“Several of the most significant players in modern Swedish ice hockey history”Sweden and its national ice hockey team, Tre Kronor, are a power to be reckoned with in the ice hockey world. Sweden was selected to be a member of the then LIHG – Ligue International de Hockey sur Glace – at the congress in Brussels in 1912. Today this organization is called IIHF, Inter-national Ice Hockey Federation.

Sweden’s first national team ice hockey game was played during the Antwerp Olympics in 1920. Sweden debuted against Belgium and won 8–0. Erik Burman scored the first goal.

The three crowns, from which the national team, Tre Kronor, derives its name, have been on the uniforms since the World Championships in Prague in 1938. The name Tre Kronor has become the national team’s name in popular parlance. The first World Championships in Sweden were held in 1949. Sweden placed fourth.

Sweden’s breakthrough as a modern ice hockey powerhouse can be traced to two World Champion-ship victories – 1957 in Moscow in the Soviet Union and 1962 in Colorado Springs in the USA. Sweden also hosted the World Championship three times in the 1960s: 1963, when Sven Tumba was depicted

on the two World Championship stamps issued by Sweden, 1969 and 1970.

The four Swedish ice hockey players that are pre-sented here are some of the most important names in modern Swedish ice hockey history.

Börje Salming was born in 1951 in Kiruna. He was a 19-year-old defender when he started playing for Brynäs IF in the highest division. He had his big breakthrough in the World Championships in Moscow in 1973 and thereafter was recruited to the NHL, where he played 17 seasons, of which 16 were for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Börje Salming has been voted into the NHL’s, IIHF’s and the Swedish Ice Hockey Association’s Hockey Halls of Fame. He was a leader on the ice with his fearless, physical and tough style of play, and he is considered to be the player who broke the ice and created respect for Swedish players in the NHL.

Nicklas Lidström was born in 1970 in Avesta. He played for Västerås IK in Sweden between the years 1987 and 1991. He was then picked up by the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL, and he played 20 seasons for this successful club before retiring

As a build-up to the Ice Hockey World Championships in the Globe Arena on May 3–19, we are issuing a series of stamps depicting several of our greatest players of all time. Leif Boork writes exclusively for Bulletin’s readers about Swedish ice hockey and the four ice hockey heroes who are now motifs on stamps. Leif Boork is one of Swedish ice hockey’s biggest names. He has previously been the coach of Tre Kronor, the Swedish national ice hockey team, and he currently is a frequent expert TV commentator.

from the sport in 2012. Lidström belongs to the famous Triple Gold Club, which means that he is one of the 25 players in the world who has won the Olympics, the World Championships and the Stanley Cup.

He was a leader on the ice with his technical skills and excellent tactical ability. Lidström was also known for his proper and gentlemanly conduct throughout his career.

Jörgen Jönsson was born in 1972 in Ängelholm. His mother club was Rögle BK before he made the move in 1995 to Färjestads BK. After two Swedish championships, Jörgen Jönsson had a brief NHL career during the 1999–2000 season. He then came back to Färjestads BK, where he played until he retired after the 2008/2009 season.

Jörgen Jönsson has earned a place in the history books as the top player in the 200 Club, i.e. he has played 285 national team games with Tre Kronor. Jörgen Jönsson was a tactical and technical player without being a showman. Thanks to his ability to always maintain a high level of play, Jönsson was always responsible for crucial plays on the teams he represented.

Henrik Lundqvist was born in 1982 in Åre. He went to Frölunda Hockey early, debuting already in the 2000–2001 season.

Lundqvist managed to win the Swedish champion-ship, be named the best goalkeeper of the top league in Sweden, and be named MVP of the top league in Sweden before he was picked up in 2005/2006 by the New York Rangers in the NHL. He still plays for this club today. After the 2011/2012 season he won the Vezina Trophy, which distinguishes him as the NHL’s best goalkeeper for the season.

Henrik Lundqvist is ranked as one of the world’s best goalkeepers. Thanks to his quick reflexes in crucial moments, he has the ability to win games for his team, but his style of play is still calm and many people believe he has many years left as one of the top players in modern hockey.

New Souvenir Sheet with classic ice hockey stamps“We decided to re-issue the stamp depicting Peter “Foppa” Forsberg’s goal since it is one of the Swedish stamps that is most well-known and received the most attention. The goal that Foppa scored in the 1994 Olympics has come to be called “the stamp goal”. Many customers have requested this stamp after it sold out, which is why we are re-issuing it,”

says Kristina Olofsdotter, head of design at Sweden Post Stamps.

The design is basically the same as the stamp from 1995. The year has been updated to reflect the year of the new issue and the denomination for Domestic has been changed to the current rate, SEK 6.

Sweden Post should be the environmental alternativeThe Swedish stamps depict mail carriers with environmentally friendly bicycles and electric cars. Every fourth car used for Swedish mail delivery is an electric car. The electric car is currently used exclusively in major cities.

The idea behind Sweden Post’s environ-mental approach is that for every kilowatt hour and liter of fuel that is saved, some of the Earth’s resources have been saved. Efforts are constantly being made to decrease the organization’s impact on the environment and climate.

Whenever possible, bicycles, electric cars and trains are used. Today, more than half of the letters and messages are transported between sorting terminals by train. The vehicle

fleet is regularly updated to more environmen-tally efficient alternatives.

Other efforts from Sweden Post to decrease its impact on the environment include eco-driving training for drivers, smarter route planning and increased capacity maximization in its trucks. The more that is loaded into a truck for a single run means that fewer runs are needed.

Sweden Post’s services are also being adapted to be more environmentally friendly. There are currently green alternatives for Brev (Letters), eBrev (e-Letters), Varubrev (Goods Parcels), DR (Direct Mail) and Posttidning (Periodicals).

The theme of this year’s Europa stamps is Mail en route. The theme is decided by PostEurop, which has around 40 member countries. Each country then chooses its own stamp motif related to the theme.

Mail carrier on the stamp

Marie Andersson

Södermalm in Stockholm, from Göt-gatan in the west to Danvikstull in the east. See where fifty employees at the Sofia Distribution Office make sure that all of the households and small companies receive their mail every day.

One of the mail carriers is Marie Andersson. She is responsible for delivering mail to almost 1,000 households. She has worked for Sweden Post her entire professional career. She started in her hometown of Södertälje immediately after high school and came to Sofia in 2007.

During her almost 20 years as a mail carrier, Marie Andersson has put thousands of miles behind her, mainly on a bicycle – both with and without an electric motor – and in the tiny, environmentally friendly electric Club Car. Marie Andersson and her electric car are now becoming a motif on a stamp.

“I drove the car both in Söder-tälje and here on Södermalm. Many people are curious about it and I get lots of questions. How great that it will now be on a stamp and become famous! It is fun to drive. It is pretty good for traversing the city streets and it uses batteries that are charged at night. For me the car has become a personality,” says Marie Andersson.

A big advantage to using the Club Car compared to a bicycle is that when Marie Andersson and her colleagues head out on their routes they can bring along all of the mail for households and companies. They do not need to visit the boxes that are placed throughout the district to fill their bags with more mail.

It was not a difficult choice for Marie Andersson to start working at Sweden Post. Her father worked in the distribution center and mother worked as a cashier and then at the business center in Södertälje. The first people she will send postcards to with her own stamp will be her parents and other family members.

Unique drawings trace Stockholm’s development

UNESCO’s list of invaluable World Heritage sites is well-known among the general public. Less well-known is that this UN organization also began preparing a list several years ago of important world documents that are of considerable value for posterity. The Stockholm City Planning Committee Archives were included in the Memory of the World Register in 2011.

The oldest blueprint in Stockholm City Archives’ storehouse deep within the mountain just a few stone throws from City Hall is 300 years old. This anniversary and the fact that UNESCO added the Stockholm City Planning Committee Archives to the Memory of the World Register in 2011 are the reasons behind this stamp issue.

“We naturally believe that it is both fun and important that this collection of around 2.5 million drawings is now being celebrated on a stamp. Together with Sweden Post we selected five motifs that reflect different eras, types of drawings and property functions,” says Mats Hayen, an archivist at Stockholm City Archives.

The blueprints in the city archives make it pos-sible to follow in detail Stockholm’s development from a small town in the 1700s to the modern city of the late 1900s with a million inhabitants. One of the people who played an important role in

the creation of the archives was the powerful city architect, J. E. Carlberg, who pushed through the law in 1736 that required the filing of blueprints for every single new build and change.

“Two of the blueprints on the stamps have a close geographic relationship. Where today’s Kulturhus building extends between Drottning-gatan and Brunkebergstorg, 200 years ago there was a long, narrow rental and office building owned by spice shopkeeper Ericsson. Stockholm then and now in a nutshell,” says Mats Hayen.

“The hand-colored drawing of spice shopkeeper Ericsson’s building in Stockholm is from 1795 and is typical of that era. During the 1900s the blueprints lost their color and became more technical,” says Mats Hayen, an archivist at Stockholm City Archives. photo: thorsten sandberg

Designer of the stamps

Per Ingemann …

... experienced Danish stamp designer who marks his stamp debut in Sweden with this stamp. How does it feel to design Swedish stamps?

“It is always an honor to design stamps. I have had a lot of contact with Sweden over the past decade, particularly with Lars Sjööblom, who engraved the Danish stamps I designed, and it is very exciting to be directly involved in Swedish stamp design.”What were your thoughts about the design work?

“This assignment meant that to some extent I was given the chance to return to my old professional role as an architect, which naturally affected my method of designing the stamps. I believe that my overall approach, with the placement of the blueprints and the typography, was successful. I am satisfied with the results and hope that collectors and stamp users will also be satisfied.”What differences did you notice between working with Swedish and Danish stamps?

“None, really, since both countries are well known for the quality of their graphic design. The collaboration between the project manager, Barbro Sjöberg, the engravers, Lars Sjööblom and Martin Mörck, and the artistic advisor, Hans Cogne, was excellent. We had a great method of working and a great dialogue!”Why did you choose to become an artist?

“That is a complex question. There were so many choices and reflections. But if I were to pick one moment, it was the meeting with a pair of Chilean artists in exile. Their commitment and insight opened my eyes to visual arts and graphic design, and they also became my first art teachers.”What kind of artistic education do you have?

“I studied painting and graphic design at Funen Art Academy in Odense and graphic design in Krakow, Poland, and I got my degree in architecture and graphic design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. I have also studied art history. Before I came to Post Denmark Stamps in 2001 I worked for several years at a publishing house that specialized in architecture.”

Stamps are an important part of e-commerceArne Andersson is Sweden Post’s expert in distance selling, more commonly referred to as e-commerce. He is constantly out on the market explaining the solutions Sweden Post has created to facilitate this type of business. Stamps with appropriate denominations are an important part of the offer.

“You might think that only private indivi-duals who are buying from and selling to one another would need stamps with denomina-tions for slightly heavier packages. But when

I meet small business owners who are ready to start an online store, it is striking how im-portant the stamp issue is for them, as well,” he says.

Arne Andersson is a regular contributor to e-Barometer, a publication that is issued every quarter by Sweden Post, the industry organization, Svensk Distanshandel, and HUI Research. e-Barometer discusses trends within e-commerce.

“The general public is increasingly turning to this type of commerce. The fastest growing segments of e-commerce are sports and leisure, but shoes and clothes are not far behind. We believe that many other retail industries will grow and represent a larger portion of distance selling in the next few years. And Sweden Post should be there and continue to be the best alternative for online shoppers. For both companies and private individuals,” says Arne Andersson.

Sweden Post is intro-ducing a number of convenient solutions to meet the needs of the expanding distance-selling market. A new series of stamps is being introduced with denomi-nations that are perfect for the heavier parcels associated with online shopping.

Arne Andersson.

Stamp designer

Kristian Möller

What have you been doing since your last stamp, The Royal Crown Princess Couple, was issued in the spring of 2010?

“I started a new company. I am also studying full-time at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in its “Storytelling” Master’s program. Last year I was selected to join Stockholm Typographical Guild and I designed a book for the photographer, Rikard Laving. And I got married.”What were your thoughts when you started to work on the Compass stamp?

“Since the theme was time and space, I started by doing some re-search. I quickly realized that modern instruments to measure time and space are lacking in esthetics and clarity. I therefore chose to use a story-telling perspective in my illustration and selected a classic compass.”What were your thoughts about the design work?

“I borrowed the lighting and cropping from Fritz Lang’s movie, “Metro polis”. The blue in the compass represents optimism, infinity, travel and discovery. The motif was illustrated, adapted and positioned based on the proportions of the format.”Why did you choose to become an artist?

“I have always been interested in design and began to design letters, record covers and book covers when I was only 16. My father is an Art Director, which had an influence on me.”Where did you study art?

“I studied at Falmouth College of Arts in England from 2003 to 2004, and in 2008 after three years of studies I received a Bachelor’s degree from the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design’s Department of Graphic Design & Illustration. As I previously mentioned I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree from the two-year program at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design.”Who are your role models within the art world?

“Massimo and Leila Vignelli, Otto Neurath, Dieter Rams and Jan Tschichold all influenced my work and opened my eyes to the fascinating world of letters and the idea that words, letters, images and numbers have the greatest meaning when they represent an idea or a thing.”

When Leif Boork stepped down as coach in 2008 he had more time to devote to his collection of ice hockey stamps and other objects related to the sport. He started to collect stamps in 1957 when he became a member of the legendary “Folket i Bilds” Stamp Club. Leif Boork is still curious about the stamps that are being issued and his collection continues to grow.

Leif Boork – strong profile within both ice hockey and philatelyJust like most children and youths who start to collect stamps, Leif Boork collected a bit of everything. His album contained Swedish stamps, of course, but also many stamps from, for example, the British Commonwealth. He eventually specialized in sports motifs and he has been collecting ice hockey stamps for a long time.

“In conjunction with large tournaments I sometimes see collectors and dealers from dif-ferent countries who have exciting objects for sale. Sometimes the hosts have also arranged exhibitions. I remember in particular the World Championships in Vienna in 1987 when they had a really nice exhibition about ice hockey motifs at City Hall.”

Leif Boork has an inquiring mind and is constantly looking to learn new things. He is a humanitarian with a wide range of perspec-

tives in the sometimes crude sport of hockey, where time often does not extend beyond the next game.

Leif Boork is a history buff and he views his stamp collection as a way to map and document the history of ice hockey. He has therefore expanded his collection to include postcards, game tickets and other objects that complement the stamps.

“Postcards have become a favorite part of my collection. The cards are multi-faceted. You not only get an interesting motif, but also a stamp, a cancellation and a greeting from a different place or event. Take the postcard from the Nordic Games in 1901 as an example. A black and white action shot of an ice hockey warrior on the ice at Nybroviken. I wonder who this Märta was who sent the card. An early fan of ice hockey, perhaps?”

“Whenever I can when I am in Stockholm, I slip into Postmuseum and search the catalogues for new ice hockey stamps for my collection. Postmuseum’s library is a real gold mine for us collectors!”

“I was the coach for the Norwegian national ice hockey team when Norway hosted the World Champion-ships in 1999 and Norway Post issued these stamps. To the left is my team in action and to the right is Peter Forsberg on attack against the Swiss goalkeeper. I was Foppa’s’ coach for a while.”

“I also have a lot of postcards in my collec-tion. SFU’s card and postcard with hockey on the ice at Nybro-viken in Stockholm in 1901 are of a slightly different character. The Nordic Games were at that time the big winter sports event and a pre-decessor to the Winter Olympic Games.”

“EKO Sports Stamps Album from 1961 is special for a collector. It has all of the sport stamps issued that year, including the Swiss stamps issued for the Ice Hockey World Championships in Geneva and Lausanne, and the stylish series from Czechoslovakia.”

Stamp depicting Börje Salming on new stamp clock

Hockey Heroes Stamp ClockSize: 42 x 42 mmNumber issued: 1,000 Art. no.: 242757

SEK 169

The motif on the twelfth stamp clock in this popular series is the stamp depicting Börje Salming from the Hockey He-roes booklet. The clock is self-adhesive and can be attached to different types of material. Batteries are included.

The stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary of Raoul Wallenberg's birth won the vote for the 2012 Stamp of the Year. Second place went to the stamp depicting the Coast Guard's Dash 8 Q-300 aircraft monitoring the Swedish coastline and third place went to the Summer Flowers stamp. The 2012 Stamp of the Year, Raoul Wallenberg Centenary, was designed by Gustav Mårtensson and engraved by Lars Sjööblom. The proofs are two

portrait photographs of Wallenberg from Everett Collection/IBL Bildbyrå. The stamp is included in a minisheet where the motifs in the margin around the stamps depict a protective passport and a street view from Budapest based on a photo by Thomas Veres.
