly between layers. Bake your bowl, plate or mug for 60 minutes on 90 degrees Celsius with the door of the oven slightly open. Different makes of glaze have different baking requirements so be sure to read the instruction carefully. We were truly thrilled by the final result – now you give it a go!

Oakdale maak gereed vir SA-kampioenskappeAgtien van Oakdale se leerders het aan die Jeugskoukompetisie te Agri Herold streekskou deelgeneem.
Die Oakdalers het weereens bevestig dat Oakdale meedingend is in jeugskou toe hulle in al drie die afdelings waarin hulle meegeding het, met die eerste 4 plekke weggestap het. Hierdie groep leerders is besig met voorbereiding vir die SA-Kampioenskappe wat gedurende September in Vryburg aangebied word.

Poon du Plessis, graad 8-leerder, het deelgeneem aan die Junior Africa Gholfchallenge naby Warmbad. Hy behaal die tweede plek in sy afdeling en kwalifiseer hiermee vir die US Kids-toernooi volgende jaar in Skotland en Amerika. Om die kroon op sy prestasie te span, behaal Poon ook ʼn arend (“eagle”) op die 15de gaatjie. Poon, ʼn trotse Oakdaler, het spesiaal sy Oakdale-kleurbaadjie vir die openingseremonie, asook die prysuitdeling ingepak en ook sy skool met trots op hierdie wyse verteenwoordig. Oakdale is voorwaar trots op hierdie Oakdaler en sy mooi prestasie.
Die Oakdale-leerders het baie goed gevaar in die Ratem Eisteddfod. Daar is onder meer ingeskryf vir kuns, sang, voordrag, toneel, musiek en koorsang. Die Oakdalers is met nie minder nie as 5 goud+, 5 goud en 2 silwersertifikate vereer. Die koor het ook baie goed gevaar en het goud+ behaal.
Die Junior Landbouvereniging streef daarna om alle leerders aan georganiseerde landbou in Suid-Afrika bloot te stel. Dit is uiters belangrik dat elke landbouprodusent in ons land aan ʼn landbouvereniging behoort om sodoende die ondersteuning van georganiseerde landbou te ervaar, asook om volhoubaar voedsel te kan produseer.
Oakdale se Junior Landbouverenig-ingbestuur vir 2015 is AJ van Wyk (voorsitter), LJ Blom (ondervoorsitter), Francois Denkema (sekretaris), Schalk Duminy (tesourier), Juandré Botha (addisionele lid) en André Wilken (addisionele lid).
Die matrieks saam met hulle metgeselle het die matriekafskeid van die Hoër Landbouskool Oakdale bygewoon. Die “magic” van die tema, Magic Circus, was oral te bespeur – van die pragtige metgeselle tot die heerlike ete wat voorgesit is. ʼn Towermooi aand om ʼn skoolloopbaan van 5 jaar vaarwel te roep.

Dasse oorrompel Swellendam Dasse blink uit by Eisteddfod
Dassies se harte is groot Hoërskool Langenhoven hou Matriekafskeid
Die Dasse het op 30 Augustus 2014 ‘n uitstekende Interskole-sportdag teen Hoërskool Swellendam beleef. Die Dasse het nie net op die dag oorrompel nie, maar ook die voorprogram se aktiwiteite wat bybelvasvra, skaak, gholf en redenaars ingesluit het. Al drie eerstespanne het die Swellies ore aangesit. Die eerste netbalspan het met 32-15 gewen, die hokkie met 2-0
en die eerste rugbyspan het met 25-0 geseëvier. Boonop, met die puntestelsel wat gebruik word om die wenner van die Interskole te bepaal, het die Dasse daar ook oorheers. Elke span wat wen dra by tot die puntetotaal en die Dasse se 84 punte het die Swellies se 25 met gemak getroef. Die Dasse het egter gesorg dat die trofee vir die derde jaar in ‘n ry veilig in die Das-trofeekas bly staan!
Die leerders van Hoërskool Langenhoven het hulself in die jaarlikse Ratem Eisteddfod met uitsonderlike prestasies duidelik laat geld. Die volgende Dasse was kategoriewenners en het deelnemers van al die ander skole uitgestof: Janke Schonken (Poetry 98%); Skye Luüs (Poetry 98%); Kdan Floris (Klavierprogram 92%);
Magdel van Zyl (Solosang 92%); Patsy Oosthuizen (Skryfstuk 96%); en Jesse Vermeulen (Kuns 94%).
Langenhoven het 18 goud +, 46 goud, 27 silwer en 4 brons verower. Dié Dasse het egter gewys dat hulle nie net in akademie en sport presteer nie, maar ook in kultuur uitblink.
Die Dasse het op Loslitdag hulle harte oopgemaak, deur ‘n muntelegging ten bate van Huis Wallace Anderson te hou. Hoërskool Langenhoven het altesaam R1242.00 bymekaargemaak.
Een geleentheid waaroor enige matriek vir baie lank droom, is verseker die matriekafskeid. Die Dasse-matrieks se droom het op 6 September 2014 waar geword. Die spoggeleentheid was in die Burgersentrum gehou met die tema “Sirkus”. Die saal het soos ‘n sprokie gelyk en die aand was vol glans, swier en prag.
Op die foto verskyn die pragtige Carmen van der Walt; sjampanjenooi van die Dasse.
Hier verskyn die eerste spanne se kapteine van links: Lefébre Rademan, Anja Uys, Lewies Janse van Rensburg en Mnr. Piet de Villiers (skoolhoof) met die Interskole-trofee na afloop van die Interskole. Agter staan Neelsie; die Dasse se gelukbringer.

Baie geluk aan Marike Weys, Trudie Rust, Elandré Kapp en Leandri Burger wat brons medaljes gewen het in die Sweedse aflos vir dogters O/17. Brintley Theys, Sameer Matthews, Sherno Pick en Austin Brown het brons medaljes gewen in die 4 x 100m aflos vir seuns O/15 en silwer medaljes in die Sweedse aflos vir seuns O/15. Ons volgende byeenkoms is die Rawson Top 10 Byeenkoms wat op 4 Oktober gehou word as deel van die Mosselbaai Sportfees.

Marco Coetzee en Reegan Dehning beide met 3 paaltjies het gehelp om Oudtshoorn te beperk tot 102 lopies. Uitstekende kolfwerk deur Alex Nel 55 nie uit nie het Punt die momentum gegee om in die 28ste beurt die wen lopies te slaan.

OHS reik uit na Up with Downs‘n Groep leerders van OHS se Waardes- Houdings- en Welsynportefeulje het besoek afgelê by Up with Downs. Die leerders het dit ontsettend baie geniet en was oorbluf deur die liefde en vriendelikheid van die leerders, asook die personeel. Leerders het opgedeel in groepe sodat hulle al die klassies kon besoek. Hulle het ingeskakel by die onderwysers se program en het o.a. gehelp kerskaartjies maak, legkaarte bou en liedjies gesing. Die leerders wou graag ‘n bedrag geld vir die skool gee en het besluit om tydens die skool se geesweek cup cakes te verkoop. Hulle was bevoorreg om R 1 950 te kon oorhandig. Leerders van OHS is met warm harte daar weg en kan nie wag om weer te gaan kuier nie.

In die Oktober vakansie vind die jaarlikse krieketfees plaas. Daar is 12 spanne wat die jaar aan die krieketfees deelneem. Die wedstryde begin die 4de Oktober en vind plaas op verskeie velde in George. Die krieketfees is baie gewild onder skole in die Wes, Suid en Oos-Kaap, daar is selfs skole uit Kimberly en Gauteng wat deelneem. Dit is die jaar die 13de keer wat die Krieketfees aangebied word. So geleentheid kan nie ongesiens verby gaan nie. Vind jou weg oop om die fees te kom ondersteun.

Daren Enrick was gekies vir die SA Presidentspan gedurende die SA Kickboxing kampioenskappe. Hy het aan die WAKO Junior Wêreld kampioenskappe in Italie deelgeneem gedurende September maand., waar hy sê hy baie ondervinding opgedoen het deur na van die beste kickboxers in die wêreld se gevegte te kyk. Hy sê hy is nou reg vir die volgende een.

The dancers from York High Dance Academy participated at the SADF Social Faculty’s Pro/Am championships the weekend of the 6th of September. Dancing with their teacher, Mr W van Jaarsveld all the participants delivered dances of high quality. Samantha Picton-Turbervill – Novice (Bronze) Intermediate Latin section 2nd place and Calista de Lange – Novice (Bronze) Intermediate Latin section 1st place. Calista de Lange also received a 1st place for her Single Ballroom dance – waltz and Samantha Picton-Turbervill a second place for her Single Ballroom Dance – Waltz. Our dancers sure has happy feet! Well done to the York Dance Acadamy.
2014 was a very successful hockey season for York High School. The 1st Boys and Girls hockey teams were crowned Champions of both the Southern Cape Men and Ladies Leagues. The 1st Girls beat a formidable Mossel Bay ladies team 4-1 in their final. The team played spirited hockey and showed determination way above their age. In a physical encounter, the York girls stood their ground and after 70min lifted the trophy for the 2nd time.The 1st Boys were the outright under dogs for the men’s final when they came up against a strong Knysna Men’s Hockey Team. The team from Knysna boasted 8 provincial senior players in their starting 11 and it would take a herculean effort from York to capture a victory.The boys played outstanding hockey and walked away 3-2 victors. It was a fast pass affair and the boys and girls were carried to their respective victories
by their loyal supporters. It was a busy year for the 1st Boys and Girls and both teams played close to 40 matches this season. A definite highlight for the girls was the invite to participate in
the Oranje Hockey Festival hosted by Oranje Meisie Skool from Bloemfontein where they played against some of the top schools in the country.On the boys side the highlight could be seen that the boys played against the following schools in the top 20. Westville (2nd), Paul Roos (4th), Bishops (8th), Michaelhouse (10th) and Grey PE (12th). This is a record to be proud of and we look forward to 2015.

Most of the world’s population has been transformed into genuinely terrifying zombie-things, and the pair must sneak, fight, and run their way past the many dangers that populate their journey. The slow-burn action gameplay is often uncomfortably tense, forcing you to think about and adapt to each enemy encounter.
BATTLEFIELD 4No doubt about it, Battlefield 4 on the PS4 is hands-
down one of the best ways to experience this absolutely thrilling multiplayer shooter. The visuals look roughly a billion times cleaner, which has a direct effect on the amount of enjoyment you’ll derive from playing it. Few things are as exhilarating as fighting in massive battles with a total of 64 players, watching soldiers duke it out in the streets while tanks hurl shells at anything that moves. The environmental destruction is more impressive than ever, the battles are tense, and even the single-player campaign has been greatly improved in comparison to the tragedy that was Battlefield 3’s solo offering. If you’re planning on playing Battlefield 4 on consoles, go PS4 or bust.

FLAGWe weren’t too sure what to think when we heard that the Assassin’s Creed franchise would be heading to the high seas in a pirate-filled adventure. What we definitely didn’t expect, though, was for our Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag review to call it the best AC yet. Seriously, it’s that good. The land combat is as strong as ever, and features some of the most interesting outdoor locations we’ve explored in the series--but it’s really the open ocean where AC4 is at its best.
FINAL FANTASY 14: A REALM REBORN
Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn captures a lot of what we love about the franchise: It’s got a great story, deep RPG combat and progression. And, despite it being an MMO, which are typically overly complex, it’s a game that plays quite well with a controller. Sure, it’ll take some getting used to, and yes, FF14: ARR is a bit overwhelming at first. But onceyou do, and once you get acclimated to the controls, you’ll be partying up with others to take down towering raid bosses (Titan, anyone?) in no time. Do be warned, however: because of the constantly-evolving nature of this MMO, you will have to pony up a monthly subscription fee to play it. Worth it? You bet.
