PERSPECTIVES

Say no to heart attackSunday, 8 April, 2012

According to the World HealthOrganization, cardiovascular disease is theleading cause of death globally and is projectedto remain so. It has no geographic, gender orsocial-economic boundaries, althoughgenetically, men have shown a higherpropensity of heart attacks than women.

Normally, your heart needs oxygen tofunction. Heart attacks occur when the coronaryartery that supplies the muscles of the heartwith oxygenated blood is suddenly blocked offby a blood clot. This blood clot can block theartery and shut off blood flow to the heartmuscle. When the heart muscle is starved foroxygen and nutrients, it is called ischaemia.Within minutes of ischaemia, the muscles of theheart will die, thus resulting in a heart attack.

Heart attacks are sudden and intense. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in thecentre of the chest that lasts for more than a fewminutes, or pain that goes away and come back.It can feel like uncomfortable compression, heaviness of the chest, or gripping chest pain. And its symptoms include pain or discomfort inone or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, orstomach, shortness of breadth with or withoutchest discomfort, breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.

The risk factors are smoking, high bloodpressure, physical inactivity, obesity andoverweight, diabetes, stress, alcohol, and dietand nutrition.

A healthy diet is one of the best weaponsto fight against heart attack. The food you eatcan affect other controllable risk factors likeblood pressure, diabetes and overweight.

With high blood pressure exists with otherfactors like obesity, smoking, alcohol anddiabetes, the risk of heaving a heart attackincreases exponentially.

BELFAST, 7 April — Police said a“significant” bomb was found near the mainDublin-to-Belfast motorway on Friday, theanniversary of a peace deal that in 1998largely ended three decades of sectarianviolence in Northern Ireland.

The A1 between Newry and Dublin wasclosed briefly to allow a bomb disposal teamto clear a “viable device” that had thepotential to cause fatalities, a spokeswomanfor the Police Service of Northern Irelandsaid. A police source said investigatorsbelieved the attack may have been carriedout by dissident Irish nationalists opposedto the Good Friday Peace Agreement andmay have been intended to hit a passingpolice patrol.

The agreement largely ended more thanthree decades of violence between mainlyCatholic Irish nationalists opposed to Britishrule of Northern Ireland and predominantlyProtestant unionists who wanted it tocontinue. However, dissident nationalistsopposed to the deal still mount sporadic gunand bomb attacks.

Ex-Intel employee pleadsguilty to theft charges

SAN FRANCISCO, 7 April — A former Intel Corp employeewho allegedly stole from the chipmaker documents worthhundreds of millions of dollars pleaded guilty on Friday to fivecounts of wire fraud. Federal prosecutors in Boston hadalleged that Biswamohan Pani, 36, downloaded some ofIntel’s “most valuable” design and manufacturing documentsin June 2008, in his final days as an engineer in a Massachusettsfacility.

Intel was not aware at the time of the alleged downloadsthat Pani had already sought a position and begun workingat Advanced Micro Devices, Intel’s largest rival in the chipindustry. Pani acted alone and there was no evidence that hewas instructed by AMD to carry out the theft - nor was AMDaware of his actions, prosecutors said. In court filings, Intelestimated the company secrets to be worth at least $200 millionto $400 million.

NEW YORK, 7 April — Like many traditional dishes, greatsushi is as much about the skill of the chef as it is the qualityof the ingredients, and we all know by now that there’s noperson on the planet that can match the dexterity of a robot.Japanese company Suzumo feels the same way, and while itclaims to have created the very first sushi-making robot wayback in 1981, its newest automaton puts all others — andalmost all humans — to shame.

The new bots work as a team: One machine creates theall-important sushi rice mounds at a rate of 3,600 per hour, while the other takes the seaweed wrapping and raw fish andfolds it into the perfect roll. Working at its maximum rate, therobotic roller can craft approximately 300 medium-sized rollsper hour, which averages out to 10 rolls every two minutes. The current human world record sushi roller is JoakimLundblad, whose record stands at 12 rolls in two minutes.

Of course, while Lundblad put every ounce of energy intothat two-minute world record, the Suzumo bot can work at itsmaximum speed 24/7. If the two were put together head-to-head in a marathon sushi-rolling throwdown, the winnerwould likely be the one with a power plug on its backside.Check out the bots in action above, and try not to get toohungry.

LONDON, 7 April — Mobile game Draw Something hasbeen downloaded 50 million times in just 50 days, the game’sowner has said. Zynga, which bought the game’s developerOMGPOP last month, said they believed the figures made itthe “fastest growing” mobile game of all time. The simple gameinvolves players drawing pictures in order to guess words, much like board game Pictionary. At peak times, DrawSomething players create over 3,000 drawings per second.

Apple told the BBC that it did not disclose downloadfigures for specific titles, and therefore could not verifyZynga’s claim. However, Draw Something’s success hasseen it top the iPhone app charts, beating the highly-anticipatedsequel to Angry Birds, Angry Birds Space. In a statement,Zynga said: “We believe it’s not only the fastest growingoriginal mobile game of all time — 50 days to hit 50 milliondownloads - but one of the fastest growing web sensationsthat we’ve seen.”

The company said more than six billion drawings havebeen created on the app so far. In the game, players are givenwords to try to illustrate by drawing on a smartphone ortablet’s touchscreen. If the friend guesses correctly, coins areearned to purchase additional items, such as more colours, within the game. Security experts have warned that scammersare trying to capitalise on the game’s popularity by offeringfake prizes via social networks like Twitter.

Last month, Zynga, which owns other popular socialgames like Farmville, bought small New York-based developerOMGPOP for $180m (£113m; 137m euros). After news of thebuyout broke, OMGPOP chief executive Dan Porter attractedcriticism after tweeting that a former employee - who did notwant to work with Zynga - was “selfish” and the “weakest oneon the whole team”. But although somechanges have been made, theleader of the centre-left SocialDemocrats (SPD), SigmarGabriel, predicted: “It willfail a second time becausethe SPD-led states will not goalong with it.” He said it lefttax evaders too much time tomove their assets to anothertax haven.

“The core problemremains unsolved - that taxcheaters will get away without

punishment.” Under the deal,Germans who have

undeclared assets inSwitzerland would not facepenalties. But they must makea one-off payment of between21% and 41% of their value. That is higher than the 19-34% range initially planned.

Switzerland’s secretivebanks have faced growingpressure internationally asgovernments try to recovertaxes in the wake of thefinancial crisis.

Women can’t rewind ‘biological clock’NEW HAVEN, 7 April — Despite

advances in reproductive techniques manywomen in their 40s do not know theirchances of having a child is low, US fertilityexperts said. “There is an alarming misconception

The Vice-President then presented Chineseagriculturalists with gifts and viewed 19-day old and 22-dayold hybrid paddy plantations.

Speaking on the occasion, the Vice-President said thatas an agricultural country, Myanmar is trying for successfulcultivation of paddy as well as other crops. In doing so,coordinative measures are being taken with the Ministry ofAgriculture and Irrigation to acquire necessary techniques. He next invited open questions for any requirements stressingthe need for efforts of the farmers while departments arefulfilling requirements. Only then, will the agricultural sectorimprove as expected. Moreover, research and developmentare essential for every nation. It is necessary to develop thesector not only in the Nay Pyi Taw area but also in the wholenation. Success will surely be achieved if agricultural tasksmeet the input requirements such as quality strains andfertilizers. Carrying out such tasks needs capital so it will bedifficult for a single farmer to do that by himself, noted the Vice-President. The State on its part will be able to render allassistance only if it is economically strong and it may causea barrier. This is why the private contribution is also necessary, said the Vice-President.

He went on to say that although there is not muchdifference of cultivation acreage between Myanmar andneighbours, there is difference in export volume. Therefore, the State, experts and farmers need to conduct study afterconsidering and reviewing. The State is carrying out eightrural development tasks and paying emphasis on micro-creditservices as well as the improvement of agricultural and meatand fish sectors.

The Vice-President added that looking to the developedcountries, they are found to have been focusing on industrialdevelopment and engaging in agricultural tasks with the useof modern machinery. For Myanmar which relies on agriculturefor fulfilling people’s basic needs, it is to introduce mechanizedfarming in order to improve the agricultural sector. If the nationcan develop the industrial sector while engaging in agriculturalwork, its economy will develop as well. Technology andcapital are necessary to change the conventional farming intomechanized farming. Only if national economy develops, will

the State be able to render assistance in such sectors aseducation and health for the wellbeing of the entire nationalpeople.

The Vice-President continued that farmers are to workhard accepting advice of experts to be successful in theiragricultural business. Regarding the agricultural loans, farmersneed to pay their debts regularly so that additional loans can

THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Sunday, 8 April, 2012 9

Nowadays, the State is undertaking aseries of activities to promote sports andgames so that the standard of sports in thecountry will gradually reach the worldlevel in accordance with the motto“Myanmar Sports—the World toConquer”. Among the many different kindsof sports, hockey is being given a placereceiving encouragement from thegovernment, for success in sports is a sourceof national pride.

Now is a time when people are to takepart in sports as a national concern. Allsports federations and those responsible indifferent events of sports must make fieldtours right down to the grassroots levels, hunt for talented athletes and train themwell so that they will become outstandingones. In this context, the Myanmar HockeyFederation was reconstituted with the motto“ To promote hockey in the entire countryright down to village level”.

In the past, games similar to modernfield hockey were played in many parts ofthe world. The Arabs used curved sticksand a ball fashioned from palm fibres andesparto and the Indians of North and SouthAmerica used bone stick and a deerskinball in a team contest within a goal area.

According to an old manuscript, acrooked-stick game was played in Englandas early as 1175, and the 13th centurystained glass windows of Canterbury andGloucester cathedrals show figures ofyouths holding curved sticks or hitting aball with them. In the 17th century, theIndians of Chile used crooked sticks to

drive a ball through a goal in a game calledcineca, probably an adoption of chueca, apopular game that was brought to the newworld.

Modern field hockey, however, evolvedin the British Isles early in the 19th century, the first organized club, Blackheath, beingestablished in 1840. The style of playundoubtedly developed from the stick andball games as hurley, played in Ireland;shinty, in Scotland; and bandy, in Wales. The name was derived from the French wordhoquet (shepherd’s crook).

In the 19th century, English schools andclubs such as Blackheath, Mosely andWinbledon produced most of the playersand competitions; and in 1875 the Men’sHockey Association of London publishedrevised regulations, which reduced the sizeof the ground and goal posts and number ofplayers in a team.

About this time the British Army wasintroducing the game to the Commonwealthcountries, and Indian later adopted the gameas its national sports.

In 1900, men’s group in England,Ireland and Wales united to form theInternational Hockey Board. When the Scotsjoined in 1942, the rules become uniformthroughout the British Isles. In 1948 theFederation Internationale de Hockey formedin Paris in 1924 became a constituent bodyof the board. All the FIH member countriesrecognized the authority of the board.

Untill 1887, hockey was playedexclusively by men and was regarded toorough and dangerous for women. But in that

year English women adopted the game andorganized the first women’s club in EastMoseley. In 1895 the English LadiesHockey Association, subsequently calledthe All-England Women’s HockeyAssociation, was founded and proceeded topopularize the game for women throughoutthe world. A Women’s Hockey Federationestablished in 1927 included a membershipof 35 countries by the early 1970s.

Field hockey is a major sport in theBritish Isles, where the modern game wasdeveloped. And it was widely played incontinental Europe and in mostCommonwealth countries, especiallyIndian, Pakistan and Australia. As hockeyhas been a permanent part of the OlympicGames since 1928, it spread to all parts of theworld and it is now one of the events ofSummer Olympics held once in every fouryears. It is also included in the Asian Gamesand SES Games.

Myanmar National Sports Committee Chairman’s Hockey Tournamentbeing held at Theinbyu Hockey Pitch.

Hockey was played in the countryduring the pre-war days and there weremany teams in Pyin-Oo-Lwin. The gamewas revived in the country in 1951. It wasplayed at the BA Grounds in Yangon. Later,it was played at the Theinbyu Grounds alsoknown as the Theinbyu Hockey Pitch. There were men’s teams as well as women’steams and the some of the tournamentswere the Open Knockout Tourney, HockeyLeague Tourney, the Knockout Tourney, etc.

Now that the State is givingencouragements to all events of sportsincluding hockey with a view to ensuringachievements in sports as the 27th SEAGames which is a decisive factor forMyanmar athletes is drawing near. And Iam sure that more and more athletes willcome to take part in hockey as it is alsoone of the sports events of the 27th SEAGames to be held in Myanmar in 2013.

dubious honour?— INTERNET

LONDON, 7 April — Theprice of postage is going upsharply in the UK, but it stillwon’t be the most expensiveplace in the world to post aletter, or not quite. Whichcountries earn that dubioushonour? The price of a Britishfirst-class stamp is going upby about a third at the end ofthe month, from 46p to 60p,and the price of a second-class stamp will rise almost40%, from 36p to 50p. But theRoyal Mail says its “prices areamongst the best value inEurope”. Is this true? Itdepends how you look at it.The Royal Mail points out theUK will remain the cheapestplace in Europe to post acertain type of letter — a heavyletter, weighing between 50g(1.76oz) and 100g (3.53oz), ifyou post it second class.

And that’s if you adjustthe price to take into accountthe fact that money goesfurther in some countries where

goods and services aregenerally cheap, than it doesin others. Goods and servicesare relatively expensive in theUK, so the 50p price tag lookscheaper after the adjustment. But what if you post a standardletter — just one or two sheetsof paper — first class? ThenUK prices are not among thebest value in Europe. In fact, the UK is among the top 10most expensive countries,

though its precise position inthe top 10 depends on howyou do the sums.If you convertthe local price into dollars, theUK is the fifth most expensivein Europe. The 60p it will sooncost for a first class stamp is$0.96, behind Finland,Switzerland, Denmark and, infirst place, Norway— where acomparable stamp costs $1.67(9.5 Kroner).

If you adjust for the

relative purchasing power ofthe different countries, the UKis in seventh place amongEuropean countries. Ahead ofit are Denmark in sixth place,Norway in fifth, then Poland,Latvia, Slovakia and, in thetop spot, Bulgaria. Posting aletter in Bulgaria only costs0.85 Lev ($0.68) but to mostBulgarians, that’s a lot. Whenthe Royal Mail does thesecalculations, using slightlydifferent purchasing powercalculat-ions, it places the UKin ninth position. That’sEurope’s 10 most expensivecountries to post a letter. What about the world’s?Inthe BBC’s survey of 65countries around the world,Norway’s $1.67 postage stillcomes out on top. The postoffice there, Posten Norge, told the BBC its prices reflectcompetition from newtechnology, such as email, and the country’s geography.

A snake that swallowed a golf ball in Low Country South Carolina has a new lease on lifethanks to surgery and a new career in environmental education.

A couple spotted the yellow rat snake trying to cross a road in Beaufort, The Island Packetreported. In the snake’s first big break, David Gorzynski and Kim Gundler, who operateBeaufort Kayak Tours, are trained master naturalists.

Dr Mark Guilloud, a veterinarian who showed up to return a kayak, agreed to perform thesurgery.

The procedure took 10 minutes once the snake was anesthetized and was followed byan anxious period when the patient stopped breathing.

Guilloud said he has removed “golf balls, hard balls, socks, blankets, Bert and Ernie —all the kids’ toys” from dogs but the operation was his first on a snake.

The snake is believed to have eaten the ball, a Titleist, while foraging in a chicken coop. The balls are sometimes used to encourage hens.

The Nature Centre at the Lowcountry Institute has given the snake a home. The stitchesare scheduled for removal in two weeks, and Tony Mills said the snake will then be used tohelp educate the public on the benefits provided by rodent-eating rat snakes.

Use of common pesticide, imidacloprid, linked to bee colony collapse

WASHINGTON, 7 April—The likely culprit in sharpworldwide declines inhoneybee colonies since2006 is imidacloprid, one ofthe most widely usedpesticides, according to anew study from HarvardSchool of Public Health(HSPH). The authors, led by

below what is normallypresent in the environment.”Pinpoin-ting the cause of theproblem is crucial becausebees— beyond producinghoney — are prime pollinatorsof roughly one-third of thecrop species in the US,including fruits, vegetables, nuts, and livestock feed suchas alfalfa and clover. Massiveloss of honeybees could resultin billions of dollars inagricultural losses, expertsestimate. Lu and his co-authors hypothesized thatthe uptick in CCD resultedfrom the presence ofimidacloprid, a neonicotinoidintroduced in the early 1990s.Bees can be exposed in twoways: through nectar fromplants or through high-fructose corn syrupbeekeepers use to feed theirbees. Over a 23-week period, they monitored bees in fourdifferent bee yards; each yardhad four hives treated withdifferent levels ofimidacloprid and one controlhive. After 12 weeks ofimidacloprid dosing, all thebees were alive. But after 23weeks, 15 out of 16 of theimidacloprid-treated hives —94% — had died. Thoseexposed to the highest levelsof the pesticide died first.

Alex Lu write that the newresearch provides “convin-cing evidence” of the linkbetween imidacloprid and thephenomenon known asColony Collapse Disorder(CCD), in which adult beesabandon their hives.

“The significance of beesto agriculture cannot beunderestimated,” says Lu.“And it apparently doesn’ttake much of the pesticide toaffect the bees. Our experimentincluded pesticide amounts
