On behalf of the Sunshine Coast District Bowls Association, we welcome all bowlers and visitors to our 2014 Winter Bowls Carnival. We look forward to catching up with all those who are returning for this year’s carnival and to new entrants and visitors. We continue to be impressed by the calibre of bowlers playing in these events which are arranged to cater for bowlers at all levels so that the chances of doing well are enhanced as much as possible. We are continually trying new events and to repeat those that have been popular in the recent past. Feedback from past participants have helped us to bring to you a good mix of events and we are sure you will enjoy each and every event you enter.

The Sunshine Coast clubs hosting the various events are some of the best clubs in Queensland and their greens should be at their finest during the carnival season. A number of clubs within our District will also be hosting their own carnivals and details are included in this publication. A new event this year is being hosted by some of our Hinterland clubs and we wish them much success. The Hinterland has much to offer and we are sure that those who visit this region will enjoy the experience.

We encourage all bowlers to support the many events and enjoy the hospitality of the clubs they visit and we are sure you will be most welcome.

We are grateful to our many sponsors, particularly those mentioned in this booklet, including our major sponsor ‘The Sunshine Coast Council’ and if you are doing any sightseeing we commend the council tourism body to you as a valuable source of information and assistance.

Wherever you choose to play bowls during the carnival season we wish you success and enjoyment.

Geoff Osborne President SCDMBA

Welcome to this year’s Sunshine Coast Winter Bowls Carnival here on the beautiful Sunshine Coast.

This carnival is now in its 52nd anniversary and I hope you have a fun filled time on the Sunshine Coast.

For those of you who have travelled from interstate and overseas, I would encourage you to take the time to see everything this region has to offer, from the beauty of the hinterland to our pristine beaches.

There are many attractions to visit, fine food and wines to taste, shopping and markets, an abundance of great places to stay and plenty of friendly banter with proud locals who call this place home.

Good luck, and good bowling.

I hope to see you back again next year.

Mayor Mark Jamieson

From the spectacular coloured sand cliffs in the north, to the iconic Glasshouse

Mountains in the south, the Sunshine Coast is a very special, natural place.

The Sunshine Coast A Naturally Refreshing Destination

On the Sunshine Coast, the only thing more refreshing than the water is the lifestyle. With its endless beaches, lush rainforests and easy smiles, it’s a place where you feel like a local from the moment you arrive, a place where you can forget everything – and that feeling’s unforgettable.

From the first game played in the region dating back to 1936, the Sunshine Coast is one of Queensland’s most popular bowling destinations. Our popular haven for lawn bowlers offers facilities and venues across the coast, and

a range of social and competitive carnivals to appeal to beginners and competitive bowlers alike.

Whether it’s a trip to the Sunshine Coast with fellow members from your local club, a group of friends, a loved one, or your family; it’s not only a hub for bowls lovers but it also offers plenty to see and do as a destination. It is home to an endless number of exceptional attractions, activities and events.

Our popular haven for lawn bowlers offers facilities and venues across the coast,

and a range of social and competitive carnivals to appeal to beginners and

competitive bowlers alike.

Take some time-out from the greens and discover...

• Enter shopping heaven at one of our local, hinterland or seaside markets.

• Get up close and personal with one of only six retired F-111 retired fighter jets in the country at Queensland Air Museum in Caloundra

• Have a day at the races at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club.

• Experience the films of yesteryear with a silent movie in Pomona.

• Hire a boat or take a cruise and explore the Maroochy River, the Noosa River, or the Pumicestone Passage Marine Park to experience the beauty and wildlife.

• Explore the gardens. Maroochy Botanic Gardens are set on 112 hectares off the Tanawha Tourist Drive, and the Noosa Botanic Gardens have eight hectares of native and exotic plants plus a zen garden, lily pond, and fern house.

• Travel along the Pumicestone Passage abord an amphibious vehicle with LARC About Tours

• Pull on some fancy socks, and hit one of 17 golf courses in the region.

• Relax, revitalise and refresh at a day spa, wellness centre or health retreat.

Rest, relax, revitalise and reconnecton the Sunshine Coast Hinterland

NEW HINTERLAND MIXED FOURS

Page 19: Sunshine Coast Bowls Carnival 2014

NambourWith a comfortable blend of shopping, business, health,

education, events & entertainment, Nambour offers a

laidback lifestyle with a strong community focus.

As a town, Nambour is the backbone of the Coast, the

quiet achiever, going about its business without fanfare,

slightly under-the-radar. Nambour has two bowling clubs,

Nambour Heights and Nambour.

YandinaThis is the famous ‘Ginger Town’ of the Sunshine Coast

hinterland, which boasts some of the most beautiful country

in Queensland. Yandina lies just to the north of Nambour,

the centrally-located retail and service town for the central

Sunshine Coast hinterland. This area is extremely rich in

natural rainforest parks and reserves.

WoombyeWoombye used to be called Cobb’s Camp due to the fact

that it was a staging post for the Cobb & Co coaches.

Woombye is home to luscious sub-tropical fruits, and the

popular Macadamia nut. The macadamia, of course, used to

be known as the Queensland Nut.

MapletonSituated in the heart of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, the

scenic drive to Mapleton from Maleny, taking in Montville

and Flaxton, is one of the most scenic on the Sunshine

Coast. Throughout this beautiful district, art and craft

galleries abound, along with potteries, antique shops

and museums

PalmwoodsSet in the heart of an arts and craft hub which typifies

Queensland’s Sunshine Coast hinterland, the small rural

town of Palmwoods is at the crossroads of the region’s

tourist network. Set in a mosaic of avocado, custard

apples and pawpaw orchards, orange groves, and banana

plantations, Palmwoods is only a few kilometres south of

Nambour. It’s within comfortable driving distance of Buderim

and the charming Blackall Range villages of Maleny,

Montville and Mapleton.
