As the Player of the Year race winds down, it’s become a three-man contest. As of Friday, with two days to go, Dennis Bilde is in the lead with 751.64 platinum points, almost 85 ahead of Jeff Meckstroth.

The race measures the number of platinum points a player earns at the three NABCs during a calendar year.

of the Lavazza team, Bilde also placed second in both the Spingold in Toronto and the Jacoby Open Swiss Teams in the spring. He was also a quarterfinalist in the Vanderbilt and placed fifth in the Mitchell Open BAM.

Glenn meets Ms. Bid Too Much

Glenn Eisenstein was playing in a pairs game with his wife, Abbie, when he had an experience that probably had him thinking, “Just when you think you’ve seen everything . . .”

Eisenstein opened a weak 2♦ and his left-hand opponent passed. Abbie raised to 3♦ and RHO doubled for takeout. Eisenstein passed and LHO bid 2♣. When it was pointed out that 2♣ was insufficient, LHO corrected to 3♣. “You’re getting close,” said Eisenstein, “but it’s still not enough.” Finally, LHO bid 4♣.

Abbie raised to 4♦ and RHO doubled again. Eisenstein made the contract, and the discussion between the opponents began.

“What did you have?” asked the player who doubled twice. “I had just three points,” was the answer. “But,” said the doubler, “you bid three times!”

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS

Opening lead: ♠Q.Bidding commentary: West has a minimum

weak two-bid (6 high-card points) but compensating values, a strong suit (three honors). As South, doubling 2♠ and then bidding 3NT is stronger than bidding 3NT directly.

Defensive commentary: As East, overtake the ♠Q with the ace to avoid blocking the suit and return a spade to drive out the king. The defense is off to a good start.

Play commentary: As South, the bidding and East’s play at trick one mark East with a doubleton spade. The idea of a holdup play is not necessarily to win the third round of a suit. The idea is to take the trick when the player with shortness is playing her last card in the suit. East is marked with two spades, so win the second spade. If you can’t be sure whether the opponent with shortness has two or three cards, win the third round of the suit. Finally, if one opponent is marked with a singleton, it is safe to win the first round of the suit. It really is.

Play commentary #2: As South, after winning the second spade, count your sure tricks. You have one spade, one heart, two diamonds and four clubs for a grand total of eight. You can always try the heart finesse, but that finesse goes into the danger hand, West, the hand with winning spades galore.

A better idea is to keep the danger hand off lead by working with diamonds. You do this by finessing into the non-danger hand (East), the one who has no more spades. Cash three top clubs and lead a diamond to the 9. After this loses, win the heart return with the ace, cross to the ♦K noticing West show out, cash the ♣J, discarding a heart, and lead a diamond to the 10. The ♦A is your ninth trick. Your 22 HCP were barely enough to bring this baby home. A simple rule of thumb is to aim all finesses into the safe hand, not the danger hand.

Have you discussed? Balancing

By Brent ManleyA lot of what

has been written for these pages has encouraged you to discuss agreements that help you compete in the bidding. An important aspect of competing is the practice known as “balancing.” It’s losing bridge to allow the opponents to play comfortably in low-level contracts. Consider this auction: West North East South 1♥ Pass 2♥ Pass Pass ?

North should strain to take some action, even bidding 2♠ on a four-card suit if necessary. Most experts agree that if the opponents have found an eight-card fit, your side probably has one, too. You must try to find it. The reason for discussion of this principle is that both players must consider that when partner bids in the passout seat, partner is bidding both hands – his own and his partner’s based on the inference that his side must have some high-card strength or the opponents wouldn’t have stopped bidding.

There are other balancing situations, including this one: West North East South 1♦ Pass Pass ?

East is known to be extremely weak, so South can balance with a hand of medium strength on the assumption that partner has unrevealed strength. The normal range for a bid by South in this situation is 8-13 HCP.

There are some danger signs, however. Using the previous auction as an example, it would be dangerous for South to take action with a hand such as this:♠3 ♥A Q 6 4 ♦K J 5 3 ♣Q 6 4 2.

South could bid 1♥, but he must consider that the opponents have a spade fit, which they are almost sure to discover if given the chance. It’s best to pass and let West play in what could be a tough contract of 1♦.

When South has substantially more than medium strength and finds himself in the passout seat as in the example auction, he can show that hand with a jump bid. A bid of, say, 2♠ would show a good six-card suit with 12-16 HCP.

A balancing double will usually be close to what you would have for a direct double of an opening bid, but it could be weaker – as low as 9 HCP with ideal distribution.

A point of discussion for you is the balancing 1NT bid. Decide on your range and whether your regular 1NT response system is still “on.” A popular range is 10-14 HCP, but 12-16 has support. A jump to 2NT shows a balanced hand, a stopper in opener’s suit and 18-19 HCP.

Alarm bells should go off when the opponents have an apparent misfit. Consider this auction: West North East South 1♣ Pass 1♥ Pass 2♣ Pass 2♥ Pass Pass ?

East-West may have substantial high-card strength but quit bidding because the hands don’t fit well.

Balancing can occur even before one member of your partnership makes it to the passout seat. Consider this auction: West North East South 1♥ Pass 2♥ ? South, holding ♠K Q J 10 3 ♥5 ♦8 7 6 2 ♣9 4 3, can “pre-balance” with a bid of 2♠ because North may lack length in spades, a factor that probably would keep him from balancing.

For most people in the I/N room, whether or not this is your first NABC is a straightforward question. Not for Karen Eddy of Fallbrook CA. “If I have been to one, it would have been 45 years ago,” she said. After playing for about five years in the early ’70s with her husband Lance, she took a very long, work-and-family-induced break from bridge, just returning a few months ago. “I’m a beginner again. I like to feel like I haven’t lost all of what I used to know.”

local volunteers.Lamya Agelidis, our San Diego liaison arranged

a cadre of great people to assist us. Wendy Turk and Chris Champion at the very

popular Welcome Desk (bet you enjoyed the great embroidered polo shirts!).

Debbie and Alan Gailfus, Jim and Shay Andrews were all so professional at the information partnership desks every day.

Nance Lodge and helpers doled out thousands of beautiful T-shirts and flashlight/key chains to those who won a section or overall.

Gigette Caldwell was terrific in compiling the best restaurant guide.

Marge Van Hemert watched over the caddies.Marty Roth provided volunteer hospitality. Bill Grant kept track of the tournament finances. The Intermediate/Newcomer area was the

best ever under the expert leadership of Maritha Pottenger and Marc Matz supplying lavish gifts, awards and lessons. Liz Hamilton and Rolf Houtkooper (NABC chairs themselves) were delightful in arranging partnerships for these new and advancing players.

A great crew, a great city, a great hotel and a great tournament. Thank you all for coming.

Maui mayor

At the time, Arakawa was running an office for Equitable Life Insurance. When his supervisor in that job found out about his interest in bridge, “he mandated that I keep playing,” Arakawa said. “He said it was a good way to meet people, and he didn’t mind that I wasn’t in the office all the time.”

As one of Maui’s top two or three chess players, Arakawa has donated hundreds of chess sets to school children. “I would teach chess if I had the time,” he said.

Arakawa decided to go into politics during his time as supervisor at a Maui County wastewater management facility. Frustrated at finding it hard to get anything done because of the layers of bureaucracy, he sought a way to change the process. “I decided to work from the top,” he said.

The first step was his successful campaign for a position on the county council in 1994. Four years later, he ran for mayor. He lost but came back in 2002 and was elected mayor. He lost in the next mayoral election but has won twice since then. He is a year away from completing his current term as mayor. With that, he will be the longest serving mayor in Maui County history.

Arakawa plays each year at the Honolulu Regional but rarely travels away from Hawaii to play bridge. In 1977, with just one masterpoint to his credit, Arakawa attended the Spring NABC in Pasadena, but it was only because he was in the area visiting family.

The 2017 Fall NABC, he said, is really “my first one away from Hawaii.”

Arakawa said he enjoys playing bridge despite the frustrations that come with the game from time to time. “I enjoy it, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t torture,” he said.

The mayor said he and Rogers always take their wives when they go to bridge tournaments. “We get to play. The penalty is that the wives go shopping. That’s how we even it up.”

After the war, I went back to Egypt and started playing at the local bridge club, where I met great players. I improved my cardplay using Autobridge, and ended up in the news for the first time: An Egyptian newspaper described me as a promising talent.

How did you become a member of the Italian Blue Team?

The Blue Team had already won three world titles when, in 1961, I was suddenly called, just 10 days before the start of the championship. Pietro Forquet’s partner had an unexpected work commitment. I replied with this telegram: “Thank you for the desired invitation and I confirm my enthusiastic participation. Stop. Best wishes. Stop.”

When, a few months ago my partner and I were called on for the Italian National Team for the 2017 World Championships, we sent the Italian Bridge Federation these same exact words, 56 years later. The only difference is that this time it was by email!

In 1961, I was to play with Pietro Forquet. I almost did not know him and we had never played together before.

We had only 10 days to build up a partnership, so each afternoon we met at Forquet’s place with Eugenio Chiaradia, who helped us to train. We used to remove the 2s, 3s and 4s from the deck, deal the cards and bid. I had always used a natural system, so I had to learn the Neapolitan Club in few days starting from zero. Anyway we were a complementary partnership: I was very aggressive, while Pietro was extremely solid and never taking risks. We were awarded as the best partnership of the championship and we won the Bermuda Bowl.

Just like 56 years ago, the invitation to play on the 2017 Open team came at the very last minute. I took a photo with Giovanni Donati, the youngest player on the team, aged 19. I put in his hands the Bermuda Bowl that I had won in 1961 and told him: “This is your first world championship and I wish that you can win it, like it has happened to me!”

Unfortunately we did not win and I know it was mainly because of my partner and me.

I am very happy that I had this opportunity. I think nobody will hit the record of playing in an Open event for the national team at 90 years old!

You have invented many bidding systems…Thanks to computers, everybody improved in

card play. Nowadays, results are achieved during bidding, especially in competition.

The bidding system gives a 5-10 percent average advantage, which seems not much, but if you think that we have lost world championships by 2 or 3 IMPs, you can see how big a difference bidding methods can make.

At the beginning of my career, I only played

Giovanni Donati and Benito Garozzo hold the 1961 Bermuda Bowl.

natural. When they taught me the Neapolitan Club, I became very much interested in bidding systems. Together with Giorgio Belladonna I invented the New Roman Club and the the Lancia Club. The Dutch Bridge Federation hired me to give lessons to their Open and Women’s teams, so I invented a specific system for them: the Volmac. Soon after, I invented the system that I am still playing. I created it for my beloved Lea Dupont, who had come to Italy to improve her bridge and had found an Italian partner. They did not know the Strong Club, so I decided to build up a good system on natural bases for them and I invented GAR. [Ed: the system takes its name from the first letters of Benito’s last name.]

At the top of my career, a Chinese player contacted me and hired me to play Precision. He has asked me if I was up to developing Super Precision, and so I did. Now I have another system in mind, a kind of “half-strong Club,” which will be disclosed in my new book, together with many other conventions that can be included in any bidding system. The book will also include a part on leads: many hands will be presented to the best players in the world and they will explain how they would lead and why.

You have had many bridge partners in your life.

Yes, and I want to say that my successes are especially due to the fact that I have always played with very strong players: Forquet, Belladonna, Arturo Franco, Lorenzo Lauria, Dano De Falco, Vito Pittalà and many others.

The new generation of bridge players is extremely talented. The future of bridge is guaranteed. Among the young ones, I am very impressed by Agustin Madala.

As for me, I will keep playing for all my life, but when I realize that my level is not satisfying anymore, I will stop playing in public. I will retire and play only online, probably hiding behind a pseudonym.

Play well, earn a pushOn this deal from the first qualifying session of

the Keohane North American Swiss Teams, Marshall Lewis had to play well to earn a push. He was playing with Fredrik Helness. Dlr: South ♠ A 8 6 Vul: None ♥ K 9 5 4 ♦ K 6 ♣ Q 9 6 4 ♠ Q J 10 7 ♠ K 9 5 4 2 ♥ Q 10 7 3 ♥ — ♦ A 10 4 ♦ 9 8 7 3 ♣ J 3 ♣ A 8 5 2 ♠ 3 ♥ A J 8 6 2 ♦ Q J 5 2 ♣ K 10 7 West North East South Helness Lewis 1♥ Pass 2NT Pass 3♠ Pass 4♦ Pass 4♥ All Pass

2NT was a game-forcing raise of hearts; 3♠ indicated shortness.

West led the ♠Q, taken in dummy with the ace. At trick two, Lewis played dummy’s ♦6 to his queen and West’s ace. Lewis ruffed the spade continuation and played a diamond to dummy’s king. He continued with a club to his king, followed by the ♦J: 10, ♣4, ♦8. When Lewis played the ♦5, West discarded the ♣J. Lewis ruffed the diamond in dummy. East followed suit. Lewis ruffed a spade to hand and played a club to dummy’s 9 and East’s ace, West discarding his last spade. On the club return, Lewis followed with the 10 and West, down to all trumps, had to ruff and lead away from his ♥Q 10 7, eliminating Lewis’s loser in that suit. That was plus 420 for his side.

Had Lewis gone down, the team would have lost 10 IMPs because, at the other table, South made 10 tricks in hearts on a less-challenging defense.

Like ‘War and Peace’?Mark Bennett of Honolulu HI was playing in the

Daylight Open Pairs on Friday when he overheard an extremely long-winded director call at the next table. As the players at that table continued to divulge what sounded like irrelevant information to the director, Bennett leaned over to his right-hand opponent and said, “Gosh, it’s like ‘War and Peace’ over there.” She surprised him by pulling out a book from her purse: volume one of Tolstoy’s famously verbose novel. “Actually, I have ‘War and Peace’ right here,” she said.

Slow PlaySlow play, especially habitual slow play, is a

violation of law and subject to penalty. When a pair has fallen behind, it is incumbent on them to make up the time lost as quickly as possible whether at fault or not.

In the absence of compelling evidence to the contrary, the director should presume that a pair finishing a round late by more than two or three minutes on more than one occasion during a session is responsible for the lateness. There is a strong expectation that the director will penalize such a pair. The size of a penalty will tend to increase for subsequent instances of slow play and for chronic or egregious slow play.

While warnings typically will be given before a penalty is assessed, failure to do so in no way limits the director’s authority to issue a penalty.

Players are expected to be aware, in a general sense, of time used and remaining in a segment in which they are playing regardless of whether a clock is in use or a time announcement has been made. An excuse of “no announcement” or “no clock immediately visible” will not be considered persuasive.

In consultation with the DIC of the tournament, the TD may require that a particular pair not play in a specified segment, not play against a specified pair or not play together as a pair. The foregoing is expected to be applied only due to egregious circumstances or to unduly repetitious offenders.

An appeal of an action taken by a TD with regard to time may be taken to the Director in Charge, and no further. While a time monitor may be employed, the lack of a monitor in no way limits the TD’s authority to apply one or more of the remedies listed below.

The TD may choose to ignore an occasional minor late finish. The TD may remove one or more boards from a segment. The TD may award no score (when neither team is more at fault), an assigned score (when a result already exists at one table which the TD wishes to preserve) or an artificial score in IMPs. Every effort should be made to remove boards before they can be played at either table, but not having done so does not preclude removing one or more later.

Appealing a ruling Players in NABC+ events who want to appeal

a director’s ruling initiate the process by speaking with the director who delivered the original ruling. The table director will fill out paperwork regarding the appeal, and the appellants will explain what they believe to be wrong with the initial ruling. From there, the case may be handled by a variety of means. When the appeals reviewer receives the case, the circumstances of that particular case will determine whether the case can be resolved by the original staff (in the case of misapplication of Law or regulation, for instance), a panel of directors, or even a committee-type hearing which could include bridge experts.

MonitoringAt this and future North American

Championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+ events with visible, real-time cameras. The images will be recorded and available for later inspection and review by officials.

By general monitoring of the session and participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table.

This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated.

With a little help from the DBy Mark Aquino

Playing with Alan Watson in the second Thursday A/X Pairs, I encountered a very spiffy squeeze ending. With a little help from the defense, I was able to score 12 tricks in notrump – missing two aces! Dlr: West ♠ A Q 10 2 Vul: Both ♥ Q J 8 3 ♦ K J 4 ♣ K J ♠ K 6 5 4 ♠ 9 8 ♥ A 5 4 ♥ 10 7 6 2 ♦ A 7 6 5 2 ♦ Q 8 ♣ 3 ♣ 10 9 8 6 4 ♠ J 7 3 ♥ K 9 ♦ 10 9 3 ♣ A Q 7 5 2 West North East South Aquino Watson 1♦ 1NT Pass 3NT All Pass

Opening lead: ♦Q.West ducked the opening lead (or there would be

no story!). North won the king, cashed two clubs in hand, West pitching a heart. Now a heart went to the ♥K and ♥A, and West returned a low diamond, which was allowed to run to the 9 in dummy.

The ♣A and ♣Q of clubs were cashed, with West pitching two diamonds, and North pitching the ♦J of diamonds and a heart.

When I led the ♠J from dummy, West covered with the king, and I won the ace. I now cashed the ♠Q – noting the 9–8 doubleton in the East hand. I then cashed the ♥Q, creating this three-card ending: Dlr: West ♠ 10 2 Vul: Both ♥ J ♦ — ♣ — ♠ 6 5 ♠ — ♥ — ♥ 10 7 ♦ A ♦ — ♣ — ♣ 10 ♠ 7 ♥ — ♦ 10 ♣ 7

Declarer cashed the last heart, pitching a club from dummy, and now West was squeezed; she pitched the ♣A to keep the spade guard. The ♠2 was led to dummy’s 7, and the ♦10 was the 12th trick.

ACBL Live is a section of the ACBL website that allows users to search tournament results in a variety of ways and offers much more data on each event within a tournament than was available before its creation. ACBL Live offers comprehensive results for every player and every session within an event at any ACBL tournament.

Overalls from events at the NABC and qualifiers are still listed in the Daily Bulletin. But the pages of small-print session results are no longer included. This guide will help you find those results online.

During NABCs, the main feature on the ACBL home page is a quick link to ACBL Live results for the current tournament.

You can return to this data trove after the tournament is over by clicking on the Live tab, third from left on the home page. From the main ACBL Live landing page, there are two ways you can get started: by searching for a player or a tournament. The quick link available during NABCs bypasses this page.

Viewing session resultsWhether you search by player or by event, you come

to a page with a list of events broken down by session. In the right column of this page are several blue links that lead to the various results pages for each session. These vary by type of event and stage of progress of the event. Here’s a breakdown of the options.

1 SummaryThe summary page has all result information for an

event on one page; the other links break out portions of the information on the summary page. At the top of the page you will find Overalls or Leaderboards and Recaps. For pair games, scroll down and you will see the board-by-board scores and hands. For team games, you will see a link to the Bracket.

2 Overalls and LeaderboardsThe Overalls page lists pairs or teams in order of

overall score. Pairs or teams who won masterpoints are shown, and the quantity and color of these session awards are listed. These listings may be preliminary.

3 RecapsThe recaps page lists all pairs or teams, split up

by section and direction for pairs events. The first section alphabetically will be shown; click on the section letters to see a different section.

4 HandsThe hands page provides a compact view of the

hand records for a session. Each board is displayed, with a DoubleDummy hand analysis.

5 BracketsACBL Live uses FastResults for brackets for Swiss

and KO events. Flights and placements are color-coded based on the legend on the top left.

6 QualifiersFor two- and three-day NABC and NABC+ events,

the list of qualifiers you see in the Daily Bulletin is also available on Live.

Using ACBL Live to find results

7 Personal ScoresBoth the overall list and the recap have a Personal

Scores column at right with links to scores pages for each pair. Click on the Scores link to see board-by-board results for a particular pair. A You can switch which pair you are viewing using

the Select a Pair dropdown. B For multi-session events, you can also switch to a

different session using the dropdown at the top of each results page.

C The results tables on each of these pages can be reordered by clicking on the column header that

you want to sort by. So, if you want to see your board results listed from best to worst, click on either the Matchpoints or % column from the personal scores page. You can also click on a player’s name to see other results for that player, which works the same as the Player Search from the Live home page.

A Searching by eventOn the San Diego NABC page of ACBL Live,

there are several ways to look for results. The body of the page is a list of events with most recent on top, and pagination tools allow you to page through that list. In the upper right, the key events box highlights those most frequently searched. Below key events is an Event Search box where you can find an event by entering three or more letters of its name. There is also a Player Search box to the left of key events.

B Searching by playerThe Player Search offers a quick way to find all

results for yourself or any player. For those reading at home who can’t make it to the San Diego NABC but want to know how your friends here are doing, this is the place to look.

Click in the search box and enter the player’s last name, first name. An auto-complete list of players matching your entry will appear below the search box. Click on the line for the player you want.

You will be taken to a page that lists all the recent sessions the player participated in, not just those in San Diego.
