SUMMER MEETING
AUGUST 23, 2019
" INTO THE WILD"
Registration begins 9am Central Time
Appalachian Branch American Association for Laboratory Animal Science www.appaalas.org 5
The 2019 meeting will be held at the Colorado Convention Center, 700 14th St. Denver, CO., U.S. from October 13-17, 2019. The Spotlight Forum is, "One Health–Connections Between Animal, Human, and Environmental Health.
The One Health concept recognizes that the health of people is connected to the health of animals and the environment. It’s a collaborative, multi-sectorial, and trans-disciplinary approach to bring together veterinarians, physicians, ecologists, and many others to learn from each other and monitor and control public health threats and to learn how disease spreads among people, animals, and the environment.
Please join us in exploring and learning from the One Health initiative and how it relates to our work in laboratory animal science. As our 2019 spotlight topic, submissions in this category can include the diverse topics such as the human-animal bond; disease surveillance, prevention, and response; research (both basic and translational); comparative medicine (the commonality of diseases among people and animals, such as cancer, obesity, and diabetes); disaster preparedness and response; communications and outreach; and much more.

We have survived a dizzying spring and are hoping for a quieter summer at ETSU! We had our AAALAC site visit at the end of May, which went very well. A BIG thank you to all of the DLAR staff for their hard work in getting ready for it!
We still have some more changes to go through before everything settles down, including a switch to a new software system and altering the way that we charge for housing/husbandry. We will be working through these changes in the next couple of months and are looking forward to what will ultimately be a more streamlined process.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the summer meeting!
It has been a busy few months for the Division of animal care. We are always getting ready for inspections it seems. Our USDA inspection is approaching quickly as well as our semi annual inspection from IACUC. We are busy getting our program description ready for AAALAC Triennial site visit during the first trimester of 2020. Our Vandy AALAS officers and Board members are also preparing for our Summer Branch meeting upcoming this August at the Nashville Zoo! Everyone will be receiving more info from our branch secretary soon! Vanderbilt had 3 attendees make our District 4 meeting in Raleigh Durham. There was so much great information shared and a great time was had by all at the Trolley Car arcade Social! It’s so great meeting new people from our District!Renovations are wrapping up with our Autoclave project at the Preston Research building and it seems we are consistently upgrading our Wilson Hall and the Medical Center North 1 facilities to accommodate new and exciting species for our research! We are also looking forward to working with some new summer interns this year very soon!Stay cool this summer and we look forward to seeing everyone at the Zoo!

Hello from Meharry Medical College,
I want to share with you important news: Meharry Medical College is launching the Meharry Center for the Study of Social Determinants of Health. Our new Center will advance our mission by exploring the impact of social determinants – including smoking, alcohol use, food instability, and poverty – on underserved communities, and crafting programs and policies to help people lead healthier lives.
Our first initiative at the Center will involve the study of tobacco and nicotine-related products through a five-year, $7.5 million independent research grant from JUUL Labs, Inc.
This grant will be a unique opportunity to redress the harm that’s been done, making it possible for Meharry students and researchers to engage in significant, original study of tobacco and nicotine-related products.

Passing an AALAS certification exam at any level entitles you to one free year of membership in the Appalachian Branch of AALAS. Attach a copy of your certificate to your membership application and send no monies.
The technician certification designations of ALAT, LAT, and LATG are widely known through-out the varied fields of laboratory animal care. They are universally becoming a requirement for a lab animal care position.
For complete program information, download the Technician Certification Handbook . The handbook contains everything you need to know about application and testing proce-dures, qualification criteria, exam fees, and many other topics, and should be retained for use as a reference during the application process.

TBR Corner Hello everyone! I had the pleasure of attending the District IV meeting as a recipient of the District travel award. It was like a mini national convention. There were many great talks given, and an awesome Vendor hall and a Trolley Car Arcade Social! It was a great place to meet people from the other branches in our District. I presented and shared information with our colleagues about Our Arctic Ground Squirrel project from a few years back. Our branch offers 2 travel awards for the District meeting. It’s a great way to learn and share on a more local level.Speaking of awards, our branch also offers the Steven D Blevins National AALAS Meeting Travel award. This is a $1000.00 award that is given to cover travel expenses for a deserving candidate to attend the National AALAS convention. Applications are accepted until May 31st of each year. We are fortunate to be sending 2 recipients this year. The winners will be announced at our Summer branch meeting! Stay tuned! One of our Premier member benefits is the Appalachian branch awards program. This program is designed to recognize the most notable and deserving members of the branch. Please stop in at our website for more information about the Purina pro lab award, the Technician of the year award, the travel awards I mentioned above, the Merit award and the Vendor of the year award. You can also find information about our branch, the directors and officers, our commercial friends, and even employment. Stop in and see our info at appaalas.org
On The local branch level, I would like to reach out to members of the different institutions of the Appalachian branch. It would be great to have some participation for our spotlight section. Allow me to introduce you in our next newsletter! Remember that we welcome your input for the colleague corner. Do you know a coworker you would like to recognize? Or maybe you would like to introduce yourself to the branch? Let us do a feature spotlight and say hello! Just email me your name and email address and I will do the rest!Would you like to share some interesting tech tips? We are all looking for ways to work smarter! Why not share with everyone. Do you need info about an AALAS certification? Information for submitting a nomination for an award? Want to help a public talk or a community outreach? Let me assist you with the answers to these questions and more. I am your branch representative and I’m here to help you anyway I can. My email address is below and I’m just a click away!
Don’t forget if you plan to shop online, please consider Amazon.com. They will donate a portion of your purchases to the AALAS foundation so let’s go shopping!
Do you want to help your community learn more about animal laboratory science you can conduct an out reach event in your community. AALAS can help! They have free handout materials to help make your out reach event a success - posters, brochures and fun origami mice and frogs! There are free PowerPoint presentations available to help you inform the public about how the mice have helped make strides in heart disease, diabetes, and breast cancer research. Email [email protected] for questions and more details.
Our branch is in need of a newsletter editor. Are you good with the Internet? Would you like to become our next newsletter editor? Our branch has been without an editor for the 2019 year. I have been trying to double as the technician branch representative and the newsletter editor. Please look through this edition to find more information about all of our national headlines happening in AALAS.I appreciate your patience with me as an editor, since I am far from being computer savvy!!!!Have a great summer!!!
