FAQs

Q. My alarm is beeping. What should I do? A.  99  times  out  of  100  the  beeping  is  coming  from  a  battery  powered  smoke  detector.  The  beeping  indicates  that  the  battery  is  nearing  its  end  of  life.  The  only  secure  way  to  stop  the  beeping  is  to  replace  the  9-‐volt  battery.

Q. Is there a way to test the battery without removing it? A. No.  There  is  no  practical  way  to  test  the  9-‐volt  battery  in  or  out  of  the  smoke  detector.  It  must  be  replaced  to  stop  the  beeping  and  continue  its  important  detection  function.

Q. How do I know which smoke detectors contain batteries? A. The  detectors  that  do  NOT  have  batteries,  have  small  cylindrical  cage-‐like-‐structures  on  the  bottom,  flash  a  green  light  every  5  seconds,  do  not  beep,  and  should  not  be  removed.  All  other  smoke  detectors  have  9-‐volt  batteries.

ARCHITECTURE  COMMITTEE                              John  Vautier  and  Jim  Myers                              When  you  think  about  updating  or  making  improvements  to  your  home,.    Please  remember  to  contact  John  Vautier  or  Jim  Myers  before  doing  anything  to  the  outside  of  your  unit.  They  will  make  sure  you  have  the  proper  architectural  form  to  submit.

DISTRIBUTION  COMMITTEE                  Nancy  Wall  and  Nancy  Cook                                    No  new  deliveries  are  planned  but  we’re  ready  and  willing  to  perform  them  whenever  the  need  arises.

FINANCE  COMMITTEE                                                  Joe  Jorda,  Joe  Silio,  Carol  Vandergast                                                                                    The  recently  formed  committee,  which  reports  to  Council,  is  to  oversee  financial  activities  of  our  Village  and  advise  and  assist  Council  on  financial  management,  planning  and  control  for  smooth  operation  of  Village  affairs.  This  includes  working  with  our

Property  Manager  to  develop  the  Operating  and  Reserve  Funds,  annual  budgets  and  review  Village  monthly  revenues  and  expenses,  making  recommendations  to  Council.    The  committee  will  also  suggest  reliable  investment  and  banking  and  options.

LANDSCAPE  COMMITTEE                            Nancy  Reynolds                                                                            Now  that  the  rhododendrons  and  azaleas  have  been  pruned,  the  next  project  will  be  the  pruning  of  all  the  other  shrubs.  This  will  take  place  in  the  near  future.  We  have  received  many  compliments  from  outsiders  about  how  lovely  our  village  looks.  This  is  due  to  our  very  competent  landscaper  and  volunteers  who  look    out  for  problems.  Again,  thank  you    for  your  patience  and  cooperation.

MAINTENANCECOMMITTEE                                                    Tom  Kelley                                                                                            This  past  spring,  the  maintenance  committee  conducted  a  survey  of  the  garage-‐mounted  street  lights.  It  found  that  about  80  of  the  lanterns  mounted  in  unprotected  locations  were  deteriorating  from  rust  in  varying  degrees.  Fortunately,  the  problem  was  detected  before  expensive  replacement  of  these  fixtures  was  necessary.  To  date,  the  committee  has  refurbished  25  of  the  most  seriously  affected  lights.  This  refinishing  process,  though  slow,  will  continue  until  all  80  lanterns  have  been  brought  back  to  better  than  original  condition.  Cost  to  our  village  is  for  materials  only.

One  of  our  volunteers  is  making  the  rounds  of  the  mailboxes,  touching  up  paint  scratches  that  have  occurred  since  last  year’s  extensive  painting  project  With  the  expansion  of  our  volunteer  membership,  we  are  able  to  return  to  the  earlier  process  for  addressing  roof  leaks.  If  you  have  a  roof  leak,  call  the  maintenance  chairman  and  a  roof-‐knowledgeable

member  will  schedule  a  meeting  with  you  to  assess  the  leak  and  advise  you  regarding  the  repair  process.

SOCIAL/WELCOME  COMMITTEE Ann  Shank  and  Lila  Greenwald The  Summer  Pool  Party  theme  was  a  beach  celebration  with  pails  of  sand,  shells  and  tiny  umbrellas.  Mounds  of  tasty  food,  supplied  by  the  guests,  more  than  satisfied  fifty  people.  Thumbs  up  to  Vinnie,  the  engaging  and  talented  musician  who  performed  a  superb  choice  of  songs.

LAMPLIGHTER  COMMITTEE Betty  Parry,  Mary  Ellen  Vautier,    Doug  Rhoads  and  Jim  Myers Please  call  Mary  Ellen  Vautier  or  Betty  Parry  if  you  know  of  an  outside  Village  light  that  needs  replacing.  Then  Doug  Rhoads  or  Jim  Myers  will  drag  out  a  ladder  to  replace  the  bulbs.  On  behalf  of  the  Village  we  would  like  to  thank  Tom  Kelley  for  restoring  garage  light  fixtures  that  needed  attention.

POOL  COMMITTEE     Richard  Dixon  and  Bill  Dettwyler Dick  and  Bill  want  to  thank  the  women  who  take  such  good  care  of  the  flowers.  Each  week,  one  of  eight  volunteers  waters  and  maintains  the  eye-‐catching  container  gardens  on  the  pool  deck.  Also,  many  thanks  to  all  the  folks  who  helped  clean  the  debris  from  the  pool  and  pool  deck  following  the  storms  on  July  7th  and  8th.

UNIT  WATER  USUAGE  COMMITTEE Everett  Marsh  and  John  Greenwald                  Water  cost:  2005  $31m  vs  2010  $40m.        (Nearly  same  usage)                            Mid-‐May  Comparison

Profile on Irene Jones

The Del Rios—Phil, Irene and Jay --pose for a publicity shot in the early 1940s’. Irene and Jay Jones (right) married after a WWII separation.

The saying goes, “timing is everything in dance”. Irene Jones abandoned her life in show business after six years. Irene appeared relaxed and amused as she remembered vividly those “days on the road”. Performing in a trio with two male partners, called the Del Rios, her specialty was a combination of dance and acrobatics. They were the originators of “New Trend in Motion”. Their trademark moves thrilled audiences from coast to coast in all the best theaters and clubs, receiving glowing reviews. It’s easy to imagine Irene in her striking gown, covered in beads that quivered with every movement and accompanied by her two partners in black tie. During WWII, the Del Rios traveled by bus or Pullman, performing in top-reviewed USO camp shows. They were on stage

with famous headliners such as Ray Bolger, Ozzie Nelson, Keenan Wynn and “handsome” Peter Lawford. The trio’s dance wizardry was described in a 1943 newspaper review: “The Del Rios, two men and a very attractive girl combine dance spins and lifts of rare synchronization and smoothness with feats of balancing topped by a three-high stand. Done to music, the girl stands on one partner’s shoulders and does a back-bend to provide the foundation for partner #2’s handstand after he makes a somewhat perilous ascent”. Irene was raised in Connecticut by a mother who encouraged her to enroll in dance at six-years old, taking tap and acrobatics. Further study in New York City helped launch her professional career at eighteen. At that time, she joined the Del Rios as “the girl” in the trio, making her debut at the Strand Theater featuring Eddie Duchin. Then onto the Astor Roof highlighting Tommy Dorsey, the Pied Pipers and Frank Sinatra. The RKO Boston Review stated: “the trio offered an exciting and original balancing act, performing impossible feats with Irene nonchalantly smoking a cigarette”. The Del Rios parted ways in San Francisco since the two men were drafted and Irene returned to N.Y.C. for a short stint with the Rockettes. But, even though the trio had disbanded, and Irene’s beaded gowns were packed away, there were happy days ahead in 1947 when Irene married Jay Jones, one of her two partners. Yes, “timing is indeed, everything” Lila Greenwald

A Few Words from our President Dan Gross As the temperature increases, so do the critiques and problems of Eaton Village as expressed to the council. We are aware of the comments, but our priority number one was to investigate and answer the questions presented at the general open community meeting. This has been addressed in a recent letter to all residents. The council has been lenient with enforcing rules and regulations concerning parking and speeding problems. This will be directly addressed in a President’s letter on or about July 25 which will discuss strict enforcement for chronic abusers. This will include registering all autos by security with possible fines of abusers as well as installing “sleeping policemen”. I sincerely hope we do not have to resort to these measures
