ASHLEY CHALLINOR

Vice President, Policy, Ontario Chamber of CommerceAshley Challinor is Vice President, Policy at the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and is the lead on their health policy file. Prior to joining the OCC in 2015, she worked in market research in Toronto, media in Tbilisi, and migration policy in Washington, DC. Ashley has an MSc. from the London School of Economics, an MA from the University of Southern California, and a BA from the University of Toronto. She currently serves on CivicAction’s Mental Health in the Workplace Champions Council.

Ontario Advisor, Oil Sands Initiative, Canadian Association of Petroleum ProducersDavid is a former chair of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and has held numerous senior positions within the energy sector in Canada including the natural gas and wind energy sectors. He has worked within Government as a Chief of Staff to Cabinet Minister’s and within the Public Service in various positions including the Cabinet Office. He now works for CAPP as an advisor in Ontario.

JAMES SCONGACK

Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs & Operational Services, Bruce PowerJames Scongack is the Executive-Vice President Corporate Affairs & Operational Services at Bruce Power.

He is responsible for Operational Services including Emergency Protective Services, Information Technology, Waste Management, Environment/Sustainability, Centre of Site and Corporate Affairs including Indigenous and Community relations, Communications, Corporate Social Responsibility and Government/Stakeholder relations. In his role he is also the executive lead for the Site Lease with the Province and Isotope development.

James served as Vice-President Corporate Affairs and Environment for Bruce Power from 2012-2018 and Head of Corporate Affairs from 2011-2012. From 2006-2011, James served as the Executive Assistant to Bruce Power’s President & CEO, while leading various company initiatives including new-build development projects and environmental reviews in Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan. During this time he served as part of the transaction team enabling the expansion of the site to eight units of operations through various agreements between 2007 and 2013.

More recently, James was part of the Bruce Power team which successfully negotiated a long-term commercial framework with the Province of Ontario, extending the life of the facility to 2064 enabling the $13 billion life extension program. He also served as executive co-host for the 2015 International Atomic Energy Agency OSART Mission.

James sits on the Board of Life Labs, Canada’s largest independent provider of laboratory services, and is Chairperson of the External Stakeholder Relations Committee of the Board.

HON. ROD PHILLIPS

Minister of the Environment, Conservation and ParksThe Honourable Rod Phillips was sworn in as Ontario’s Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks on June 29, 2018. Minister Phillips, MPP for Ajax, assumes his current role following a successful business career. Most recently, he was Chair of Afiniti Canada, a global artificial intelligence company, and Postmedia, Canada’s largest news media company. The minister is a former President and CEO of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, and of Shepell.fgi, a Canadian-based international employee health company. As well, he was volunteer chair of CivicAction, which brings together business, labour and community leaders to address challenges facing the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. The minister has also served as chief of staff in the offices of then-Minister of Labour Elizabeth Witmer and former Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman. Born in Newmarket, the minister has an Honours BA in political science and English from the University of Western Ontario, and an MBA from Wilfrid Laurier University.

ELLIOTT CAPPELL

Chief Resilience Officer, City of TorontoElliott Cappell is the Chief Resilience Officer for the City of Toronto. In this role he is leading the development of Toronto’s Resilience Strategy and the City’s participation in the global 100 Resilient Cities network.

A native Torontonian, Elliott also held various roles in the Government of Ontario and worked with Global Affairs Canada. He is passionate about adaptation, urban development, the environment, and wildlife.

Elliott has also worked in over 20 countries internationally, including in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Europe. He holds an MSc from the London School of Economics and a B.A. Honours from McGill University.

SHOSHANNA SAXE

Assistant Professor, Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, University of TorontoShoshanna Saxe is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Civil & Mineral Engineering. Prof. Saxe received her Master of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering from MIT (2009) and her PhD from the University of Cambridge in Engineering (2016) ( Jesus College). She primarily investigates the relationship between the infrastructure we build and the society we create, with a particular focus on environmental sustainability. Prof. Saxe maintains that our infrastructure systems are the skeletal structure of society; they drive how we live, work, consume and travel. Prof. Saxe is an alumna of Action Canada, a member of the Transportation Research Board’s standing committee on Transportation and Sustainability, and sits on Waterfront Toronto’s Capital Peer Review Panel.

Vice President, Technology & Innovation, Canadian Natural Resources Ltd.Joy has worked in steel, iron ore, coal and oil and gas. She has served as Chair of the Governing Council of Athabasca University, advisor to the NSERC Chair for Oil Sands, University of Alberta, the NSERC Chair for Energy and Imaging, University of Calgary, Chair of the Canadian Oil Sands Network for Research and Development, Chair for the Board of Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance, Chair of the Clean Resource Innovation Network, a board member of the Petroleum Technology Alliance of Canada and Wavefront, and a member of the Kinetica Ventures Advisory Council and the Science, Technology & Innovation Council for Canada.

CEO, Pond TechnologiesSteve is the President and CEO of POND Technologies based in Markham. Steve is a scientist, innovator, entrepreneur and business leader - all necessary skills to help bring algae and algae solutions to market to help address our collective environmental and climate change needs.

ARTHUR LOFSKY

Director, Government Relations and Climate Adaptation Lead (Ontario), Insurance Bureau of CanadaAs Senior Advisor, Climate Adaptation and Infrastructure, at Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), Arthur advances climate adaptation and flood resilience policy with Ontario’s government on behalf of IBC and its member companies.

Arthur has extensive experience in finance, policy development and environmental issues, gathered by working for almost 20 years within the public sector.

Previously, Arthur was employed in various capacities within the provincial government. He worked with MPP Mike Colle to establish Ontario’s Greenbelt and later served as Director of Policy in Ontario’s Finance Office under two ministers of finance. At the municipal level, Arthur served on the transition team for Toronto Mayor John Tory, advising the administration on fiscal policy and municipal-provincial financial and intergovernmental relationships.

Arthur has also spent time in the private sector in his own firm, Arthur Lofsky GR Consulting. He has an MBA from the Schulich School of Business.

ANDREW HEJNAR

Energy Manager, 3M CanadaAndrew Hejnar is 3M Canada Company’s Energy Manager with more than 15 years of experience in leading sustainability initiatives at 3M.

Hejnar’s focus on improving energy performance and reducing greenhouse gas emissions at 3M’s manufacturing facilities and commercial buildings across Canada enabled 3M to achieve the ISO 50001 Energy Management System Standard.

Hejnar was recently named Energy Manager of the Year for 2018 by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE). In 2017, Hejnar was named one of Canada’s Clean 16 as an outstanding contributor to clean capitalism in Canada.

Hejnar holds a Masters Degree in Energy Management and has Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering. He is also a member of 3M Canada’s Diversity & Inclusiveness Council.

LUC ROBITAILLE

Vice-President, Responsible Care®, Chemistry Industry Association of CanadaLuc Robitaille joined CIAC in 2015. He is responsible for overseeing CIAC’s environmental, health and sustainability issues; administrating RC verification processes; working with the National Advisory Panel, and coordinating best practice sharing and mutual support among Responsible Care participants. He has extensive experience working with industry and governments in the development and implementation of effective, evidence-based environmental regulations, policies and initiatives. Previously, Luc was Corporate Director, Environment for Holcim, one of the largest cement companies in North America. While at Holcim, he served as Chair of the Cement Association of Canada’s (CAC) Environment Committee. He holds an Engineering degree from Université Laval and an MSc Hydrogeology from Wright State University.

TIM MURPHY

Vice President, Environmental Performance, Walker IndustriesTim is the Vice President of Environmental Performance at Walker Industries a private family-owned conglomerate with interests in aggregates, construction, environmental and emulsion manufacturing across Canada and the USA.

Tim is a Director of the Board of the Ontario Environmental Industry Association and is a Committee member on many other industrial associations.

Tim has more than 30 years of professional experience in environmental and planning consulting and management in Canada, USA, Southeast Asia and South America.

BRUCE FARRAND

Manager, Research and Development, Primary Processes, ArcelorMittal DofascoGraduated from Queen’s University at Kingston, Ontario, with a Bachelors of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering. He continued study at Queen’s for a Masters degree in Metallurgy before joining Dofasco in 1986. He is currently a Manager of Primary Processes, in the ArcelorMittal Dofasco R&D.

Mr. Farrand has worked in the Research Department covering a broad range of the steel industry from the hot primary end (coke, iron, steel, casting) to the cold finishing end (tube mills, forming, testing). Technical projects have ranged from the steel industry’s raw materials and by-products, to the forming and quality needs of automotive customers.

During his career Mr. Farrand has also worked in the strategic planning group for ~2 years which led to broad work on the business of steel, a mini-mill in Kentucky and assessment of global steel opportunities. In 2005 Dofasco become part of ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steelmaker. As a result the Hamilton Research Dept became part of a much larger Global R&D organization. He is currently part of the Global R&D CO2 Working Group.

Bruce lives in Hamilton. He is active in the community with Scouting. Hobbies include baseball and owning a forest and sugar shack south of Hamilton.

ROBYN GRAY

Vice President, Energy and Environmental Practice, Sussex Strategy GroupRobyn Gray is a Vice President in the Energy and Environment Practice at Sussex Strategy Group. She provides counsel and strategic advice to a number of clients regarding issues pertaining to the environment, energy, sustainability, and resource recovery sectors. Prior to joining to Sussex, Robyn was a senior consultant at a leading public affairs firm in Australia. Previously, Robyn worked on both the provincial and federal levels of government in a variety of political offices.

Robyn has a Master’s Degree in Environmental Studies from York University, where she specialized in climate change policy. Robyn has earned her certificate in GHG Inventory, Accounting and Reporting from the University of Toronto. She is a founding member of Nature Canada’s Women for Nature initiative.

NICOLE WILLETT

Director, Public Affairs and Public Sector, Waste Management CanadaNicole Willett has over fifteen years of experience in the Waste Management industry, both in Canada and the United States. She is currently the Director of Public Sector and Public Affairs for Waste Management in Eastern Canada. Nicole manages Government Relations for Ontario and along with her team, provides sustainable environmental solutions to Municipalities, Colleges and Universities. Nicole sits on multiple boards including the Ontario Waste Management Association (OWMA) and was appointed by Regional Council to the Halton Region Waste Advisory Committee. Nicole has a BS in Business Administration from the University of Arizona, and a MBA from Arizona State University. Raised in Arizona, she currently resides in Toronto, Ontario.

JON DOGTEROM

Managing Director, Cleantech Venture Services, MaRS Discovery DistrictJon Dogterom leads Cleantech Venture Services at MaRS, assisting innovative Ontario-based companies in growing their businesses. He is also part of the Management Board of the Advanced Energy Centre, a public-private partnership that was co-founded and is hosted by MaRS Cleantech, and a member of the Ontario Smart Grid Forum.

Prior to joining MaRS, he led business development for Hydrogenics Corporation, where he focused on strategic partnerships, product development, and sales and marketing. He also helped launch the company’s fuel cell and hydrogen generation divisions. Jon previously worked with The Pembina Institute, leading corporate-consulting services on low-impact renewable energy and energy policy. In 1997 he co-founded Sustainable Energy Technologies, a leading Canadian provider of power electronics for the solar power industry.

Jon has degrees in civil environmental engineering from Queen’s University and in marketing and product management from the MIT Sloan School of Management.

TYLER WHALE

President, Ontario Agri-Food TechnologiesTyler Whale is a lucky hybrid of agricultural and academic backgrounds, possessing passion, experience and insight into the agri-food industry. Tyler was raised on a 7th generation dairy farm in Wellington County. After completing his BSc in Biochemistry, Tyler went on to obtain a PhD in microbiology/immunology and an MBA.

Along with two decades of farming experience, Tyler is an experienced entrepreneur, and worked for 6 years at the University of Guelph’s Catalyst Centre initiating collaborative R&D projects.

Dr. Whale is the President of Ontario Agri-Food Technologies, an organization that contributes to the viability of agri-food innovations within the bio-economy.

SANDRA ODENDAHL

President and CEO, CMC Research InstitutesSandra Odendahl is President and CEO of CMC Research Institutes, an environmental innovation company that provides scientific support and pilot facilities for testing and scaling-up new technologies that reduce industrial carbon emissions. CMCRI is at the forefront of carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) and GHG monitoring technology development in Canada. Sandra joined CMCRI in September 2017 with over 20 years of experience in environmental science, engineering, and responsible finance. She previously headed the Royal Bank of Canada’s Corporate Sustainability, Social Finance and Social Innovation teams. Prior to joining RBC, she worked as an environmental scientist in the natural resources sector in Canada and Southeast Asia.

Ms. Odendahl is Board Chair of The (Toronto) Atmospheric Fund, and a board director of the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA). Sandra has a Master’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Toronto. She is a licensed professional engineer, and a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter holder.

CLAUDIA DESSANTI

Policy Analyst, Ontario Chamber of CommerceClaudia Dessanti is a Policy Analyst at the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, where she leads the environment, energy, infrastructure, housing, and immigration files. Prior to joining the OCC in 2018, Claudia researched mortgage markets for National Bank Financial and measured social impact for Charity Intelligence. Claudia has an MSc in Evidence-Based Social Intervention and Policy Evaluation from the University of Oxford and a BA in International Relations from the University of Toronto.
