SulfurSulfur is found in its elemental

form around volcano vents (like the picture shown

below). Sulfur is a nonmetal, there are three physical

properties listed for nonmetals that sulfur has.

One of the physical properties is that it is a poor conductor of

heat and electricity. The melting point of Sulfur is 392.2 K, and the boiling point is 717.62 K. It has the density

of 2.07 g/cm3. There is about 350 parts per million by weight, and 225

parts per million by moles of sulfur in the Earth’s crust.

History…&…MoreSulfur has been known to

science since ancient times. It is known as Brimstone in the Bible. Sulfur is found in its elemental state around volcano vents. Scientists think the name may be derived from the Arabic word “Sufra” meaning yellow, or the Sanskrit “Shulbari” meaning enemy (ari) of copper (shulba).

Sulfur belongs in Group 16, the Chalcogens on the periodic table.

Sulfur doesn’t react with water under normal conditions. Sulfur reacts with all the Halogens if it’s being heated. Sulfur is soft pale yellow, odorless, brittle solid. Sulfur burns with a blue flame, oxidizing to sulfur dioxide. It is multivalent and combines with valence 2, 4, or 6, with almost all other elements.

Sulfur… Sulfur is a very useful element. It is used in sulfa drugs, car batteries, fertilizer, black gunpowder, matches, and fireworks. Without sulfur there would be a lot of people still sick, we wouldn’t be able to drive our fancy cars, our plants wouldn’t grow that well, if we didn’t have sulfur to use in our gunpowder we wouldn’t have won all the wars that we have and we’d probably would still be at war today, we couldn’t light a candle or a fire to keep warm or light a cigarette to kill our selves further more, and we wouldn’t be able to enjoy a spectacular light show up in the air on the 4th of July!
