Summer camps will help your child enjoy summer in Evanston by learning new skills and meeting friends with similar interests. The pleasant memories will last a lifetime!

Evanston Resident Camp LotteryCamp registration kicks off this year with a lottery to assign slots using a computer-generated, random list of applicants. The lottery will be open January 19–25, 2016 for Evanston residents only (ZIP codes 60201 and 60202). This process will fairly allocate slots in camps which have high demand. No payment is required to participate in the lottery. See page 29 for details.

No computer or e-mail address? No problem. We expect most people to enter the lottery online, but if you don’t have computer access or don’t want to create an e-mail address, it’s no problem. Just visit any City of Evanston community center or call 311 (847-448-4311) for assistance during the lottery period of January 19–25, 2016. Staff will help you register.

Please don’t wait too long to registerIn order to have safe, adequate staffing levels on the first day of camp, registration will close before camp starts. If registration is closed, ask if there is a wait list; payment is not required to be on a wait list.

Fee AssistanceFee assistance is available to qualified Evanston residents based on family size and total family income. Each camp has a limited amount of fee assistance available.

Arts

General Information About All Arts CampsThe City of Evanston Arts Camps provide enrichment and exploration, giving youth the opportunity to immerse themselves in the arts and practice creativity, all of which leads to a fascinating summer. All camp staff has experience working with children and a background in and love of the arts. Each camp day includes classes in a variety of disciplines and may include field trips, visits from guest artists and special workshops. Most classes are held indoors, but Arts Camp gets outside whenever the weather permits. Most of our camps go to the beach once a week.

Arts Camp LocationsThe location of Full Day Arts Camp will be announced after approval by School District #65—this camp is always located in a District 65 school building and has Pre- and Post-Camp Care. YAP, single week themed camps and Early Childhood Camp are held at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center. For updates, please call 847-448-8263.

CommunicationQuestions about Arts Camps should be directed to Angela Allyn at 847-448-8263. Prior to the start of camp, you’ll receive a link to our Parent Page which has a Parent Handbook, forms and all types of important information. Weekly newsletters are published during camp; upon request, they will be sent by e-mail. Several camps operate blogs and post final projects on YouTube. Full-day camps include lunchtime care.

Full-Day Arts Camps —Visual & Performing ArtsFull Day Arts Camp offers elementary school aged children a chance to immerse themselves in creativity, innovation and art making for a full day. The camp always takes place in a District 65 school (to be announced when confirmed by school district) and offers pre-care as early as 7:30 am and post-camp care as late as 6pm. Campers can register by the week or in four week blocks for a discount. This summer, inspired by EvanSTEM, Arts Camp takes on the theme of The Art of Science, the Science of Art. In partnership with Northwestern’s Office of Science in Society as well as Chicago’s science museums, we will explore everything from the shape of crystals, to why colors look the way they do, and the physics of a hip hop head spin. Campers bring their own lunches for a daily picnic. Camp includes Visual Art, Drama, Movement, Media and Music, as well as visiting artists, scientists and field trips. On Friday we take camp to the beach. Location: To Be AnnouncedAge: 6-12 yrs.Fee, per 4-week session: $665 R/$730 NRFee, per 1-week session: $235 R/$250 NR

YAP (Young Artist Program)Theme: The Art of ScienceNo one ever forgets their time at YAP. This creative program is for teens and tweens looking for empowering experiences in the visual and performing arts. YAP is more than an advanced version of Arts Camp; participants work with artists who help them develop an artist’s voice. YAP is designed for teens age 11 (entering grade 6) through age 16 who have any level of experience in the arts.YAP offers an important balance of advanced arts classes with good old-fashioned summer camp fun. Attend a half-day to concentrate in visual arts (am) or performing arts (pm), or enroll in a full-day combo for the best of both worlds! In previous years, morning sessions have focused on site-specific work and sculpture; afternoons have included monologue writing, stage combat and performance poetry. There is always a varied mix, as YAP classes expose teens to traditional artistic practices, as well as those that are currently popular. This gives “YAPpers” the opportunity to learn new skills, express their individual interests and work collaboratively toward final projects. Four days a week, artist instructors and mentors lead projects which enhance both individual expression and group collaboration. On Fridays, we may welcome guest performers, participate in master workshops, go on a field trip or excursion to the beach, or create “YAP Olympics.” Be sure to dress up on Wednesdays; they’re our imaginative theme days.In our frenzied world summer provides a time for young people to explore passions and develop new mastery—YAP provides a time and space for creating community. New this summer is a return to the Noyes Cultural Arts Center and a compressed three week session framework to better align with other popular Evanston programs. At the end of each session, the Visual Arts program concludes with a friendly gallery opening/reception, while the Performing Arts program presents a sophisticated performance, which the campers themselves assist in producing. Aquatic CampsIf you love the water, you’ll love our Youth Aquatic Camp. Imagine a summer where you can swim, sail, ski and “tube” as you learn about safety and gain respect for the lake! Water activities include:• Sailing• Kayaking• Swimming• Tubing• Canoeing• Water Skiing • Fishing• General Seamanship Skills

For a change of pace when the weather is inclement, there will be out-of-water programs and sports. Theme days will be held, along with an informal Parents’ Night. Questions? Please call Adam Abajian at 847-866 2913.

Very important registration information!Due to high demand and safety concerns, you may register a child for either the morning or afternoon camp per session, but not both. We do not prorate Aquatics Camp.

Swim Test RequiredAlthough campers will wear Coast Guard-approved personal flotation devices when they are on any of the boats or other vessels, they are required to pass a 50-yard swim test (any combination of strokes) before they may participate in aquatic activities. The test will be given in the lake on the first day of camp (weather permitting). It’s in your best interest to be sure the camper can pass the test. Refunds will not be provided if the test is failed.

What about the weather?Aquatic Camp activities can be greatly influenced by weather and lake conditions, much more so than other camps. Many factors may result in campers not being able to boat, sail, paddle, kayak, ski, swim or tube. These factors include heavy rain, lightning, high waves, dangerous currents, high winds and high bacteria count, as well as boat/equipment failure.Aquatic Camp is held every day, even if campers are unable to participate in traditional activities associated with the camp. Our staff keeps children engaged with other fun activities such as fishing, free swim, games and special events.

Camp StaffInstructors are highly qualified and have extensive water sports experience. All staff members are certified in waterfront lifeguarding, C.P.R. and First Aid.

ApparelBring a swimsuit, towel and athletic shoes or sandals. Dress for the weather at the lakefront (it’s often 10° cooler at the lake). A camp bag is provided to participants.Location: Dempster Street Beach, Dempster St. at the lakefront Age: 8-13 yrs.Fee: Varies; see next column

Tennis

QuickStart Tennis Mini-CampsQuickStart Tennis is a specialized program that helps younger children learn basic tennis skills in a fun and supportive environment.QuickStart I Tennis Camp is designed to introduce children age 4-5 years to tennis with age-appropriate equipment including smaller racquets, special tennis balls and smaller nets. Balls bounce lower and move slower through the air, making them easier to hit. Using this equipment helps kids to develop confidence, skill and enjoyment of the game due to the immediate success they can have. In addition, the “games” approach to teaching tennis will help improve their fine and gross motor skills. Parents are asked to stay at the courts throughout the camp session, so they can support their child’s tennis game outside of camp.QuickStart II Tennis Camp helps prepare children age 5-6 years for our popular Junior Tennis Camp programs by using age-appropriate equipment and games. Children will be using equipment similar to the QuickStart I Camp; however, they will begin rallying and working on more challenging skills. The tennis balls, court size and nets are all adjusted to help the kids have immediate success and have fun while learning the necessary skills to play tennis. Please dress for the heat, wear sunscreen and bring a towel and water bottle. Players must supply their own tennis racquet. Rain dates are scheduled on Fridays during the week of participation. Leader In Training (LIT) ProgramThe Chandler-Newberger Leader in Training (LIT) educational program introduces teens to the concept of leadership, helps them become aware of their own natural leadership ability, and teaches them how leadership will help them in their daily lives.Once a week, participants will meet in a classroom setting, where they will participate in discussions, team building activities, and a full curriculum that will teach them about leadership. Participants must attend all class sessions to complete the program—no exceptions or make-up sessions will be allowed. In addition to attending all LIT class sessions, each participant will be required to volunteer for a minimum of 50 hours at one of the summer camp programs managed by Chandler-Newberger Community Center. Through volunteering, participants will be encouraged to use their leadership skills in real-world situations while being supervised by Camp Directors, Assistant Directors and Counselors.Prior to the first class session, participants will receive their first homework assignment via e-mail: a participant/parent packet and a questionnaire. The questionnaire will help us determine which camp best suits each LIT, which will help ensure a summer filled with learning, fun and excitement! On Monday, June 20, teens will be assigned to a specific camp; their first day of volunteering at camp will be June 21. If you want to volunteer for a morning camp program, sign up for Tuesday classes, if you prefer to volunteer for an afternoon camp program, register for Thursday classes.

Contact with Camp StaffPrior to the start of the class sessions, parents are welcome to contact the LIT Supervisor or Program Manager Michelle Tompkins with questions or concerns. Once sessions begin, the LIT Supervisor primarily will communicate with the teen regarding their program experience. One of our main goals is to help teens learn the importance of leadership and responsibility, which includes holding them responsible for their schedule, attendance, class participation and volunteer efforts. However, parents will be informed of their teen’s progress via e-mailed final evaluations. If teens wish to continue volunteering beyond 50 hours, they must have received a score of 75% or better on their final evaluation.

EvaluationsAll participants will be evaluated by their camp and LIT Supervisor on a weekly basis. These evaluations will be given to the participant each week. At the end of the program, a final evaluation will be completed by the camp and LIT Supervisor. A score of 75% is needed on the final evaluation for the participant to successfully complete the program.Location: Chandler-Newberger CenterAge: 13-15 yrs. Prior to the first day of camp, you will need to submit an information form directly to the community center for every camp in which your child is enrolled. For your child’s safety, please include a photo of your child. Please share any important information about your child that will help us make this year’s camp experience the best possible!

Health, Contact Info. and Code of ConductIf your child is ill, do not send him/her to camp. First aid for minor cuts or abrasions is available. Parents, custodians or guardians are responsible for promptly picking up children when the program ends. If a child is picked up more than five minutes late, you will be assessed a late fee of $10 per child per 15-minute period. Continued tardiness may result in your child being removed from the remainder of the session.

If your child is required to attend summer school, please contact the program coordinator so potential accommodations may be discussed. The camp refund policy applies.

Quality AssuranceWe strive to provide the highest-quality programs. We’re confident that all participants will enjoy them. However, if you are not satisfied, we welcome suggestions and ideas that you think will help us improve our programs.
