Academic ClassesMetro’s academic classes (language arts and math) are designed to support student achievement. Students can review difficult concepts or preview concepts for the next grade-level.

Through guided instruction and hands-on activities, students will enhance their skills and achieve a better understanding of grade-specific concepts. Classes are based on Alberta curriculum and are taught by trained instructors.

Customize a schedule of one, two or three weeks; however, different material is covered each week and to receive a full review/preview of main concepts, students must participate in all three weeks (parts A, B & C).

For Grades 1-3, the focus is on developing students’ skills and solidifying a strong foundation for future academic success. Students will benefit from a relaxed learning atmosphere where games and alternative activities may be incorporated to augment learning.

For Grades 4-6, the focus is on ensuring each student spends adequate time on concepts requiring greater attention. An assortment of language arts themes will reinforce communication and reading skills while math assignments will stimulate strategic thinking and reasoning skills.

For Grades 7-9, the focus is on reinforcing key concepts and strengthening study skills to ensure future success as students prepare for high school curriculum.

Give Your Kids an Academic Edge Edmonton Public Schools Metro Continuing Education has been helping students achieve their educational goals for over 100 years and once again this summer, Metro is offering Summer Cool School for Grades 1-9.

Combine fun-filled camps with academic classes to customize one, two or three week schedules and give your kids an ultimate summer experience that supports skill development.

Pre-Camp & Post-Camp CareFor added convenience, Metro has extended its school hours to include pre-camp and post-camp care. Early drop-off is available between 8:00 - 8:45 am for the low fee of $8 per week. Late pick-up is available between 3:45 - 5:00 pm for the low fee of $12 per week. Students will be supervised in a safe environment and can work on class materials or bring their own activity.

“Kids do forget over the summer [and] summer loss is greatest in math computation and spelling. Summer learning programs have a significant positive effect on kids.”

Sports & Adventure Camps

Language ClassEnglish Language LearningStudents can accelerate their English skills this summer with full-immersion ELL classes. Students will enhance their skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking. ELL students may find it beneficial to partake in camps for part of the day to practise their English skills.

Elementary Adventure CampsArtist in Training (Londonderry location)Is your child a budding artist? This camp will introduce students to several art forms through various art projects. If your child loves arts and crafts, this is the course for them!

Movie Magic! NEW (Londonderry location)Does your child have an active imagination? In this course, students will see their ideas come to life! Using 3D modeling software to create and animate characters and settings, students will have the opportunity to experience producing their very own movie. Class will include an introduction to character design, the modeling process and visual composition — create and design just like the pros do. All students will receive the software used in the course for free so the magic can continue at home.

Drama GamesHave a little actor in the family? This acting course will introduce students to several parts of drama including mime, storytelling, improvisation and movement through fun and exciting drama games and exercises.

Junior Scientist (D.S. MacKenzie location)Students will experience the thrill of science. Through hands-on experiments and demonstrations, students will have a new adventure each week.

Learn to Cheer (Londonderry location)Students will discover the basics of cheerleading with this hands-on adventure camp. This is a great place to start if your child is intending to join a cheer team next year or just wants to learn more about cheerleading. Safety and technique will be stressed as students learn basic stunts, motions and tumbling sequences. Cheer will be taught by Amanda Bourgouin, a level 2 cheer coach who is currently the Londonderry Junior High School cheer team coach. She is also a competitive member of the Alberta Cheer Empire Team.

Mighty Robots (D.S. MacKenzie location)With Mighty Robots, students will bring their imaginations to life! Using LEGO Mindstorms robotics kits, campers will be guided step-by-step in the design and programming process to build their very own robots.

Public Speaking (D.S. MacKenzie location) Public speaking isn’t easy! In a safe, supportive environment students will learn how to speak confidently in front of classmates and discover practical tips for making public speaking less terrifying.

Picture Perfect NEW (D.S. MacKenzie location) Students will explore the world of photography in this hands-on adventure camp. Students will learn the basics of digital photography, including how to frame a photo, work with light and use basic camera settings. Participants require a digital camera.

Junior High Adventure Camps3D Character Creation NEW (Londonderry location)Students will use 3D modeling software to create and animate characters and settings in producing their very own movie. Introductions to character design, the modeling process and visual composition will allow students to bring their very own characters to life, just like the pros do. All software used in the course is available to the students for free so they will be able to continue to work on their creations at home.

Cheerleading (Londonderry location)Cheerleading is one of the fastest growing sports in Canada and combines athletic elements with artistic and rhythmic movements. Students will start with learning the basics and proper technique, and will progress to more difficult skills like stunting, tumbling and jumping. Students will learn the various techniques and skills used by competitive junior high teams. Cheer will be taught by Amanda Bourgouin, a level 2 cheer coach who is currently the Londonderry Junior High School cheer team coach. She is also a competitive member of the Alberta Cheer Empire Team.

Photography NEW (D.S. MacKenzie location) Students will find out what it takes to get a great shot — like how to use angles and light to their advantage and the rule of thirds. Students will explore different genres of photography, be introduced to photo editing and use different devices to take pictures. Participants require a digital camera.

Discover ActingWhether they want to see their name in lights or just make new friends, Discover Acting will deliver a week of fun! Students will explore acting through drama improvisation games, storytelling and character. They will also work together as a group to create a short performance piece for family and friends which will include set design and theatre lights.

Robotics (D.S. MacKenzie location)Using LEGO Mindstorms robotics kits, students will build an intelligent robot and program it to perform on-command operations, like moving and turning. Participants will also collaborate with others in a team-based challenge to create the ultimate bot!

The Artist (Londonderry location)From first time artist to junior Picassos, this class will help students learn and refine various art techniques. Students will work on projects to challenge their creativity and reveal their artistic talents.

Soccer Academy (D.S. MacKenzie location) Students will gain hands-on experience in building their technical skills and developing a deeper understanding of the game of soccer. The Soccer Academy will be taught by Jorge Rodriguez, the technical director for the Edmonton Minor Soccer Association and a professional soccer player with over 20 years’ experience. He holds many coaching licenses and has coached provincial rep teams. Jorge believes that soccer teaches much more than skills and competition; it teaches kids how to think in group situations, how to deal with adversity, and also gives them a sense of teamwork and accomplishment.
