Summer Pre-College

FASHION MERCHANDISINGWhen Stephanie spent two weeks of her summer at Marist’s campus in New York, she lived in a dorm, took a class in Fashion Merchandising, and visited New York City to meet with industry professionals. But Stephanie is, in fact, not a college student; Stephanie attended the Summer Pre-College program before she even began her senior year of high school.

Expand your academic and creative aspirations! Marist’s Summer Pre-College is a summer academic program exclusively for rising juniors and seniors in high school. During your time here, you’ll learn from experienced professionals and talented faculty, while spending 14 days in the heart of the historic Hudson River Valley. You’ll make new friends and maybe even discover what you want to be when you grow up. Think that’ll happen at a summer job?

Do you have what it takes to succeed in fashion marketing and merchandising? Are you interested in a career in the fashion industry? If so, the Marist Summer Pre-College Fashion Merchandising Program may be perfect for you! The Pre-College program provides students with an opportunity to “try on” some of the exciting elements of the fashion business, including planning, procurement and marketing. Taught by the faculty of the highly regarded Fashion Program at Marist College, students will learn to research target markets and develop strategies that effectively meet the needs of consumers. Participants will leave with knowledge of how the fashion world thinks, creates and solves problems. The summer experience will be further enriched by multiple field trips to New York City in order to explore the showrooms and apparel markets of 7th Avenue.

Program Goals:• Provides students with an overview of the fashion

industry.• Presents an overview of apparel manufacturing and

product development. • Learn clothing terminology as it pertains to different

garments, silhouettes, and their components.• Complete exploration of fashion career opportunities and

resume development included.• Travel to New York City to learn more about the industry

from professionals in the field.• Upon completion of the course, high school students will

receive three college credits along with the opportunity to explore the exciting world of fashion design.

Campus LifeStudents get the opportunity to experience college life by living in dorms, eating in the dining hall, and meeting new friends from around the world. They can explore the beautiful campus and get a sense of what college-life is like at Marist.

Resume BuildingStudents can boost their resume (and their career) by attending a 3-credit college class before they finish high school. They also have the opportunity to network with industry professionals and potentially earn letters of recommendation.

AcademicsStudents complete coursework related to their area of interest, both on their own and in collaboration with others. Participants learn about the industry from professionals who could become their professors if they attend Marist as undergraduate students

“Overall, the program at Marist was more than what I thought it would be. I learned so much about a topic I’m interested in and might want to pursue as a career. I got a good sense of what college life is like and met great people. I can’t think of a better way I could have spent two weeks.”

– Jaclyn
