From Pastor Steve. . . Sacramental Moments

I am a huge fan of the writings of Frederick Buchner. Whenever I feel a need to be

inspired or reoriented I know that spending some time in any of his books will direct

me back to the sense of wonder at the deep sacred mystery of life in which God is

ever present.

A theme that runs through Beuchner’s work is that God meets us in the ordinary stuff

of everyday life. Here are a few quotes to savor:

“Sacramental moments can occur at any moment, any place, and to anybody. Watching something get born.

Making love. A high-school graduation. Somebody coming to see you when you‘re sick. A meal with people

you love. Looking into a stranger’s eyes and finding out he’s not a stranger. If we weren’t blind as bats we

might see that life itself is sacramental.”

“Romantic love is blind to everything except what is lovable and lovely, but Christ's love sees us with terrible

clarity and sees us whole. Christ's love so wishes our joy that it is ruthless against everything in us that

diminishes our joy. The worst sentence Love can pass is that we behold the suffering which Love has endured

for our sake, and that is also our acquittal. The justice and mercy of the judge are ultimately one.”

“Being a good steward of your pain. . . . It involves being alive to your life. It involves taking the risk of being

open, of reaching out, of keeping in touch with the pain as well as the joy of what happens because at no time

more than at a painful time do we live out of the depths of who we are instead of out of the shallows.”

“Whenever you find tears in your eyes, especially unexpected tears, it is well to pay the closest attention. They

are not only telling you something about the secret of who you are but, more often than not, God is speaking to

you through them of the mystery of where you have come from and is summoning you to where, if your soul is

to be saved, you should go to next.”

“Happiness turns up more or less where you’d expect it to – a good marriage, a rewarding job, a pleasant

vacation. Joy, on the other hand, is as notoriously unpredictable as the one who bequeaths it”

“Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery it is. In the boredom and pain of it, no less than in the

excitement and gladness: touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it, because in the last

analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace.”

Amen, Pastor Buchner. Yes! Pay attention to your life today, dear friends. Be alert to the surprising presence

of the Holy One in the ordinary unfolding of today.

Pastor Steve

National Day of Prayer by Sarah Gavert

I was super discouraged and thinking we should cancel the National Day of Prayer Potluck and

Service because it didn't seem like too many people were interested. All that work for just a few of

us. I was really down about the whole thing, BUT in the back of my mind I kept hearing that little

voice saying "For where two or three gather together because they are mine, I will be right there

among them." (Matthew 18:20 from the Living Bible version). I was kind of sick of that little voice and

was vocal about it to those around me and I’m sure they were tired of listening to me too.

We didn’t cancel the service ~ thank You God for not

listening to me!! What an absolutely amazing service!

Those of us on the Prayer Team planned the service

and Pastor Steve did his magic and turned it into a

very meaningful service of prayer. God was very much

in the midst of us that evening and I am just so thankful

that I hear His voice and answer the call. And in case

you are wondering, yes, we will have a prayer service

again next year!
