You’re never too old to play! This experiential workshop will demonstrate how diverse adults can benefit from play therapy interventions through a case study and break out groups. Although play therapy is typically recognized as a treatment approach for children, recent research indicates that adults can also benefit from the therapeutic powers of play. In the Western world there is growing support of play as integral to the development and maintenance of mental and emotional well-being across the lifespan. If incorporated into treatment, play therapy can provide an avenue to increase self-awareness through a safe medium to process their thoughts, feelings and issues. Distancing, mastery and projection, reenacting life experiences, self-actualization, and an increase in emotional expression are examples of benefits adults may acquire through play therapy (Murphy, 2010). Creative play therapy techniques also offer a medium to overcome cultural barriers when working with diverse populations.
