voortman
Voortman has designed, developed and manufactured machinery for steel fabrication and plate
processing related industries for more than 40 years. With international subsidiaries responsible
for sales and service, we are a globally recognized supplier with thousand’s of Voortman systems
installed. We continually develop our equipment range to enable us to keep at the forefront of
technology and in step with any new developments in the market.
Shot blasters
Due to our long history in steel processing machinery manufacturing and our own skilled development
teams we were able to create a line of shot blasters, which are called the VSB Machines.
These high speed machines are designed for standard products such as angles, flats, square tubes,
all sizes of beams and plates up to 3.3 meters wide.
Painting systems
Due to the fact that shot blasting and painting is the ideal combination for steel service centers,
Voortman introduced the shop primer lines along with the line of shot blasters. These painting
lines are equipped with the latest high quality technology and systems to protect our worldwide
environment.
The VP painting system is commonly used in combination with the VSB shot blaster for steel centers
and steel stockholders. Providing surface protection during transport and providing a weldable
primer coating. All the material is ready for loading as soon it comes out of the drying tunnel.

Software
“Voortman’s software VACAM is the most sophisticated and user-friendly machine software in the market.”
Both the pre-heater, shot blaster, painting booth and drying tunnel are centrally controlled by the same Vacam control software by just one operator. the status and active components of all systems are displayed for a clear overview at a glance.
operators have a clear overview of all active components in the manual mode of the system where several settings can be modified instantly. In this way diagnostics can be made very quickly.
Software
The VACAM Control Software is a Voortman development and a result of many years of experience
in the steel machinery business.
Every machine in the Voortman delivery program is equipped with the VACAM Control Software. As
a result all machines have the same “look-and-feel” which significantly reduces the learning curve.

multi SyStem integration
Voortman delivers a total integrated solution called “Multi System Integration” (MSI). Each Voortman
machine is equipped with its own State-of-the-art VACAM Control Software. By interconnecting the
handling systems and the VACAM Software on the machines, virtually one integrated production
system is created.
In a Voortman integrated system all the product buffers and transports like roller conveyors and
cross transports are managed. As a result of this there is no need to manually transport materials
through the production line. The MSI will also make sure that all buffers are used in the most
economical way.
If there are more machines suitable for a certain operation the MSI may decide to reroute products,
this decision is based upon the actual load at the machines (load balancing algorithm).
Another important advantage is that production NC data only needs to be imported once. The MSI
will distribute this automatically to all the machines which are part of the MSI.
the whole system is equipped with additional detectors and sensors, to monitor every operation and motion. this results in a full buffer control displayed in real-time.

the rolls inside the blasting cabinet are from thick hardened steel to make sure they do not wear during the blasting process.
using a cascade plate combined with air flow from the filter unit this system collects good abrasive which it sends back to the abrasive container. Waste abrasive falls into a dust bag, and fine dust goes to the filter unit.
the housing of the blasting cabinet exists out of 3 layers of steel: the main housing is made out of 8 mm (5/16”) mild steel, the inside of the blasting cabinet has an 8 mm (5/16”) manganese steel lining, and the hot-spots have another 10 mm (3/8”) manganese steel protection plate. all layers are bolted from the outside, so they are easy to replace.
a light curtain detects the front and back side of the product(s). therefore the machine opens the valve for the abrasive, only then when there is material. this increases the lifetime of the wear plates.

With noise insulation panels closing down the sides of the VSB1500 and VSB2500 models, the sound level is reduced to less than 85 dB. For the VSB3300 a complete noise chamber surrounding the machine is required.
this option is frequently used on the VSB2500 and VSB3300shot blasters. In case of blasting wide plates the outer turbine angles are adjusted to give maximum blasting power over the total width. In case of blasting beams, which are centrally placed on the conveyor, the outer turbine angles are adjusted to give more blasting power to the middle of the conveyor. a big advantage: Higher speed by smaller width and less wear on the machine.
to prevent shutting down the shot blaster to refill the abrasive container, a separate abrasive container can be placed next to the shot blaster which can be refilled without disturbing the blasting process. a sensor in the main container gives a signal to start the transfer of abrasive between the containers.
the turbines which are used for all Voortman shot blasters are made according to a design used for many years. each turbine set has a separate abrasive valve to start the abrasive flow only when material reaches the turbine, so damage to the machine because of running empty is minimized. each turbine is connected to its motor with flexible couplings supported by double bearings for maximum stability. this reduces the wear of the motor to a minimum. For the VSB3300 belts are used to connect the massive 500 mm (20”) turbines with the motors.
the elevator transports the used abrasive to the separation system. For easy replacement of elevator parts the machine has a push button next to the elevator to rotate the belt manually.
a double screw conveyor brings all the used abrasive to the elevator to be cleaned and re-used.
the brush and blow off unit cleans the material from abrasive after blasting. the height of the brush is automatically adjusted using an infeed light curtain that measures the height of the material.
to blast plates down to 4 mm (5/32”) thickness the following adjustments have to be made to the machines: the abrasive valve has to be controlled to limit the abrasive flow and the turbines are fitted with frequency controllers to lower the speed of the turbines. additional rolls have to be added to prevent bending of the thin plate inside the machine.

all Voortman paint supply systems are suitable for solvent-based as well as water-based paint.
a light barrier is placed in front of the painting system to measure the height of the material, so that the height of the upper paint trolley is adjusted automatically.
all Voortman painting systems are prepared to have a maximum of three separate paint supply systems. these separate systems can be used for multiple colours or different paint types.
an air blower can be installed in front of the pre-heater to remove most water from the material. In this case it is easier for the pre-heater to dry the material. the blower can be set to two different heights.
Installing a pre-heater in front of the shot blaster gives advantages for both blasting as well as painting. By drying the material before blasting the risk of cluttering of abrasive is minimized. the advantage to the painting system is that the painting result is improved and the line speed can be increased. In order to re-use spare energy from the pre-heater inside the drying tunnel a connection pipe is fitted.
the painting system has two paint trolleys of which the drive chains are connected to the same motor. this guarantees a perfectly synchronized movement. the trolleys can be fitted with 3 sets of nozzles to switch between different paint types automatically.
on both sides inside the painting cabin an air intake box is installed, the airflow itself is generated by a large filter unit. the intake boxes circulate the air back and forth a few times to catch most of the larger paint particles, the filter unit takes care of the remaining paint particles.
In order to reduce the waste of paint, material detection sensors mounted on the upper paint trolley look for empty spaces before, after and between the material. If there is no material detected the system does not spray paint.
the inside of the painting cabin is completely layered with special material which makes cleaning of the machine very easy. over the floor and in front of the lights, a roll with transparent plastic film is placed. When turned the dirty plastic is replaced by new clean plastic.
a drying tunnel is installed directly behind the painting machine to dry the paint in just a few minutes with temperatures around 40° c. When the material reaches the end of the tunnel, it is ready to be used immediately. In order not to damage the fresh paint a chain transport is used inside the tunnel instead of rollers. this chain conveyor exists out of t-bars and small supports to reduce contact even further.

The blasting & painting system is generally placed in what we call a “close coupled” configuration.
This counts of course for most surface treatment lines in the market, but why is Voortman’s
philosophy different from any competitor in our field?
Voortman uses one single PC controlled system, to which the pre-heater, shot blaster, painting booth
and drying tunnel can be connected. This enables the line to work as a single machine even though
the system consists of multiple units. Data has to be entered only once, and different speeds can be
used for each process without disturbing the previous or the next batch.

In short: when you look at the layout example above, the operator places the raw material on the
infeed cross transfer, and using the advanced VACAM control software he specifies which material
is in the next batch. After he presses start all the movements of the machines, roller conveyors,
chain transports, and cross transfers are fully automatic!
