Sunset Slope Quilters Newsletter

President’s Corner

Summer is really going fast, or so it seems to me.

But then every year seems to speed by faster that the one

before did. I am working hard to accomplish some of those

goals that I set back in January. How are you all doing on

your projects?

Are you getting excited about the Garage Sale after

the meeting in August? This would be a great time to clean

out and organize your sewing area(s). We all have things

that we no longer need or want but those might be the very

thing(s) that someone else needs. Let Kris Murphy know

that you want a table at our sale. Table rental fee goes to

SSQ and you get to keep the money from your sales. If you

don’t have enough for a table, maybe you would like to do-

nate them to be sold at the SSQ table.

Don’t forget the CQC meeting on August 24th at 10:00

am at ALC. Everyone is encouraged to attend and there are

still spaces available in the class on August 25th with Sue

Hickman. Remember to make a pincushion as a favor to

give to those attending.

Life is full of choices for each of us every day.

CHOOSE TO:

Love rather than Hate

Heal rather than Wound

Encourage rather than Criticize

Be grateful rather than Resentful

Bless rather than Stress

But most importantly ...

Give rather than Take.

What talent/ability do you have to give to make SSQ

grow and improve? We can only reach our potential

when everyone is active and involved. Doing your

part by serving as an officer for 2020 is how you can

GIVE rather than take.

Great Deals! Date: August 14 Time: About 10:30 to noon What: Members’ Garage/Excess Stuff Sale The sale is shaping up nicely. I’ve heard of sewing tables, sewing machines, etc., for sale. Cheryl Phillips will even have a couple tables of closeouts, and Gina Gust will be back with her great variety. A great time to stock up on more fabric and supplies! Please come and peruse the wide variety of stuff we are sure to have. Let all your sewing friends know. This would also be an especially good opportuni-ty for someone new to quilting. Come buy something fun!

It was very comforting to receive your get well cards and phone calls after my recent kidney surgery. Thank you so much! This was totally a surprise to me and a bit scary. I am recovering slowly each day getting in walks and drinking plenty of water. Time is the healer. I hope to see you all soon. Marion Biersdorf

Tips by Char

You can’t live a positive life with a negative mind.

When using batiks which side is the right side? During a quilt challenge I was participating in, the instructor related this tip. Pick up the fabric, e.g. a square, hold the fabric at 2 diagonal corners and slightly pull. The fabric will curl to the wrong side of the batik fabric. The right or wrong side of batiks usually does not matter, but if it is important to you or due to your quilt de-sign using the right side consistently makes a difference you now can determine right from wrong. (I assume you will remember this tip!)

Be kind to your fellow workshop attendees and include a small box of unscented dryer sheets in your BSK (basic sewing kit). If you are using fusible products and accidently coat the iron or the ironing board cover with the fusible, iron a dryer sheet using STEAM to remove the fusible from the iron and the ironing board cover. (Of course, you should also have a Teflon applique sheet with you so you don’t have to clean up your accidental mess. Just saying!)

Happy quilting!

BLOCK OF THE MONTH

Our BOM for 2019…block 7 is called “Modern Lady’s Fan”. It’s an easy block that will keep you “cool” in this heat! Don’t forget to bring your finished block so you can show off your great work! As usual, the directions to each block will be emailed to members. It will not be published in the newsletter or on SSQ’s web page. No email? No problem! Those members without email may pick up the directions at each meeting. Please re-member to pick up your blocks at the end of each meeting. If you have any questions for the past or the present BOM feel free to contact one of us. A special shout out goes to Rachel Fry for helping me set up and show our new block. “Vanna” had more important things to attend to than being bossed by me! J Thoughts and prayers go out to Debbie for a quick re-turn to quilting! Happy Quilting! Jewell and Debbie
