A Vibrant Christian Learning Community
Summer 2019
This has been an extremely short and busy half term including a two
day Ofsted inspection. The Ofsted report is due for release after half
term.
Our Year 11 students have commenced their GCSE examinations.
Many of them took advantage of the extra revision sessions provided
by staff both before and after school and during the Easter holidays.
We wish them every success as they enter this important stage of their
academic career.
We welcome our new Assistant Headteacher Owen Collingbourne who
has joined the senior leadership team and Alison Woodcock, our Office
manager and Headteacher’s P.A. and look forward to working with
them both.
We have many events to look forward to in the next half of term
including our Parent/Carer Forum on the 13th June. This informal
meeting aims to improve communication between school and

Geography NEWS
GCSE GEOGRAPHY - Fieldwork time!
As part of the GCSE Geography course all year 10 students are visiting
the Lugg Meadows area. Although the meadows are so close to school
many students and staff have not had a chance to visit the area, which
is an ecological gem in Herefordshire with Lammas meadows dating
back from Saxon times! There are over 20 grass species as well as a
variety of herbaceous plants. Two special plants found here are the
snake's head fritillary and the narrow-leaved water dropwort, the area is
a protected SSSI (site of special scientific interest).
During the visits students are collecting data on vegetation species,
footpath erosion and land use in order to test the hypothesis "The Lugg
Meadows i s a broad and balanced ecosystem".
The data collected will be presented and analysed over the next few
weeks in order to make conclusions. This will be examined as part of the
paper 3 exam.
Science The Year 10 Science mock exam is on Wednesday 26th June. The 1:10
min exam will cover aspects of Physics, Chemistry & Biology from the
Year 10 units that students have studied this year. There is a range of
supporting resources that students can use to aid their preparation for
the exams. The exams will be assessed as follows:
40% AO1 Knowledge and recall
40% AO2 Application
20% AO3 Analysis & Evaluation
Resources available for students to use include:
ActiveLearn, past papers available in the student shared area and on
the website, revision trackers, revision guides and lunchtime support
sessions.
Music and Drama Our Ceilidh Band will be fulfilling it's annual engagement at Hereford
Cathedral playing for the Year 6 Leavers Service involving many
primary schools across the county. This takes place on Wednesday 5th
June in school time.
Final Concert of the Year- Thursday 11th July Key Stage 3 Presentation
Evening- including one of our most spectacular massed items yet-
Bohemian Rhapsody. Rehearsals will take place on Wednesday 10th
July and year 11s are welcome to continue to participate.
Bassoon Lessons - We welcome Hazel Martys of the Royal
Liverpool Philharmonic as our new Bassoon teacher. All year 7s have
had a demonstration in lessons, but we have capacity for more
uptake. As the instrument is classed as endangered, schemes are
available to assist beginners. If your child (from any year group) is
interested, please see the email address below.
Taster lessons- we have an extensive range of instrumental teachers. If
your child is interested we can easily arrange demonstrations or taster
lessons depending on numbers and the teacher involved.

PHILOSOPHY & ETHICS Another busy term in the Ethics department. Year 7 have started to consider
the importance of happiness. They have been evaluating whether or not
happiness should be the purpose of life. Year 8 have been exploring key
religious beliefs around death. Year 9 have started to learn about Muslim
beliefs for their GCSE. Year 10 are starting to prepare for their mock exam
and Year 11 will have sat their second paper for the GCSE as you read this
article.
All students in years 9-11 should now be able to log on to Dynamic Learning.
They need their school e-mail address and the centre number which is
32954. If they continue to experience issues please do get in touch. I would
also like to recommend Seneca Learn and BBC Bitesize for revision purposes.
Thank you to all parents and carers who have followed the Ethics team on
Twitter. If you haven’t yet done this you can find us by using @EthicsBHBS
Skills for life
Year 7 have just finished exploring money matters. They have enjoyed
playing a board game that explores how likely it is that they might become
addicted to gambling. Year 8 have been exploring issues related to Mental
Health. Year 9 students are learning about Democracy. We have
welcomed in Sian from WMRSASC INTO Year 9 lessons and Year 10 lessons.
Students have explored issues around consent. A huge thank you to PCSO
Ali and PC Jo for their input into the Year 9 work. They have raised
awareness about crime and drugs. After half term students in Year 7 will start
their Sex and Relationships module. Year 8 will focus on Community Action
and Year 9 will go on to explore issues associated with alcohol.
Law Society
Starting every Monday lunchtime in Room 53 after half term.
Debating Society
We are meeting every Tuesday lunchtime in the library. Please do come
along if you would like to try it out. We’ve had some really fun debates
including:
‘This house believes setting students by ability can help progress’
It was a very heated debate with both sides argued effectively. Thank you
to all the students who continue to involve themselves in this.
PHILOSOPHY & ETHICS Anti-Bullying Ambassadors
Students have worked with the School Council to deliver an assembly
promoting ideas to help raise awareness about bullying. The group are
currently working on an assembly which they will be taking around the
Primary schools to raise awareness further.
Action for Change
The students have continued to work hard making positive changes. The
students have spent this term exploring resources used to deliver Sex and
Relationships education. Thank you for all their input. As a consequence of
feedback from the students additions have been made and activities have
been adjusted. Great work team!
Our Mock Trials Celebration
On Saturday the 9th of February 2019 our BHBS Mock Trials team competed
in the Hereford schools’ mock trials competition at the Herford’s magistrate
court.
We were so pleased to get together again as a team and celebrate with
Year 8 in an assembly. We welcomed the wise words from Mrs Leigh
Brazewell JP. Thank you to Year 8 for celebrating our achievements with us.
We achieved an award for the” Best prosecution team”. The experience
has really made me appreciate the amazing people who work in court and
in the system of justice.
I can’t wait for next year as know we know our “WWW’s and can’t wait to
work on our “EBI’s”. We will welcome all the new members at the Law
society club which meet every Monday in room 53 after half term. I would
highly recommend trying mock trials as it is fun and is something different. I
have also met so many smart and kind students and made so many new
friends.

PHILOSOPHY & ETHICS Anti-Bullying Conference
OUR STUDENTS ARE TRAINED UP TO TACKLE BULLYING.
On 10TH April 2019, 12 students took part in a one-day anti-bullying training
session run by The Diana Award. We welcomed students from schools across
the county. Young people, aged 11-15, worked together and acquired vital
skills to enable them to change the attitudes and behaviours of bullying in
their school by building their skills and confidence to address different
situations, both online and off.
The Diana Award’s free Anti-Bullying Ambassador Programme which is
available to schools across the UK, sees trainers working with students and
other young people to change the attitude surrounding bullying. The
programme has a strong peer-to-peer focus, with trainers giving young
people the skills and confidence to become Anti-Bullying Ambassadors to
tackle bullying in their schools long after the training has finished. The Diana
Award’s anti-bullying work is recognised as world-class thanks to this
sustainable approach.
The training looked at bullying in different situations including face-to-face
and online. At the end of the day, pupils made an action plan of how to
approach bullying issues that may arise in their schools and committed to
their roles as Anti-Bullying Ambassadors.
Thank you to our wonderful students for making students from across
Hereford feel so welcome. Thank you for all the hard work you have done so
far in changing attitudes and raising awareness. Keep up the good work.
TECHNOLOGY NEWS Technology, Design and Innovation
Challenge - Design & Technology
Department
The MTA’s Technology, Design and
Innovation Challenge exists to help teachers promote the great work of their
students by celebrating the creativity and innovation taking place inside the
curriculum. Students simply submit a summary of their existing NEA (Non
Examined Assessment) and there are amazing opportunities for those that
qualify.
Students within the faculty were notified of the competition and their eligibility
to partake, Katie-Mai Chamberlain’s entry has already received a lot of
attention from the judging panel.
Katie’s NEA has been created around the topic – ‘Addressing the needs of
people with disabilities’. Her research and investigation into Alzheimer's was a
very personal journey and with a particular interest in tackling problems related
to dementia. Katie’s final product was a memory photo board, that allows
interaction with the person suffering from dementia, by aiding their memory
with photos of family and friends. What makes it different from photo frames is
the ability to name these photos and change them as often as you like/need,
making this unique and helpful to the person with dementia, by relieving the
stress of recognising people at their door.
As part of Katie’s NEA analysis she has been in touch with Hereford Alzheimer's
Society, they are keen to see her idea and have invited her to be able to join in
on one of their Memory Café (they meet once a month.) to pitch her idea to
families.
Katie will find out by the 7th June if
she has been selected as one of the
Top 20, if successful she will go to
Yamazaki Mazak’s European
Technology Centre in Worcester
where she will present her work to a
panel of Judges. Exciting times
ahead for Katie and everyone in
Design & Technology is very proud
of her achievements.
TECHNOLOGY NEWS Bronze Green Tree Schools Award – Design & Technology Department
The Woodland Trust works with schools across the UK,
encouraging outdoor learning and helping teachers
inspire their pupils about woods, trees and wildlife. We
as a school have registered with the award scheme to
develop more sustainable wood based projects in
Technology.
As a school, we needed to complete various activities
and through these activities we can progress through
the awards scheme. We delighted to say that BHBS
have just passed the Bronze Award.
To obtain this award we needed to improve student
awareness and participation in making our
environment better. Within our Programs of Study in
Design Technology, we teach about the environment
and we have had to prove how we are trying to
recycle and reduce Co2 emissions. We have recycling
bins within the classrooms and these are used to help
other projects throughout the year, no wood within the department goes to waste. Year
8’s box project has been using scrap plywood given to us from a local supplier aiding in
their environment and reducing the carbon footprint. We are constantly striving to enable
our students to be aware of the role they play in reducing waste and the demand on finite
resources. Our students are fully behind the idea. Last year students in an afterschool
activity created some bug hotels using only waste material, they have continued this year
to come along and instead are looking to create a bird house and tables, all using
recycled or upcycled wood from our stores.
In gaining the award we have been picked by the trust to win a ‘copse’ package, this is 30
indigenous tree saplings which consist of Silver
Birch, Rowan and Wild Cherry. This will get
planted in the nature garden which as a
school will also serve to help the teaching of
other subjects, such as Science and
Geography and enable our students to have a
better environment around in which to study.
We are very proud to have managed to gain
this award and we are now striving for the Silver
Award!

Our teams came in 4th and 5th place.
ENGLISH NEWS The English Department are excited to announce that we have a theatre
trip organised for September 2019. Students in Year Ten will be travelling to
Cardiff Theatre to see a production of 'Blood Brothers', a play that they'll
also be studying. Seeing the production go 'from page to stage' will be an
excellent opportunity to immerse themselves in the plot of the play, and
develop a deeper understanding of the characters.
We have also had several entries for our latest Big Blog Theory competition,
which will see several pieces of students' writing featured on a display in
Herefordshire Cathedral.
MFL NEWS Qu’ils mangent de la brioche! (ou des beignets)!
This term has been an incredibly busy one for our department. The exam
season began just before the Easter break with 40+ German GCSE speaking
examinations and, when we returned to school, it was the French and
Spanish students’ turn to sit in the hot seat! We were really impressed with
how well students had prepared for these exams. It was wonderful to see so
many Y11 French students giving up a full morning of their holiday to attend
a revision session on 18th April – and they didn’t even know there would be
doughnuts when they signed up!
Equally impressive numbers attended a ‘last-minute’ breakfast warm up
session last week at 7:45 a.m. on the morning of their recent writing exam.
Now, that is real commitment! Well done to the students (and their parents/
c a r e r s ) f o r m a k i n g i t i n t o s c h o o l s o e a r l y !
Morgenstund hat Gold im Mund!
Year 11 German students are invited to attend a similar session with Mrs
Metcalfe on the morning of their writing exam on Monday 17th June. Emails
have been sent out ind iv idual ly . P lease rep ly to
[email protected] if you would like your son/daughter to
attend.
Auf Wiedersehen, Au revoir, Adiós…
At Easter we said goodbye to a long-serving and much-loved member of
our department, Mrs Rushton. Her contagious love of languages, her
inimitable classroom presence and her strong support for the team will be
sadly missed, but we wish her well in her new ventures and will continue to
fly the flag for multi-lingualism at Bishops.
MFL NEWS Mi casa es tu casa!
Looking ahead to the next half term, we are very much looking forward to
welcoming the next generation of linguists, as we play host to over 100 local
Year 5 students and their teachers at our MFL taster day. Every year this
event is a great success. It is all about having fun with language and
reminds us all that ‘’even a little bit of a language goes a long way’’. We
are delighted to say that, on the Year 5 day this year, our visitors will be
welcomed and supported by our newly appointed Y9 Language
Ambassadors, who will also be helping to plan some other MFL-related
events for next year. Watch this space!
There are three ‘well-known saying/quotations’ in this article – one French,
one German and one Spanish. We will give a prize to the first 5 students who
can tell us what the equivalent for each one is in English – and why we have
used them as a heading for each paragraph!
Stop press>>> Mrs Vicary will be running a warm-up listening session for Y11
German students on Wednesday 12th June 2019 at 11.15 am in Room 19.
This session will run just ahead of the actual listening/reading exam which
takes place at 1pm on the same day. Students who wish to attend will need
to bring a packed lunch with them. The session will finish at around 12
midday which gives time to eat before reporting for their exam at 12.45pm.
Emails are going out to parents as I type – please reply to
[email protected] if you would like your son/daughter to
attend.
Should your son or daughter require a lift key for
medical reasons, we require a letter confirming the
reason why and a £10 deposit which will be
refunded when the key is returned.
It is our school policy that in order to prevent the spread
of sickness bugs, children should remain at home until
they have been clear of ALL symptoms for 48 hours.
Please help us to stop the spread of this infection by not
sending students back too soon.
Thank you
Sickness Virus
We have been asked by local
residents to ensure parents/
carers do not park across
driveways when dropping off or
collecting students.
SCHOOL SHOP
The school shop will be open Tuesday and Thursday
lunchtime (1.15pm-2.00pm) and after school on
Thursday 3.20pm-4.00pm
