From the Pastor’s Desk Great expectations bring great joy. When a child is born into a family there is great joy and expecta-tion. Joy that God has blessed the family with such a wonderful gift and, expectation that this little baby will grow to become a wonderful human being. The birth of a child encourages everyone in the family to reflect on their own birth and consequent life. Hopes that a new born will grow, learn and become a good and successful adult are what fuel our joy at the birth of a child. Our second birth is no different. There is much joy at a baptism. The joy experienced at witnessing a child’s baptism is shallow if we have little expectations for them as a follower of Jesus. The Rite of Baptism many times speaks of the expectations of the faithful who witness the event and the expectations of the newly baptized infant or adult. When you and I participate in the baptism of a new member, we enter once again the waters of our own baptism; waters that breed joy and expecta-tion. You and I are moved to reflect upon our own baptism and our life as we have lived it in Christ. The Christmas Season ends today on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. This joyful season concludes with Jesus coming out of the Jordan to GO FORTH to live in God’s grace and to do God’s work. It is no accident that we draw the joy of Christmas to a close with the expectation of what this child Jesus is to become. There is no reason for a joy-filled Christmas if we do not have an expectation that it will lead us to live our baptism more closely in the year that follows. Jesus’ baptism is recounted for you and me so we can reflect upon our baptism. His commissioning is recounted so we can recall how we have been called from heaven by God: “You are my son, my daughter, on whom my favor rests.” These words have an air of joy and expecta-tion. Joy that we are God’s children, heirs to God’s life, and expectation that we will live and grow in our life in Christ. You and I are sent forth from the joy of Christmas to live that life our Christmas parties have just celebrated.

As we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, let us recall our own Baptism. We have all received the call to go and baptize all nations. Pray for those who are consid-ering if they too are ready to renounce Satan and all his works and empty promises. Please call 322-4505, ext. 241 for information.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA ) is the process for those who are over the age of 8, baptized in another faith tradition, non-baptized, or only baptized in the Catholic faith and wish to complete their Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. This week’s Warrior of the Week is Morgan Battig. Morgan has been a student at St. Michael School since 2nd grade, and is considering either Marian Catholic or Mount Carmel for high school next year. Morgan plays basketball, soccer and volleyball for the Warriors. He also does all types of volunteer work, both inside and outside of the school. Morgan’s favorite thing about SMS is the atmosphere between the students and the teachers. When he graduates, he will miss his friends because he has strong friendships with them and won’t see them every day again. Morgan’s advice to younger students is, “Have fun because things change in the blink of an eye.” We wish you the best in your future, Morgan! Submitted by Jen Poskin

First Graders Know How to Celebrate Christmas

Letters to Santa

Mrs. Rusin’s first graders prepared for Christmas by writing a letter to Santa Claus. Our wonderful eighth graders were charged with helping them write their first draft and then aid them in typing it in their Computer class. The first graders were able to tell Santa how good they were throughout the year and to ask him some questions. We hope Santa put them all on the Nice list! Submitted by Kathleen Pagorek

Santa’s SMS Reindeer Staff

If Santa is looking for a new team of reindeer to pull his sled next Christmas Eve, he can count on the “SMS Reindeer Staff!” The first and eighth grade students had a great time creating reindeer in which each reindeer represented a staff member from SMS. The students worked collaboratively together and came up with decorative details to add to the reindeer. Then these were hung up in the hallway for the students and staff to guess which reindeer represented each teacher. Submitted by Catherine Rusin

All Aboard the Polar Express During every Advent season, Mrs. Rusin and her first grade students celebrate many Christmas traditions together. One of their favorite adventures is boarding the “Polar Express” for a day! They begin the day by coming to school in their pajamas. Then Mrs. Rusin and Mrs. McKenna read Chris Van Allsburg’s “The Polar Express” to the students. During their ride, they made stops at various learning stations. At one station, they made reindeer food to feed Santa’s reindeer on Christmas Eve! The students created reindeer antlers with the assistance of the sixth graders. In addition, they learned many facts about reindeer. As the afternoon approached, they made a stop at the bakery station and decorated their own cookies to later enjoy with some hot chocolate and whipped topping! They sipped their hot chocolate while holding their stuffed animal friends and enjoyed watching “The Polar Express” movie. The last stop was very fun because Fr. Gregory stopped in with his guitar, and they sang Christmas songs together! Submitted by Catherine Rusin

SAINT ANTHONY, ABBOTT (250-356)

January 17th

Anthony "the Great" ranks with those saints whose life exercised a profound influence upon succeeding genera-tions. He was born in Middle Egypt (about 250) of distinguished parents. After their untimely deaths, he retired to the desert in order to live in perfect solitude. One day while in church he heard the words of the Gospel: "If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have, and give it to the poor" (Matt. 19:21). It seemed as if Christ had spoken to him personally, giving a command he must obey. Without delay he sold his property, gave the proceeds to the poor, and went into the desert (about 270). When overcome by fatigue, his bed was the hard ground. He fasted rigorously, ate only bread and salt, and drank only water. Nor would he take food before sundown; at times he passed two days without any nourishment. Often, too, he spent whole nights in prayer. The saint suffered repeatedly from diabolical attacks, but these merely made him more steadfast in virtue. He would encourage his disciples in their struggle with the devil with such words: "Believe me; the devil fears the vigils of pious souls, and their fastings, their voluntary poverty, their loving compassion, their humility, but most of all their ardent love of Christ our Lord. As soon as he sees the sign of the Cross, he flees in terror." He died in 356 on Mount Kolzin by the Red Sea, 105 years old. catholicculture.org

THE WORD (Readings for January 20, 2019, The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time)

I. Isaiah 62:1-5 As a young man marries a virgin, so the Lord will marry Israel. No longer will she be called “Forsaken,” for she is now the precious one of God and will be called “My Delight.”

II. 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 There is one Spirit from whom come many gifts. Each person is given a

different gift to use for the common good. We are all united in the one Spirit through our individual gifts.

III. John 2:1-11 Jesus and His mother were invited to a wedding feast at Cana. There He

performed the first of His great signs, changing water to wine. Thus He revealed His glory to all.

Dear Parish Members, Our Sunday bulletin is a primary way we use to communicate with you. The parish does not pay for the bul-letin printing because of the generosity of our advertisers-many of which are our own parish members. Most are members of our local community. Please support our advertisers with your patronage. Let the business owner know that you appreciate their support of our parish through their advertising in the bulletin.

A strong and vibrant parish is good for our community and a strong business community is good for our parish.

If you would like to advertise in our bulletin, please call Barbara at 219-427-4803.
