WATER bills are set to increase on average by6.2 per cent a year for the next five years inSunbury and the Macedon Ranges underWestern Water’s water plan.

Despite the increase, residents in the West-ern Water catchment area, which includes Sun-bury, the Macedon Ranges and Moorabool,look set to be spared paying extra for the con-troversial Wonthaggi desalination plant.

Western Water managing director NeilBrennan last week spoke to residents about theplan at an Essential Services Commission pub-lic meeting in Sunbury.

He said that after consultation with custom-ers, the authority had decided to spread theincreases in charges over five years, instead ofall in the first year of the plan.

As reported in the Weekly on June 12,customers were given two options about howthey would prefer to be billed for increasedcharges.

The other option was for bills to increase by19 per cent in the first year.

Under that option, the average bill (withoutconcession), which customers get three times ayear, would increase by about $67.

‘‘The feedback we got was very much aboutunderstanding our demographics of the busi-ness, that we have [a lot of] young families[battling the] cost of living and mortgagepressures,’’ Mr Brennan said.

‘‘[There was] also concern about pensionersand others in the area who get a concession.’’

The average yearly water bill is expected toincrease from $942.04 in 2012-13 to$1275.37 in 2017-18.

Mr Brennan said capital investment and taxincreases were the main reason for theincrease.

Planned projects include a $33 millionupgrade to the recycling plant in Sunbury andstormwater infrastructure at Toolern.

‘‘Growth is our major driver at the moment,particularly with infrastructure investmentgrowth.

‘‘Timely investment for us is fundamental.

We really need to make sure of investing whenwe need to invest. The initial plan that wentout for public consultation was $325 million[to be spent on infrastructure].

‘‘That has come down to $250 million,which is a result of the softening of thegrowth.’’

Mr Brennan said Western Water would forthe first time be paying tax under the nationaltax equivalent regime.

‘‘We’ve had tax losses for a number of yearsthat have now been absorbed and within thisplan it’s driven by growth and customer contri-butions and gifted assets we are given.

‘‘We have to start paying tax on those.

‘‘It’s estimated in the five-year plan [the taxcontribution will] be around the $35 millionmark.’’

Mr Brennan said that despite accessing Mel-bourne water, customers wouldn’t be payingfor the desalination plant, saying the companywould absorb the cost instead.

That’s estimated to save customers a further10 per cent increase on their bills.

‘‘With the breaking of the drought we willbe moving back to utilising our local waterresources and less on the Melbourne watersystem,’’ Mr Brennan said.

He said the Sunbury-based company wouldalso cap staff levels.

TROUBLE is already brewing on thenew Hume Council, with twocouncillors at war.

Cr Jack Medcraft last weekconfirmed to the Weekly he had filed acomplaint with the council over anumber of ‘sexist’ Facebook andTwitter comments by fellow JacksonCreek councillor Ann Potter.

He has also lodged a complaint withthe Equal Opportunity Commission.

‘‘She keeps posting about maleshating her in Sunbury and I’ve had a

number of guys call me saying it’s anattack on men to group them alltogether,’’ Cr Medcraft said.

‘‘I’m sick of this gender businessesand it’s not doing anyone any good.’’

Cr Medcraft was expected to meetwith the council’s chief executiveDomenic Isola yesterday morning todiscuss the matter.

The Weekly had already gone toprint before the meeting took place.

On Cr Potter’s Twitter account, shestates that she’s ‘‘hated by local males(and) happy to live with that’’.

Cr Potter later told the Weekly she

was unaware of any complaints whichhad been made against her.

Hume Council said it would notcomment on the matter.

The Equal Opportunity Commis-sion also said it couldn’t commenton any matter that may be beforethem.

The two councillors are serving oncouncil together for the first time buthave a history of grievances.

In 2006, Cr Medcraft took legalaction against Cr Potter overcomments made on a website but lostthe case.

Water tower replacedA new fire truck water tower has been

installed at the Redesdale Reserve. The

tower replaces an ageing tower that

was built by CFA volunteers after the

1967 fires. The tower was updated but

the cost of maintaining it could no

longer not be met by the Redesdale fire

brigade. The $15,000 tower was

constructed through a partnership

between the Department of Sustaina-

bility, City of Greater Bendigo, CFA and

the Redesdale Reserve Committee.

ROCK superstar Bruce Springsteen is set to drawhuge crowds at Hanging Rock at Easter.

Frontier Touring and Jacobsen Internationalconfirmed last week that Springsteen and theE Street Band will perform one concert at the Rockon Saturday, March 30.

It will be one of two shows in Victoria as part oftheir Wrecking Ball tour.

Following the success of Leonard Cohen and RodStewart concerts, this will be the third concert of itskind to be hosted by Frontier Touring with MacedonRanges Council at the outdoor venue.

Macedon Ranges mayor Roger Jukes said thecouncil was excited to welcome the star.

‘‘The previous two concerts that the councilsupported at Hanging Rock were a huge success.They offer a unique outdoor concert experience toboth visitors and local residents.

‘‘There’s something magical and atmospheric abutHanging Rock that makes it ideal for a live musicevent. The Rock is a dramatic backdrop to theperformance, and the open air, stars and night skyadd to the atmosphere.’’

Cr Jukes said the Macedon Ranges benefited

enormously through visitors who stayed overnightand took advantage of shops, restaurants and cafes.

Studies following the Stewart concert in Februaryindicated the concert attracted $1.3 million to theregion’s economy. Accommodation in the shire wassold out.

Last week, the Weekly outlined the council’s planto spend $4.13 million in developments for HangingRock to further cash in on its appeal by making iteasier to hold big concerts, markets and othertourism-based events.

Council’ recreation and cultural developmentmanager Rod Clough said putting on concerts was asignificant challenge with no power, water or phoneconnections.

The concerts are held in the east paddock at Hang-ing Rock.

OUTDOOR dining areas of cafes and restaur-ants in the Macedon Ranges could becomesmoke-free.

Last week the council sent letters to busi-nesses with alfresco dining areas operating oncouncil land, inviting them to sign up tobecome smoke-free areas.

Traders who take part will receive signs,table cards, stickers and will be promotedthrough council and tourism websites, socialmedia and visitor information centres.

Mayor Roger Jukes said there was strongsupport from the public for smoke-free out-door dining and he encouraged businesses toshow leadership.

‘‘Eighty-one per cent of people who

participated in our consultation earlier thisyear said they wanted alfresco dining areas inthe Macedon Ranges to be smoke-free.’’

More than 280 people completed the surveyabout smoke-free areas in the shire.

‘‘I’d like to see the majority of businesses inthe shire step up and participate in this pro-gram,’’ Cr Jukes said.

In July, the Macedon Ranges became thefirst rural council in the state to have smoke-free parks, reserves and sports grounds. It isthe second council besides Baw Baw to set up asmoke-free alfresco dining program.

Heart Foundation chief executive KathyBell said there were health benefits to the cre-ation of smoke-free areas.

‘‘Smoke-free environments denormalisesmoking, so children are less likely to seesmoking, less likely to start smoking andtherefore less likely to suffer from the negativeeffects of tobacco use.’’

Show’s a firstPaintings by Rupert Gray, pictured, will grace the

AUTHORITIES are predicting a moredangerous fire season than first anti-cipated across Hume, with residentsbeing warned to take the necessarysteps now to reduce their risk.

The call came as the fire dangerperiod came into force across theregion last week, banning the lightingof fires in the open air without apermit in areas controlled by the CFAuntil April 30 next year.

CFA Hume group officer GerryHauke said several areas across theregion were under threat.

‘‘The most dangerous aspect for usis grass fires around Craigieburn,Wildwood, Sunbury and the areaswith surrounding vacant land,’’ hesaid.

‘‘People should cut the grass aroundtheir houses, get rid of any vegetationand clear roofs to be prepared for theseason.

‘‘Grass fires can impact on homes,too, so it’s important to make sure thathomes are prepared for summer.’’

Mr Hauke said people surroundedby vacant land or paddocks shouldcreate fire breaks at the edge of theirproperties.

He urged residents to take notice ofthe restrictions which apply during thefire danger period.

‘‘The idea behind the period is thatthe land is very dry and people have tobe careful about lighting fires.

‘‘You need to get a permit throughthe council if you light a fire and haveto make sure there is equipment to putit out. You don’t leave it unattended.

‘‘You notify the CFA when you areplanning to have the fire.’’

CFA northern and westernmetropolitan region community safetymanager David Allen said that whileVictoria had experienced a significantamount of wet weather this year, itwas one of the world’s most fire-proneregions. ‘‘It only takes two weeks ofhot, dry and windy weather to createdangerous fire conditions,’’ he said.

CYCLING enthusiasts in Hume are beingurged to have their say on a study to helpshape the future of the city’s cycling tracks andservices.

The development of a new criterium circuitis among the off-road options being con-sidered as part of Hume Council’s cyclingfacility feasibility study.

Avid Craigieburn cyclist Kevin Balaam saysa criterium circuit — which could also be usedfor training, racing and learn-to-rideprograms — would be an important additionto Hume’s cycling options.

‘‘I read in its budget that the council wasfunding an investigation into a criteriumcircuit in Craigieburn, [but] I personally thinka circuit located at or near Melbourne Airportwould be more feasible,’’ Mr Balaam said.

‘‘That ease of accessibility from all direc-tions would no doubt improve the feasibilityof the circuit. It could perhaps also be used byEssendon footballers as well as Paralympianswho are sharing the new Essendon FootballClub community facility.’’

While criterium cycling would be thefocus of the study, the council also wants

to determine the region’s other cycling needs.Hume mayor Geoff Porter says community

feedback is critical.‘‘Hume is a popular for cycling with many

cyclists using local roads and trails forrecreational and competition purposes.

‘‘We are well positioned as a growth area toconsider developing an off-road cycling

facility which would provide more opportun-ities for cyclists from across Melbourne’snorth to come to Hume,’’ Cr Porter said.

Submissions on the council’s feasibilitystudy close on December 19.

Today’s youth might be the leaders of tomorrow, but they’re all so bloodyimpatient. It’s a common assessment of Generation Y, and one that appears spoton to BEN CAMERON, who met a young trio in touch with their community side.

Nadine Kotop, Sam Hasell andAleisha King are all certifiedleaders, and patience doesn’t

appear to be a virtue. They’re notwaiting until tomorrow to start effect-ing change.

Aleisha, 17, admits she’s had tolearn how to cool her jets since she wasfive years old.

With a clear goal of joining St JohnAmbulance, she had to wait until shewas a more mature seven to sign on.

‘‘I was really tiny. I couldn’t domuch,’’ says Aleisha, who also joinedthe Salvation Army about the sametime.

These days she’s passing down herfirst aid know-how to kids.

‘‘It’s really rewarding,’’ she says ofworking with kids. ‘‘You really feelgood that you’re helping somebody.

‘‘Not everything’s about you — eventhough a lot of people think it is.’’

Aleisha prides herself on her dedica-tion, even if it means missing import-ant events such as a close friend’sbirthday.

One of her mates is still a bitannoyed after Aleisha missed her partyto fulfil her ambo duties.

‘‘I’d put my name down. It wassomething I said I would do. I wasn’tgoing to pull out. I’d already commit-ted to it, so I fulfilled my commitment.You have to put your money whereyour mouth is.’’

Aleisha believes there’s a ‘‘massivegeneralisation’’ that Generation Y is aselfish lot, although she admits ‘‘thereare a heap of people in this generationwho don’t give a crap about somebodyelse’’.

‘‘There are a few good ones outthere. None of my friends help withother people, really, but each to theirown, I guess.’’

A little less patient is Nadine Kotop,who says she’s always been in amassive hurry to help.

‘‘We are the future, essentially, so Ithink it’s quite important for us tostart now,’’ says Kotop, Hume’s youngcitizen of the year.

The 20-year-old is the type who’smore impressed by survivors thancelebrities and — while sports starssuch as Chris Judd don’t subscribe tothe theory that public leaders set thestandard for others — she embracesthe expectations that came with win-ning the award.

‘‘I wouldn’t call it pressure. It wasmore of a boost and encouragement to

keep going on,’’ she says of the expect-ations she faces.

‘‘If anything, it was small motiva-tion . . . it was encouraging and mademe want to continue with this pathand make a difference.’’

While a lot of her peers are spendingtheir spare time on social media andparties, Nadine, a final-year universitystudent who also works at RonaldMcDonald House, says the key toeffecting change at such a young age issometimes about being selfless.

‘‘It’s about balance, to be honest. It’sjust about spending less time on Face-book and putting it towards some-thing else. It’s not too difficult.

‘‘You compromise a little bit. Youcan’t attend every social event you’dlike to, or you neglect a little bit ofstudy if you want to organise an event.It’s about prioritising.’’

Like Aleisha, Nadine has had toforgo her share of fun, like a recenttrip to Europe, which put the acid teston her commitment.

‘‘I haven’t been earning money asI’ve been utilising that time for volun-teer work.

‘‘It’s easy to get consumed by otherthings, like my peers, but it’s aboutlooking at the big picture — you’renever too young to make a differenceand make worthy contributions. Justbecause you’re young doesn’t meanyou can’t have a voice in the com-munity and make an effective change.’’

Change is sometimes as simple asaltering perceptions, and you couldargue Sam Hasell is living proof of thatidea.

He’s an opinionated 16-year-oldskater, but also a non-drinking poetwith plenty of community spirit.

Sam’s also about construction anddestruction in equal measure, dedicat-ing his time to pulling apartmisconceptions around local youthsthrough his pet project: repairingKyneton’s skate park.

‘‘I had the idea about breaking thestereotype of young people as drink-ing, violent youth,’’ he says.

‘‘We want to show the people ofKyneton that the kids aren’t that badand that the stereotype that they’vegot of the youth is wrong.’’

While many of his contemporariesdrink to excess, Sam finds expressionthrough the written word. So he usedthe poetic form to make a pitch to thelocal council for $1000 to repair thepark. ‘‘The stereotype is my big thing,’’

he says. ‘‘I’m a 16-year-old kid. Peopledon’t expect me to be involved inpoetry.

‘‘But when I get up and recite some-thing I’ve written, people are trulyblown away. I really like breaking thatperception.’’

Sam has become something of a gunfor hire for the council, helpingdevelop a program to improve themental health of year 8 students in theMacedon Ranges.

As local youth suicides rates havedropped, Sam has reluctantly inher-ited the tag of a role model.

‘‘I identify with being a role model.But I haven’t tried to change myself orbecome something that I’m not.

‘‘I should just be myself.’’It illustrates why helping others is

not a choice for these youngsters: it’sin their DNA.

‘‘I think I’ve always liked to helppeople out,’’ Nadine says.

‘‘I’ve always been into helping thevulnerable. It’s been instilled in mefrom a young age to help people.

‘‘I’m definitely not perfect,’’ shejokes. ‘‘I should probably help aroundthe house a little more. I definitelydon’t do many chores or anything likethat.’’

It’s a good reminder they haven’tgrown up too fast.

THE Old Bakery Walk in Sunbury will be asafer place after the Hume Council receivedfunding for a lighting system.

Last week the state governmentannounced the council would get $6000from the Community Safety Fund grants tolight the walkway.

The fund provides grants of up to$10,000 for community groups,organisations and local government toimplement locally based crime preventionprojects.

Sunbury Business vice-president BenCollier welcomed the funding decision, say-ing it would help to make Sunbury streetssafer.

‘‘It’s one of those areas around the night-clubs that is an area of activity late at night.

‘‘It’s a good thing to improve safety for thearea and we welcome the council for beingproactive.’’

Mr Collier said a number of shops in the

area had been vandalised and he hoped thelighting and the addition of CCTV cameraswould help deter this.

He said that in meetings with the council,lanes including Old Bakery Walk hadbeen mentioned as a possible CCTV loca-tions.

‘‘With lights and cameras it will makevandalism more difficult and they wouldn’tbe able to hide things as easily.

‘‘It’s about the safety of the whole com-munity.’’

Hume mayor Geoff Porter said: “Thefunding will go towards installing lightingsystems in the identified laneways in theSunbury Town Centre, which will comple-ment the CCTV system to be installed nextyear.

“We’re hopeful that better lighting in thearea will help decrease anti-social behavioursuch as graffiti and vandalism and will makethe areas safer to walk in at night, giving thecommunity more options to get aroundSunbury.”

Yuletide funA crowd of about 3500 is expected to join in Christmas festivities this Friday in Gisborne. The town’s Christmas

festival includes a street parade, pony and carnival rides, highland dancers, Tubby the Robot, floats and bands.

Activities for children and live music begins from 4.30pm. A street parade will begin at 6.30pm at Fisher Street and

will travel along Aitken (service road) and Hamilton streets, finishing at Gardiner Reserve. Road closures will be in

place from 6pm. Festival secretary Glenys Quaife, pictured with Sharon Black and Carmel Clemson, said an

impressive display of fireworks at 9.30pm would end the night. ‘‘The festival is really a community get-together,

every local comes out to celebrate Christmas,’’ she said. ‘‘It really is a lot of fun. All we hope for is a nice night.’’

Church joins inseason of givingBY TARA MURRAY

SUNBURY residents continue to seekhelp to pay bills, with one local charitygiving away $2000 in the last month.

The Sunbury Baptist Church hasbeen giving money to residents sinceAugust last year and has seen a rise inthe number of people needing help inthe lead-up to Christmas.

‘‘We have given out over $12,500since we started and normally givearound $600-$800 a month,’’ PastorJames Natsis said.

‘‘In the last month we have givenaway $2000 for rent, utilities (gas,electricity) and car-related issues.

‘‘People have their rego due andwant to buy Christmas presents, sothis is helping people to be able toafford both of them.

‘‘They are coming in for practicalneeds and we look at how we can helpthem.’’

The church has given away $5500since the start of June.

Mr Natsis said it wasn’t just peoplefrom the church who were receivingand giving money.

‘‘What we are helping people with isthe necessities.

‘‘We have people referred to us andmore people are getting wind of it.

‘‘One of the local schools has eventold people to come and see us.’’

He said the church would also holda lunch on Christmas Day.

‘‘It’s not just for the poor, it’s foranyone who doesn’t want to be aloneon Christmas Day.

Mr Natsis said the church was alsoconsidering holding a car boot sale inFebruary.

‘‘We have already helped a numberof people but are looking at otherways to help them further.’’

AN artistic flight of fancy by aSunbury group takes Chinese dragonsleaping and dancing down Parisianthoroughfares.

Support service Distinctive Optionscombines the contrasting themes forits art show Dragons in Paris. Theshow opened last Monday as part ofHume Council’s activities for Interna-tional Day of People with a Disability,which was marked on December 3.

Distinctive Options provides ser-vices to people with disabilities in Mel-bourne’s north-west and surroundingurban and rural communities.

Executive manager Rick Dunn saidthat when the service’s clients sought atheme for this year’s show, they con-sidered the activities they undertookover the year. ‘‘We were looking atChinese cultures and dragons and thenwe looked at French culture.

‘‘When it came to deciding on theshow, the clients thought about usingthe two.’’

The exhibition features work from80 clients, and artworks can bebought.

‘‘There are different types of work

on display, including oil paintings andsculptures,’’ Mr Dunn said.

‘‘We usually sell about 90 per centof the works and it’s a big thrill forthose who’ve done the work because

The latest police data shows thatresidential burglaries in the Mace-don Ranges are continuing to rise.Burglaries jumped from 136 to 165incidents in the year to September.

The figures, released last month,also show that theft of vehicles isincreasing, from 63 to 83 in thesame period.

Macedon Ranges PoliceInspector Ryan Irwin said theupward trend of residential burglar-ies, stolen vehicles and propertystolen from cars in the shire wasoccurring in rural and semi-ruralareas.

He said motorcycles, farm equip-ment and power tools continue tobe popular with thieves.

‘‘Residents are reminded torecord the make, model and serial

numbers of all tools and motor-cycles and take photographs of allvaluables.’’

Reporting suspicious behaviourto police or Crime Stoppers wascritical to help police solve crimes.

A police information kit can helpresidents improve home security.

Residents who are going away

can use an ‘absence from homeregister’ at all police stations torecord the times and dates they willbe away so police can check the areaduring routine patrols.

Safer communities InspectorTony Langdon said a house thatlooked unattended was an easytarget for burglars.

‘‘Small steps such as leaving lightson timers, some old clothes on theline and closing curtains will help todeter burglars.

‘‘We also suggest arranging forsomeone to collect the mail and takeout the bins in your absence, and ifyou are going to be away for alonger period of time, we wouldrecommend arranging for a house-sitter.’’

With the summer and festive sea-son traditionally involving moresocial functions, Inspector Irwin isasking residents to be safe.

‘‘Many people will be attendingwork functions, family get-togethers and other types of socialevents where alcohol will beconsumed.

‘‘While most people consumealcohol responsibly during thisperiod, it’s also recognised as ahigh-risk time for increases inassaults, family violence incidentsand road trauma.’’

Violent crime onrise in HumeCRIME in Hume continues to climb, the latestpolice data shows.

Total crime — including assault, robbery, res-idential burglary and ‘crimes against people andproperty’ — jumped 14.5 per cent in the year toSeptember.

Drug offences continued to snowball with ajump of 31.7 per cent, from 543 offences to 715in the year to September.

In the same period, theft of cars and theftfrom cars in Hume dropped.

Hume Inspector Paul Allinson said crime,road safety and public order were focus areas forHume police. ‘‘Protective services officers willsoon be at railways stations in Hume until thelast train daily to prevent anti-social behaviourand provide the community with a safe environ-ment.’’

‘Crimes against people’ rose 22.2 per cent —from 1988 offences to 2429 in the year toSeptember.

Inspector Allinson said victims were increas-ingly confident to report violence to police.

He said a family violence unit, staffed bypolice at Broadmeadows, would work withrepeat victims of assault and repeat offenders ina bid to break the cycle of abuse.

Calder traffic snarlthe price of safetyBY HELEN GRIMAUX

THE commuter crawl past Calder Park racewaywill continue well into the new year with worksto make safer traffic crossovers at Organ PipesRoad scheduled for the next four months.

Global Contracting has been awarded a$433,000 contract for the safety upgrades, whichstart this month.

The works will block south-bound traffic fromaccessing Calder Park Drive, the site of numerousrecent crashes as motorists run the gauntlet ofoutgoing city traffic at the end of an 80km/hsection.

In the five years to the end of June this yearthere were 10 casualty crashes at this location,five of which resulted in serious injuries.

Western Metropolitan Region MP Bernie Finnsaid only outbound freeway traffic would be ableto turn into Calder Park Drive.

“Traffic travelling towards Melbourne can stillaccess Calder Park Drive via the Kings Roadinterchange,” Mr Finn said.

He said VicRoads would continue to allow

U-turns at Organ Pipes Road and would build anacceleration lane so vehicles can turn safelybefore heading towards Melbourne.

The latest works are part of a $1.28 millionproject to make the freeway safer on its approachto the metropolis.

“This includes the addition of a third laneinbound between Green Gully Road and theM80 Ring Road, run-off-road treatmentsbetween Calder Park Drive and Bulla-DiggersRest Road, and street lighting at the intersectionof the Calder Freeway and Calder Park Drive,’’Mr Finn said.

The government has also made a submission toInfrastructure Australia for a full overpassinterchange at the raceway intersection, forwhich the Calder Action Group has lobbied forover many years.

A spokesman for the federal Departmentof Infrastructure and Transport said detailedassessments of projects submitted by the stategovernment were under consideration. ‘‘Oncecompleted, this advice will help the federalgovernment make future investment decisions.’’

With all due respect to the above, the main driver ofthe Sunbury Electrification Project was to relievethe acute overcrowding on the Sydenham line.The completion of this project has resulted in peaktrains now running at six-minute intervals betweenthe city and Watergardens. A further benefit is asubstantial increase in the number of services toDiggers Rest and Sunbury, although off-peak the

increase is limited. To suggest that Sunburycommuters are bogans is a pretentious/elitistcomment that is both offensive and narrow-mindedas most are city workers travelling to and fromwork. It should also be noted that most were happywith the train service pre-electrification and neitherwanted nor supported the electrification.

Most wine drinkers will have a moment that makes an indelible imprint; when everything just clicks and the memory of

the wine stays with them forever.For Kevin McCarthy and wife Kathleen

Quealy, it was a bottle of Alsatian pinot gris bought from the old Richmond Hill Cellars in the mid-’80s. The wine was not only memorable for the two young Mornington Peninsula winemakers – it was life changing. “As we fi rst tasted a bottle of Alsace pinot gris we nearly fell off our chairs,” says McCarthy, whose pinot gris and pinot grigio have long set the standard for the variety in Australia.

Before the bottle had been emptied, McCarthy and Quealy were set on producing their own, but there were a few hurdles to jump before they made their fi rst pinot gris in 1992. “It was a step into the unknown, planting that pinot gris. Our resources back then amounted to a credit card – we were the classic two young kids with an idea,” McCarthy says. “When we decided to put it in, there were no nurseries that had it (for immediate purchase), so we had to go to Wagga Wagga to a

vineyard that had it planted to take cuttings.”The pair then had to convince the Mornington

Peninsula establishment. They wanted to plant the “wrong” type of pinot – the peninsula was pinot noir territory back then.

Success built quickly at McCarthy’s and Quealy’s T’Gallant winery (it’s now owned by Treasury Wine Estates and McCarthy still makes the wines), and after their third harvest the wines were quickly developing a following.

Today, more than 50 wineries on the Mornington Peninsula produce a pinot gris or

pinot grigio and 140 hectares are shaded by pinot gris vines.

The clay soils help to give the wines a richness, and a long ripening period – due to the region’s maritime climate of warm days and cool nights – means they generally have good fl avour development and good acidity. Peninsula pinot gris ages well. With time, the wine loses its fruit characteristics, develops savoury and spice characters and becomes more textural. ■

Gris or grigio?The same slightly pink, waxy-skinned grape produces pinot gris and pinot grigio. Traditionally,

the grape is picked early in north-eastern Italy to produce crisp grigio, while in France’s Alsace

region they pick their grapes later and riper to produce the more textural gris. However, there’s

a huge swing between crisp and textural and a lot of grey areas in between. “The market is

confused. There’s no way you can categorise gris/grigio as a style, nothing hard and fast, so we

had to create a new language,” says Kevin McCarthy, who has been working with scientists at

the Australian Wine Research Institute to develop the Pinot G scale. This categorises wines on

a 10-point scale from crisp to luscious and is starting to appear on more back labels. “The idea

with the Pinot G scale is to empower the consumer so they don’t have to guess.”

Perks is fairly formulaic teen fare, writes Myke Bartlett

Charlie (Logan Lerman) is asocially awkward teen, recover-ing from his best friend’s suicide.

Like every other teenager, he’sconvinced nobody understands him sohe’s astonished to find camaraderiewith a bunch of precocious outcasts,including proto-hipster Sam (EmmaWatson) and her gay stepbrotherPatrick (Ezra Miller).

Set in 1991 — which isn’timmediately spelt out, leaving theaudience to wonder how these teenshave heard of a “mixtape” — Perks isfairly formulaic teen fare. It only tripsup when striving to be different.

We know Sam is edgy because shelistens to The Smiths and loves TheRocky Horror Picture Show (that’swhat “deep” teens are always into,after all). And yet we’re supposed to

believe neither she nor any of her ganghas ever heard of David Bowie.

Miller is a standout as Patrick, butonly if you can forget his recent turn asthe eponymous psycho in We Need ToTalk About Kevin. Otherwise, it’sdifficult to read that mad, camp gleamin his eye as being innocent.

Former wooden wizardess Watsonis better than expected, generatingenough warmth for us to believeCharlie might fall under her spell.

Perks skates around darkerelements, and while too cute to beconfronting, it’s an engaging, enter-taining slice of adolescence.

BARRY Hall’s return to Broadford will capturethe attention of the Riddell District FootballLeague in round one next season as the league’seastern outposts open the season.

Broadford will take on Lancefield in Hall’sreturn match on April 6, while near-neighbourWallan will host Melton Central on the same day.

Rupertswood will make its RDFL bow inSunbury away to the reigning premier SunburyKangaroos on April 13. The Roos will play thefeature game on Anzac Day (Thursday, April 25)against Rockbank at Boardman Reserve.

The grand final rematch between Romsey andSunbury Kangaroos has to wait until round eighton June 8 at Romsey Park.

The 13-team league has introduced a bye forone team for the first 14 rounds, and byes forthree teams in the final three rounds(15, 16, 17).

The top-six format for finals remains. ASaturday preliminary final (September 7) andSunday grand final (September 15) will end theseason. The finish two weeks before the AFL

grand final means the competition will wrap up aweek earlier than this year.

The RDFL will play interleague against theKyabram District Football League on eitherSaturday, May 25, or Sunday, May 26, with thevenue to be determined.

Applications for RDFL interleague coach willstay open until December 21.

The league’s name was officially changed atlast week’s annual general meeting to RiddellDistrict Football Netball League Inc, althoughthe acronyms RDFL and RDFLNA will be main-tained for football and netball respectively.

Junior netball divisions have been introducedfor age groups under-12, under-14 and under-16.

Tony Smith and Nathan Micallef retired asboard members at the AGM, while Steve Turnerreturned to the RDFL board after being electedas executive director. One junior directorvacancy is to be filled on the board.

RDFL executive Rod Ward said the league’s2012 profit was about $60,000, with costsdeferred from 2011 meaning the actual profitwas about $80,000.

Castlemaine United in A grade at the weekend.

Rolled for 92 batting first, Kyneton claimed 5-28 in

the Castlemaine United middle order but could not

stop the home team reaching 6-96 at Camp

Reserve. No Kyneton batsman passed 20 runs,

but Andrew Ferres (4-22) and Tom Robson (2-18)

made it a nervous run chase for Castlemaine

United. In A Reserve, Trentham was foiled by

some lower-order resistance from Barkers Creek,

which made 7-157 in reply to Trentham’s 152 all-

out. Jake Sartori (3-18) was best of the Trentham

bowlers as Barkers Creek stumbled to 6-87 in

reply, only to turn the game on a 54-run

Redbacks mull sanctions for final fracasROMSEY Football Club will meet the RiddellDistrict Football League this week and eitheraccept or challenge sanctions stemming fromgrand final day at Lancefield Park.

While the exact sanctions have not beenpublicised, a loss of premiership points is notamong the penalties faced by individuals associ-ated with the Redbacks in either an officialcapacity or as supporters.

Romsey’s club administrators will return to theleague by Friday with their answer on the

sanctions, which were determined after anextensive RDFL investigation.

The Weekly understands the penalties forindividuals relate to the on-ground conduct ofpeople associated with the club after Romsey’son-the-siren loss to Sunbury Kangaroos.

The RDFL annual general meeting addressedthe grand final investigation, with leaguepresident Alan Matthews saying Romsey clubpresident Mark Finegan and secretary MelindaSkinner had been co-operative with the league.

Macedon swept the men’s doubles for a profitof seven games and the women’s doubles by 11,the Cast of Thousands having to wait until themixed doubles to win their only sets of the day.

Macedon’s Kieran McNamara and JaneWalters had perfect afternoons, winning threesets from three.

WOODEND will seek back-to-back GisborneDistrict Cricket Association Twenty20 titlestonight as it takes on Bacchus Marsh at GilbertGordon Oval.

The Bulls return to the final for the first timesince losing a narrow encounter to Riddell in2010.

Woodend advanced to the final with a compre-hensive nine-wicket win against Sunbury lastTuesday night, 1-126 chasing down 9-124.

Brett Beattie (3-23), Warren Else (2-10) andNicholas Dugdale-Walker (2-26) were best of the

Woodend bowlers before Glenn Warner (62 not-out) and Else (54) made light work of the chase.

Woodend reached the target with 29 balls tospare.

Bacchus Marsh advanced to the final with atwo-wicket win against Wallan, surviving a latecollapse from what appeared to be an unbeatableposition. The Bulls made 9-124 off its full 20overs in reply to Wallan’s 9-109, but passed thetarget eight wickets down.

Brad Hansen (43) and Kieran Atkin (29) hadBacchus Marsh in the box seat at 1-85 only for acollapse of 6-23 to even up the match.

Jack Powell (six) and Brenton Payne (four not-

In District Division, St Anthonys will play Gis-borne in tonight’s inaugural final for the newdivision.

Gisborne’s Jason Lock hit an unbeaten centuryto lead the Dragons to an emphatic nine-wicketwin against Hesket in the semi-final, 1-127 chas-ing down 8-111.

Lock’s ton and century opening partnershipwith Ben Robinson (23) got Gisborne to

the winning runs in just 11 overs.Steven Zubrycki had earlier top scored for

Hesket with 42.St Anthonys put the clamps on East Sunbury in

the other semi-final, successfully defending 123all-out by restricting the chase to 8-82 in reply.

Rupertswood, six points adrift on the bottomof the McIntyre Cup table, faces a challengingtarget of 280 for victory this weekend after Sun-bury United made 9-279 on Saturday.

But it looked like being a far smaller totalwhen Ryan Billinghurst’s departure made thescore 7-103 after a collapse of 7-50.

James Hughes (83no) and Leif Louwen-Skovdam (75) stepped up with an eighth-wicketstand of 166.

At Maddingley Park, Kieran Atkin continuedhis dominant summer with the bat for Bacchus

Slips knock Macedon’s hopes awryMACEDON’S prospects of returning to the topfour of Gisborne District Cricket AssociationB grade suffered a late blow on Saturday asSunbury United struck.

After letting United off the hook with the ball,Macedon lost two wickets in its short battingstint before stumps in its chase of 188 for victory.

Macedon will resume at 2-33 this weekendafter bowling out Sunbury United for 187.

But the target could have been much lower ifnot for United No.9 Mark Bitmead scoring 77and sharing a 99-run partnership with JoshuaWallace (42) for the eighth wicket.
