Summer Worship Schedule
Outdoor Worship June 18th @ 9:00 am
Celebrate Father’s Day at Hope with worship
in the great outdoors! Bring your blanket if
you want to sit on the ground, or chairs will
be available for you. The Deacon’s will be
serving Root beer Floats after the worship
service in honor of our dads.
Grief Support Group on June 12th We all have to walk through some bewildering hard times in this life of constant change. Are you struggling with the pain of any kind of grief or loss? We don’t have to walk alone in our
grief. If you feel that sharing your experience with other sisters and brothers who are struggling would be helpful you are invited to attend a grief support group that will meet from 7:00 to 8:00 pm on the second Monday of each month. Pastor Steve will facilitate the group and give helpful resources and processes to work through the pain of loss.
Our summer worship schedule will remain the same (9:00am) along
with our coffee fellowship (8:30am). With the summer schedule,
Hope’s office hours will change a bit. We will remain open Monday
through Thursday from 9:00am - 4:00pm, but will be closed on
Fridays. There will be someone in the church office most Sunday
mornings from 8:30am - 10:30am. If you are in need of anything
outside of these hours, please leave a message at church (952) 492-
2099, or call Pastor Steve at (952) 210-6180.

From Pastor Steve. . . “LUMINOUS DARKNESS”
If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day
for darkness is as light to you. - Psalm 139:11-12
Jesus invites disciples to follow in his way. "Follow me" is different from "here is a map" the
following happens moment by moment. Jesus leads us through, not around the changes and chances of life.
There is a kind of full solar of religion that is about bright comfort and claiming the victory so that you can have your
best life now, as one prominent prosperity preacher puts it. What could be wrong with that? The power of positive
thinking sells!
Of course glory is all well and good until the inevitable darkness descends. The really big spiritual question then
becomes what do you do with your pain? God lets us fall and in that falling we experience our own absurdity and
vulnerability. Then what do we do in that painful darkness? We can either embrace and accept our need of saving help
to lead us step by step. We can follow Jesus THROUGH the pain learning its lessons – or… we can use any number of
numbing strategies or we can distract ourselves. A few drinks, a few fantasies, a shopping spree, an eating binge,
judging and holding others in contempt, obsessive worry, obsessive anything.… These are a few of the ways we avoid
following Jesus through our painful darkness.
Some wise teachers of the way of Christ have used the paradoxical term “luminous darkness” to describe the experience
of apparent abandonment that is the way of the cross. Luminous darkness is that place of exile where there are not
answers but there is Presence.
“There is the falling and the rising from the fall,” said Julian of Norwich, “and both are the mercy of God.”
Carl Young said that “Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darknesses of other people.”
I think it might also have been Carl Young who said ‘The places where we fall are the places where we can find pure
gold.”
The bible is unique in that it does not idealize the top as we all tend to do. It is the story of a God who is present
everywhere but only known and received at depth at the bottom. The God of the bible is the God of enslaved Semites,
the barren, and the excluded ones. (Look again at the core of Jesus’ teaching in Mathew 5 and 6) A fundamental theme
of the bible is that You meet God at the bottom. Stripped of power, prestige, and possessions we become open to grace.
That is just how it is.
Please consider and contemplate the poems. “The Guest House” and “Pillar of the Cloud” elsewhere in this month’s
newsletter.
May you have the courage to practice the presence of God in whatever darkness and pain you must face.
Pastor Steve

Men of Hope The men’s group meets on the first Saturday of each month at The Feedmill Restaurant for breakfast. Mark your calendar for June 3rd @ 7:30 am, and feel free to invite anyone you know who might be looking for a new church home or some good Christian guys to hang out with.
The Guest House This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī,
The Pillar of the Cloud LEAD, Kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom Lead Thou me on! The night is dark, and I am far from home— Lead Thou me on! Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see The distant scene—one step enough for me. I was not ever thus, nor pray'd that Thou Shouldst lead me on.
I loved to choose and see my path, but now Lead Thou me on! I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears, Pride ruled my will: remember not past years.
So long Thy power hath blest me, sure it still. Will lead me on, O'er moor and fen, o'er crag and tor-rent, till The night is gone; And with the morn those angel faces smile Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile. ~John Henry Newman

Thank you to all of the "Men of Hope" that provided the food, did the cooking, served the meal, or helped with the clean up for the Mother's Day Breakfast. It was very well attended. And from what we could tell, also well enjoyed. A very special "Thank You" to Curt Wicklund for again coordinating this whole event. The free will offering donations that went to Families Moving Forward amounted to $209. Thanks to everyone that attended the breakfast for your generosity. ~Denny Lindell
