Section Chair’s Message Pamela Gill, Section Chair

It has been a fun and eventful summer packed with a variety of training and activities held for our Section members. Events included System/Operator training, Leadership Forum training, Administrative Professionals training, work-shops, webinars, participation in community events, and last but not least, ACE 16. All of these kept our committees and staff very busy. This fall and winter there will be several more upcoming events. You can find them on our website at ww.ims-awwa.org. A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who make these events possi-ble. We could not do them without your help and support.

A number of Section members attended ACE 16 in Chicago, IL. The ses-sions were excellent and provided timely infor-mation on many issues in the water industry. The Exhibit Hall served as a great resource to visit with vendors and find out about new products.

At ACE, our members and the Section received awards and participated in the Meter Madness competition.

* Mark Stanley, O & M Superintendent, Salt Lake City Public Utilities, was awarded the Fuller Award for his many contributions to the water industry.

* Central Utah Water Conservancy District re-ceived the AWWA Exemplary Source Water Protection Award.

* The Member Engagement Committee was awarded the AWWA Club 7 Award READ MORE

This year’s AWWA Summer Workshop training for staff and board members was well worth the time and effort to attend. Several staff and board members were in attendance. The purpose of the workshop was to help sections understand how they fit into the larger picture of AWWA.

The workshop kicked off with a great presentation by Melanie Goete. If you have not read her AWWA Journal articles and read her book Communicating Water’s Value: Talking Points, Tips and Strategies login to AWWA and download her articles right now. She discussed how to communicate to the pubic during a crisis. Her best advice is to have a crisis plan now, before you need it. Make certain that you have the correct phone numbers to contact the correct people in a crisis. She also suggested that fostering relationships with the media and other agencies before a crisis is the best way to survive an actual crisis.

Our own Alane Boyd gave a wonderful presentation on Total Water READ MORE

ACE16 Highlights Alane Boyd, Section Executive Director

I had a very busy, but also enjoyable time at ACE16 in Chicago. Nicole Baser also accompanied me. On Sunday morning Nicole and I met some other Section Staff for breakfast and picked up our registra-tion. Sunday afternoon there was a meeting for Section Staff. I presented on the status of AWWA2020 Branding Program for the Section Staff. 41 out of 43 Sections adopted one of three AWWA Section brands. This outcome was accomplished more quickly and smoother than expected. Nicole and I learned about other new and ongoing programs for Sections. We attended the Opening General Session (OGS) on Monday morning. And, boy was there a big crowd. Nicole and I had to get there bright and early so that we could hold the Intermountain Section sign for our members to sit with us. The Section had about 75 members attend ACE. This is a fantastic turnout. I would suggest that any of you who have not gone to ACE, find a time in the coming years to attend. Next year it is in Philadelphia, PA on June 11-14, 2017. After the OGS I attended a Women’s Networking Event with Pam Gill, our Section Chair. We got to meet some other wonderful women from around the world. Then, I attended an awards ceremony where Cen-tral Water Conservancy District received the 2016 AWWA Exemplary Source Water Protection Award for a large source water system.

On Monday afternoon I attended my last Member Engage-ment Committee (MEDC) meeting. I have served two terms on this committee. The MEDC is trying to figure out ways to measure engagement. I volunteered for the Section to use our database to look at member engagement. I will be going off of the MEDC, but Lisa Anderson was voted to be a mem-ber of the MEDC. This is a great opportunity for Lisa and for the Section. Much information on membership is planned and implemented through the MEDC. Also, a great perk for the Section is that, she will get her travel reimbursed to attend the Membership Summit each year that she is on the Committee. On Tuesday morning I attended the Water Loss Committee meeting. This committee developed the Water Audit Soft-ware. Will Jernigan with Cavanaugh Solutions is the chair of the committee. I was able to meet Jeff Oxenfort with RCAP in

Golden, CO. He would like to see how READ MORE
