Wawadit’la/ Mungo Martin HouseBuilt between 1951 and 1953 by carver and chief Mungo Martin and his son David, this big house was modeled after houses at Fort Rupert.

Royal BC MuseumSince 1886 the museum has collected, protected and shared the human and natural histories of BC. In 1987, “Royal” status was bestowed upon the British Columbia Provincial Museum.

Thunderbird ParkIn 1941, Thunderbird Park opened to the public with the first official collection of intricately carved and deeply storied totem poles. Many of the original poles – now preserved in storage – represent First Nations communities across BC.

3 Dinosaur FootprintsCast from the original impressions left in BC’s Peace River Canyon by a hadrosaur (plant eater) and a carnosaur (meat eater), the prints represent the passage of more than a hundred million years.

Netherlands Carillon Imagine climbing 75 steps in tight circles, then up a 10-step ladder to your 62-bell keyboard. It’s exactly what the Provincial Carillonneur does for our live Sunday recitals. A gift from BC’s Dutch community in honour of Canada’s centennial, the carillon’s music delights downtown visitors.

Helmcken HouseThe oldest building in BC still standing on its original site and open to the public, the cabin of Helmcken House was built in 1852 by the Hudson’s Bay Company for Dr. John Sebastian Helmcken and his wife, Cecilia Douglas. Opens seasonally.

Camp Inside-OutJuly 11 to 15July 25 to 29August 8 to 12August 22 to 26, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thrill kids with a week-long, behind-the-scenes museum immersion. Campers will explore the beauty and diversity of the West Coast through art, science, hands-on activities and behind-the-scenes tours.

In recognition of The Other Emily, campers will also learn

about Emily Carr’s love of nature and the environment. Ages 8-10. $224.

I-Spy Family Saturdays: Low-Tide LookoutJune 4, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.Fleming Beach, Esquimalt

Team up with RBCM curators to uncover the living secrets of the beach. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please wear appropriate footwear. $10/person.(Prepay online at the RBCM website)

Night at the Museum Family SleepoverMay 13 to 14, 6:30 p.m. to 9 a.m.

Ever dreamed of sleeping beside a Woolly Mammoth or curled up next to a sea lion? Come and spend an exciting night at the Royal BC Museum! Activities (including a late-night flashlight tour), IMAX movie, bedtime snacks, early-morning yoga and breakfast.

Indie/folk/pop band, the Provincial Archives, will wind up its national tour at the RBCM. Free.

New Perspectives on EmilyJuly 15, 7:00 p.m.Poetry’s influence on Emily Carr, Dr. Stephanie McKenzie, Associate Professor, English, Memorial University of Newfoundland.

As part of our continuing tribute to Emily Carr, join Dr. McKenzie for her presentation on how Carr was influenced by the poetry of Walt Whitman and Ralph Waldo Emerson, and the art of Vincent Van Gogh.

RBCM’s Kathryn Bridge, Curator of The Other Emily, will discuss the revelation that Emily Carr visited Paris in 1901. What might she have seen there?

Who We Are: Staff Profile

Melissa Frey

Melissa is one of the new faces at the museum, having joined the natural history team in August, 2010 as Curator of Invertebrates. Melissa had quite the route getting here. She grew up in Ohio, completed her Masters degree at SUNY Stony Brook in New York, lived in Barbados, worked for the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, and carried out her PhD at the University of California Davis – all before finally landing in Victoria. It’s a good fit according to Melissa, “Victoria is the perfect size, it’s a great community and I feel very fortunate to be here.”

When she isn’t studying molluscs or teaching children about invertebrates, she likes hiking, tide pooling, taking photos, or paddling on the water. She’s even joined an outrigger canoe team “to become part of the community and to meet people with different interests.”
