ITEMS OF INTEREST
To encourage novices and retain new members
the 30 minute discussion group before monthly
general meetings in the Cry Room will be
recommenced. The first meeting will be held in
July and will provide general information about
the structure of an orchid and what orchids are
good for Novices to start with. It will commence at
7:30pm.
The AOCC2018 Committee are still calling for
volunteers to assist in the running of the
conference on Friday 20 to Sunday 22 July. As a
volunteer, your entry will be free all day for their
services but not to the speaker program. Time
slots still available are Saturday and Sunday 8.00
am-12.30 pm and 12.30-5.00pm. You are asked to
contact Toni Benton on 4754 5480 or send an
email to [email protected].
The Society is entering 2 tables in Class D, Table
Top Display in the AOC Conference in July. With
Setup being on Wednesday 18th July, people who
are entering plants need to take them to Jan's
house on Tuesday 17th July. Jan and George will
transport the plants to the conference however
depending upon the number of plants being put
in the display, more than Jan's and George's cars
may be required to transport the plants on
Wednesday and return them on Sunday. If
anyone would like to assist with transporting the
plants, please contact Jan on 9520 6920. Gary
Hodder kindly volunteered his car.
Bunnings BBQ will be held on 8 July. The volunteer
roster was circulated for members to put their
name against.
Our Winter Show will be held this Thursday, Friday
and Saturday. The volunteer roster was circulated
for members to put their name against. Show
setup will be on Wednesday. Plants may be
brought in from 2 – 5 pm. If you cannot make it
during this time, you can make arrangements with
someone to take your plants. Please complete
the booking in sheets and yellow cards for your
plants. If you are putting plants on the sales table
you need to use the yellow tags , which can be
obtained from John Costa. Bunnings provided
$150 in sponsorship and not $250 as previously
advised. We also received a cheque for $300
from SSC Bushcare. Orchids Supplies by George
and Mike are providing $300 in sponsorship.
Members were asked to take some flyers to
distribute or to put on a shopping centre or
suburban notice boards. Taren Point Public School
will advertise the show on their electronic display.
Unfortunately the Sutherland Shire edition of the
Leader only published the Show details for
Thursday. and not Friday and Saturday.
4
Please note that the committee has voted to NOT
sell any orchid species or hybrids that are native
to NSW on our sales table at our winter show.
Under the new law which came into affect earlier
this year, our Society needs a licence to sell NSW
native species and native hybrid orchids to the
public. This includes ANY orchid hybrid that
contains a species that is native to NSW. The aim
of this new law is not directly targeted at individual
growers and societies, but is instead aimed to stop
the illegal collection from the wild and sale of our
protected orchid species and other plants. The
committee is currently looking into obtaining a
licence for the Society, however as the penalties
for not complying with these requirements is
considerable the Society won't have a licence in-
time for the Winter Show. Therefore no sale of
these orchids will be allowed at our Winter Show.
The only exception being if growers already have
their own personal licence to sell NSW native
orchids. This law only applies to the public sale of
orchids, and does not apply to private sales and
the sales table at our monthly meetings.
Our auction last month was very successful with
the Society's commission being $475 plus $220 for
the sale of Gordon Kay’s 6 donated plants,
totalling $695. This is an improvement on last
year’s effort. The standard of plants offered was
high and buyers would have gone home satisfied.
Novice member's draw of Gordon Kay's orchid -
June Black
Name badge draw – Col Brandon
Lucky plants - Not drawn. These will be drawn at
the July meeting.
President's award - Lee Buivid's Gungora
Raffle - Jan Robinson, Chris Bannell, Sandra Crosby
(2), Jenny Sharpham, Robert Cawley, Pat Dos
Santos, Mark Charleston.
Next meeting: 9 July 2018
YOU GREW IT
Tuberolabium kotoense –
exhibited by Irene and Ian Chalmers
Pronounced : too – ber – oh - LAY – bee – um
Found only in Taiwan in montane* forests at
elevations around 300 metres making it a hot
growing sympodial* epiphyte*.
This miniature species is from the Vandaceous
family but has the growth habits of a Phalaenopsis
and grows best under Phalaenopsis conditions. It
has thick leathery leaves that grow to about 10
cms.
It is best grown mounted on tree fern or cork to
best display the pendulous inflorescence that are
about 15 to 25 cm and emerge from between the
leaves. The inflorescence carry between 10 to 40
tiny flowers are 1 to 1.5 cm waxy in appearance and
open simultaneously. The flowers are white and
the labellum* is white with a purple fringe and are
very fragrant.
5
A hot house grower should be mounted or grown
in a small pot with chunky, quick draining mix.
Grow in semi shade, no direct sun, high humidity
and even moisture but does not like to stay wet.
NOTE:
Montane – inhabiting mountainous country.
Sympodial – growing from a new lead forming a
new pseudobulb with each growth.
Epiphyte – Most orchids are epiphytes. They
attach to tree branches and trunks but are not
parasites.
Labellum – the lip of the orchid.
Dendrobium tiongii
– exhibited by Lee Buividis
This large warm growing epiphyte, from the
Philippines, that is found growing at elevations of
500-1000 metres. The long canes can grow to over
one metre in length and despite their length are
usually erect. The elongate* stems have papery
leaves on the upper 2/3’s of the canes.
The blooms appear on the opposite side of the cane
to the leaves. The very short inflorescence* can
have up to 40 smallish flowers. The bunched,
arrangement of flowers are yellow to orange with a
bright red blotch at the junction of the side lobes
and the labellum.
A species very similar is Dendrobium
bullenianum. The major differences being that
Dendrobium tiongii has erect stems no matter how
long and the flowers are solid in colour and never
stripped as with D. bullenianum.
NOTE : Elongate – stretched or extended
Inflorescence – the shoot or stick that the flowers are arranged on that arises from the plant.
6
Dendrobium secundum –
exhibited by Peter Ng
Commonly referred to as the “toothbrush orchid”,
relating to the spray of flowers on the
inflorescence.
Found throughout S.E.Asia to the Philippines in
semi deciduous dry lowland forests growing from
sea level to 700 metres. A hot to warm grower has
semi pendulous sulcate* stems that taper at both
ends.
The inflorescences appear on last year’s mature
leafless canes usually towards the end of the cane
and are 12 to 15cm in length and have up to 50
waxy, glossy, fragrant flowers that do not open
fully and all face in the one direction and on one
side of the inflorescence giving the appearance of
a tooth brush. The colour varies from pale pink to
magenta with an orange labellum.
This orchid is best mounted to accommodate the
pendulous habit of the plant but can be grown well
in a pot. The pot should be as small as possible and
allowed to dry out between watering. Resume
water and fertiliser after a winter rest period when
the new grows appear in spring.
NOTE:
Sulcate – grooved or furrowed
Cadetia collina
– exhibited by Richard Dimon
7
Pronounced: ka – DET – ee – ah
Native to Papua and New Guinea, found at
elevations of 60 to 900 metres, growing on smooth
barked limbs of large trees in seasonally dry
lowland forests.
This orchid is from the Dendrobium “subtribe” but
is very different to most dendrobiums. This robust
small hot growing epiphyte has single globulous*
leaves and has a growth habit somewhat similar to
that of a Pleurothallis. The inflorescence is short,
about ½ cm and emerges from the base of the
leaf, sometimes two from the same point. The
inflorescence has a single flower that is about 1cm
across. The flower has white petals and sepals with
a white lip that has a rose-pink fringe around the
lip.
Cadetia grow very similar to tropical
bulbophylums.
NOTE:
Globulous – almost round or rounded on each end.
SSOS Winter Show
– A big success!
Well done to you 28 members who
exhibited plants in our Winter Show, every orchid
added a bit of colour and interest to our Show
Benches. Everyone had been saying that they
wouldn’t have many flowers out for the Show but
we still ended up with 151 plants benched, a very
good effort. Congratulations to Sandra and Tony
for winning Grand Champion as well as Reserve
Champion. Their grand champion plant,
Oncidium sotoanum ‘Joy’ HCC/AOC, was
magnificently flowered and won Best Specimen as
well as Champion Species. Sandra told me that
their lovely plant had been bought as only a very
small seedling from the late Neville Roper years
and years ago when our shows were still at Swanes
Nursery. Their Reserve Champion and Champion
Native Species or Hybrid, Dendrobium Hilda
Poxon ‘G100’, was also very well flowered and also
won second –best specimen plant. As our best
species plant, ‘Joy’ has been entered into the
Affiliated Societies annual competition, as has
Hilda Poxon ‘G100’ as our best hybrid of the show.
Thank you, Gary Hodder, for taking the
professional quality photos of these two
competition entries.
Champion Cymbidium Hybrid was won by
Archie with his stunning yellow Clarence Glory x
Amber Harvest. To fill the empty show bench
tables along the windows, Archie brought in more
cymbidiums that were not entered into the judging
but helped to fill the room with flowers, thank you
so much, Archie. Archie also sourced the beautiful
raffle prize orchids for us—and weren’t they a big
hit! We sold heaps of raffle tickets and two of our
own members won two of the four prizes, although
how Heath is going to fit that big cymbid into his
already-crowded collection is anyone’s guess.
Good luck with that, Heath.
Speaking of stunning yellow, if you think
you might have seen that huge paph before that
won Champion Paphiopedilum Hybrid, you are
right. John Costa got Paph Sheerline ‘Rondo’ from
Cheryl who has also won a Championship or two
with the “mother plant” Sheerline ‘Rondo’ over the
8
years. If there are any spare pieces of ‘Rondo’
around, John or Cheryl, I know a few members
who would love to acquire them.......!
Vic Petrovski did very well, winning both
Champion Laeliinae Hybrid and Champion
Oncidiinae Hybrid. Did you happen to notice the
unusual name of Vic’s champion catt? It was
Cattleya TA2 which was the only name on this
particular flask that Vic bought some years ago.
Another plant out of this same flask won
Champion Laeliinae Hybrid this year at the Royal
Easter Show and Vic reminded me the flower was
completely different from this one and obviously
came out a lot earlier! You never know what you
are going to get out of a flask.............
Sandra and Tony also won Champion
Pleuro Hybrid or Species with Masd. Bridie ‘Dawn
Moon’ and the Chalmers Duo of Ian and Irene took
out Champion Other Orchid with yet another
stunning yellow flower, their beautiful lycaste
seedling with a name worth remembering: Lycaste
Auchita x Mpm Kage-Yuki Mito, how’s that for a
mouth full? Cheryl Matheson won Champion
Orchid Exhibited by a Novice, Intermediate or
Junior with not Paph Sheerline ‘Rondo’ this time,
but with Oncid Wildcat ‘Carmela.’ Well done,
Cheryl, your days in the Intermediate division are
numbered!!
Wal Chapman as usual brought a lovely
table top display that drew a lot of interest from
the public. How about for our Spring Show, a few
more of you put in a table top and give Wal some
competition?
The Show was very successful
financially as well, we more than covered our costs,
so it was definitely a “Winner, Winner, Chicken
Dinner” as one of my American cousins would say!
If you have any feedback about our Winter Show,
whether positive or negative, please let one of the
Committee members know on Monday night as we
are already planning the Spring Show. Thanks
again to everyone who participated in the Winter
Show, a lot of volunteer hours went into making it
such a success. Special thanks go to George and
Mike, whose business ‘Orchid Supplies by George
& Mike’ generously sponsor the prize vouchers for
first and second place winners.
What’s next on our show agenda? The AOC
Conference this month, the Society is putting on a
two table top display which hopefully we will have
enough orchids to fill. Come to our monthly
meeting on Monday night and find out more about
this event.

21st AOC Orchids in the Foothills Update -Vanilla
Challenge
The local community are participating in an
exciting initiative - the “Honour The Vanilla
Orchid" Challenge, to make people aware that
vanilla comes from an orchid plant (Vanilla
planifolia) and to celebrate the contribution of
vanilla to cuisine throughout history. Cafes and
restaurants in the Richmond-Windsor region have
created a “vanilla flavoured’ item for sale to
customers, preferably by using Australian grown
vanilla, with prizes to be awarded at the Opening
Ceremony.
