’Tis the season!
I just attended the La Grange High School Awards Program. I’m thankful for how much our community gives back to our students. I’m equally thankful when I look around at all of our young people and how much they give to this community.
I attended a few graduation ceremonies this season. In one of the ceremonies, the class president addressed parents, grandparents, family and friends of the graduates. It was probably one of the best graduation speeches I’ve ever heard. Her theme was the contrast between “what you see” and “what I see”.
She spoke about fellow classmates and what they had been involved in. She mentioned (and invited them to stand) musicians, artists, and athletes. But she also mentioned those involved in the CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) buddy program. She asked those intending to go to college in various fields, but also those intending to go to technical college, enter the workforce directly, and/or enlist in military service. Just about every graduate fell into one of those categories. I was impressed by her speech because what “she sees” and helped us to see is that each of these graduates has a bright future filled with opportunities.
In May we recognized fourteen 8th graders who have completed confirmation. We also recognized several of our high school graduates during worship. In addition to these, we have several people who graduated from colleges and universities with Bachelors and Graduate degrees. We even have a couple who have graduated from Law School! If I tried to name all of them I’d get in trouble because I left someone out. Suffice to say that “what I see” is a bright future for not only for our community but for our church as well.
This may not sound like a “churchy” newsletter article but what I’ve seen is that God has gifted these (our and God's) young people with amazing gifts and a spirit to use those gifts to make the world a better place. I’m encouraged, and I hope you will be to.
That’s what I see!
Pastor Candy
Want to make a difference in the lives of people around the world? This summer there are two ways to not only make a difference, but to see the results of those efforts.
On Sunday, June 24, at the 9:00 a.m. service we will host the Director of ELCA World Hunger, Daniel Rift, who wants to “bring words of gratitude and encouragement.” There will be a brunch and presentation after the service where Daniel will be sharing with us what World Hunger does with our donations.
We have also just received word that Lutheran World Relief (LWR), which works with ELCA World Hunger, has a summer campaign going in which donations to LWR will be MATCHED DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR up to $106,285 until July 24th. Lutheran World Relief works with Lutherans and partners all over the world to end poverty, injustice, and human trafficking.
We invite you to give generously to either (or both) of these two ministries and to attend worship services and the presentation on June 24!
Want to make a bigger difference? Invite your friends!
Chillin’ with Caleb
Hey there St Paul! I hope everyone is looking forward to a great summer, because I know I am. To recap our end-of-the-year, let’s start with WOW. This year, we brought back our WOW program to great success. By the end of April, we had 33 kids registered with our program, which completely blew expectations out of the water. I’d like to take some time to thank Katy Adams, Lisa Moellenberndt, Dianne Lude, and Abbey Roscher for being wonderful volunteers with the program this past year, as WOW would not have been the success it was without them. Confirmation also concluded not long ago, with our class of 14 confirming their faith on May 6th. They brought energy and a willingness to learn every time they stepped foot in the church. I greatly look forward to them joining us in LYO. Which makes for a wonderful transition, as we also wrapped up our regular programming for LYO in May. We had our end-of-the-year party on May 9th, complete with Pulled Pork and Swimming. Overall, we had a wonderful and successful year with our High School Youth programming and we look forward now to our summer trip.
As we enter the summer season, our regular children’s programming comes to a close but that does not mean we are without plenty of work to be done here at St Paul. First up, the LYO will embark on our annual summer trip on June 23rd. We’ll visit Corpus Christi first and do some service work in Port Aransas. Then we will head to Houston for the 2018 ELCA National Youth Gathering, and we’ll finish our trip off by spending a few days at the Zion Retreat Center in Galveston, TX. After that, I’ll be heading to Confirmation Camp with our confirmands for the week of July 8-13. The busy summer will then conclude with VBS here at St Paul on the week of July 16-20. VBS is open to any children up to those that have just completed 6th grade. Registration forms can be found online on our website or can be picked up in the office.
Caleb was Installed as the Faith Life Leader at St Paul on June 25th, 2017. He graduated Cum Laude from Texas A&M University in May 2017 with a BA in History. He brings 5+ years of working with Youth through his past employment at Lutherhill Ministries as well as volunteering with Youth Groups in college. His dream is to visit all the National Parks in the continental United States
Caleb can be reached in person in the office Tuesday through Friday, via email at [email protected], or via his cell phone at (512) 944-7859.
SECOND CHANCE volunteers work Tuesday-Saturday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. doing various jobs and from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on the Mondays following.

The Foot of this cross is open and always will be. You can lay your burdens at the foot of the cross knowing Christ will lift them from you.
At the end you will come to the foot of the cross knowing that Christ will now lift you up onto himself.
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:28-29 (NIV)

You can make a difference in the fight against cancer! Join us and become a Road to Recovery
Driver. Often times, patients can’t get their lifesaving cancer treatment because they don’t
have a ride to treatment. Additional drivers are needed now to continue this critical service to
the La Grange / Fayette County Community.
About the program:
Road to Recovery is an American Cancer Society service program that provides cancer
patients with transportation to and from scheduled cancer-related appointments.
Volunteer drivers donate both their time and the use of their personal vehicles to take
ambulatory patients to treatments and to return them to their homes.
Volunteer drivers are provided a brief training, and must have a current driver’s license,
insurance and inspections on vehicles.
You may not be able or you may not be interested in driving….but do you know someone who
is? You can make a difference! Several Saint Paul members are currently involved or have
been involved with the program – ask Ruth Hensel, Delores Bayer, Verlene Citzler, Bubba
Riehs, David Stancik, or Frank Teykl about the rewards of being a volunteer driver, or:
Contact Program Manager Ken Taylor at: 979-966-2761.

To all the Quilting Ladies and St. Paul, Thank you very much for the beautiful Stitches of Love quilt that all of you made and gave to me for my upcom-ing high school Graduation. I will put it to very good use when I go to college in Waco. You are a very talent-ed group of ladies and I know that every stitch was done with love. I also know that when I use it I will always feel God’s presence around me.
Thanks again for the beautiful quilt. Justin Anders
