Developing excellence in teaching and learning by disseminating good practice using a teaching TV staff development tool

Experiment objectives:

• Identify lecturers/assessors who achieved excellence during the 2011/12 and 2012/13 observation process.

• Capture best practice in differentiation, formative assessment and improving literacy (video).

• Pilot the staff development with a control group of lecturers.• Roll-out the training across the whole Grŵp.• Develop a format for disseminating good practice.• Review the impact on teaching and learning in the 2013/14

observation cycle.

The Pilot Group and Role of the Teaching and Learning Mentor

• Sports and Public Services

• Best practice videos and other workshop materials in formative assessment and differentiation trialled with teaching staff in the faculty

• Mentor conducted peer observations and supported teaching staff in experimenting with new teaching methods

• Evaluation sessions lead by Mentor on effectiveness of the experiment with both teaching staff and learners

• Very positive feedback from all staff with clear impact in the classroom

• Mentor worked closely with T&L Manager in planning the whole Grŵp training

Outcomes• Formative assessment workshops delivered by mentors to 516

teaching staff across the Grŵp• Differentiation workshops delivered by mentors to 618 teaching staff

across the Grŵp• Literacy marking video guide available to all • Teaching and Learning Portal developed and accessible to all staff

Impact

Differentiation: 12% increase in excellent judgements awarded

Formative assessment: 8% increase in excellent judgements awarded

Literacy development: 16% increase in excellent judgements awarded

Strengths

• Full ‘buy in’ from senior management

• Use of pilot group• Mentors delivering targeted and

bespoke training across 12 college sites

Weaknesses

• Video editing process• The observation cycle ends in

February making the analysis of the judgements awarded difficult in the time allocated for the experiment
