Two Camps in One RISE Camp is comprised

of an Upper and Lower program, both of which

provide campers with a rich selection of courses and

activities to choose from. Rooted in the MB Friends philosophy, RISE Camp seeks to inspire and support each camper in their diverse needs and interests. The energetic camp staff is a mix of experienced teachers and coaches, highly-motivated college students and exceptional high school students, many of whom were RISE campers themselves. Come find out why RISE is truly a camp unlike any other!

RISE Camp, established at Moses Brown in 1963, has offered a dynamic mixture of arts, academics, science, sports, and fun to children ages 5-14 for more than 50 memorable summers.

RISE Camp offers a wide variety of courses and activities from which campers can create a custom-designed camp curriculum. RISE is a camp of limitless possibilities!

As part of the RISE tradition, one day each week, Upper and Lower campers come together to celebrate theme days. These include Treasure Hunt, Gold Rush, and the Campers vs. Counselors Basketball Challenge. Events such as the Ultimate Frisbee Challenge, talent show and the Broadway Bound productions make for a unifying and exciting camp experience.

Upper Camp is designed for children who have completed grades two through seven, with a veteran camper program for those who have completed grade eight.

Innovative and Fun CoursesThis summer the Upper Camp will feature courses designed for campers from ages 8-14, with some designated specifically for ages 8-11 or 12-14. This format allows us to offer a wide variety of course options to campers and gives us the opportunity to tailor some of our courses to more specific age groups. As always, some courses are only available to campers attending camp for three weeks or more, while many others are available for campers attending three weeks or less. Many of the courses listed below will be offered again this summer, along with any new courses our counselors develop. All registered campers will receive detailed descriptions of the Upper Camp courses for RISE 2016 in early June.

The morning session will be spent on field hockey skill development and will include individual ball control skills, elimination moves, passing and receiving, 1v1 defense, tactical concepts, and small game play. All skill sessions and games will be played on the turf field to ensure a smooth and fast playing surface.

Coach Paul Janaway directs the Soccer Camp, which is a serious endeavor with coaches expecting full attention and effort. The camp is always a tremendous amount of fun. The program remains a favorite among parents and children because of Paul’s inspirational, encourag-ing, and educational coaching style. The clinics emphasize developing individual skills for competitive play. Players, grouped by age and skill, gain a better understanding of the game, sharpen skills, strengthen tactical awareness, and improve fitness. Planet Fastpitch (Uxbridge, MA), in conjunction with Moses Brown, will be offering a Total Skills Softball Camp for 10-16 year old females.

Planet Fastpitch is known not only for developing great softball players, but more importantly, developing strong and confident young ladies who also “excel at life”. The PFP staff is knowledgeable and dedicated to providing instruction on the specific softball skills needed to make “elite” players.

Training sessions will focus on all positions, and will be similar to those of a college pre-season. Players will receive instruction in infield, outfield, catching, or pitching. Instruction includes hitting, bunting, base running, sliding, and positional defensive play. Mental training and team-building sessions are also provided.

The PFP staff has been extremely helpful over the years to our Moses Brown Softball program, and is one of the reasons that the program improved from a 3-13 season in 2011 to a 21-2 season in 2015.

Track and FieldMoses Brown partners with Proactive Inc. to bring children of all ages and levels of ability exceptional

track and field expertise. This camp is mainly introductory and gets campers to experience a variety of events.

In a fun and educational setting, campers learn the dynamics of track and field from experienced college athletes and coaches. All coaches at Proactive Inc. recognize the importance of educating children while enhancing athletic performance.

Each day, campers learn healthy, correct stretching and warm-up techniques. During morning track exercises, campers choose to participate in the 100m, 200m,

400m, 800m, 1500m, or hurdle events. During afternoon field exercises, children explore long jump, triple jump, high jump, and throwing (including discus and shot put).

At the beginning of the week, coaches evaluate campers on an age-related performance chart. By the end of the session, campers will receive a progress report noting improvement in their chosen events.

Players who attend half days may join other MB camps in the afternoons.

The Moses Brown Tennis Camp is for players ages 5-14 from beginner to advanced levels of ability.

Players enroll for weekly half-day sessions. Early registration is highly recommended since spaces are limited to ensure a low instructor-to-player ratio. On rainy days, participants will play on an indoor court. The camp begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 12:00 p.m. (11:30 a.m. for campers enrolled in a different afternoon camp).

Our coaching staff knows firsthand that young players learn best in an enjoyable environment with an emphasis on fun as well as challenge. With this in mind, they have designed games and drills which will encourage campers at all skill levels.

Each day, participants will enjoy rotating through fun drill stations, working with different instructors on high energy games, stroke production, movement, footwork, and match strategy. No two days are alike. At the end of the week, players receive feedback emphasizing positive growth and noting areas needing improvement.

Players may join other MB camps in the afternoons, but must register separately.

Would you like to create an original game for you and your friends to play? How about developing your own characters and putting them in an interactive story complete with sound effects? The possibilities are endless in this week-long camp! Using the Scratch programming language, a project of the Massachusetts Institute for Technology, participants will build their own games and animations from the ground up, including the graphics and sounds! Along the way, they’ll practice using the design-thinking process, learn fundamental computer programming and problem-solving skills, and gain valuable experience working in a diverse and collaborative environment. Six young sailors, ages 11-16, will ship out of the Herreshoff Museum in Bristol aboard Moses Brown’s 36’ sailing vessel FRIENDSHIP. Onboard for five days, campers will receive personalized, hands-on training and education in an ideal small-group setting. While sailing the waters of beautiful Narragansett Bay, the crew will be exposed to an array of educational experiences in the areas of maritime history, local geography, and marine biology. By working together to achieve a common goal, the crew will develop and improve upon their teamwork, and leadership skills.

With a United States Coast Guard Licensed Captain, an experienced First Mate, and modern navigation and safety equipment, FRIENDSHIP offers a big-boat platform which is ideal for both beginner and advanced sailors to develop and improve upon foundational sailing skills such as rigging, points of sail and trim, aerodynamics, weather, tides and currents, and navigation. Founded in 1784, the historic Moses Brown School is known for nurturing the unique talents and attributes of children, urging them on toward new levels of self-discovery and achievement, and always insisting on a rigorous commitment to integrity. The school honors and upholds Quaker practices and values, while also embracing students of every faith and background. Families are encouraged to learn more about the school by visiting www.mosesbrown.org or www.facebook.com/mosesbrownschool.

Located in the center of Providence, Moses Brown’s 33 acre campus is a lush and green oasis. Children enjoy the use of all facilities, including the state-of-the-art artificial turf field, soccer field, softball diamond, woodshop, ceramic studio, computer labs, and performance halls.

Moses Brown School has offered rewarding and exciting summer programs for more than 50 years. Moses Brown is a Quaker school, and many of the traditions and values that are a part of the Friends’ philosophy find expression in our camps. All camp programs work with the basic belief that everyone matters and has something to offer, silence matters, and truth matters. Reflection and consensus are important, simplicity is valued, differences and diversity are celebrated.

Our campers hail from a variety of places, with the majority coming from surrounding MB communities in Rhode Island and Southeastern New England. We also have welcomed campers from across the country, and from as far away as Austria, China, Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, and Venezuela.
