Youngsters can explore the wonders of the Sargasso Sea this summer on a five-day voyage on the Spirit of Bermuda.

The Bermuda Sloop Foundation is offering the adventure to 21 boys and girls, aged 12-15.

The sloop will leave Dockyard on August 12 and return on August 16, and is the only overnight voyage taking place this summer.

Tina Nash, business and fund development man-ager for the Bermuda Sloop Foundation, explained that the recession has forced the charity to limit its pro-grammes.

“Typically we would have a lot of programmes this summer, such as sailing to the Canadian Maritimes

and a service project to Haiti, but unfortunately, because of the way the econ-omy is, funding has become a challenge,” she said.

‘Exploring the Sargasso Sea’ will cost $1,785 per berth. There are no scholar-ships or bursaries available this year for families on a

limited income.The Bermuda Sloop

Foundation is focusing on fund-raising at home this summer. Earlier this month it held a fun student art con-test, ‘Art in Sailing’.

“This aimed to raise the profile of the sloop and get young people involved,”

said Mrs Nash. The contest was open

to primary, middle and secondary school students. Prizes included iPads and a berth on a future voyage of the Spirit of Bermuda.

The Bermuda Sloop Foundation also teamed up with Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art for a joint fund-raiser along the same theme of ‘Art in Sailing’.

The museum chose five paintings from its collection and reproduced five prints, using the giclee method, to auction off online at an event on April 19.

The ‘Pirates of Bermuda’ was another fund-raising initiative in which 50 mem-bers of the community were captured and had to raise funds to pay for their own ransom. The ‘prisoners’ included politicians and other prominent islanders .

People could also donate online towards someone having to walk the plank instead, into the waters of Hamilton Harbour on April 6. The fundraiser raised more than $100,000 for the Spirit of Bermuda.

This summer the Spirit of Bermuda will also be available for tourists to sail around the island.

Mrs Nash said: “We’re a non-profit and a charity but are having to rely more on commercial ventures to help us to raise funds.

“This is the first time we will be staying at home this summer since the sloop was built. We will be running charter trips around the island for tourists, plus sun-set cruises.

“We have the only tall ship on the island and so the Spirit of Bermuda is a real attraction. There are a lot of people excited about it. We hope the charters will

help us to protect our youth development programme. We aim to make the Spirit of Bermuda experience a rite of passage for every M3 (middle school) student in Bermuda. That’s our goal.

“The five-day Spirit of Bermuda sailing experi-ence is all about resilience, teamwork and celebrating Bermuda’s history.”

Mrs Nash said: “We are trying to get the community on board to save the Spirit of Bermuda. We have a $1.8 million-a-year budget which has to pay for staff, crew and maintaining the boat, but this year our fund-raising goal is $3 million. This would help to pay off our mortgage and to ensure we are sustainable in the future.” ■

The Department of Youth, Sports and Recreation will host its 42nd Summer Day Camp Program this sum-mer.

The Summer Day Camp (SDC) Program, adminis-tered by the Department, is a day long programme of learning activities offered to children between the ages of four and 15 years.

This year SDC will be hosted for six weeks, com-mencing on Monday, July 1, and ending on Friday, August 9. The 2013 pro-gramme will consist of three preschool camps, five summer day camps, one special needs camp and three teen camps.

There is a variety of activ-ities being offered, such as swimming, arts and crafts, Mini-Cup Match, Camp-A-Rama, Family Fun Day, 6-Aside Tournament, Arts and Crafts and many more fun activities.

The objectives of the pro-gramme are to:

■ Provide child-care ser-vices for students at afford-

able prices.■ Provide a positive, safe

and supervised environ-ment for children.

■ Offer a range of activi-ties and real-life experienc-es that will enhance their day to day lives.

■ Provide summer employment for high school and college students who are aspiring towards a child-related profession.

■ Develop leadership skills and a sense of respon-sibility in youth counsel-lors.

The theme for Summer Day Camp 2013 is ‘Keep it Clean in 2013’. This theme will centre on the campers keeping their community and lives clean.

The campers will be engaged in a variety of activities and learning expe-riences that adopted the six pillars of character.

The character counts approach to character education doesn’t exclude anyone. That’s why we base

our programmes and mate-rials on six ethical values that everyone can agree on — values that are not politi-cal, religious, or culturally biased.

We use the points below to help young people under-stand the Six Pillars, and use the mnemonic devices at right to help them remember.

steal.■ Be reliable — do what

you say you’ll do.■ Have the courage to do

the right thing.■ Build a good reputation.■ Be loyal — stand by

posed to do.■ Plan ahead.■ Persevere: keep on try-

ing.■

Use self-control.■ Be self-disciplined.■ Think before you act —

consider the consequences.■ Be accountable for your

words, actions, and atti-tudes.

■ Set a good example for others.

Fairness: orange■ Play by the rules.■ Take turns and share.■ Be open-minded; listen

to others.■ Don’t take advantage of

David Bascome, president of HSBC Pro Soccer Clinic, has touched the lives of more than 4,500 participants over the last 21 years in a summer programme that focuses not only on soccer skills, but self-discipline and values young people can take with them off the field.

Mr Bascombe recalled: “Over the past two decades we have seen many young people come through the clinic, some of whom start-ed at the age of 10 and are now 32 years old.”

“To have these young men and women visit the camp each year with their stories about what the clinic did for their attitudes and disci-pline for the game and life is priceless.”

This year Mr Bascome welcomes female coach Shannon Seipp, former 1st Division player for James Madison University.

She said: “I have such a passion for soccer and it is incredibly fulfilling to be

able to give back to the soc-cer community by coaching and motivating youth.

“Soccer helped me to develop accountability and confidence which has car-ried over into all aspects of life, so it is great to be able to pass this along to the next generation while having a lot of fun.”

HSBC Bermuda is a com-mitted supporter of our community and has spon-

sored Pro Soccer clinics since its inception in 1992.

Neville Grant, HSBC spokesperson for this year’s Pro Soccer Clinic, said: “HSBC Bermuda is proud to support our young people through sport.

“HSBC’s Pro Soccer Clinic offers our young people more than just an opportunity to upgrade their football skills, as it also encourages our young

people to become excellent teammates both on the field and in our community.

“Teamwork, discipline and focus, when demon-strated through ‘play’, cre-ate great life lessons that later translate into positive professional experiences.”

HSBC Pro Soccer Clinic will be held from July 1 to 5 at the BAA field.

This popular clinic is open to male and female players four to 16 years of age. The programme focuses on providing players with the opportunity to build on their soccer skills and learn the importance of positive discipline both on and off the field.

This year, HSBC Pro Soccer Clinic offers one-week programmes for the Kiddy Kickers, Basic Group and Bridge to Success.

Application forms are now available from HSBC branches: Harbourview Centre, Church Street, Somerset and St. George’s or on the www.hsbc.bm website, ‘About Us, Community Section’. ■

COPY SUPPLIED BY WINKY DINKY DOG

Winky Dinky Dog [WD Dog] rolled onto the scene in June 2004 as a single mobile cart — the first of its kind in Bermuda.

It was a couple of years before others jumped on the bandwagon, but we have maintained not only our brand and product but also our services are continuous-ly evolving to keep ahead of the competition, allowing us to remain the premiere hot dog cart in Bermuda.

Our Butterfield & Vallis establishment has not only become an ‘iconic land-mark’ on a Saturday, but has managed consistently over the last nine years to deliver quality product and service, meeting our cus-tomers expectations.

Our Par-la-Ville establish-ment opened in 2010 and has proven to be an ideal weekly venture for our diehard followers and a new market — the business lunch crowd.

With the ability to diversify our basic menu, due to the larger cart, we embraced the concept and offered up a tasty spin on the ‘home’ dog, with Signature Dogs such as the ‘Winky Dinky Dog’ (tomato, bacon and onion) to unique options like the ‘Red Dog’ (Chouriço with grilled veg-etables) and ‘Sweetsmok’n Dog’ (smoked sausage with pineapple salsa).

Each season we intro-duce new menu items and on April 29 will unveil our newest addition to the pack.

WD Dog’s youngest cus-tomers are an important partnership to our brand and upon launch of our Par-la-Ville location we added a further aspect to the business, a scholarship programme/fund, namely ‘Sweet’n the Deal’.

An ambitious undertak-ing; however, we believe if we can promote education by actively working with schools, its students, as well as local participation, we can encourage education

and aid Bermuda’s youth, no matter how small the contribution.

Funds are raised, in part, from proceeds of Winky Dinky sales, specifically our

‘Gimmie some shug’r’ prod-ucts, as well as joint public activities. ■

COPY SUPPLIED BY SOMERSET SCHOOL OF DANCING

In addition to our ‘Summer Fun’ camp, this year, Somerset School of Dancing will be offering a three-week intensive course from August 5 to 23 with renowned ABT certified teacher Richard Bowman — ‘Ballet with Bowman’.

Our Summer Fun camp runs for two weeks, from 9am until 3pm, Monday to Friday from July 1 to 5 and July 8 to 12.

Your young ones (open to ages 5-12) will enjoy every-thing from ballet and jazz to theatre, singing, hair and make-up, and arts and crafts.

After camp care will be available for these two weeks only (3 to 5:30pm).

Our August Intensive ‘Ballet with Bowman’ is a unique opportunity to learn with one of the best in the dance world.

The course runs from 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday and is open to ages eight to 16.

Richard Bowman is a certified teacher in the

ABT National Training Curriculum, Primary through Level 7.

His experience includes training in New Zealand and the Royal Ballet School

in London, studying with such notables as Mikhail Messerer and Jiahong Wang.

Mr Bowman danced both as a soloist and prin-cipal with internationally acclaimed ballet companies.

We are fortunate to have him visit our island and provide our Bermudian dancers with the opportu-nity to study under him.

Somerset School of Dancing, with over 43 years of dance training, is setting the pace for the highest standard in classical train-ing.

Offering classical ballet, character, modern, jazz and tap we are certified with the Royal Academy of Dance UK (www.rad.org.uk). We are located at the Furbert Building (Old Berkeley Building), St John's Road, telephone 292-0446. ■

SUPPLIED BY THE COALITION FOR THE PROTECTION OF CHILDREN

With summer just around the corner, the Coalition for the Protection of Children wants to remind parents of the importance of checking camp standards.

Many parents are unaware that there is no formal licensing or regula-tion for camps.

Consequently, it is the parents’ responsibility to ensure the safety and standards of the camp they select are appropriate for their children.

The Ministry of Health has published guidelines which parents can use in order to check camp stan-dards.

We have used their stan-dards in devising the follow-

ing guidelines:■ The camp operator

should be at least 21 years of age and have two years’ experience working with children.

■ Staff must be at least 16 years of age and trained in CPR/first aid/Childminding (courses are available with the Bermuda Red Cross).

■ There should be a maxi-mum ratio of 10 children per supervisor for five to eight-year-olds and 12 chil-dren per supervisor for nine to 14-year-olds.

■ The location should be free of health and safety concerns and have suffi-cient shade to protect chil-dren from direct sun expo-sure. Indoor and outdoor space must be provided. The indoor space must be no smaller than 25 square feet per child.

■ Adequate sanitary accommodations should be available, including one flush toilet and one wash basin for every 15 children.

■ A fully-stocked first aid box must be available at all times.

■ Adequate food storage or shelving (at least 10 inch-es above the floor) should be available, plus drinking water.

■ Activities must be age-appropriate.

Swimming and other water activities must take place in designated areas at stated times.

A ratio of six children per staff (for children over-five) is necessary for swimming. Staff must be strong swim-mers.

■ Camp supervisors must have access to transporta-tion at all times in case

of emergency. If children are being transported, the number of children should not exceed the number of age-appropriate, safe seats in the vehicle.

■ Parents should feel com-fortable about asking ques-tions about these areas.

If there are camp opera-tors or staff who do not have the requisite skills, the Bermuda Red Cross offers CPR and first aid training for the public.

We encourage all those who will be working with children this summer to take advantage of this Red Cross service. ■

Educational and fun Summer camps for seven to 13 year olds.

Continuing their popular “Dabble in” themed camps, these educational camps are hands-on, involving labs, experiments, specimens,

videos, interactive com-puter activities, scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, play-acting and competitions.

Conducted in the Sea Below Classrooms, Exhibits, Link Wet Lab, and Lobbies, the camps are mainly sci-ence in nature, but the activities incorporate other disciplines and emphasize the role Bermuda plays in these areas where possible. The programmes integrate literacy and numeracy, and are designed to inform, motivate and excite chil-dren.

Dabble in Seashells: September 5 to 6. This two-day educational camp explores the world of mol-luscs.

Using the Jack Lightbourn Shell Room and hands-on specimens, students learn the major classes of molluscs, how to use shell keys in identifying specimens, shell conserva-tion, discovering interest-ing characteristics, such as shells that are edible ven-omous, used in making dye, used in jewellery, protected

in Bermuda, exotic and invasive, etc.

What are the biggest shells in the world? What are the different types of pearls and how do they form? What are the many different, surprising ways humans have used shells through the ages and up to modern day?

Students discover the answers and have the opportunity to dissect a clam, do a deep water ptero-pod shell lab and assemble a mini-microshell collection.

Dabble in the Deep 1: August 5 to 9. This exciting educational camp includes topics such as biolumines-cence, Bermuda’s denizens of the deep, Bermuda fluo-rescence, giant and colossal squid and other interesting cephalopods, and deep-sea technology via Cable and Wireless/Global Marine.

A wide variety of activi-ties includes squid dis-section, bioluminescence experiments, constructing squid bean babies and the

utilization of interactive computer programmes and websites involving submers-ibles and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs).

Dabble in Prehistoric Seas: August 19 to 23.

This five-day educational camp ‘starts’ at the birth/creation of earth over 4½ billion years ago.

Travelling through simu-lated time, students get up close and personal with the variety of life in the savage prehistoric seas ranging

from the Cambrian to the Quaternary periods of the geological time scale.

Through videos, comput-ers, fossil labs, and other unique hands-on activities, students learn about the dominant inhabitants of each major period, what survived and what caused major extinctions, and where Bermuda fit into the scheme of the prehistoric seas.

Students will make moulds/casts of some of the “key” marine fossils of the past such as mosasaur teeth, ammonites, and tri-lobites, as well as excavate,

analyze and interpret real fossil remains, like palaeon-tologists.

Dabble in Frozen Seas – Global Warming/Global Extremes: July 1 to 5.

Discover the coldest, dri-est environment on earth, Antarctica, and how it com-pares to the North Pole, the Arctic.

This five-day educational camp immerses the students in cold icy waters, icebergs and ice floes of this extreme climate.

What causes the extreme conditions of both of these environments? What makes them the same or different

concerning marine life? How do the various

marine life adapt to the extreme cold? From pen-guins to polar bears, nar-whals to leopard seals, stu-dents will have fun learning about the amazing inhab-itants and their complex behaviours.

Historically, which men and expeditions explored and survived these extreme environments?

How did they survive, and overcome the many dangers?

What do we learn from their expeditions? What research is being conducted now? Could Bermuda ever get as extremely cold?

What are the consequenc-es for these environments with increased Global Warming, and their effect on the rest of the earth?

Students will study recent future predictions and find out what they can do to make a difference.

Dabble in Dissection: July 22 to 26. A five-day educa-tional camp introducing six very different unique inver-tebrate creatures: sponge, Hydra, segmented worm, clam, sea star, and crayfish. Students learn how special and well adapted these crea-tures are to their environ-ment and the important role they play in the ocean.

As they get “up close and personal” to each specimen they are taught safe and proper lab skills utilizing microscopes and dissecting tools.

An overview is given of each organism’s phyla inclusive of alerting the stu-dents of the related danger-ous or venomous members.

Due to the nature of this camp, students must be nine to 13 years old.

Dabble in Pirates: July 29 to 31. This three-day educa-tional hands-on camp dwells in the realm of piracy as it deals with the differ-ent types of pirates, the most famous ones, and the pirates that were involved with Bermuda’s early his-tory.

From the past days of the Spanish Main and the Barbary Coast to today’s pirate havens of the world, students have fun as

they are immersed in the pirate’s code of conduct, shipboard life, jolly rogers, gold doubloons, and pieces of eight. Among the many camp activities are “Divide the Booty” and “How Did the Pirate Ship Sink?” where students work with real artefacts and treasures as well as play an authentic pirate game of chance. The camp culminates with the students having an oppor-tunity to compete as they dress as their favourite “swashbuckler”.

Dabble in Sharks: August 12 to 16. “Sharks”, a word that will make you scram-ble out of the water when at the beach, is the focus of this camp which will cover everything one needs to know about sharks from a shark dissection, shark attack behaviour, sharks past and present, current shark research, to shark conservation.

It will entail an in-depth dissection, identifying vari-ous prehistoric shark teeth, painting large 3.5 inch cast, Carcharodon megalodon teeth, and constructing a take-home six-gilled shark “beanie” baby.

Dabble in Abyss/ Titanic: July 8 to 12. This five-day educational camp delves into the deep, dark, cold, highly pressurized, remote areas of the ocean of which only 5 per cent has been explored. Students experi-ment with the principles of deep water oceanogra-phy, discover state of the art methods of deepwater exploration, and observe recently discovered unusual, new abyssal life forms including ones found recently off Bermuda.

Unique communities are revealed involving extinct seamounts, cold seeps, hydrothermal vents, whale falls and newly explored areas such as the Celebes Seas.

Along with abyssal explo-ration come discoveries of the skeletons of lost ships and the secrets they left behind.

From mapping ocean bot-toms and locating wrecks,

building vent boxes, to deci-phering the last Morse code sent by the RMS Titanic, the mysteries surrounding sunken ships including the Marie Celeste, local ship-wreck the Caraquet and others are revealed.

Dabble in the Sargasso Sea: June 27-28. This two-day camp focuses on the amazing, special Sargasso Sea – “an ocean within an ocean” in which Bermuda is the only land mass. What marine life thrives in this sea? Why is it important to Bermuda? What are its floating islands? What conservation groups are uniting to protect it and why? Students will find the answers to these questions as they perform hands-on labs with a variety of speci-mens, beach drift and beach analysis.

NEW CAMP: Dabble In Sea Myths, Sea Serpents, and Superstitions: August 26 to 30. Delve into the interest-

ing world of ocean mythol-ogy, sea legends, sea mon-ster sightings and seamen’s superstitions. Ever since mankind began exploring the sea, fantastical tales were told. From mysterious sea serpent accounts, ghost ship discoveries, sinking of Atlantis and the calling of the Sirens, students explore the facts and fiction behind past legends and folklore. What was their basis? Using hands-on activities, educa-tional websites, accounts of survivors and videos, students become myth bust-ers as they enter the realm of Greek mythological gods and tales such as Jason and the Argonauts and Sinbad the Sailor and the seven seas.

Dabble In Whales: September 3 to 4. This edu-cational camp explores the world’s largest mammals and immerses campers into the whales’ relationship to

mankind and the present efforts to conserve them.

Hands-on and interactive, this camp involves track-ing satellite tagged whales, identifying the different types of whales and their behaviours, and learning the story of whaling in the past and present and in

Bermuda. From carving scrimshaw

to making sailor’s valen-tines, identifying whale sounds to being updated on the current whale stud-ies conducted in Bermuda, campers become whale afi-cionados.

Dabble In Disaster: July 15 to 19. Natural disasters can occur at any time, any-where.

This eye opening camp consists of marine related disasters involving geologi-cal forces such as volcanoes, earthquakes, underwater avalanches, meteor impacts, as well as meteorological events such as hurricanes, tornadoes/water spouts, global warming, and sea level rise.

Students learn various past natural disasters through videos, computers, meteorological and geologi-cal instruments as well as hands-on activities includ-ing those affecting Bermuda and how to predict, prepare and act where possible.

Camp hours are 9am till 3pm, after camp supervision until 5pm if required.
