Sverdrup Nyheter
From the President
April -already? Spring- where are you? I tried to get my
potatoes planted yesterday, as Good Friday is a gardens
goal. But my snow blower would not start and I didn’t
put the tire chains on it either. So alas, I must wait a little
longer.
Sons of Norway International President, Jon Tehven
(another North Dakota product) reminded us in his article
this month, that April is also National Volunteer Month.
Over the years our lodge has been involved in many community events
and volunteerism is one aspect of membership promotion. President
Tehven said “Opportunities such as these not only strengthen our communities
but also help our members bond with one another and increase our visibility.
Prospective members see our enthusiasm and commitment in action.”
With that I want to especially thank Julie Roe, Claudia Berg, Mike Nickel,
Joyce Harden, Stephanie & Steve Olson, Margaret & Dave Phillips for
serving the banquet on Saturday March 10th and Duane Svanes and the
members who are now signing up to deliver “Meals on Wheels” for the
entire month of May. Earlier in the year, Alice Falkenstein again filled the
volunteer spots for the Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign. These efforts
and the other kind things you all do, throughout the year in our
community, speak so highly of your commitment to make our community
a blessed place to live and work.
Hadde bra og takk for meg.

News from Anne Krause
3-16-18
Survey says…most Americans haven’t prepared for long term care!
People talk about it, hope they’ll never need it (denial), expect their family
to step up and fill in if necessary, consider increasing their savings to take
care of costs…the list goes on and on. Three fourths of us aren’t doing
anything beyond talking to provide for our long-term care (LTC). About
half of the people that don’t have money set aside for their LTC are relying
on the family to take care of them. Will your spouse be healthy enough,
strong enough and patient enough to give you care? Can your kids afford to
quit or reduce their work, absorb the extra costs and time away from their
families to help you? Have you discussed this with your family?
You have better choices!

Convention Planning
You might be interested in portions of the June
convention. We will have a summary of events at
the April and May socials for you to review and pick
up a guest registration form. The Memorial Service &
President’s Reception kicks of the event. It will be
held at the ND Heritage Center on Thursday night
June 14th beginning at 7 PM. You are all invited to
attend. Non- delegates will have tickets available for
purchase to attend. The fee for the event will be
$10/person to cover the catered refreshments and
horde ‘ores. We will need advanced ticket sales to
give the caterer an estimate of the food to prepare.
We will be selling these tickets at the next 2 socials.
Convention will be held from June 14-16, 2018.

Sverdrup’s Library Pictured to the left are Marcia Hansen
and Helen Swenson perusing the books
in our library. The library is managed
by Kathy Robinson.
Each book has a card in a pocket in the
cover. To check them out simply write
your name and date on the card and
put it in the box. Enjoy the read and
don’t forget to return the books so
others may have an opportunity to
read them as well. The books are about
Norwegian subjects and written in
English.
The lodge has a line item for purchasing new books, and lodge
members have been generous in donating books from their
personal libraries as well.
Meals on Wheels
May is Meals on Wheels Month for Sverdrup.
Pictured is Duane Svanes recruiting volunteers to
deliver meals. We have two routes and will deliver
noon meals the entire month of May. Thanks to all of
you have volunteered to deliver meals.

“Banquet” at Trinity in March Pictured below are Margaret Phillips, Joyce Harnden, Stephanie Olson, Mike Nickels, Dave Phillips, Steve Olson , Jerry Saude with Julie Roe in Front. Also included but not pictured is lodge photographer Claudia Berg. There were 180 meals served.
The Banquet is a feeding ministry which started in 2005 with an evening meal each week and has now expanded to 3 meals a week. Churches and community groups come together, purchase prepare and serve the food, as well as greeting the guests. On the menu for this lunch were meatballs, gravy, potatoes, vegetables, and cookies. It was served cafeteria style.
