INTRODUCTION:

A description of the surface "DEEPEM" survey method and the borehole Pulse EM method is enclosed with this report. Since the type of mineralization in the target area had the possibility of being a poor to moderate conductor the pulse transmitter used the "fast" 0.5 ms ramp time in order to increase the high frequency content of the trans mitted signal. This would result in the survey being sensi tive to zones of low conductivity. Transmitter loops 1,2,3 and 4 were large having dimensions of 800 m x 400 m. They produce a strong energizing field that would enable the survey to detect a conductive body the size of Falconbridge's Winston Lake deposit down to a depth of 200 to 300 meters. The smaller Tx 5 with dimensions of 200 m x 400 m was placed east of DDH's 86-1 and 86-2 to make sure no conductors would be missed in the vicinity of the drill holes. For the borehole survey two transmitter loops were used placed around the collars of the boreholes. A field report by the operator Richard Kurtz is also enclosed.

INTERPRETATION:

In the area adjacent to DDK 86-1 and DDH 86-3 several very weak, small conductive zones were detected that are marked on the plan map. These zones would normally not be

Page 3: SURF DEEPEM & BOREHOLE PULSE EM SUR · follow up hole ZQ-5 was drilled down-dip of ZO-4 and intersected 1.11 Cu and 19.11 Zn over 2.1m. A large mineralized sheet of massive sulphides

marked as anomalous since they are within the noise limit of the survey. They are real since they are detected on both the horizontal and vertical components and are picked up on more than one line. They are only detected from Tx l on channel l using a very early channel l position. They do not form a continuous conductor but instead represent small patches of-poor "conductivity within a zone itThey^ are jvtooX :. small to be(considered as a target area 'for furtherKdrilling^ The borehole survey of 86-1 and 86-2 fail to detect any- J signs of conductivity. The channel l sample in the borehole ;|| survey is moved slightly out from the Tx l channel l and M therefore the very weak zones detected from Tx l are not seen by the borehole survey. If

A zone of moderate conductivity is. detected from L US, Q+60W to L13S, 0+25W. The surface anomaly is picking up bothf the upper and lower edges of the conductive body therefore W it has limited depth extent. This is confirmed by the borehole survey of DDH 86-4 which produces a strong IN-HOLE, lower ' edge type anomaly. The hole cuts the conductor at a depth of 125 m down the hole at a point approximately 40 m from the lower edge of the body. Model studies from Woods-Queens Uni versity thesis are enclosed for a comparison - C-77 shows the hole intersecting the conductor 100* from its lower edge, C-78 at 150'. The obtained anomaly shape is between two. The survey of 86-5 detects an OFF-HOLE conductor at a depth of K; 140 m down the hole - distance to the edge approximately 45/m. There is no positive shoulder to the anomaly at the bo t tom iS; of the hole again indicating a limited depth extent for the?f conductor. The edge would be the southern and lower side of|f the conductor intersected by DDH 86-4. ^; ",;S

No other conductors are detected by the surface W "DEEPEM" survey. The grid area covered can be considered ~* thoroughly explored for conductive sulphide deposits to a depth of 200 meters. No further drill targets were identifiedby the surface and borehole surveys. vi'

In this survey procedure a

pattern of equi-sized transmitter

loops, usually 5 in number are

laid out on surface and the

hole is surveyed from each one

by running a receiver probe down

the hole, Figure 9. The

transmitter loops are positioned to provide a wide variation of

primary field directions in the possible target area. The

changes in amplitude, shape and sign of the anomalies obtained

are used to determine the direction, distance, size and to some

extent the shape of the conductive body (Woods, 1975; Woods and

Crone, 1980; Dyck and West, 1994).

This case history is from a borehole Pulse EM survey

carried out by Corporation Falconbridge Copper in 1982, at their

Winston Lake property in northern Ontario. The property

contained a small (180,000 tons) , mined out, zinc deposit and

a geological setting that Falconbridge considered highly

favourable for further mineralization (Simmons, 1983). Surface

geophysics including Max-Min, VLF and low-powered (500 watt)

pulse EM (DEEPEM) produced no significant anomalous targets.

Page 5: SURF DEEPEM & BOREHOLE PULSE EM SUR · follow up hole ZQ-5 was drilled down-dip of ZO-4 and intersected 1.11 Cu and 19.11 Zn over 2.1m. A large mineralized sheet of massive sulphides

Detailed mapping and geochemical suiveys outlined a zone of

intense alteration. Four drill holes explored this

favourable area to a depth of over 200 meters but intersected

only 6m of minor disseminated mineralization and no massive

mineralization. A borehole survey was carried out down these

holes prior to the planned continuation of the drill program.

The borehole survey results from DDH 20-4 are shown

in Figure 10. Five, 100m x 100m transmitter loops were used

as shown in the plan map. A strong, large "edge" type anomaly

is obtained centered at 2-*' down the hole. At this location

the hole intersected a few millimeters of sulphide

mineralization. The borehole survey profiles are all similar

in shape indicating a sheet like hotly. The reversal in sign

of the anomaly from the early to late time channels is a

classic edge type response. The few millimeters of sulphide

cut in the hole must lie at the very edge of a large

conductive sheet. Since both north and south transmitter loop

responses are similar in amplitude the sheet must be equally

continuous along strike in both these directions. The

geological dip is known to be approximately 55 0 towards the

east. The key question is now whether the sheet continues

up-dip towards the west or down-dip towards the east. The lack

of surface geophysical responses supported the down-dip

Page 6: SURF DEEPEM & BOREHOLE PULSE EM SUR · follow up hole ZQ-5 was drilled down-dip of ZO-4 and intersected 1.11 Cu and 19.11 Zn over 2.1m. A large mineralized sheet of massive sulphides

- ' ; /v

The anomaly obtained from the west Tx loop is cbmpletel;^

reversed in sign and much reduced in amplitude. Using

Macnae's (1980) primary field direction curves, Figure 11,

we see that the primary field from the west Tx loop is almost

null coupled to a downward dipping conductor. This field at

depth, would energize the body from its upper surface, not

the bottom, reversing the sign of the anomalous response as

obtained in the survey. An upward dipping conductor from the

west Tx loop could only produce a strong amplitude anomaly

of opposite sign. For these and other geological reasons the

follow up hole ZQ-5 was drilled down-dip of ZO-4 and intersected

1.11 Cu and 19.11 Zn over 2.1m. A large mineralized sheet of

massive sulphides (zinc, copper) has been drilled off and shaft

sinking ia presently in progress.

UNDERGROUND BOREHOLE PEM SURVEY

UNDERGROUND BOREHOLE

Conductoi

In 1979 Selco Mining

Corporation carried out a

Borehole Pulse EM survey of all

available underground holes at

their South Bay Mine in

Northern Ontario. The resultsv

Fig. 12. from three of the 85 holes

surveyed are shown in this case history. These are extracted

from a paper presented by Laurie Reed, Chief Geophysicist for

Selco, at the GSC-KEGS Borehole Symposium in Toronto (Reed 1983).

The orebody consisted of massive sulphide (chalcopyrite, pyrite

and sphalerite) high grade, lenses with a steep eastward dip

that occured adjacent to a complexly folded rhyolite-quartz

porphyry contact. Drill stations were established at each level

in the mine and a fan of usually horizontal holes were drilled

to explore the contact area. The transmitter loop was laid out

on surface over the hanging wall of the orebody, its dimensions

were 400' x 800', Figure 12. Plastic push rods were used to

advance the probe along the near horizontal holes. Constant

transmitter power and receiver amplifier gains were maintained

throughout the survey to enable comparison of hole to hole

responses. The underground holes were essentially drilled

along strike, rather than the generally perpendicular to

strike orientiation normally hoped for from surface holes.

The EM anomaly pattern obtained from this orientation, where

the hole slides along side a conductive lens, consists of a

cross-over pattern with the cross-over point being near the

centre of the lens. If the lens is on one side of the hole

a plus-minus cross-over is obtained if on the other side a

minus-plus pattern. Direction to the lens is thus clearly

defined by the survey.

The three flat holes, drilled from a station on the

750' level are shown on the plan map, Figure 13. No sulphides

were intersected by the holes.

Borehole SB523 drilled in and out of the contact

zone several times - the survey log of this hole, Figure 14,

obtained two anomalous EM responses from conductors lying

alongside the hole. The weak minus-plus anomaly at 155* is

interpretated as caused by a very small conductive lens occuring

immediately south of the hole. The stronger plus-minus anomaly

centered at 360' is interpretated as a larger body just north

of the hole. The survey along SB533, Figure 15, detects the

larger conductor as lying south of the hole and some distance

from it (in this case 100'). Similarily both conductors are

detected from SB531, Figure 16, as occuring north of the hole.

Page 12: SURF DEEPEM & BOREHOLE PULSE EM SUR · follow up hole ZQ-5 was drilled down-dip of ZO-4 and intersected 1.11 Cu and 19.11 Zn over 2.1m. A large mineralized sheet of massive sulphides

- 3 -

The shape of the secondary dipole field generated by the

larger lens is shown in the plan map. A hole to test this

conductor was drilled upwards from a station on 900' level.

Stringer sulphides and narrow massive veins of pyrite and

some minor sphalerite were intersected as the hole crossed

the contact and passed through the interpreted source.

SURFACE PULSE EM

DEEPEN SURVFY

METHOD DESCRIPTION:

The DEEPEM method uses large square or rectangular tranmsit loops, from 100m x 100m to 500m x 1000m depending on the target depth and geometry.

Survey lines are run outside and perpendicular tp the long side of the loop (1). Length of the survey line is in the order of five times the width of the transmit loop (w).

At each receiver station both the vertical and in-line horizontal components of the time derivative of the secondary magnetic field are measured {dBz/dt and dBx/dt respectively). A third horizontal, cross-line component (dBy/dt) may be measured if the strike of the conductor is not perpendicular to the grid.

Careful consideration should be given to the size and location of the transmit loop prior to commencing a survey. Some knowledge of regional dip, depth of exploration and primary field direction will assist in obtaining optimum coupling with the expected target.

DEEPEM

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES;

The DEEPEM method is ideal for deep targets. It is de signed to detect conductive bodies with dips M5 degrees at depths equivalent to the width (w) of the transmit loop. The geometry of the primary field leaves a "blind zone" for small near surface (within 1/2 w of surface) vertical conductors. Smaller transmit loops (100m2 ) are recommended for such targets.

The DEEPEM method may be used successfully in highly con ductive environments. Ring current effects can be extensively removed with spacial filters to permit a more accurate identi fication and location of conductors. The method is preferred to the MOVING IN-LOOP survey in such a conductive environment when the target is near vertical and narrow or is a zone of multiple conductors.

Mr. Roy SpoonerMining RecorderMinistry of Northern Development and MinesP.O. Box 309Sioux Lookout, Ontario, POV 2TO

/Dear Mr. Spooner:

This report of v/ork includes both surface and borehole geophysics. Thus claims PA846418, 87^384, 87^392 and 37^393 have the borehole and/or deep EM surveys. Each of these claims should be assessed 20 days of assessment from each of the borehole plus the surface survey assessment, (ie. 846^18 - ^0 days for borehole) I enquired locally on how best to file this v/ork. Audrey phoned the Toronto office and advised me to follow this route.

It would be in Cumberland's best interest if this form of geophysics was allowed on the dollar value since it is very similar to the drilling assessment in nature.

Please advise on any necessary changes.

Yours truly,

CUMBERLAND RESOURCES LTD.
