meal for each family in our Association that receives a

BWM Events in November!

NOV 1 $5 FRIDAY CANDY MAKING

Make sure you mark your calendar and sign up for Christmas Candy-Making Day at 10:00 am on Friday, November 1, 2019 in the OC Kitchen! BWM special candy-makers will be Darlene Phillips and Maurie Johnson. They are looking forward to sharing their candy-making skills with you. Not only will you learn how to make their family recipes, but you will get to take some candy home with you! The class is $5.00 which will cover cost of ingredients. NOV 3 FIRST SUNDAY FOOD DONATIONS Food donations are given to Owensville Baptist Church on Highway 5. Folks living in our vicinity need help in providing enough food for their families. Many of those needing assistance are grandparents taking care of their grandchildren. Give with a generous heart!

NOV 7 FIRST THURSDAY PRAYER TIME

Ladies are invited to First Thursday Prayer Time from 10am-11am on November 7th in the Welcome Sunday School room. Please join us as we encourage each other in lifting our praises, concerns, prayers and thanksgiving to God. We have a place for you. NOV 14 GIRLS, GAMES, & GOODIES

Girls, Games, and Goodies (GGG) will meet on November 14th in the Outreach Center from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. GGG is always a great day of fun, fellowship, and food. This is a wonderful way to meet new people and learn to play a new game. Please remember your non-perishable food items for Harvey's Chapel's Food Pantry. We encourage guests to double up on their items this month and donate items that will help families as they prepare for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. It is simple way to share our blessings with those in need around us. In November, we will be enjoying a Baked Potato Bar, with all the trimmings. It is important to have an accurate number of ladies who are attending to ensure we have plenty of food for all to enjoy. This will be our last GGG for 2019. We are going out with a bang! We will resume on January 9, 2020. FALL MISSION PROJECT Balboa Women's Ministry is continuing our Fall Mission project for the Jackson House (JH) in Hot Springs who distribute food and clothing to the homeless. We are asking donations from GGG attendees for stretchy gloves, socks and sweatshirts. You may donate new items or clean, "like new" things to put in 3 green bins which will be located by the main office, the OC and the back of the church. If you prefer to contribute money just make your check out to BBC and put JH on the memo line. A basket for cash/checks will be on the GGG Sign-in table on November 14th. All funds will be spent to purchase more of these items or food, whatever the greater need. Everything collected will be taken to Jackson House after November 14. We appreciate and THANK YOU for your support for this mission project! Our prayer is it will help warm folks on the outside and that God's tender love warms them on the inside.

SAVE THE DATE FOR LADIES CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON

The Ladies Christmas Luncheon will be on Tuesday, December 3rd from 12:00 pm -2:00 pm in the Outreach Center. Dr. Essie Belle will be sharing a 'Christmas Experience' with us. Reserved seating will be available online via My Balboa, main office, OC, and in Bible classes for BBC ladies (and their guests) beginning Sunday, October 6. Reservations will be open for all villagers beginning Monday, October 28. Reservations are $12 each and tables of up to eight may be reserved. Single reservations may also be made. CHRISTMAS SERVING MEN

MEN-the Ladies Annual Christmas Luncheon is Tuesday, December 3 in the Outreach Center. It is a tradition for our men to serve the ladies. We need your help. A sign-up sheet is on the Men’s Ministry board in the Fellowship Hallway. The first 20 men to sign up will be our servers. If you can’t get to the Fellowship Hallway, e-mail Diane McGhee at mcgheedm@earthlink.net and she will put you on the list.

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY OPPORTUNITIES

Our Fall Bible Study classes have concluded. It’s now time to begin planning for Spring classes. We are hoping to provide a variety of studies, however, we need additional instructors/facilitators. If you are interested and willing to facilitate or co-facilitate a Bible Class, please contact Jody Moore at 318-452-0589.

THREADS OF HOPE

Threads of Hope will not be meeting in November or December but will meet at 9:00 am, January 23, 2020. The sewing ministry has grown in ways that were unexpected. Attendance has increased to a record high of 31. Our outreach efforts have been very successful, and often we have more non-BBC members attending than members. The items we make are now being requested by organizations.

Teen and Adult Challenge, Hot Springs, requested pillowcases and caps; Arkansas Hospice Inpatient Care facilities and Home Care requested pillowcases and Fidget Mats; Good Samaritan Society, Hot Springs Village, requested walker bags and Fidget Mats, and Starting Over Ministries, Hot Springs requested pillowcases and quilts for children. We will continue to make those requests items in 2020.

The Crochet and Knitting group started with four people in July, and in September they also had a record high attendance of nine. April Catlett, our instructor, has not only taught newcomers to crochet and knit, she has inspired them to continue making caps after the meeting has ended. The group has made 131 caps for preemies and toddlers at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock! The Yarn, hooks, needles, and patterns are provided. If you do not know how to crochet or knit, April can teach you.

At the September meeting, Threads of HOPE volunteers made 47 pillowcases, sewed 20 quilt tops for homeless shelters, and started working on embellishments for Fidget Mats. A delicious lunch of pulled pork, baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, carrot cake, and German chocolate cake was prepared by Bob Moore, Jody Moore, Ben Carpenter, and Debbie Carpenter. Thank you so much! Bob Moore expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the Fidget Apron, Fidget Mat, and pillowcase we gave him for his mother in Louisiana before she died. He also gave Fidget Mats to his mother’s friends at the memory-care facility. He shared a Fidget Mat with his sister who has started a Fidget Mat group at her church in Louisiana. Bob’s words and prayer were encouraging and uplifting. That kind of feedback makes everyone in Threads of HOPE want to do more to help others.

A Fidget Mat is a 20” x 20” mat embellished with items that provide sensory and tactile stimulation for restless or "fidgety" hands of someone with Alzheimer's or related Dementias. Threads of Hope has been requested to make Fidget Mats for Arkansas Hospice Inpatient facilities, Hospice patients in Home Care, and in memory care facilities. In addition, Fidget Mats have been requested by individuals who have a loved one or friend who has dementia. We can personalize the mats with items of clothing, neckties, hankies, or jewelry provided by the family member. The Mats are for individual use and do not have to withstand cleaning by a commercial laundry. To keep up with the demand, in January 2020 Threads of HOPE will form another subgroup dedicated to making Fidget Mats.

Thanksgiving is near.

I look forward to giving thanks in special ways this month as we remember how wonderfully God has blessed

us in the Balboa family and us as individuals. We rejoice and give thanks, so we have thousands of reasons

to sing His praise and mercy and grace.

Can you believe it?

There’s only 4 weeks until our Christmas Cantata Presentation of “The Greatest Story Ever Told!”

Our cantata will be offered twice; at 9:30 am and 3 pm on Dec. 8 the 2nd Sunday in December. Our Bible

Study Classes are encouraged to have a class Christmas fellowship in your classrooms after the 9:30 am

presentation. There will not be a contemporary service that day as they will be joining us in sharing this great

story through music and media at both services. We encourage most of you to make your plans to attend the

3 pm service with friends, family, and guests. We will be offering a cookie fellowship following the 3 pm

service which was such a big hit with attendees last year. Christmas is a great time to share Christ with our

community. One way to do that is to get some of the “Complimentary Tickets” we have printed and

personally invite your neighbors and unchurched friends to attend.

I thank the 66 choir members and 14 orchestra people and all the media, publicity, and decoration people in

advance for the time you have put in till then in preparing this beautiful presentation for our people in

church and the entire community.

Would you help us advertise? Please share the concert on your facebook pages and place the “tickets” in

conspicuous places around the village for us.

Operation Christmas Child

Remember to get and fill your shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. Our goal

this year is 750 filled shoeboxes. Collection and Dedication date is November 24.

You can pick up brochures at the church that give ideas about what to include in

your box. Some things you might include are toys, hygiene items, and school

supplies. Remember that toothpaste, liquids, candy, food, breakable items, or

war-related items are not allowed.

Also, remember that if you cannot shop for a box, or you would like to make a

donation to fill extra boxes, you can write a check to Balboa Baptist Church and write

Shoeboxes on the memo line, and the Missions Committee will shop for you.

Remember that every filled shoebox is an opportunity to share the Gospel. Come and

join us at our Packing Parties on October 31 and

November 12 at 1:00 PM in room 115 of Fellowship Hall.

November is a special time of Thanksgiving and we, who work in the Library, are thankful for

gifts of books that are new to the church library. Two that I would like to tell you about come from

the writings of Charles Stanley. One is Courageous Faith (copyright 2016). In the Foreward of

this book, Andy Stanley tells us that it is not an official biography but it chronicles his dad’s biggest

life lessons within the context of the story of his life. It can be found in the biography section.

A second book is Standing Strong (copyright 2017). In this book Dr. Stanley guides us as we

examine and shape what we believe, so that we can live strong, with confidence, hope and an

assurance that when our convictions are based on God’s truths, we can weather any storm as we

hold tight to Him. It can be found in the 231 section of nonfiction.

If you enjoy biographies, I would like to point out just a few that we have in your library. An older

one that you might find interesting is Fanny Crosby, one of the greatest hymn writers of all time.

Also, two others who are from the Christian Music Family are Gloria Gaither and Sandi Patty. We

also have Ruth and Billy Graham, Sam Walton, and Chuck Yeager just to mention a few. From the

world of politics we have Jimmy Carter, Mike Huckabee, Barbara and George W. Bush, Gerald

Ford, Lyndon Johnson, Nancy and Ronald Reagan. From the world of sports you will find Drew

Brees, Tom Landry, Tim Tebow, Bobby Bowden, and Pat Summerall. Biographies are found in the

middle of the right hand wall as you enter the library. Come in and see what might interest you.

If biographies do not appeal to you, there are many areas to search out. Books can encourage

us to learn, dream, agree, disagree, laugh, cry and bring to the surface all other emotions that we

have within us. If books do not draw you into the library, we have DVD’s, a few books on tape and

Bible Study Kits. It is your library, located in the same hall as the prayer room and parlor.

PAUL & KAREN LASHLEE

Karen Lashlee was born and raised in Benton Arkansas.

Paul was born in Malvern and moved to Benton when he was in

6th grade. They went to high school together, but did not date.

When Karen graduated, she went to work for Blue Cross-Blue

Shield handling Medicare. When she was 21, she accepted

Christ at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Benton. During this

time Paul was working for a steel company and he had been

praying for the Lord to provide him with a Christian wife. The

day after Karen became a Christian, Paul called her for a date. They dated 3 months before

they were married and that was 43 years ago. They believe it was God answering his prayer.

In 1987, Paul formed his own steel company (All Steel Construction) in Benton which

provides steel for construction to hospitals, shopping centers, and even Bass Pro Shops. Karen

became a full-time mom with Rebecca, Jeremy, and Jessica who also still all live in the

Benton/Bryant area. When the children got out of school, Karen became the bookkeeper for

Paul’s steel company. Also competing for their time are four grandchildren with a set of twins

on the way, which are a joy in their life.

They both love to travel primarily on road trips and are avid Razorback fans. Paul is a

several-times-a-week golfer. They have been very active in their previous churches, with Paul

being the Commander of a 120 Awana group and the teacher of a young married Sunday

School class. After moving to HSV five years ago and driving back to Benton for church

during that time, they decided to find a church closer to home. They visited BBC and enjoyed

the sermons, music, and friendly reception from the members so much they decided to join.

BURL & KATHY HUDSON

The Hudsons moved to the Village from Osceola, Arkansas, where they attended the

Osceola Baptist Church. They were very active members of the church and both taught

Sunday School for a number of years.

Burl earned his Civil Engineering degree from the University of Arkansas. Due to his

employment as a Civil Engineer, they lived in several cities, from Lawrence, Kansas, to

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Harrison, Arkansas and finally to Osceola, to name a few. Burl

worked in several positions throughout his career, namely at the Gas Company in Kansas and

the Arkansas Highway Department. They lived in Osceola for thirty-three years and moved to

Hot Springs Village in February 2018.

They have been married for fifty-seven years. They are the proud parents of three

children: Bryon, the oldest, who lives in Dallas, and Kevin and Karen, their twins, who live in

Hot Springs. They are the loving grandparents of six grandchildren and one adopted

grandchild. They enjoy spending time with their family and like the idea that they now live

closer together.

Burl spent his adult life employed as a Civil Engineer. After moving to Osceola, Kathy

owned her own Beauty Shop and worked in Adult Education for a while.

They enjoy the Village and are involved in some of the church’s activities. They have

joined the Impact Bible Study class.

Burl likes working with his hands doing carpentry-type work and enjoys fishing. He is

looking forward to having fun checking out the Village’s many lakes. Kathy has a Sewing

Room and delights in making things from scratch. She also likes working outside in the

garden.

They are rapidly gaining new friends at Balboa and look forward to an enjoyable future

in the church.
