Journal Size: This cover is designed to fit Moleskine Cahier notebooks in either the small size, or large size. Other soft cover notebooks with the same measurements can also be used. Small cover fits notebooks: 3.5" wide x 5.5" high (9cm x 14cm). Large cover fits notebooks: 5.25" wide x 8.25" high (13cm x 21cm).

Approximate Finished Dimensions: Small - 4” wide x 6.25” high (10.5 x 16 cm) / Large - 5.75” wide x 9” high (15 x 23 cm)

Cut on Fold: Piece A - Large is a half piece & needs to be placed on a fold for cutting.

Seam Allowance: Use a 1/4" allowance unless otherwise specified. Pattern pieces include allowance.

Recommended Fabrics: Instructions are demonstrated using quilting cotton. Other light to medium weight fabrics can also be used.

Interfacing: This project is demonstrated using fusible interfacing on the exterior fabric pieces and sew-in interfacing on the lining pieces. Fusible can be used on all pieces if you prefer.

a) Fold both fusible interfacing B pieces in half from side to side, and then fold again from bottom to top.

b) Clip corner that is not on a fold, cutting through all layers, and removing a 0.5" (13mm) square of interfacing from the corner. Note: trimming doesn't need to be exact--just cut away a piece about 0.5".

c) Repeat steps a) - b) for sew-in interfacing A. Note: Corners of fusible interfacing A are left intact to provide stability.

d) Fold sew-in interfacing C in half from side to side, and trim away a 0.5" (13mm) square of from corners. Note: Corners of fusible interfacing C are left intact to provide stability.

e) Apply fusible interfacing pieces to the WRONG side of corresponding exterior fabric A, B & C pieces.

f) Place the sew-in interfacing pieces on the WRONG side of the corresponding A & C lining pieces. Pin pieces in place, if desired.

a) Fold B pieces in half from side to side, WRONG sides together, and press to crease down center.

b) Topstitch at 1/8" - 1/4" along folded edges of both pockets.

c) Align pockets on lining A, with topstitched edges facing each other in the center.

d) Pin pockets in place.

e) Baste pockets to lining A.

a) Cut the VELCRO to size:small - 2" (5cm) / large - 3" (8cm)

b) Center one half of the VELCRO piece so the bottom edge is 0.75" (2cm) from curved edge of lining C. Note: Same measurement for both sizes.

c) Sew VELCRO in place.

d) Place exterior fabric C & lining C RIGHT sides together. Match edges & pin.

e) Sew C pieces together, leaving the flat end open.

f) Notch curves.

g) Press stitching to set thread.

h) Turn flap RIGHT side out.

i) Press to neaten seam.

j) Topstitch around curved edge at 1/8" - 1/4".

k) Center completed flap along one side of exterior fabric A, with exterior fabrics RIGHT sides together.

l) Baste flap in place using a 1/8" allowance.

m) Center remaining half of VELCRO on side opposite the flap, with bottom edge of VELCRO the following distance from edge of A: small - 1", large - 1.5".

n) Sew VELCRO in place.

a) Place exterior fabric A & lining/pockets A RIGHT sides together.

b) Sew around outside, leaving a 3" opening on the side where the VELCRO is attached. For best results, sew the opening closed first-- back stitch at beginning & end, and lengthen stitch in the middle.

c) Clip corners.

d) Press stitching to set thread. If you've sewn the opening closed, press seam open flat at the opening & then remove stitches between back stitching.

a) Turn cover right side out through opening.

b) Push corners out square & neaten seams. Press around outside edges.

c) Slip stitch opening closed.

d) Place journal inside to determine topstitching allowance. Remove journal & topstitch around outside edges.

e) Sew button to flap front, if desired.
