Mission Moments

For Healthy Living

Meet Randi Moore

Randi Moore and her husband Todd have been proud parents of five children over the last 15 years. Eight years ago their 2-year-old daughter Cailee drowned in a tragic accident. Randi was devastated and suffered from severe depression over the next several years. She was on medication and slept most of the time. Her physician finally told her that she needed to lose weight and change her eating habits. Todd bought a family membership to the Sumter Family YMCA.

“For the first time in 15 years I would be exercising and learning to eat healthy. I quickly signed up for YFIT Camp taught by Missy Corrigan. She taught me about nutrition, learning to fuel my body instead of overfeed or starve it. She also gave me specific workouts that would help strengthen my entire body. The best part of it was that my children were able to be with me at the gym. Our YMCA has several exercise classes for small children. I soon attended Zumba classes and was addicted. That inspired me to become a Zumba instructor and start a Zumba class for children. I also became licensed in Aqua Zumba and Zumba Gold. Later I became certified as an AFAA group exercise instructor. My students inspire me, starting from the little four-year-old kids who laugh and giggle with me all the way to the 99-year-old woman, Mrs. Beulah, who does Zumba with me once a week. I even have a 60-year-old student who is blind. When she isn’t working out with me, she walks up and down the hallways, hanging onto the rails. She has lost over 100 pounds. Within one month of following the YFIT Camp program, I was off all of my medicine and haven’t had to go back on any since. When I started my journey one year ago I was 151 pounds and 42% body fat. That was a lot for my 5-foot frame. However, losing the weight was easier when I focused on getting to the source of the problem, the body fat. Now I’m 110 pounds and 16% body fat. I eat six healthy meals a day and have joined Team YFIT at our YMCA. I exchanged my tears for sweat!”

For Youth Development

Meet First Presbyterian Basketball Team.

This 9 and10-year-old team includes a young boy who is autistic. The coaches and team gladly accepted Ki to be on their team. While Ki had some challenges throughout the season, he kept working and participating with the team. Finally, during a game, Ki finally made a basket. Teammate Judson Holmes ran and picked Ki up in congratulations. The rest of the team gave him high-fives and celebrated this young boy’s accomplishment. Coaches Will Holmes and Matt Stutz both agreed that this was the best day coaching that they had ever experienced. This victory was certainly sweeter than winning any game.

For Social Responsibility

We have enjoyed our partnership with Hope Street Ministries. Last February, several staff, family and friends attended Souper Saturday during the Super Bowl weekend. We distributed coats donated by Y members, and provided warm soup and corn bread. The Y also collected non-perishable food items during the month of November and held another coat drive beginning in December. It has been an incredible opportunity to partner with Hope Street and to serve the less fortunate in our community.

In December, the Y hosted its first “Giving Back” Christmas meal. Senior staff and board members served a holiday meal to our Open Doors scholarship recipients and part-time staff. Participants also enjoyed Christmas music and games during the event. The meal was made possible, in part, by a grant from the Caterpillar Foundation.
