Anyone that has ever gone to an ALPFA national convention can tell you, it’s

truly a magical time! The convention personifies the power of community, family

gathering together to connect, to develop, and to grow and provides opportunities to

grow professionally and personally. You will connect with peers and meet industry

leaders that are there to help you succeed. The convention binds us as members of

a proud heritage with a bright future. A future that ALPFA is helping expand by giving members a wide range of

opportunities to lead. And what could be more magical than being in the Magic Kingdom? This convention will

be a transformative moment for those that attend and for the ALPFA nation.

Why, you ask? Well you see, when we gathered as a family in our nation’s capital for our 2013 Convention, I

asked you to imagine with me the future of ALPFA. I asked you to look through your mind’s eye and see what

the future might bring and where ALPFA would take us. Little could I have imagined, how prophetic that

conversation would be. Since that moment, ALPFA has needed to meet the challenge of selecting its second ever

CEO. In order to do this we brought onboard an executive search firm to assist us with finding the very best

candidates for the CEO position. We had a commitment to our members and our stakeholders to continue its

phenomenal growth. And as I have said many times before, in order to be a going concern we must adapt, grow

and improve. I firmly believe we have yet to tap our fullest potential. Together with you, our members, our

corporate partners, our dedicated volunteers and our incredible staff, we will move this organization to the next

level of excellence and set the standard for others to follow. This thought is what guided us through our

extensive CEO search and succession planning. I am happy to inform you that ALPFA, on Tuesday June 3rd

announced that the search is over and we have selected a new CEO to take the reins and lead ALPFA to its next

level of growth and prosperity. The board and I are happy to welcome on board Charlie P. Garcia. Just to tell

you a little about him, Charlie has made a mark in business, government, the military, and education – and as a

role model to the Hispanic/Latino community. He is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy and earned a

master’s degree in public administration from the University of Oklahoma as well as a law degree from Columbia

Law School. Charlie founded a global business from his broom closet and led it to be ranked eighth in the country

on Inc. Magazine’s list of 500 fastest-growing privately held companies. Hispanic Business also identified him as

one of the 100 most influential Hispanics in the United States, and Univision Television selected him for their

series Orgullo Hispano (Hispanic Pride). One of the great things I found in talking to Charlie is that from his

stories about his childhood, growing up in Latin America, to his years in Washington D.C., Charlie always came

across as deeply authentic with an earnest commitment to public service, and with a contagious zest for life. You

can read more about Charlie on our web page www.alpfa.org. However, even better, join us at this year’s

national convention and meet him in person!

In the coming years, with Charlie’s leadership, ALPFA has an even brighter future in store for you. We will work

even hard to provide new and challenging opportunities for you to develop your leadership skills, connect with

colleagues, mentors and corporate partners. We will work diligently to continuously add value for our members,

corporate partners, student members, volunteers and our society. ALPFA needs engaged members ready and

willing to lead. Come to the convention to share your thoughts and ideas with us, as well as to give a warm

ALPFA welcome to Charlie.

This is our organization and it is up to all of us to make it succeed, by being connectors and ambassadors of

ALPFA in our families, in our schools and in our companies. This is core to the growth of the ALPFA family, so

bring your friends and family with you and experience the magical kingdom of ALPFA!

It’s an exciting time for ALPFA and to be an ALPFA member, help us to grow for the next 40 years!

The New ALPFA:

A Transformative Milestone

NEW YORK (May 27, 2014) – The Board of Directors of ALPFA (pronounced

Alpha), one of the nation’s largest and most established Latino professional

organizations, selected Charlie P. Garcia as its new chief executive officer to

succeed longtime CEO Manny Espinoza.

“After an extensive search, we are thrilled to welcome Charlie, who is passionate about our mission of

developing Latino business leaders and driving value to our constituency. Our organization will truly benefit

from his experience as a Fortune 500 board member, leadership at the highest levels of government and

success as an entrepreneur focused on Hispanic consumers,” said ALPFA’s National Chairwoman Yvonne

Garcia.

ALPFA is a 42 year-old organization that began as an association of finance and accounting professionals which

today supports Latinos in all industries through its 41 chapters across the country and more than 100 student

chapters at major colleges and universities.

Mr. Garcia succeeds Manny Espinoza, whose 12 years of outstanding leadership propelled ALPFA to its highest

membership numbers. ALPFA’s mission is to create life-long professional opportunities for its 23,000

members and business partners through leadership development, networking, mentorship and community

engagement.

“Manny leaves a true legacy of outstanding service to the Latino community. I look forward to continuing the

great work he did and enhancing the value we provide to Latino professionals in all sectors of the American

economy.” Mr. Garcia said.

Most recently Mr. Garcia served as CEO of Garcia Trujillo Holdings LLC, a merchant banking, private equity,

and consulting firm where he was recognized as one of the leading advisors to companies that do business in

the global Hispanic market. Prior to that role, he was the CEO of the fastest growing Hispanic-owned business

in the U.S. with 60 offices in seven countries and $2 billion in assets. He is also a Columbia Law School

graduate, a former White House Fellow and a bestselling author of two leadership books.

“America's baby boom generation is retiring at the rate of 10,000 a day for the next 18 years, while during

that same time period over 1 million Latino youths will turn 18 each year,” said Mr. Garcia. “Indeed, more

than one-in-four children in the U.S. under age 18 today is Latino and the strength of Americas' future

economy is linked to the promise of these younger professionals that ALPFA seeks to develop into leaders

of character for the nation.”

Mr. Garcia has held a number of leadership roles in both the private and public sector. Garcia, a U.S. Air Force

Academy graduate, is a highly decorated military officer who was appointed by both the Obama and Bush

administrations to oversee all Air Force Academy operations as Chairman of the Board of Visitors. After five

years of service, the Secretary of the Air Force awarded him the Distinguished Public Service Medal for leading

“a historic transformation of the Board of Visitors and increasing candidate diversity at all service academies.”

In recognition of his contributions to expanding Latino influence and reputation, Hispanic Business, Latino

Leaders and PODER magazines have all recognized Mr. Garcia as one of the most influential Hispanics in the

U.S. Additionally, Univision Network selected him for their series "Orgullo Hispano," a feature that spotlights

Hispanics who have made an exceptional impact on the culture and life of American society, and the book

Hispanics in the USA: Making History featured him as one of 14 Hispanic role models for the nation.

Mr. Garcia will be formally introduced at ALPFA’s National Convention in Orlando, Florida in August.

Basic Business Strategies You Should Ask Yourselfby Chris Mendoza, DBA, LUTCF – Vice President of Multicultural Market Development at MassMutual

Many Hispanics see their businesses as a way to achieve the American Dream and passing their business along to family. However, without appropriate

strategies in place, you can put those dreams and goals in jeopardy. Here are some basic questions you should ask yourself in the early stages of

your business. We can summarize these questions into basic categories:

What would happen to you, your family or business if you became disabled? Imagine that a 45-year-old business owner who is paying themselves

$100,000 per year was hurt or sick and couldn’t work, yet the owner would need to withdraw $2 Million from the business over the next 20 years.

Would the business be able to survive? If not, perhaps the business owner should consider some form of disability income insurance.

Key Person.

If the business can afford to continue to pay the business owner even

after a disability, is the survival of the business then contingent on

one or more key person or employees? If so, what would happen

to the business if that key person became disabled or died? Perhaps

it would make sense to look at Disability Income or Life Insurance

on one or more of those key employees.

Succession and Retirement.

Here we are thinking about the future of the business and how the

business will fit into the business owner’s retirement planning.

Often, it is easy to think that the business owner will pass the

business along to family, making it important for the business owner

and family to begin the conversation early. To start, think about who

could continue the business at your retirement and then meet with

your advisors and financial professional to make sure that your

wishes are properly documented and funded.

When it comes to protection insurance, you deserve an experienced

provider. That's why we're excited to tell you that through your

membership with ALPFA you have access to discounted Disability

Income Insurance and certain other protection products issued by

5 Ways to Overcome Recruiting Difficulties When Filling Accounting Jobs

by Robert Half International

The competition for skilled workers in accounting jobs is intensifying.

The unemployment rate in the financial sector has dropped from a

recent high of 6.9 percent in 2010 to 4.3 percent for the first four

months of this year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Correspondingly, salaries are on the rise, and finance and accounting

employees’ confidence level is at a seven-year high. It’s no wonder

that companies today are worried about recruiting and keeping skilled

talent. Sixty-three percent of the more than 2,100 CFOs polled in a

recent Robert Half survey said it’s difficult to find skilled candidates

for their professional-level accounting and finance jobs.

Consider In-House Talent

Before investing time and energy into recruiting, consider the staff you already have. Do you have employees who are able and willing to take

on the extra work – and possibly qualify for a raise or promotion? Would additional training prep them for greater responsibilities? As a manager,

your ultimate goal is to get the job done. If you can do that with your present staff without overburdening them, then you’ve just saved yourself

the time of recruiting and training – not to mention the potential headache of a bad hire. This also buys you additional time to consider the best

steps to take going forward. And remember: Whether you’re promoting from within or hiring externally, always take the time to look at the

big picture; it’s smarter to fill real needs rather than offices and cubicles that happen to be empty.

Practice Non-Urgent Recruiting

No manager wants to be in a position where there’s too much work and not enough workers. To find the best people to fill finance and

accounting jobs, make recruiting an ongoing goal. “A pipeline of potential candidates can speed up the hiring process and prevent problems

associated with being short-staffed, like burnout of key employees,” says Paul McDonald, Robert Half senior executive director.

ROBERT HALF

ALPFA IMPACT 10

Page 11: Summer 2014

Take Advantage of Your Network

Tap your friends and acquaintances when recruiting for accounting jobs. To deepen your candidate pool, spread the word in person, including at

professional networking events, and email contacts about vacancies. Put job postings on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, and encourage your

network to share and retweet them.

Be Smart About Hiring Strategy

Top-tier candidates for accounting jobs are in high demand, and they can receive multiple offers and counteroffers. To attract the best talent, let

them know why your company is a great place to work. Call attention to sought-after benefits like generous time off, flexible scheduling options

(including telecommuting) and respect for work-life balance. Make sure your compensation is above average. Consult the Robert Half 2014 Salary

Guide for the starting wages of more than 350 positions in accounting, banking and financial services. Above all, once you’ve found the right person,

don’t dither on making the official job offer.

Get Outside Help

Agencies that specialize in accounting and finance jobs understand the

kind of candidates you’re looking for. With their deep and wide

networks, they can often quickly provide a short-list of contenders.

They’re also skilled at helping out in each step of the hiring process,

from creating an airtight job description and vetting candidates to

negotiating a compensation package.

With an average of four weeks to hire a staff-level finance worker and

five weeks for management, companies that can’t wait that long can use

recruiting firms to speed up the process. Another benefit: Recruiters

have access to accounting and finance professionals who may not be

actively seeking a new job, but might consider the right opportunity.

No company can afford a bad hire, especially small businesses with their

fewer layers of management. To minimize the risk, consider bringing in

interim employees on a temporary-to-full-time basis. This ensures an

employee is a match for the company before extending a job offer.

Trying out a new employee this way also allows you to bring someone

new onboard in matter of days instead of weeks.

Don’t let a shortage of qualified candidates stymie your recruiting

efforts. There are several strategies at your disposal to fill accounting

jobs, even specialized in-demand positions. By tapping in-house talent,

recruiting constantly, networking, hiring smart and using a recruiting

firm, you’ll be able to find and onboard just the right staff quickly,

efficiently and painlessly.

largest specialized staffing firm placing accounting and finance professionals on a temporary, full-time and project basis.

Millennials Still Covet the American Dream of Homeownership

by Todd Matthews, PNC Mortgage

Homeownership is often called the American dream, but most

twenty-something’s say it’s just a dream.

Only 23 percent of millennials own a home or are actively looking,

according to a new “financial independence” survey by The PNC

Financial Services Group. Overall, the survey found financial

independence – being able to pay living expenses and establish a

household – is even more elusive than it was two years ago for 20-

something’s coming of age amid global economic uncertainty.

Although the housing market has recently picked up, many still prefer

to rent rather than own a home, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

So is Gen Y holding back the housing recovery? Only a bit.

Nearly a third of millennials surveyed say they are saving for a home

or thinking about it, so this generation of Americans may not be

completely ready just yet, but they are still preparing to take the leap

to homeownership.

Achieving home ownership can be challenging. However, learning

about the home buying process can make the dream of moving into a

home come true.

Understanding the Mortgage Process

Potential homebuyers, from Gen Y and beyond, are poised to take one of the biggest financial

steps in their lives. Here are some “need to know” basics before jumping into the housing market:

Know what you can afford. A good rule of thumb is that the home

price should be no more than 2.5 to 3 times annual income.

The next step is equally important: Calculate debt-to-income

ratio: Take total monthly debt payments, add anticipated monthly

mortgage payment (including taxes and hazard insurance) and

divide into monthly income, with debt not exceeding 36 percent.

Online calculators, such as www.pnc.com/homelendingcenter, can

help too.

Don’t forget to get a pre-approval from a mortgage lender before

you begin searching so you know how much you can afford.

Buyers will take you more seriously.

Research the types of mortgages that work best for you - fixed or

variable rate, and length of mortgage repayment.

Know all the costs of your chosen home including down payment,

closing costs, taxes, insurance, utilities, repairs/maintenance and

homeowner association dues or assessments.

Make an offer! And once accepted, request a title search to

determine if there are any outside claims on the property, and a

certified home inspection to see if the structure is free of

problems, code violations or other potential concerns.

The Closing: Well before you close, you’ll need to provide a

number of documents to verify personal financial circumstances

including income, employment, down payment funds and

creditworthiness but you may do it again right before the closing

to confirm nothing has changed. Conversely, lenders will provide

a great deal of information so you understand all aspects of the

loan and closing costs. You’ll also get to meet all the parties

involved at the closing when you make it official by signing the

documents and get the KEYS!

On Thursday, January 23, ALPFA Boston presented Diversity in the

Boardroom: Securing a Seat at the Table, an event dedicated to the

importance of diversity in corporate and non-profit boards and how

individuals can participate on these boards. Hosted by Bingham

McCutchen and sponsored by Eastern Bank, the event exposed

attendees to a panel of successful women with extensive board

experience. Bob Rivers, President & Chief Operating Officer at

Eastern Bank, welcomed attendees by sharing the bank’s

commitment to diversity on its corporate board and how it helps the

bank better reflect the communities it serves. He also introduced

Carol Fulp, President and CEO of The Partnership, as the moderator

for the evening.

Carol introduced the award-winning documentary Insider Game I by

the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility (HACR);

which captures a group of Hispanic leaders struggling with the lack of

gains in corporate boardrooms over the last 30 years. Dr. Lisette

Garcia, Director of the HACR Research Institute, explained how the

video is "taking the conversation [of diversity] to the next level,

ensuring our voices are heard. These conversation are now

happening in public forums, where we are not only the topic of the

discussion but an important part of them."

Panelists, Phyllis Barajas, Founder & Executive Director of Conexión;

Dr. Garcia; Betty Francisco, EVP, Corporate Relations and General

Counsel Millennium Partners Sports Club Management LLC; and

Laila Abou-Rahme, Partner at Bingham; discussed their experience as

members of corporate and non-profit boards and provided useful

advice to attendees on how to join a board.

Radhames Nova, Executive Director of ALPFA Boston, and Chris

Gabrieli from Empower Schools, concluded the event with current

board opportunities within ALPFA Boston and a description of the

Empower Schools Pilot Board Service Fellowship, a pilot program

that will help place emerging Latino business leaders on boards of

leading educational organizations in Greater Boston. To read the full

ALPFA IMPACT 37

The Seattle ALPFA Chapter launched the year with an amazing

networking reception at the W Hotel. The Annual Kick-Off was held

on January 23rd, 2014 and was well attended - with over 115 guests

and with the presence from most of the chapter’s business partners

including Microsoft, Boeing, Northwestern Mutual, Starbucks,

Deloitte, and PwC among others.

At the Kick-Off, the chapter had the pleasure to introduce the

upcoming board, present on the value, mission and benefits of

becoming a new member. This year, our goal was not just to

network but instead to get to know our clients; members and

sponsors. The board members strategically split and networked

among our members and sponsor to understand their needs, learn

why they joined ALPFA and what were they hoping to get out 2014’s

Programming.

A portion of the evening’s program also featured an ALPFA Cares

partner: Community for Youth (CfY). CfY is local non-profit

focused on creating mentorship relationships between professionals

and high school students. It was very encouraging and exciting to

hear about such a great organization whose goal is to decrease the

high school drop-out rates and the high number of young people

headed to jail. Many of our members were very interested in such a

great community service program and are now serving as mentors to

many high school students in the Seattle Area.

As the night was coming to an end you could hear the excitement

from all our members and sponsors for our upcoming events. They

were most excited about our first Latin Night event, a

social/fundraising event aimed at raising money for the student aid

fund. The chapter was also able to sign up five new members and get

multiple members engaged in helping the board as well as becoming

volunteers for upcoming events.

Overall, with great representation from all our sponsors as well as

the number of attendees we can agree that this was a successful

event and a great way to start 2014!

ALPFA Cares is one of the key programs offered by ALPFA Boston.

With a focus on education, its mission is to give back to the local

communities and connect members with other non-profit

organizations for the opportunity to engage in community service

activities. On Saturday, January 25, it did just that.

Twenty-two, seventh and eighth grade girls, gathered excitedly at

Esperanza Academy's auditorium for the Latinas del Futuro: Pathway

from Promising Student to Latina Leader event. The academy is a

tuition-free, independent middle school in the Episcopal tradition

that welcomes girls of diverse faiths, races and cultures from

Lawrence. Chris Wilson, Head of the School, welcomed the more

than 15 ALPFA Boston volunteers and introduced Yvonne Garcia,

President of ALPFA National.

Yvonne began the event by offering the girls a road map to success.

She explained how “being Latina is the coolest thing” and how the

girls should embrace their heritage and use it to propel them into

greatness.

To further reinforce these messages, Yvonne introduced Stephanie

Aragon, Vice President of ALPFA Cares who was instrumental in

planning this event. Stephanie has been working with the school for

several months and was eager to moderate a panel of five

professional Latinas.

Migdalia Diaz, President of ALPFA Boston, Shany Porras, Information

Protection Manager at KPMG, Sara Suarez, News Director at

Univision, Adriana Rojas, Counsel at Bain Capital, and Rossemary

Calderón, Senior International Marketing Consultant for Sun Life

Financial, shared their challenges and triumphs in their paths to their

success. “Take risks,” “Follow your dreams,” “Listen to your parents

who have your best interest in mind,” “Live on campus when you

attend college and study abroad,” “Study hard, prepare, challenge

yourself,” were just a few of the statements shared by the panelists

as the keys to succeed.

The event also included roundtable discussions with more

professional ALPFA women who shared their own success stories

and answered one of one questions from the girls. In the end, ALPFA

Cares volunteers left overjoyed with their interactions with the

promising students, and in turn, the girls left empowered to take on

the world and achieve their dreams.

The success of the 2014 focus has been the result of WOA’s strategic

partnership with the ALPFA Institute to develop a robust framework.

In addition, we have been working closely with all ALPFA chapters

nationwide to make the program accessible to all members across the

country. We are thrilled to share that 100% of local chapters have/will

deliver the 2014 WOA program before the end of 2014.

The 2014 ALPFA National Convention will mark the second year

since WOA launched its three-year umbrella theme of “Building a

Legacy of Latina Leadership”. ALPFA women leaders across the

country immediately identified themselves with this mission and

strongly committed to what became a tipping point for this strategic

women's initiative.

We encourage you to identify the tracks that are of interest to you and

to follow us on our social media outlets (below) and newly launched

WOA Blog (below) where you will find detailed information on the

tracks, background on presenters, and steps to sign up in advance for

the breakout sessions. Finally, we will unveil next year's program

theme so you won't want to miss joining us for the day!

I would like to recognize the Strategy Development Committee for

their tremendous effort and contribution to the WOA Day program.

It was a missed appointment that lead Maritza Montiel to meeting

with a recruiter one afternoon and that lead to a 40-year career

with Deloitte. Maritza has served in several leadership positions

including Regional Managing Partner, CEO of the Federal Practice

and, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Vice Chairman, making

her the highest-ranking Latina at Deloitte. Maritza was also

appointed to lead the Learning and

Development design and implementation

of Deloitte University. She attributes her

success to having a strong family, being

willing to take risks, and having a passion

to develop leaders.

Dare to be ExtraordinaryMaritza Montiel, Vice Chairman, Deputy CEO at Deloitte shares some of her personal journey inbecoming the highest-ranking Latina at Deloitte and also a Latina leader.

How did you choose accounting as your field of study at University of Miami?

Growing up I always wanted to be a doctor. Unfortunately, my Dad died during my senior year in high school making that not an option financially

for our family. In high school I scored very well in mathematics so I chose accounting because it was the closest to a business degree with numbers!

I also had a bookkeeping class in high school and was mentored by a great teacher, so the decision was easy.

In the 1970s, accounting was not an industry with many women, and few of those women were Hispanic. Entering a field with so few women meant

not having a female role model or mentor to go to for guidance. Back then, at Deloitte, you were assigned a career counselor and it was usually a

white male due to the typical population of a large accounting firm. But it was by luck that I was assigned to a wonderful counselor, Leon Mayshak,

who ended up being my mentor and great friend who really helped me in my formative years.

How did Leon mentor you?

Well first, he talked me out of quitting several times! But Leon also took the time to get to know me as a person and we found we had a lot in

common; we identified with the underdog, we had a personal mission to help people, and we both came from humble beginnings. He took a personal

interest in my career and wanted me to succeed. When I would get passed up for an assignment, he would say, ‘It’s because you’re a girl.’ But

instead of letting me feel sorry for myself, he would tell me to get over it, speak and act like the person who wanted and deserved that assignment.

At the time I thought he was being a little harsh, but it’s exactly what I needed to hear and advice that helped me to vocalize my merits, and ask

for what I wanted. His famous saying was always “hang in there” so I did!

And speaking up did not end with just advocating for yourself.

Yes, it’s true. I have always felt the responsibility to speak up for those who, at times, may have no voice or are misunderstood or unfairly judged.

Many years ago, two colleagues were up for partner. Colleague one was a little less polished but showed great intellect and potential and, some

would say, more drive than colleague two who was more polished, handsome, and also very smart. I got the news the decision had been made to

admit colleague two to the partnership and defer colleague one to the following year. I knew this was wrong and felt there was no business reason

for the decision. In my opinion, it was purely based on what I perceived to be unintentional bias; therefore, I had to speak up and I was willing to

risk my own career for that. I told the leadership of the organization what a bad decision that was and that either both of them were admitted or

I was out. It was a BIG risk, but when you are acting out of the right principle, it’s an easy decision. Both ended up being admitted, and look how

well Joe did, he is now CEO!

How do you help others become better leaders?

As a leader, by definition, part of your many roles is to help develop and grow those who you work with. I believe if you invest in people and help

them succeed and deal with barriers, help them get better and to accomplish their dreams, everything in life becomes so much easier. As a leader,

my philosophy has always been …. you can get what you want if you help others get what they want! It takes time and a willingness to do it but

it’s so great when others you have seen struggle or be challenged flourish and do extraordinary things!

There has been so much said and written about “Lean In”; as someone who has successfully broken the glass

ceiling, is the book giving women enough advice?

It’s hard to argue with many elements of the book or the success of Sheryl Sandberg. What I have seen is a pattern of women trying so hard to be

a team player that they sometimes are afraid to speak up in meetings or be direct about their aspirations so that they are creating a disadvantage

for themselves. If you are only raising your hand you are still waiting for someone to call on you and it may not happen, especially in a room full of

highly competitive men! Leaning in may, at times, not be enough; sometimes you have to dive for the ball and maybe even throw a body block!

The pace of competition in business and available leadership positions are very limited if that’s what you desire,… if you want to be CEO or COO

or the leader of the group you need to be fully prepared to compete for the role. That requires you do many things to get noticed, but also be

prepared to share why you think you are the best person for that role! You have to believe in yourself before others do! So my challenge to you

is to Dare to be Extraordinary in everything you do in life and professionally!

You have done so much; not just in breaking barriers, but showing that you can stay true to yourself, and still

succeed. And now you are retiring! How do we keep this momentum going when there are still too few women

in positions like yours?

Well I am retiring from Deloitte not life! I feel energized and excited for the new adventures that may come my way. I hope to serve on public

company boards as a director, be involved in executive coaching, spend more time with family and travel to new exciting places! I have been blessed

by the Lord and hope to be able to be involved in things to make the world a better place!

As part of International Women’s Month, the Hartford Chapter of

ALPFA empowered Latinas in business to unleash their inner power

and transform Latina Leadership during the 2014 Women of ALPFA

Summit. The annual celebration of Latinas in business took place on

March 28 at the Hilton Hartford Hotel in Hartford Connecticut.

The event hosted close to 300 guests from the Massachusetts and

Connecticut region and granted attendees the opportunity to

network, support local entrepreneurs as part of the small business

showcase and be transformed by presenting speakers.

“Professional Latinas are known for managing many different roles,”

said Lisandra Bonilla Lassen, President of ALPFA Hartford Chapter.

“They are mothers, sisters, employees, entrepreneurs, professionals

and so much more. Events like Women of ALPFA are essential to

grant our Latina business leaders a time and space to focus on the self.

This is a place where current and future Latina leaders unite and are

empowered with professional development, new connections, shared

experiences, struggles and ambitions.”

The event was highlighted by the keynote presentation of Djuana

Beamon, Director of Enterprise Diversity and Inclusion for Travelers.

In her presentation the corporate leader shared her personal insight

and story of success. As part of her keynote address, Beamon

explained the importance of Latinas in the U.S. and provided a global

analysis of Hispanic Leadership.

After the luncheon, Albertus Magnus College Business Professor

Norman Davis, Ph.D. provided a workshop based on his playbook for

trailblazers. “Many Latino leaders are the first in their department, are

expected to deliver results, but also bring with them the richness of

their diverse heritage,” explained Davis. In his workshop the author

and professor inspired participants to celebrate diversity and

provided tips on dispelling myths and stereotypes created by

ignorance and anxieties.

Women of APLPFA concluded with a panelist of leading Latina ladies:

Ana ValentÍn-Jackson (Program Director of Leadership Greater

Hartford), Luisa Pinto (Director, International Project Management

Office (PMO) at Travelers) and Lourdes Montalvo (Director of

Constituents Services and Community Outreach, Connecticut

Secretary of the State Office). Panelists shared insights on their road

to success at the corporate, non-profit and government sectors.

Through an interactive presentation guests were able to learn from

the journey of the panelists and benefit from their experience.

“The 2014 Women of ALPFA was electrifying! The energy felt from

our guests was exciting,” added Lisandra Bonilla Lassen. “We look

forward to building up on the success of this year’s and contributing

to the empowerment of success of our Latina business leaders and

our ALPFA Familia.”

ALPFA Chicago Chapter partnered with the National Association of

Black Accountants (NABA) and BMO Harris Latino Alliance and

W.I.S.E employee resource groups to host the Women Winning in

the Workplace event. The event focused on the heightened

awareness around elevating women’s voices in Corporate America.

A main discussion point included the lack of women in leadership

positions. Although more women are taking the reins within

Fortune 500 companies, further progress is needed. As of July 2013,

only 22 women occupy slots as CEO at Fortune 500 companies. In

order to close this leadership gap, this event sparked meaningful

conversations with prominent female leaders who are making

positive contributions in their professional and personal lives.

Panelists discussed steps to enhance professional profiles and

advance career goals. Certifications, Advanced degrees, Women in

Leadership, Communication, and Networking were all discussed as

methods of professional advancement. Over 220 attendees heard

career insights from the following executive women who had the

courage to Win in the Workplace.

What do you get when you blend customer focus, profitability, and the

need for immediate action in a fast paced retail environment like

Macy’s? An Omni-channel Gross Margin Planning Manager.

Ylia Rosario is a Senior Gross Margin Planning Manager at Macy’s. Like

many of you reading this article, she is a 1st generation Latina from an

urban environment who grew up speaking two languages while

navigating two very distinct cultures. Though challenging, she realized

early on the importance of making the most of the sacrifices made by

her parents who moved from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

Ylia started her career immediately after college as an analyst. Over

the years, Ylia developed skill-sets that have allowed her to gain a deep

understanding of product profitability, financial analysis and planning.

With this knowledge, she was able to create data intensive tools

utilized by key players -- from marketing to operations-- to meet Omni

channel demands with alacrity. Said tools play a material role in the

decision making process of corporate executives regarding sales,

profitability and inventory management.

Have you have ever purchased a Michael

Kors watch from macys.com? If so, then

chances are you made an Omni channel

purchase. Why? Because .com didn’t own

the inventory, rather it used a store’s

inventory to fill your order. Macy’s focuses

on giving you what you want when you

want it; this is Omni Channel retailing –

understanding customer demands and then

figuring out the quickest and most profitable

way to meet that demand.

Ylia earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance and Investments from the

Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College in New York. A degree

in Finance and a passion for fashion lead her to the “Magic of Macys”!

Professional and Student Conference and Career Fair “Preparing

Yourself for Career Opportunities", Luck is what happens when

preparation meets opportunity. – Seneca. The event was attended

by over 80 professionals and students who spent the morning and

early afternoon at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). The

conference was an inclusive event, open to all professions and

majors. The objectives of the event were to provide attendees with

information regarding preparation for career opportunities while in

college or early in their careers, meet employers, and network.

Dr. Lillian Bonery-Bouchillon, a research analyst with the Dallas

Community College District was the guest speaker. Marisa Portillo,

Texas Women’s University (TWU) Chapter Executive Vice

President, reported that Dr. Bonery-Bouchillon, touched on some

great advice. Research and participation were the highlight of her

speech. As a researcher, she advised to always conduct research on

any future employer, industry, school, or subject of interest in order

to be well prepared for any opportunities that may arise.

Participation, she mentioned, is essential to personal and professional

growth. Minhaz Khan, a UTD student member commented that he

appreciated Dr. Bonery-Bouchillon’s encouragement that included

the pursuit of higher education in combination with career

advancement. Dr. Bonery-Bouchillon advised that even though we

are busy, we need to make time to be part of organizations such as

ALPFA. Ms. Portillo commented that an added event bonus for the

TWU chapter was that Dr. Bonery-Bouchillon obtained her

doctorate degree from TWU.

they took to get where they are today. Panelists were as follows:

the discussion and not just advice on how to get the next promotion.

During the conference, attendees had an opportunity to network.

Arnold Olivarez, President of the University of North Texas (UNT)

Chapter introduced President Elect, Jessica Diaz to members of the

DFW Professional Board. Mr. Olivarez will earn his Bachelor in

El Mundo: Leaders Come Together in Lawrence, Boston

Great things happens when the leading Latino leadership organization in

the nation works together with an emerging generation of young

professionals.

ALPFA Boston, the local chapter for the nation’s premier business and

Latino leadership organization collaborated with the Greater Lawrence

Young Professionals Network (GLYPN) to host “Emerging Leaders:

Revitalizing Communities by Cultivating Leadership” which was attended

by over 150 professionals from both Boston and the Merrimack Valley.

The event featured a distinguished panel composed of Rosalin Acosta,

Managing Director of Enterprise Investments, Yvonne Garcia, Senior VP

of State Street Corporation and Joe Bator, Senior VP of Eastern Bank.

Guests heard from the three business leaders who spoke about their

road to success and the importance of giving back to the community as

Quin Gonell, GLYPN President moderated. “This event also showed

that young professionals will play a crucial role in the growth and

development of the Greater Lawrence región”, stated Pavel Payano,

co-founder and past President of GLYPN.

Radhames Nova, Executive Director of ALPFA Boston Featured in MerrimackValley’s Magazine of Emerging Latino Professional LeadersBy Will Courtney

Radhames Nova doesn’t just believe that Latino

professionals have an advantage over many of

their peers, he sees it every day. “For those of

us who focus on education, get a college degree

and a master’s degree and develop a good

professional résumé; it’s a huge advantage to be

a Latino with those credentials,” he says.

Nova was an eighth-grader who didn’t speak any English when his family

moved from the Dominican Republic to Lawrence. He attributes his

success to taking advantage of the help that was available to him, from

programs at the Boys & Girls Club to mentors that guided him through

Central Catholic, Middlebury College in Vermont, and the Boston

University School of Management.

He worked as an executive in the private and nonprofit sectors before

getting the opportunity to lead the Boston chapter of the Association of

Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA). As executive

director, he helps nearly 3,000 Latino professionals and students

connect with Boston-area companies such as TJX and State Street

Corporation, who pay ALPFA for the service. “The only way to drive

business is to have an employee base that represents your customer

base and can expect what those customers want,” Nova says. “If you talk

business to a CEO and say, ‘Look, by mentoring and developing the

Latino community, your bottom line will improve.’ They listen.”
