Dear Friends,At our Baccalaureate Mass, I told our students that “the trajectory of your lives have been altered based upon your experience at Creighton Prep. You will operate on a higher plane. You will fly higher. You will run forward marked with the seal of Creighton Prep as ‘Men for Others’ who seek the Greater Glory of God (AMDG).”

This change in trajectory does not happen without the guiding hand of God and the many hands of our faculty and staff. Although fifty years separate the graduates and jubilarians we celebrate at this time of year, each of them has been impacted by men and women who live the Jesuit value of

“cura personalis,” or care for the whole person, a value that Ignatius of Loyola used as a principle of governance for the Jesuit order.

Fifty years ago, members of the Class of 1961 worked with Father Charles Kanne, S.J. to conduct monthly, early morning Apostleship of Prayer meetings. Others studied and prayed in the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary under the guidance of Rev. T.A. Halley, S.J. and Mr. J.E. Hoff, S.J., where they made a commitment to become more Christ-like through a special devotion to Mary. These senior sodalists spent time each week in service work such as teaching catechism or visiting the elderly and sick. They also delivered food baskets to Omaha’s poor.

This legacy of excellence and service is alive and well in the Class of 2011, too. With their faculty and staff guides, our most recent graduates attracted over $20 million in scholarships, including 36 full-tuition awards. Four of Nebraska’s 16 perfect scores on the recent ACT exam came from this class.

In addition to their academic success, they fed 1,433 families through Operation Others, contributed over 2,000 hours tutoring elementary school students, worked with the handicapped and visited the elderly during the Arrupe Experience class, and animated the spiritual life of the school community through their strong leadership in organizations such as the Campus Ministry Advisory Board.

I can’t thank you enough for your support of Creighton Prep and our deserving young men who so ably and willingly pass this tradition of excellence and service from one class to the next.

With your recent help, we were also able to complete the most successful BASH event in school history and begin the public phase of our Keeping the Promise campaign. This phase of KTP signals the final stage of a monumental effort to ensure that the Prep tradition of excellence and service operates on a higher plane for many years to come and it is a call to action for those who still want to invest in students committed to being “Men for Others” who seek the Greater Glory of God.

short stories and essays, while the Camera Club uses 4 x 5 Speed Graphic and Kallof lex cameras to help tell the stories of the school.

The newly formed Student Council is given responsibility for sock hops, Homecoming and pep rallies. The Council even assists in securing the turn signal at 72nd and Western Avenue so Prepsters can more easily reach school on time. The Poster Club is established to promote sock hops as well as football games, basketball games and speech meets. The C Club takes on cheerleading and usher responsibilities at numerous school activities. Members also decide that individual recognition such as stars, chevrons or numerals will no longer be given.

The Bellarmine Speakers and the Webster Club shine in speech and debate for Prep in the 1960s. The debate team scores multiple first place wins at the Missouri Valley Open and takes state in the 1968-1969 season. Symbolic of their achievements in the decade, Prep speakers amass over 50 trophies from competition in one school year and garner 68 in another.

A number of language clubs start in the mid-1960s including a French Club, a German Club and a Spanish Club. Science clubs abound as well, including a Computer Club that becomes a half-credit course incorporating the use of a $7000 machine on loan to Fr. Willard Dressel, S.J.

The Radio Club adds a tape recorder and a phone patch to its equipment stock while Safe Teens, a program developed in the 1950s with the Red Cross and the Omaha Police Department, continues to promote better driving habits and a positive image of teenagers.

After 16 years as separate organizations, the Mothers’ Club and Fathers’ Club merge to form the Parents’ Club. Their enthusiasm for Prep and all it stands for continues as do fundraising efforts such as the annual card party and social activities such as the Parent-Son Dance.

1970sThe service work of Sodality continues in many forms, including caroling at St. Vincent’s Home and weekly

tutoring sessions at St. Benedict’s Church. As he did in the 1960s, Fr. O’Leary emphasizes the importance of interfaith dialogue, including discussions with those from the Jewish, Presbyterian and Baha’i faiths. During this time, Fr. Bert Thelen, S.J. moderates the Christian Life Community to strengthen Prep’s community presence and to help students learn to accept and support those different from them.

Mr. Bill Laird arrives as a member of the Christian Life Community to coordinate retreats, which run from September to May as an annual requirement for all students. At the same time, juniors and seniors work to make Freshman Retreat a memorable experience for all.

Operation Others swings into full force as the number of families served goes from approximately 150 to over 500. The growing movement now includes unique fundraisers such as student walk-a-thons, swimming marathons, a 54-hour basketball marathon where over 13,000 points are scored and an Operation Others pep rally with senior-faculty wrestling matches. A Mass in the gym is held to bless the provisions before distribution.

Among others, the Masquers stage “Of Mice and Men” and “Oedipus.” Their one act play “Still Alarm” also wins second place in state competition.

Band membership grows to about 50 members who are directed for most of the 1970s by Mr. Randal Kriski. They take home first place in a competition held at Peru State’s homecoming and receive a superior rating at a district music festival at UNO. New uniforms are purchased and the band room is painted. Late in the decade, Mr. Doug Johnson succeeds Mr. Kriski as director. The Prepmen (choir) perform at the Top of the World restaurant in the Woodmen of the World Tower and at the Omaha Catholic High School Music Festival.

During the 1975-1976 school year, the Jay Journal becomes the state’s first high school newspaper to publish a color picture. The 1978 Jay Junior uses a centennial theme to cover Prep’s 100th year and, in 1979, a yearbook in magazine format is tried, highlighted by larger pictures and clever writing. The decade ends with the retirement of Fr. Dougherty, who played a huge role in the

CLUBS & ACTIVITIESClubs and activities have long been integral to Prep’s success in shaping men of faith, scholarship, leadership and service. From their experiences in clubs and activities, Prepsters move forward in society with an array of skills and sensitivities they can use to make a difference in creating a better world.

Included in the following pages are notable events from organizations such as the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Apostleship of Prayer that formed a strong foundation for the “men for others” involved today in the Campus Ministry Advisory Board, Operation Others, Green Circle and the Institute for Latin American Concern.

Noted also are the development of stalwarts such as the Jay Junior, the Jay Journal, Band, Drama and Speech & Debate along with the births of newer entities such as Student Council, the Creighton Prep Science Club, Academic Decathlon, Harvard Model Congress and Mock Trial that have joined in support of Prep’s mission.

From the Radio Club to Video Editing and from The Forum and The Unicorn to Ink, Inc., please enjoy a look back at Prep clubs and activities of the past fifty years.

1960sThe Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary guides many juniors and seniors who, like Ignatius himself centuries earlier, devote themselves to the Mother of God as a way to become more Christ-like. At the same time, underclass “candidates” study sodality rules, say a daily rosary and meditate in hopes of becoming official sodalists during their final two years at Prep.

In addition to study, prayer and meditation, Sodality members spend time each week in “apostolate work.” This manifests in service projects such as teaching catechism at Our Lady of Guadalupe parish, spending time with the elderly at St. Vincent’s Home or visiting those in pain at St. Joseph’s Hospital. During this time, sodalists also run Freshman Fun Night, paint a mission dormitory and some area homes and sponsor a canned food drive.

With Sodality at the spiritual core of the activities calendar is Prep’s chapter of the worldwide Apostleship of Prayer. Also known as the League of the Sacred Heart, the group encourages devotion to the Lord through prayer. In the 1960s The Apostleship of Prayer takes the place of freshman sodality in preparing first year students for their probationary time in sophomore sodality.

By mid-decade, Rev. William F. O’Leary, S.J. is selecting students to promote Apostleship of Prayer through five-minute presentations that discuss the Pope’s monthly intention, followed by the distribution of that intention in pamphlets. Members pray to Mary daily for these and other intentions.

The first full-length drama produced at the new school by Prep’s theatre group, known as the Masquers, is “Twelve Angry Men,” presented “in the round,” as is the Broadway musical “The Fantasticks,” which is staged in a circus tent. Television station WOW even airs a one-hour Prep production of “A Christmas Carol.”

While Band faces a period of decreased participation and interest, the Prep Choir moves decidedly forward under the guidance of Rev. H.C. Brahms, S.J. The group performs at the all-school music festival, carols at Crossroads and sings at the Omaha Job Corps Center.

The Creighton Prep celebrates its 45th year, becomes the Jay Journal and takes on a new format late in the 1960s partly due to improved production and photographic techniques. By mid-decade, Rev. P.J. Dougherty, S.J. is in his 20th year as faculty adviser to the Jay Junior and is now president of the Nebraska High School Press Association.

The Forum and The Unicorn literary publications appear, giving Prep writers an additional outlet for their poems,

development of the annual. The Unicorn becomes Prep’s sole literary magazine and the Multi Media Club lends support to budding independent filmmakers and writers.

The Student Council helps expand the open campus privilege for seniors and starts the Big Brothers program that introduces freshmen to the Prep experience. The Council also sponsors the Bachman Turner Overdrive concert and supports the appointment of a student representative to the President’s Advisory Board. The C Club sells popcorn and raffles a Torino to help cut a school deficit incurred with the construction of the Tin Gym.

The speech and debate teams continue to perform at a high level, with debate team members securing state titles on multiple occasions. Young Democrats also work city council and mayoral races to better understand politics and government.

The Math Club begins by taking first place at the Creighton University Math Field Day and finishing in the top ten percent in the National Council of Math Teachers Exam. A new Creighton Prep Science Club (CPSC) doubles its membership late in the decade and sponsors the first Creighton Prep Science Fair with Mr. Dave Dow moderating. The Chess Club garners second place finishes at state and members of the National Honor Society commit to tutoring fellow Prepsters weekly.

1980sSodality’s popularity and its focus on prayer, meaningful discussion and service work is gradually eclipsed by the similar mission of the Christian Life Community and its leader at Prep, Fr. Dick Tomasek, S.J. CLC members commit to daily prayer and self-examination, to attending Mass more frequently, to saying a special devotion to Mary and to attending bimonthly meetings. Fr. Tomasek also guides students through the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, helping to fulfill Ignatius’ original vision for the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary as an organization that could assist lay people in following Jesus in ways also practiced by Jesuits.

Freshman Retreat themes during the decade include “Family: The Giving Tree,” which reminds first year students to be active participants in families, and “My Name is a Gift from My Friends. My Family and My God – Upon This Name I Shall Build,” which centers on the concepts of creating and building identity.

Operation Others expands to serve 800 families at one point and marks its 20th year of existence. Duchesne and Marian students join Prepsters in raising money for the annual project. Mr. Laird also increases his involvement. Fundraisers include a Bozak and Morrissey concert and the “Giant Bionic Dribble” that sees the varsity team bounce a basketball 40 miles.

For the first time in the history of Drama at Prep, three one act plays are produced as “experimental theatre” and an entire set is designed and constructed by a Prep student. Many of decade’s projects are classics such as the Prep-Marian presentation of William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.” Productions of Joseph Heller’s “Catch-22,” Robert Bolt’s “A Man for All Seasons” and the Charles Dickens-inspired “Oliver!” also highlight the schedule.

Flourishing under the direction of Mr. Johnson, the Band begins to receive acclaim beyond Nebraska’s borders, including a “1” rating at the Worlds of Fun Music Festival and an excellent rating at the Winter in the Rockies music festival. A 32-piece Jazz Ensemble is also created from students in Jazz I and II classes.

Mr. John Naatz becomes moderator of the Jay Journal and, by decade’s end, the Prep school newspaper is being

produced on a computer. Three Apple Macintosh Plus machines and PageMaker desktop publishing software play key roles in an updated production process. The 1987 Jay Junior also breaks new format ground with a section of student and faculty candids under the unifying title “US.”

Mr. Steve Wertzberger becomes moderator of the Student Council, which continues to sponsor Big Brothers, helps start Field Day and assists in getting students placed on the curriculum and grading committees. The Council also supports “Teacher of the Year” elections and a BASH car raffle.

Under the direction of Miss Linda Mead and Mr. Alex Pritchard, the speech and debate teams send a bevy of students to national tournaments. Prep speakers take state in Reader’s Theatre for three consecutive years and, late in the 1980s, the debate team wins its fourth straight N.F.L. Nebraska Debate Tournament, matching the run of consecutive state titles by the Prep football team. The Spanish Honor Society at Prep also welcomes its first members on May 8, 1987.

The popular Science Club receives a charter from the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) and is soon voted the best JETS chapter out of 500 vying for the title. The CPSC receives a Presidential certificate from the Environmental Protection Agency for its recycling efforts and introduces a car pool matching service to encourage fuel conservation. The club also hosts a Science Olympics that attracts numerous area eighth graders to Prep. Field trips to places such as UNMC, Fontenelle Forest and the Kennedy Space Center in Florida round out a full slate of activity.

1990sMany sophomores, juniors and seniors join Christian Life Community groups and they meet weekly with a group leader—often a faculty member or an alumnus—to discuss their faith. The junior groups perform the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius then focus on prayer in their final year of spiritual development at the school.

G.R.I.E.F. provides a forum for students to discuss a wide range of topics in an environment of total trust and confidence with only its members aware of the acronym’s meaning. Junior and senior Brothers for Others work toward greater racial harmony at Prep and in the community beyond. Students Helping Others Worldwide educates and activates Prep students to social justice partly through the use of targeted letter-writing campaigns and Green Circle forms to give students an opportunity to teach area grade schoolers about diversity and acceptance.

Father Larry Gillick, S.J. encourages Freshman Retreat attendees to “play the cards they have to be heroes, not zeroes.” Sophomores get the choice of a closed retreat at Prep or a Quest retreat from the Archdiocese of Omaha and juniors have the option to join the three-day Junior Encounter weekend introduced by Fr. Tomasek. Retreat choices for seniors expand as well; they can apply to be retreat leaders or make a Teens Encounter Christ retreat or a closed retreat at Prep.

The core group of students that directs Operation Others grows to include those from schools such as Cathedral, Duchesne, Marian, Mercy and Skutt. Over 1,000 families are served at one point as Prep students increase their commitment to the project. The base of delivery operations also moves from Duchesne to St. Ann’s Parish.

“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is the first play staged in the new Henry L. Sullivan, S.J. Campus Center. Prep actors also combine with their Duchesne counterparts on two musicals, “Anything Goes” and “Rags,” and play roles in a fall Marian musical called “Good News.”

Band continues an unbroken streak of district music festival superior ratings while seeing many members named to various honor bands and winning more competitions out-of-state.

Ink, Inc. gives voice to aspiring Prep artists, writers and photographers as the school’s literary journal, using color generously. Production costs continue to drop for the Jay Journal with the increasing use of technology. The

publication also turns from an eight-page format printed quarterly to four pages produced monthly and uses recycled paper for the first time.

Other activities “firsts” in the 1990s at Prep include the first state title for the Academic Decathlon team, first places for all five Latin Club teams at the Nebraska Latin Competition, victory at UNO Math Day for the Math Club, state trophies for the Chess Club and annual participation at the Harvard Model Congress in Boston where Prepsters play roles in a simulated federal government.

Prep-Marian Mock Trial teams also appear, preparing and arguing cases chosen by the American Bar Association and pending before the Supreme Court. A Prep speaker even wins a national forensics championship for the first time since one was claimed by Fr. George Sullivan, S.J. ’62, the former Prep president and current assistant to Fr. Tom Merkel, S.J. Young Republicans also begins at the school, quickly becoming one of the largest groups of its kind in Nebraska.

In addition to its regular duties, the Student Council dedicates itself further to service work through the sponsorship of Social Justice Week and collaborating with the new Campus Ministry Advisory Board and Operation Others on a coat drive where 500 garments are collected.

The Architecture Club wins an “Applied Sciences” award in a “Mars Interplanetary Expedition” design contest and the Science Club achieves a remarkable milestone, passing the one million pound mark in material recycled since 1977. The club later wins the Metro Envirothon competition and a national JETS team title.

2000sThe Campus Ministry Advisory Board celebrates its 10th anniversary and attracts hundreds of student applicants to leadership positions in its five divisions of work: planning retreats, collecting for missions, setting up and performing at school liturgies, promoting and documenting CMAB events and planning those events.

Groups such as G.R.I.E.F, Brothers for Others, Green Circle and Active Prep Leaders Against Using Drugs provide numerous opportunities for Prep students to put their spirituality and concern for others into action at Prep and in the local area.

To effect change in the larger world, groups of juniors, seniors and faculty leaders continue annual summer service trips to the Dominican Republic through the Institute of Latin American Concern and others help

Computers for Africa ship over 2200 machines to 183 East African communities.

Freshman Retreat themes such as “Take the time, Make a change, Be the difference” and “To Shine Is Better Than To Reflect” reinforce the importance of an others-centered life with first year students.

The new house system also helps bond Prep students, faculty and staff in the service of others through point-gathering activities such as mission collections and food drives. Near the end of the decade, Kanne House wins two consecutive O’Leary Cups, symbolic of their points victories over the houses of Auer, Hindelang, Laughlin and Niemann.

During the new millennium, the leadership responsibilities for Operation Others pass from Mr. Laird to Mr. Jerry Kinney and the core group of Prep, Duchesne, Marian, Mercy and Skutt students welcomes assistance from Roncalli, Gross, Mount Michael and St. Peter Claver. In the 2009 holiday season alone, 1,600 families representing 7,000 people are O.O. beneficiaries.

Shakespeare productions with contemporary twists highlight a thought-provoking schedule from the Prep Players in the 2000s, including “Much Ado About Nothing” done in 1950s style and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” staged with a nod to the 1960s. Michael Stewart’s “Those That Play The Clowns,” about a group of minor characters from “Hamlet,” is also performed.

Band achieves its 24th consecutive district music festival superior rating and continues to fill All-State honor bands with Prep students. It also marks the decade by sweeping the awards at a Worlds of Fun Music Festival and garnering superior ratings in Orlando and Chicago competitions. A Liturgical Band forms and is guided by Mr. Rob Chesire. In addition to its own performances, the band also begins lending support to a renewed Choir.

Ink, Inc. continues to produce two issues of written and visual expression each school year and the Jay Journal marches on with technology. The paper’s final drafts are now submitted electronically in Adobe PDF file format and staff articles covering technology-related issues that concern MySpace, Facebook and e-mail “hacking” are published. The 2007 Jay Junior is the first to be produced almost entirely in color and the appearance of a Video Editing club further signals the advent of technology in Prep activities.

Four state championships and a divisional second place in the national championships held in Omaha highlight the accomplishments of the Academic Decathlon team. A Prep team scores first place at Harvard Model Congress in Boston and Prep speakers also take home a number of competition awards. A Young Independents group provides an alternative to those already interested in and working in the political process as Young Democrats and Young Republicans.

The Student Council helps put “Christmas in the Cage” and “Bluau” thematic touches on home basketball games and they produce, among other events, a NASCAR-themed homecoming and “Little Prom on the Prairie.”

The Science Club also continues its multi-decade run of excellence in the 2000s as it takes home state Science Bowl titles and consecutive state championships in the JETS Test of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science (TEAMS) competition.

2010sIn the most recent school year that began a new decade for clubs and activities, Prep teams continued to mark impressive accomplishments through their dedication and hard work and that of their faculty moderators.

The Creighton Prep TEAMS squad captured its seventh state title in eight years and tied for 23rd place nationally out of 907 teams. Led once again by Mr. Dave Dow, Prep

students achieved a score that was only five points shy of the nation’s top mark of 152.

Academic decathletes are tested in ten subjects—language and literature, music, social studies, art, math, economics, essay, speech, interview and Super Quiz—and members of Creighton Prep’s Academic Decathlon team once again shined brightly at May nationals under the guidance of Ms. Jeannie Brayman. As a team, the Prep scholars placed eighth among the 37 high school teams participating and second in their medium-sized school division.

With Mr. Doug Johnson directing as he has for many years now, the Creighton Prep Band scored a Gold Award (a national rating) and received a first place ranking in concert band category 2A at the Chicago Heritage Music Festival in April. The group was also given an Adjudicator Award, which requires a score of 92 (Prep averaged 95.67), received an invitation to Festival of Gold and took home the Outstanding Band trophy for having the highest score among all competing bands.

Chris Oliver 2004Wrestling

Chris Oliver is the most accomplished wrestler in Creighton Prep history, going undefeated as a four-time state champion and becoming just the third wrestler in Nebraska high school history up to that time to achieve that goal.

From 2000 to 2004, he went 130-0 and pinned his opponents in 109 of those matches while winning state titles in four different weight classes: 103 lbs., 119 lbs., 140 lbs. and 152 lbs. His final state championship match lasted just 87 seconds.

During his decorated high school career, Chris also won four consecutive championships at the North High Invitational, the Creighton Prep Wrestling Tournament and the Metro and District meets. He also received The Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and the David Hoover Memorial Scholarship at Prep for Christian service.

Ben Fogarty 1994Football, Basketball, Baseball

Ben Fogarty was a three-sport starter in football, basketball and baseball and picked up eight varsity letters during his time at Prep. Along the way, he established himself as one of the best student athletes in Prep history.

On the gridiron, Ben excelled at wide receiver and was selected in his senior season to the Omaha World-Herald All-Metro and All-Nebraska football teams as well as to the Lincoln Journal Star’s Super State Team. He was also a starting guard on the 1994 state championship basketball team that included seven future Division I athletes.

Ben was an integral part of Prep’s success on the baseball diamond, too. He played on teams that finished state

runner-up in 1992 and state champions in 1993, and he followed that state championship season by hitting .437 in American Legion ball. As a senior, Ben was named to the outfield on the World-Herald All-State baseball team, after which he batted .454 in American Legion play.

For his superior accomplishments at Prep, Ben was also named the B’nai B’rith High School male Athlete of the Year in 1994 and The Greater Omaha Convention and Visitors Bureau Sports Committee Scholar/Athlete of the Year for 1993-1994.

Jim O’Brien 1965Football, Basketball

Jim O’Brien started his athletic legacy at Prep in the fall of 1961 by running through freshman football opponents for 14 touchdowns. It was a sign of great things to come.

In the fall of 1963, number 20 became known as a threat who could score from anywhere on the field. He finished the season as the Inter-City and Class A scoring champion and was named All-Inter-City and All-State for his accomplishments as Prep won the state title.

During another state championship campaign in 1964, Jim thrilled crowds with his running ability, highlighted by his three-touchdown game against Central and his four TDs against Lincoln Pius X. After the season, he was named All-Metro League and honorary captain of the All-State team as the top vote-getter.

Jim also starred on the basketball court. He was a member of the 1963 varsity squad that finished second in the state and the 1964 team that was inducted into the 2010 Athletic Hall of Fame for its record-setting performances that brought the school its first basketball state title since 1945. Jim also competed in track and baseball, was a member of the Student Council and vice-president of the C Club.

Dick Harvey 1956 (deceased)

Basketball

A powerful force on the high school hardwood in the mid 1950s, Dick Harvey began his history-making journey in Prep basketball with little fanfare but finished a star.

He was on the Freshman Inter-City League team in 1953 then moved to varsity his sophomore year, when the team was in rebuilding mode with just three seniors, finishing with a 4-12 record. The Prep men battled bravely in those losses, which gave hope to fans for the following season, and, just as important, they saw number 31, Dick Harvey, begin to emerge at the center position.

In 1955 and 1956, the man the ’55 Jay Junior described as a “ lanky, hook-shot specialist” matured into a true double threat for Prep, scoring and rebounding his way to consistent and outstanding performances. He scored 651 points—328 in his junior campaign and 323 his senior year, which led the Inter-City—as he averaged nearly 19 points per game over his final two seasons at Prep.

As a junior, he helped unheralded Prep to the district title over a favored Benson squad then scored 16 points in a win against Lincoln Central, the top team in Nebraska at the time. Though Prep’s state title hopes were dashed in the final moments of a second-round match against Scottsbluff, Dick was named to the Class AA and All-Tournament teams at State. He was a two-year selection to the Inter-City All-Star team and captain of the Junior Jays in his senior campaign at Prep,

John (Jack) Cannon 1949Football, Basketball

On the gridiron, Jack Cannon helped his reserve team to the Inter-City Championship in 1946 then quarterbacked the varsity to an undefeated, untied season in 1947 as they captured the City, Inter-City and Interstate championships. Jack was named to the All-

City team following the season and, according to the yearbook, “surprised most followers with his ‘savvy’ and passing ability."

On the hard court, he helped the 1946 reserve team go undefeated (14-0) on their way to becoming Inter-City Reserve champions. The following year—just after that brilliant football season at quarterback—Jack’s superior play at forward helped Prep to a 17-1 season and the Inter-City and Interstate titles. As a senior, his play at guard won him All-City and All-State accolades as Prep once again dominated area teams, finishing with an 18-1 record.

Jack also was an exceptional student, a member of “A” class and finished his four years at Prep with a GPA above 90 percent. For his high school accomplishments on and off the athletic field, he was awarded the 1949 World-Herald Scholarship during commencement exercises.

Dr. Samuel C. Buda 1940Football, Basketball, Baseball

Dr. Samuel C. Buda is another of Creighton Prep’s most accomplished multi-sport stars. During his time at Prep, Sam collected a total of six letters in football, basketball and baseball as well as a national championship with the 1939 McDevitts team on which he played catcher.

Virtually every Prep team Sam was on seemed to strike pay dirt, like the 1938 baseball team that was co-champion of Omaha and the 1939 basketball team that won Inter-City, District and Interstate titles.

In the 1939-1940 school year alone, Sam played on three state title teams. First, in the fall of 1939, Sam’s solid line play on the gridiron helped Prep finish the season undefeated, untied and unscored upon in Nebraska. Then, in winter 1940, Sam and the rest of the Prep hoopsters went 14-3 in the regular season on their way to City, Inter-City, Interstate and state titles. A few months later, with Sam at his post behind home plate, Prep smashed its way to a 9-1 regular season record and a state title, allowing just 12 runs in a total of 14 contests.

Paul BanguraSoccer

Paul Bangura accepted a position teaching biology at Prep in 1966 and the achievements that followed during his 36-year tenure as soccer coach are nothing short of remarkable. He set a boys soccer national record with 642 wins, won 14 Zenon Cups and three state titles, mentored numerous players and coaches and became known as the “father of soccer” in Nebraska.

In 1968, he helped form a four-team league in the Omaha area that grew to include 96 schools and, in 1988, he was a key figure in getting soccer sanctioned as a high school varsity sport in Nebraska.

In addition to his teaching and coaching accomplishments at Prep, Paul completed a masters program in biological sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and studied radiation biophysics at Creighton.

1962 Football Team"The Comeback Champs"

The 1962 Football Team made Prep history with incredible determination and courage that remain shining examples to Prepsters in every sport challenged by adversity.

After losing their first game 19-0 to South—the first time that a Don Leahy coached team had not scored in an opening game—and their second, 33-0, to Lincoln High, they roared back to win their last seven and a share of the Inter-City championship.

In those final seven games, Prep’s defense clamped down on its opponents, giving up a total of just 36 points while

shutting out Central, Abraham Lincoln and North in consecutive weeks as a prelude to must-have, late season wins against Ryan and Tech.

The team was noted for the reliable quarterbacking and kicking of Dave Bouda, who led Prep to victory against North on a sprained ankle, the tough running of All-Inter-City and All-State Honorable Mention back Tom DiBiase and the solid defensive play of Sandy Buda, who was named to the All-Inter-City and All-State teams.

The 1963 Jay Junior even recorded that “a crowd of about 250 gathered to pay tribute” to the squad at season’s end and that “various speakers praised the team as a model of Prep spirit.” At the event, Frs. Decker and Sullivan remarked that this group of young men was “one of the finest ever to represent Prep on the gridiron” and they remain so to this day.

Two Creighton Prep alumni and one Creighton Prep special event will be honored along with 19 other inductees during the 18th annual Nebraska High School Hall of Fame ceremony. The Prep honorees include: Mike Dugan ’55 (athlete), Tom Jaworksi ’61 (coach) and the Central vs. Prep games at Rosenblatt in 1960 and 2010 (a great moment in Nebraska high school sports).

The ceremony will take place on Sunday, September 25 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts in Lincoln. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased by contacting Tami at the Nebraska Sports Council at 402.471.2544.

“Magic” Mike Dugan ’55INDUCTED AS AN ATHLETE

Mike Dugan was a two-time All Nebraska quarterback with a record of 20-0 as a starter for the Junior Jays. He made the all Catholic All American team his senior year and went on to play football at Notre Dame. He was

also Prep’s ace pitcher and leading scorer on the hardwood his junior and senior years.

Tom Jaworski ‘61INDUCTED AS A COACH

Tom Jaworski retired in 2010 after 39 years and a 343-92 record as head football coach at Creighton Prep. He has the most football coaching wins in state history and his teams won nine state titles and finished second five times.

Nostalgia was in the air on April 30 as former CP soccer players from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 00’s participated in the second annual Alumni Soccer Game.

The Zenon Cup, the traveling predecessor to today’s sanctioned state championship trophy, was once thought to be lost but was found and on display!

After the match, many proud alumni cheered the current Jr. Jays onto victory over then- undefeated Dowling High School of Des Moines.

As you may know, leaders across the country have identified that proficiency in math is critical to our nation’s economic growth, resilience and development. According to results released by the U.S. Department of Education, American teenagers perform below average in mathematics compared to their peers in other industrialized countries.

The Class of 1971, in true “men for others” fashion, has the opportunity to take Prep’s math instruction and curriculum to a world class level and, by doing so, honor Dick Flagg, long time math instructor, and celebrate their 40th class reunion.

A member of the 1971 class, Jim Kennedy, has pledged $250,000 towards this effort! He has challenged his class to match the gift for $250,000 and asked Prep to identify a foundation match of $250,000 for a total of $750,000 to be spent on math instruction over the next five years. Prep has successfully identified a foundation to match the $250,000 and the class is actively reaching for everyone to join in.

“There is a significant need in this country for much better math skills, not only for those pondering careers in the sciences, technology or medicine, but also for those approaching business, engineering and many other careers. Our goal is to help Prep provide 'world class' math instruction – not only for the gifted, but for all. Many of us were inspired by Dick Flagg’s instruction years ago. This is our chance to honor Mr. Flagg and to make a real difference,” said Jim Kennedy in announcing the challenge.

Wondering how Creighton Prep students fare after their graduations from Prep? Fr. Bob Tillman, S.J., Director of College Placement at Creighton Prep, recently completed a survey of the Class of 1998 ten years after their graduation. He was able to gather data from 224 of the 239 graduates (92.9%). This was the first such survey conducted at Prep since a similar one he conducted 25 years ago of the Class of 1973.

Father Tillman found that 79% of the Class of ’98 graduated from college and six more are still seeking their college degrees. This compares to 69.1% of the Prep Class of 1973. Fr. Tillman reports that this exceeds the national average which indicates that 60% of high school graduates finish college in seven years. The graduation success rate at Creighton University for students who began at Creighton in 1998 was 70.5%. At UNL, 61.6% of those who began in 1998 graduated within six years. At UNO the rate was 37.4%. The overall rate for the state of Nebraska was 54.3% for college students who began in 1998. Considering that women have a higher success rate than men, Fr. Tillman is very impressed with Prep’s numbers.

Fr. Tillman also found that 49.7% of Prep Class of ’98 college grads went on to graduate studies, with

40.7% earning a graduate or professional degree. Three have earned their Ph.D. and seven are studying for their doctorate. Eight are medical doctors, five are dentists and 14 earned law degrees. In the Prep Class of ’73, 36% earned a graduate or professional degree.

One noticeable change with the more recent grads was the marriage rate. The Class of ’73 had 53.3% of the graduates married ten years after graduation while the Class of ’98 had a married rate of only 46.4%. The earlier class also had .82 children per married grad while the more recent grads had .68 children per married grad.

In terms of occupations, the most noticeable change was the number of graduates who earned degrees in computer-related fields and are currently in occupations

that are computer-specific such as system analysts, computer engineers or software developers. 17% (30) of the more recent college grads majored in computer science, computer engineering or management information systems.

Another big change was the number of recent grads who are in secondary or elementary education. Eight members of the Class of ’98 are in secondary or elementary education while only two members of the Class of ’73 listed “teacher” as their occupation.

While the Class of ’73 had two members who were working for newspapers, the Class of ’98 has three members involved in television production and another two involved in filmmaking and video production.

The Class of ’73 had 5% (9) of their number earn associate degrees while the Class of ’98 had only 2.3% (5) earn an associate degree.

Some other findings of note from the Prep graduates of 1998: Three are musicians, two are active duty military, two are in law enforcement, two are professional athletes, two are personal trainers, one is an actor, one is a book illustrator, one is a fishing guide and one is a professional comedian.

BASH continues to play a very important role in delivering educational excellence to over 1,050 young men. The monies raised during BASH are a key component in Prep's ability to keep tuition affordable for everyone, as well as to provide more than $1.8 million in financial assistance annually to approximately 45 percent of our students.

BASH 2011 included a $10,000 raffle drawing and a live auction of 41 items. Some of the highest bid items included a catamaran sailboat in the British Virgin Islands for a week, a gourmet dinner with Creighton Prep President Fr. Tom Merkel, S.J., Nebraska vs. Michigan game tickets with private air transportation and a Prep themed video arcade machine designed by Prep student Connor McCoy that sold for $8,000!

In its eighth year, Prep’s online auction, eBASH, featured 323 items and brought in over $80,000. Items included skybox tickets to all Nebraska home football games, a Las Vegas weekend getaway, a golf getaway to Stonewall Golf Club in Philadelphia, PGA Championship tickets, many custom-made Prep items, baseball tickets, autographed memorabilia and much more.
