  • 2On March 14th, our office joined San Francisco Public Works and hundreds of volunteers to clean and green the Sunset District and celebrate Arbor Day. Vol-unteers planted trees along Judah Street, Taraval Street and Sunset Boulevard; they weeded, pruned and planted trees at La Playa Park near Judah and La Playa Streets; replaced dead and dying trees at many locations including along Great Highway near Rivera Street; and also planted new drought tolerant landscaping along Sun-set Boulevard near Yorba Street. Drought tolerant landscaping will continue to be planted along Sunset Boulevard for the next few months and will cover the median from Yorba to Rivera Streets.

We thank everyone who joined us on Arbor Day to beautify and clean our neighbor-hood. Special thanks to San Francisco Public Works staff for organizing such a great event in the Sunset District and for investing in the improvement of our community.

In March, we celebrated our Irish heritage here in the Outer Sunset by learning how expert baker Jenn Dearden over at Andytown Coffee Roasters makes their famous soda bread. We ate delicious Irish cheeses from JB Rumburg of Velo Fromage that were perfectly paired with various types of soda bread. We were also instructed on the art of Irish Dance from Sharon Whelan MacSweeney of the Whelan-Kennelly Academy of Irish Dance. This month, do some spring cleaning and learn about orga-nization from Christina Ardemis, expert organizer with over 25 years of experience. Then get your hands dirty and learn about garden weeds, what they mean, and how to keep them at bay with the Far Out West Garden.

  • 3On March 19th, dozens of Sunset District residents joined our office along with the San Francisco Planning Department, the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) and architecture firm, Perkins + Will, to discuss temporary in-vestments to the Francis Scott Key Annex yard. The SFUSD-owned site is current-ly being painted, however, the focus of the meeting was to discuss improvements that can be made to the yard surrounding the building, which is located at 1351 42nd Avenue and Judah Street.

Pavement to Parks is a program through the Planning Department that seeks to quickly and inexpensively convert underutilized space into places that enhance gathering space for the community and foster neighborhood interactions. These re-imagined spaces are considered temporary and easily reversible. For more infor-

mation about Pavement to Parks, visit http://pavementtoparks.sfplanning.org.

At this meeting, residents, neighborhood groups, and community leaders shared great ideas. Youth from Sunset Youth Ser-vices (SYS) expressed their interest in keeping and improving the basketball courts. Other residents wanted an area for their children to practice riding their bikes, and many liked the idea of expanding community garden space in cooperation with the Far Out West Garden (located on Judah and 43rd).

If you would like to share your ideas for the space, please contact our office at (415) 554-7460 or email [email protected]. We can also send you a copy of the ideas taken down at the meeting. The next planning meeting will be held on Thursday, May 14th at 6:30pm at the Francis Scott Key Annex, located at 1351 42nd Avenue.

    DBI and Planning Department Workshop

At our second annual workshop, staff from the Department of Building Inspec-tion (DBI) and the San Francisco Planning Department were available to answer questions about city codes, permits, home remodeling, home expansion, short-term rentals and in-law units. Residents made one-on-one appointments with planners and DBI staff to find out about their individual project questions. People in atten-dance asked questions ranging from legalizing non-compliant structures and rooms, permits, and design guidelines. Many were surprised to learn that most permits can be approved over the counter and do not require a long process.

We would like to thank the Planning Department and the Department of Building Inspection for coming out to the Sunset District and meeting with individuals for personal residential questions. For more information about the Planning Department, visit www.sf-planning.org and for more information about the Department of Building Inspection, visit www.sfdbi.org.

Making it Happen for Womens Health on International Womens Day

We had great attendance for our event celebrating International Womens Day in partnership with North East Medical Services (NEMS) and Shanti Project! Along with my Sunset Sisters, Board of Equalization member Fiona Ma and Assessor-Recorder Carmen Chu, we helped Make It Happen for womens health and encour-aged women to access the services they need to lead healthy lives by offering free health screenings and information.

On March 27th, our office joined the San Francisco Public Utilities Commis-sion (SFPUC) and many Sunset District residents for a tour of San Francis-cos sewer infrastructure, with a focus on the Groundwater Supply Project. The tour brought residents to the largest solar power installation at Sunset Reservoir, and San Franciscos wastewater treatment plants.

The Groundwater Supply Project is part of the Citys water diversification pro-gram, and will use local groundwater from the Westside Groundwater Basin as one of the new supply sources. This tour was designed to provide residents the opportunity to learn more about this program and ask questions of SFPUC ex-perts. • 5In November 2014, President Obama announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would develop an application process for undocumented parents of U.S. citizens and for undocumented parents of lawful permanent residents (LPRs) to apply and be protected temporarily from deportation under the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA) program. President Obama also announced an expansion of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program for individuals who came to the United States as children. These parents and other individuals may be granted a type of tempo-rary permission to stay in the U.S. called deferred action. These programs are expected to benefit about 5 million people.

While there is currently an injunction placed on these new programs, community advocates anticipate that the ruling will be overturned, and that the new programs should begin later this year.

In the meantime, people can still submit applications for the DACA program under its 2012 guidelines, and others should prepare to apply for expanded DACA and DAPA, when it becomes available, by getting screened for eligibility, collecting required documents, and saving for the $465 application fee. If you would like more information on DACA and DAPA, you may call (415) 896-1701 to contact the Asian Law Caucus, or (415) 274-6750 to contact the Chinese Progressive Association.

Sunset Youth Services recently expanded Upstar Studios, an in-novative recording studio program that offers the opportunity to develop songwriting and audio-recording skills to at-risk youth. In partnership with the San Francisco Juvenile Probation Department, Upstar Studios gives youth at the Juvenile Justice Center in Glen Park the opportunity to explore writing, rapping and engineering their own projects. The program also encourages young people to discover a nurturing community by building relationships with caring adults. The organization has plans to further expand the program by taking Upstar Studios to other local juvenile detention centers such as Log Cabin Ranch in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Through Upstar Studios, Sunset Youth Services has successfully taught valuable vocational skills to young people throughout San Francisco. In a detention-center setting, the program offers young of-

fenders an artistic, positive outlet for feelings of anger, guilt or frustration that can accompany incarceration. For more infor-mation on Sunset Youth Services visit www.sunsetyouthservices.org.

Honoring Kindergarten Teacher Cara Cuper for Womens History Month

It was an honor to recognize Francis Scott Key Elementary School Kinder-garten teacher Cara Cuper as the District 4 honoree for Womens History Month at the Board of Supervisors meeting on March 3rd. During the 2013-2014 academic school year, Cara faced the daunting challenge of providing a cohesive and consistent education to one of her students, Olive Diamond, who was diag-nosed with cancer during her second semester of Kindergarten.

With the assistance of technology and SFUSDs Homebound Education pro-gram, Cara and Olives family were able to provide lessons and instruction to Olive while she recuperated at home. Thanks to the amazing amount of coordi-nation between her parents and her teacher, Olive successfully advanced to the first grade. Caras passion and dedication to ensuring Olives continued educa-tion has been a role model for all of Francis Scott Keys teachers.

Three juvenile African penguin chicks are the newest residents of the California Academy of Sciences. After a few months of behind-the-scenes bonding, these new chicks made their public debut on March 11th. Marcus, the youngest sibling who hatched in December 2014, is named for Marcus Island, one of 24 islands off the coast of South Africa with breeding colonies of African penguins. Marcus is the fourth chick to hatch in the Academys new building as part of a Species Survival Plan. The male and female pair, hatched in November 2014, were given names chosen by survey in March. The females new name is Nori after the Japanese word for the edible seaweed species of the red algae genus Pyropia. The males name is Bert, after the character played by actor Dick Van Dyke, who famously danced with animated penguins in the Walt Disney film, Mary Pop-pins.

Visit the new penguin chicks at the Academy soon, or check in on the colony via live Penguin Cam at http://www.calacademy.org/explore-science/live-penguin-cams.

California Academy of Sciences Welcomes Three New Penguin Chicks

2015 marks the fourth year of the California drought. This March, California officials approved a package of water conserva-tion restrictions that include:

Banning outdoor watering for 48 hours following a rain; Preventing restaurants from providing water unless requested; Limiting towel replacement at hotels; and Requiring urban water suppliers to limit the number of days per week customers can water outdoor ornamental land-scaping.

These regulations require local water agencies that do not already have set limits to call for a limit of watering outdoor land-scaping to only two days per week. The Bay Area agencies that will need to set this limit include the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), the Marin Municipal Water District and the Contra Costa Water District.

Though Governor Jerry Brown has called for a 20% reduction in water use statewide, water customers still have a long way to go in meeting that goal. The SFPUC has many resources available on water conservation. Find their Residential Water Conservation Checklist, Water-Wise Gardening for San Francisco Guidebook, and outdoor signage including Brown is the new Green signs to tell neighbors why your landscaping may be looking a little dry these days. Find all of these resources and more at http://sfwater.org/index.aspx?page=839.

We cannot predict exactly when a disaster or emergency will occur. However, we can take measures to prepare for an emergency that will help prevent damage and loss to our community. Our office will provide helpful information and resources on emergency preparedness so that District 4 residents may take precautionary steps from www.sf72.org.

If you are one of the 65% of people who rent in San Francisco, renters insurance can be a safety net for you in the event of a fire, earthquake, or other disaster that may affect your personal property. Although landlords are required, by their mort-gage contract, to maintain insurance for the accidents that may occur on the property, they are not required to insure items that belong to the tenant. Renters insurance covers items within your home, but may also cover items you take out of your home, such as your personal laptop, if it is stolen.

To determine how much coverage is right for you, you can begin by compiling a detailed list of your most valuable belongings, then go through this list with an experienced agent, who can ensure you receive the right amount of coverage.

Discuss your needs with an experienced insurance agent, to determine the type of insurance policy that is right for you. For a list of helpful information on renters insurance, visit http://financialhighway.com/10-things-to-know-about-renters-insur-ance/.
