With new and more complex challenges in the design and construction of infrastructure and a continual need to find environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional building materials, the

industry as a whole is changing.

This seminar will focus on some of these challenges and how sustainable materials are being used to overcome them. The event will provide an opportunity to learn about some of the sustainable

Denise Roberts, MBA, Commercial Director Magnetite & Foundries, LKAB Minerals

Denise joined LKAB Minerals 29 years ago and is responsible for managing the Magnetite and Foundries businesses in the UK and Ireland. Denise has an MBA & background in Concrete Technology. She has extensive knowledge in the use of heavyweight aggregates and their properties along with their use in concrete and as a loose ballast.

Mark Moriarty, Sales Manager LKAB Minerals

Mark joined LKAB Minerals in 2010 having previously worked in the ceramic coatings industry for 25 years. Mark has a first class honours degree in Materials Engineering from Sheffield Hallam University, and held the position of Technical Manager with his previous employer before moving in to Sales. He is currently looking after the Radiation Sheilding and Water Treatment Businesses for LKAB Minerals.

10.15 Alternative cements and engineered cementitious composite Raman Mangabhai, BSc (Hons), MRSC, CChem, MICT, FIMMM, MCS

Raman Mangabhai graduated in applied chemistry from Salford University in 1978. He held research positions at Salford University, King’s College London and Queen Mary and Westfield College working on polymer modified cements, cement grouts, permeability of concrete. He has industrial experience at Kvaerner Technology, Cementation Foundations Skanska and Flexcrete Technologies Ltd working on cementitious materials and instrumentation in the construction industry. He has organised conferences on Calcium aluminates cements and edited conference proceedings. He has organised conferences on cementitious materials with SCI, IOM3 and ICT. He was member of committee for UKIERI concrete congress in 2013 and 2015. He is an active member of SCI Construction Materials Group and was Hon Secretary for 10 years, The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. He was ICT president from 2017-2019 and currently Past President, Council Member and Chairman of Events and Marketing of The Institute of Concrete Technology (ICT).

11.00 Gypsol Anhydrite Screed: a simple and sustainable flooring solutionAlan Jackson, Technical Specifications Manager Eastern, LKAB Minerals

Having joined the industry in 1996 Alan has more than twenty years experience with floor screeds and concretes. He has a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the specification and application of Anhydrite screeds and has been working exclusively with Gypsol for 7 years. He is well known in both the screeding and the floor coverings industries for his knowledge of final finishes and has delivered training to universities and colleges, major flooring suppliers and installers. He has also authored and had several articles published dealing with design, installation and post installation treatment of anhydrite screeds.

11.30 The use of GGBS in sustainable concreteSteve Handscomb MBA, MICT, Commercial Director GGBS & Gypsol, LKAB Minerals

Steve has over 34 years’ experience in the sector with a particular focus on concrete and cementitious products. He joined the group in July 2015 to head up the GGBS business and in 2019 he also took over management of the Gypsol screed business. Steve previously was Bulk Sales Director for Hanson cement. Prior to that he carried out an international sales management role with a global chemical company and various technical roles in building materials testing and precast concrete.Outside of the Group Steve is a trustee and chairman of the Dudley and District Citizens Advice and is an active member of the Institute of Directors. Steve holds qualifications in Concrete Technology and an MBA from Aston University.

12.00 Creating Sustainable Concrete with AdmixturesIan Ellis, Technical Services Manager - Admixture Systems UK & Ireland, BASF

Ian started as a concrete technician with Steetley in 1986, by 1996 he had become regional technical manager for Lafarge Redland. 2000 saw relocation to the Middle East as a technical manager in Bahrain, & from 2004 in Dubai. Returning to the UK in 2005 as a sales manager with Degussa was followed by becoming technical services manager for BASF Construction Chemicals UK & Ireland in 2008. In 2018 technology management responsibility for the BeNeLux business was added.

Afternoon: session three

13.30 Concrete: friend or foe?Richard Day, Head of Technical Services, The Concrete Society

A graduate civil Engineer, Richard joined The Concrete Society in 1997. His previous 9 years employment involved: R&D projects and consulting for construction companies under the Kvaerner banner (formally Trafalgar House and Cementation Research); a short period with Travers Morgan and some 7 years with Sir Robert McAlpine in various roles both on site and in their laboratory. He gained the Advanced Technology Diploma in 1987 and is a Fellow of ICT. Richard is responsible for the management of the Concrete Advisory Service’s engineers, Technical publications and Library service.

14.00 MagnaDense concrete as a sustainable Civil Engineering solutionRichard Hunt, Sales Manager LKAB Minerals

Richard has over 30 years’ Sales experience, predominantly in the building industry. His career has taken Richard in a number of directions, from builders merchants to manufacturing based companies. Richard joined LKAB in 2015, assuming responsibility for the Civil Engineering business.

shaft projectJim Fleming, Technical Director, Fairhurst

Jim is a structural engineer with more than 25 years’ experience in the design of building and civil engineering projects in the UK and overseas. He is currently a Technical Director in Fairhurst’s London office, responsible for a range of projects including many in the healthcare sector, where he has been working with LKAB on the use of High Density concrete in shielding applications.

15.10 Specifying, designing , producing and supplying heavyweight concrete from the prospective of a Readymix Concrete ProducerJack Sindhu PGDip,MCS, MICT, Technical Manager, Capital Concrete

Jack is currently the Technical Manager for Capital Concrete , a part of the Robert Brett Group , an independent family business based in Kent. Capital Concrete is a new venture with the focus to supply the London market with standard concrete as well as bespoke innovative and special concrete mixes to suit. Jack has been in the ready-mix concrete industry since the mid 80’s and has worked previously for Pioneer Concrete, Rugby Cement and more recently for a lengthy period with London Concrete. He has been instrumental in the supply of numerous prestigious projects which include the Lord’s Cricket ground Media centre, 2012 Olympics including the Stadium, Aquatic centre, Velodrome and infrastructure, The Shard with various milestones including long distance concrete pumping, high strength concrete and mass volume supply of concrete for the base, Successful supply of over 4,000m3 of Heavyweight concrete to the Crossrail floating track slab. He is active in the promotion of the use of ready-mixed concrete and is keen to assist with latest innovative techniques which require bespoke and cutting edge solutions.
