The Life and Labour of the People in London

33,000 English pounds

Scientific authority and facts

1880s to World War I

3+Booth wrote the Life and Labor of the People in London which is the first English social survey of large proportions. Booth used his own money to conduct the surveyhis desire to perform the work was based on an almost obsessive need for facts and led the way for American Activists who wanted establish these objective scientific facts to help spread social change.

English and American social surveys were a call during the 1880s to WWI for those who were concerned about the plight of the poor along with a fear that the poor would start a revolution

Booth presented his findings to the Royal Statistical Society in 1889 and was elected president of the society in 1892 and served through 18943Surveying Surveys: United StatesW.E.B. DuBois

Influenced by Booth

Canvassed approximately 10,000 residents

Paul Kellogg

Pittsburgh survey

The survey published six volumes

4+Study was centered on African Americans in Philadephiahis canvas put him in contact with about a quarter of the citys black populationinteresting that the survey included immersing the researcher in the city or area where the survey takes placethe study used census data, historical records, and vital statistics

The Pittsburgh survey as ab effort to provide an inventory and an overview of the state of the citythe volumes include studys on the steel industry, housing, family life, typhoid, child-helping institutions among others

Changing the communitys consciousness was the ultimate aim of many of these surveys4Gallup PollsGeorge Gallup

+George Gallup was born in 1901 and is the founder of the public opinion Gallup poll he founded the American Institute of Public Opinion in 1935 which later became the Gallup Organizationthe organization was located in Princeton NJ.

He was a proponent of the scientific sampling method which help lead him to his first triumph

His rise to fame came with the prediction that Franklin Roosevelt would beat Alfred Landon for the US presidency in 1936 when the Literary Digest which was the poll of record at the time stated that Landon would win in a Landslide

Gallup overcame this failure and his company continues to gather public opinion around the world

One thing I found most interesting about Gallup was that he maintained his independence and objectivity by refusing funds from special interest groups such as the Democratic and Republican parties.5Survey Research CenterRensis Likert and Angus Campbell

Surveys of Consumers

Organizational Behavior Program

Institute for Social Research

Center for Political Studies6+Prior to the SRC which was founded in 1946 survey research was still being questioned in academia; however in the 50s it became more prominent in sociology then exploded in the 70s through the 90sduring these times it was considered the methodology of choice

The Survey Research Center was founded by Likert and Campbell when they came to the University of Michigan from the U.S. Department of Agricultures Division of Program Surveys during WWII

Likert created the Likert Scale and the name is pronounced Lick-urt

Some of the highlights of survey research from the SRC include the

Survey of consumers which was created to examine the consumer attitudes and expectations about the U.S. economy

The organizational behavior program: originally known as the Human Relations Program, in order to better understand what characteristics of leadership and structure would make organizations more effective.

Institute for Social Research: t he Survey Research Center and the Research Center for Group Dynamics joined on Feb. 1 to form the Institute for Social Research, launching the nation's leading academic laboratory for social science research.

Center for Political Studies: a new center at ISR devoted to political research on issues such as individual voting behavior, media and politics, and institutional effects on policies and individual behavior.

The ISR celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2009a long way from the survey research center

This is a short history of survey research and now I will turn it over to Denise
