Thomas Reed calls himself a thief. The 43-year-old Levering resident is actually a beekeeper who produces thousands of pounds of raw, Northern Michigan honey every year to be sold both locally and nationally. “Maybe thief is not the right word,” Reed said with a laugh. “It’s more like I acquire it.” Reed, owner of Bliss Bee Co., has been making the sweet treat since the mid-1990’s, and has honey bee hives from Walloon Lake to Mackinaw City and everywhere in between. “When I first started, I didn’t have a clue what I was getting into,” he recalled.

Th rough JuNE 26 - Bobby Kennedy: A Time It Was. It has been 40 years since photojournalist Bill Eppridge was as-signed by Life magazine the task of capturing, on film, images of Bobby Kennedy during his 1968 presidential campaign. There will be over forty of these photographs on display taken just days before and after the assassination. “Everything I saw and everything I heard, it’s still there inside my head, like a slow-motion movie,” photojournalist Bill Ep-pridge has said of that night—June 5, 1968, at the Ambassador Hotel in Los An-geles.” Join us for: Coffee at Ten with Bill Eppridge: Friday, June 27 at 10 a.m, eve-ning lecture with Bill Eppridge: Saturday, June 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Crooked Tree Arts Center, 461 East Mitchell Street in Pe-toskey.

Th rough AuguST 17 - Reflections of Superior. A rotating crew of artists -- Fritz Seegers, Ladislav Hanka, Cynthia Cote, Brent Spink, Mark Spink, Mary Brodbeck, and Phyllis Fredendall -- sailed the Alwihta, a replica of an historic wooden sailboat, around the circumference of Lake Superior from ice-out in June until the storms of October. Sailing in short hops, they chose anchorages based on visual interest rather than convenience. Their work reflects on the wilderness coastlines, history, and industrial aspects of the Lake. Reflections of Superior is a contemporary

mix of artwork that reflects post-modern sensibilities and spans the richness of traditional media as well as multimedia explorations of cutting-edge technology. The common denominator is the artists’ fascination for this unforgiving, yet exquisitely beautiful environment. This showcase is held at the Crooked Tree Arts Center located on 461 East Mitchell Street in Petoskey. For more information, contact The Crooked Tree Arts Center at (231) 347-4337 or visit www.crookedtree.org.

It was at the opening of The Beatles photography exhibit last spring at Crooked Tree Arts Center when

visual arts and education director Gail Hosner came up with the idea for another exhibit. Bill Eppridge, LIFE magazine photographer who shot the early Beatles pho-tos, began talking to Hosner about his time assigned to the Robert Ken-nedy campaign in the1960’s. “As we were standing there talking, I was thinking, ‘Geez, that would make a great exhibit.’ I asked him how many photos he had from the campaign, and he said all of them, so I asked if I could borrow them for another show,” Hosner said. With the support of an exhibit sponsor, the show was a go. Hosner has spent the past year with Eppridge and his wife Adrienne planning the show, “Bobby Kennedy: A Time It Was,” which runs through June 26 at

the Arts Center. Forty-two photographs are on dis-play, one for each year of Kennedy’s life, Hosner said. Some photos are from Kennedy’s pre-campaign in 1966 and many from his campaign in 1968, including some of the last photos taken of Kennedy before he

was shot on June 5 at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. It has been 40 years since the death of Robert Kennedy and for Bill Ep-pridge, it still feels like yesterday. “I can still see it in my mind,” Ep-pridge said in a phone interview. “It

just burns in your brain. I can sit down and close my eyes and re-create the whole thing in my head-it’s still very strong.” When Eppridge was offered the chance to be assigned to the Kennedy campaign first in 1966 and then later in 1968, he jumped at the chance. Photographing the senator on the campaign trail was a fun experience, Eppridge said. “I found him to be a delightful man. He was very personable and ex-traordinarily smart,” he said. “When it came to photographers shooting pictures of him, he did what I loved; he ignored us. Nothing was ever posed.” Eppridge noted that there was a sense of nervousness among other photographers, however, many of

whom had photographed his brother, John F. Kennedy’s campaign years earlier. “There was sometimes an ominous quality about the campaign,” he said. On the evening of June 5, Eppridge contacted his editor to check in. His editor noted that Kennedy would probably win the California primary and would almost certainly be the presidential nominee. Eppridge was instructed to “stick right to him all night,” which is exactly what he did. Shortly after Kennedy won the Cali-fornia primary, he headed downstairs in the hotel to make a speech. “He went through the kitchen and stopped to say hello to the kitchen staff, who were delighted to talk to him. After the speech, his bodyguard

told him where to exit, but he wanted to go back through the kitchen,” Ep-pridge said. “We would usually form a wedge around him with a camera man in front, two still cameramen on the right and left and the sound guys on the side, but it didn’t happen this time.” Eppridge said he remembered hearing eight shots fired and said he immediately knew what had hap-pened, and moved past the crowd to see Kennedy on the floor by the busboy. He began photographing the scene immediately. “The first photo was out of focus and the second one the busboy was looking to the side, but the third one he was looking up at the crowd with a look of horror on his face. After that, the whole place turned into bedlam,” he said. “I was there for 21 minutes and those 21 minutes are burned into my head forever.” Eppridge said he believes it was instinct that allowed him to keep photographing the events of that night. “When an event like that happens, there’s almost a curtain that falls between the eye and the brain,” Ep-pridge said. “You don’t even think about what you’re doing, because if you did, you’d go crazy when you realized what was happening.” Eppridge will visit the Arts Center on Friday, June 27. The exhibit will continue through June 26. For more information, www.crookedtree.org.

Fifteen miles outside of Harbor Springs, down a stretch of winding, tree-lined roadway,

sits Good Hart General Store. The small, red structure, tucked beneath the shade of the surrounding green-ery, stands as the village’s only surviv-ing business. The store’s immediate purpose is obvious. The shop, which sells groceries and distributes the mail, allows residents to gather necessi-ties without having to make the long journey into neighboring towns. The importance of it survival, on the other hand, is intertwined with something much less tangible: the village’s iden-tity. “If we go,” said Carolyn Sutherland, the store’s owner, standing in an of-fice added after the store’s opening in 1934, “the town would be gone. There would be no Good Hart.” The story of Sutherland’s shop mir-rors that of a number of the area’s gen-eral stores, which subsist most often in places where nothing else does, in small enclaves like Good Hart, Bliss, and Horton Bay. Sutherland’s senti-ment echoes that of the owners and customers of these businesses, who fear that their disappearance marks the loss of local character and the feeling of times gone by. “You come in here and you feel the history and the unique charm

of this place,” said Pam Peterson, an employee of Symons General Store in Petoskey, seated beside the register at the wooden countertop that extends throughout the store. “This is a cen-tral landmark and a central part of a lot of people’s lives.” Symons, housed in the oldest brick building in downtown Petoskey, first opened its doors over 50 years ago. The store specializes in high-quality imports and locally-grown products, and the employees credit its survival to personal, reliable service – a rarity, they say, in larger, nationally-based chains.

“You get education, and you get interaction with the staff, and you get the wonderful ambience,” said Peterson. “That’s just part of living in northern Michigan – the fact that we care about our neighbors.” Symons, located in the center of a town with a large seasonal residency, has a customer base that is a mixture of both visitors and locals, most of whom pick up a few specialty prod-ucts and continue their shopping at a larger grocer. Petoskey, being one of the larger cities in the area, is able to offer such an option, while some neighboring villages are not. Horton Bay, located between Peto-

skey and Charlevoix, is such an area. Horton Bay General Store is the town’s centerpiece, founded as a company store during the lumber boom. Much like Good Hart General Store, it is surrounded by trees and open land, acting as a convenience store for locals – only 36 of whom live in the area full time – and visitors passing through. Now in its 132nd year, it has seen a number of owners, the most recent of whom – Claudia and Chip Lorenger – aim, at the request of town residents, to return it to its original form. The couple, who took control the store seven years ago, have since replaced

the 1950s-style bar with a wooden substitute, and repainted the store white, as it has always been, seven times. The response, they say, has been positive. Today, the walls of the store are decorated with photographs and paintings of Ernest Hemingway, who spent much of his youth in the store and the surrounding area. Behind the sales area, which features both sou-venirs and groceries, is a restaurant offering an 1800s-style, three course service. Where fifteen-foot fluores-cent lamps once hung, installed by a previous owner, dim chandeliers cast soft light on the stores wooden shelves and tables. “We offer something totally differ-ent,” said Claudia, leaning comfort-ably on the bar, where she had been sitting with a customer, “nostalgia.” Bliss Store, a general store situated about an hour north of Horton Bay, in Bliss Township, makes an effort, much like Horton Bay General Store, to cater to everyone without sacrific-ing its local appeal. For the past 60 years, it has been under the control of a single family, passed from Theresa and Dan Reed to their daughter, Bar-bara Tracy, and her husband, Mike. When the Reeds took control decades ago, regular customers made one request: don’t change a thing. “We try to keep it as much a coun-try story as possible,” said Theresa. “There is a lot of stuff crammed into this little place.” “It’s a two way street,” she said. “You help the customer, the customer helps you.” Horton Bay General Store is open only from Memorial Day to Labor Day, while its counterparts – Symons, Bliss, and Good Hart – are open year-around, even as high gas prices and a flailing economy take blows at tourist season. These businesses, banking largely on loyalty, have gone mostly unaffected by the economic downturn, and fear of going out of businesses – something a number of local businesses have been unable to avoid – is almost non-existent. “Anytime a well-loved thing goes away, it leaves a huge gap,” said Pe-terson. “It’s absolutely not going to happen.” “The thing that amazes me is what this business and network of busi-nesses provides to the community,” she said. “It will be here 50 years from now.” This is due, in part, said Suther-land, to a recognition of the need for preservation, an understanding of the benefits of a historic, locally-based general store that extend beyond mere convenience. Locals, she says, wish for these businesses to remain intact, and they will make a conscious

told myself if I would give myself five years and if I didn’t like it, I wouldn’t do it anymore. Well, five years has come and gone and I’ve kind of gotten to admire the little critters.” Reed said he enjoys the freedom his job offers. “When I want to get lunch I’ll just pull over by a river and eat or if I need to be in the office, I can just drop the tailgate on my truck and get out the cell phone,” he said. “I work at my own pace. Some days that means I’m working 18 to 20 hours and other days I’m not doing a whole lot.” The beekeeping business is not free of frustration, however, Reed said. “There are depressing times. People come in and drive over hives with their four-wheelers or kids will push over hives because they think it’s cool. When you have about $300 invested into one hive and you have a field of 25 hives, that’s about $7,500 in just one field, which is quite a bit,” he said. Reed said one of the major prob-lems he deals with is pesticides being sprayed close to his hives, which can be toxic to the bees. “Sometimes you’ll get people spray-ing Raid on the hives to intentionally kill them off, and then you get people who are spraying their plants a couple of miles away, which is a problem, too, because bees travel between one and a half to two miles to gather nectar for the hives,” he said. “If they gather nectar that has pesticides all over it, that can wipe out a whole hive.” Reed said people need to be made aware of the impact they have on in-sects like bees. He urges anyone using pesticide spays to carefully read and follow directions on the package. “You just need to follow these direc-tions to a tee,” he said. “Most of these sprays are honey bee friendly. Even though the chemicals themselves will kill the bees, if you use them at the proper time, which is in the evening, it shouldn’t harm them.”

There are three kinds of beekeepers, Reed said, those who produce bees, those who pollinate crops, and those who produce honey, which is what he does. Reed specifically uses Italian honey bees for producing his crop, as they are a gentle bee and easy to work with, he said. The type of honey produced is what Reed referrers to as “white” honey, which has a mild, floral flavor. Reed’s honey is also called “raw” honey, which means it is has not been processed though pasteurization. The honey is taken directly out of the comb and put in a tank to settle out. When the honey has settled, it is put in jars ready to be sold. Raw honey is not heated, which helps make the product creamier. “When heat is added to honey, the sugar will eventually crystallize, which creates a grainier honey,” Reed said. Because his honey is not heated, it has a thicker viscosity and does not look much like the clear, golden, processed honey seen in stores. “Most people look at my honey

and assume it’s lard,” Reed said with a chuckle. “You have to watch out for the stuff you buy in the store. Much of it is bought overseas and many times corn syrup is added to it to cut down on costs. This is what is referred to as ‘packers blend’ honey. It is not pure honey, but it doesn’t say that on the label.” The honey Reed makes also has more health benefits than the store bought variety. When honey is heated, the chemical structure of it is changed, Reed said. After being heated, it is no longer a food source, as it is when it is raw, but considered a sweetener. Pasteurizing the product also pulls out any pollen in the honey which has health benefits like miner-als and antibodies. “It’s got a lot of nutrients in it,” Reed said. “When you eat this, you’re not just eating a sugary treat.” The taste of the honey partly de-pends on the floral source it comes from, Reed said. “If the bees are pollinating orange blossoms, you’re going to have honey that has an orange flavor.” Goldenrod, milkweed, and bass-

wood are some of his bees’ floral sources. One main source for nectar for his honey, star thistle, is in danger of dy-ing off. According to Reed, the state of Michigan has released a parasite that will eradicate star thistle, which poses a threat to livestock that choke on the plant. “It’s a huge crop in Michigan and having them wipe it out will have a major effect on state beekeepers,” Reed said. With an average of 25 hives per field, and roughly 80,000 bees to a hive, Reed ends up producing around 25 tons of honey every year. The har-vest depends on a variety of factors. One determining factor of how much honey is produced is weather, Reed said. Warm summer days with the temperatures rang-ing between 70 to 80 degrees, along with rainy nights makes for optimal honey producing conditions. With last summer’s drought, the amount of honey produced was lower. Even though the flowers were still bloom-ing, they were not producing nectar, the main ingredient to make honey, Reed said. “I did better than a lot of beekeep-ers did, but not as well as I normally do,” he said. “Overall I’d say my production was down about 40 to 50 percent.”
