I think just about everyone has a hero, idol, or someone to look up to and respect. I certainly have someone I think is amazing, Bryce Wisdom. Bryce is a junior at Judson High School who is one amazing young man. This past spring his life changed dramatically as the phrase, ?fighting for your life?, took on a new and profound meaning. Bryce was diagnosed with Stage 2 Kidney Cancer. He spent last spring recovering from surgery that removed his right kidney, which effectively ended his football career. He weathered a grueling battery of 11 chemotherapy treatments in 19 weeks and was ready to live life cancer free. But that was before he received the news just last week that cancer was found in his liver as well as the spot where his right kidney was removed. When you see Bryce and hear him talk, you see his courage, determination, and will to fight like never before. This young man knows what it means to fight for his life? as a baby he was even born with the challenges of being premature. There are times when as adults, we forget how precious life is and we forget that we cannot take life or our blessings for granted. Bryce has reminded me of the need to be thankful and appreciate the blessings in life. We all fall into the trap of negativity and wrestle with the ability to enjoy life and give 100%. However, when I see Bryce doing it, there is no reason why we all can't be our best selves. Bryce has courage, does not give up, enjoys every moment, and knows the importance of loving, living, and laughing because nothing is promised. I ask that you join me in praying for Bryce and his family. Bryce, I want you to know that we are praying for you. We are all behind you! WE LOVE AND SUPPORT YOU. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your journey and allowing us to learn from you what it means to be a hero! You are teaching us so much, and for that, we will always be thankful to have you as a Judson Rocket. THOUGHTS FROM DR. BALLDear Judson ISD Team:

Hope each of you had a great weekend.

JISD 's Top Business Par tner s H onored

School districts need the support of not only parents and students, but the business world as well. There is a group of business partners that have been long-time supporters of Judson ISD. These are organizations that have helped the district and our students at so many levels. JISD, in partnership with TASB, the Texas Association of School Boards, wanted to pause for a moment to say thank you to these businesses that have shown the most support over time. The board and district administration hosted a special reception at the Culinary Arts Dining Room at the ERC that included some delicious hors d'oeuvres and wonderful music from a small group of Wagner Orchestra students. The businesses were also formally recognized at the regular meeting of the Judson ISD Board of Trustees. Judson Education Foundation President and Converse Mayor Al Suarez was on hand as well to offer a special thank you and a commemorative coin from the City of Converse as a token of appreciation.

Remembering the tragic events of September 11, 2001, is difficult for many. But there were many individuals to remember from that infamous day that represent a reason for unity in our country. One of those who died on that day was 1979 Judson graduate LTC Karen Wagner who was serving in the Pentagon when it was attacked. Students and administration from Wagner High School and Judson ISD gathered at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery to honor her life and sacrifice. The ceremony included thoughts from Wagner students and Principal Mary Duhart-Toppen. It concluded with a traditional wreath-laying and the playing of taps by Wager Band members.

JECA's Voelcker ScholarsMiranda Gonzales, Victoria Davila, and

Gabriella Montemayor, students at Judson

Early College Academy, were three of fifteen

high school students from the entire San

Antonio area accepted into the Voelcker

Biomedical Research Academy (VBRA) in their

respective cohorts at the University of Texas

Health Science Center San Antonio

(UTHSCSA).

The VBRA is a  2-year summer research

program lasting for 7 weeks each summer.

The VBRA provides 15 San Antonio rising

juniors with a rigorous biomedical research,

educational and college preparatory

experience.

Str ategical ly Plann ing For T h e Fu tu r e

Planning in a strategic way is a critical element of success. Whether you run a business, a school district, or simply want to overcome a challenge in life. Judson ISD is coming together to plan out the next five years in a thoughtful and intentional way. The Steering Committee recently met in the Board Room to really distill down what some of the big issues are now

and which are emerging that will be pivotal in JISD being successful and moving forward. It was a mix of community members and JISD staff and students that offered their unique perspective on where we are and where we can go.

It was a stimulating and revealing chain of discussions that will help the Action Committee see what the next steps will be and how they can be accomplished successfully. We want to thank everyone for their contributions and in the coming weeks and months you'll be hearing more and more about what the future looks like for Judson ISD.
