Sweden recycling

Sweden recycling and waste By: Jacob Maniloff

Overview Sweden has abnormal practices of recycling, processing and creating energy.

This is a Swedish Recycling PlantThe Swedish Governments plan for recycling is called:

99% Recycling, Thats The Swedish Way

What Do they do?Swedish people and their government have made very strong efforts to ensure recycling is done to is fullest. Every household, school, public area, work place, etc... have multiple bins for recycling different items

The Swedish people take pride in their country and teach their children at a young age the importance of recycling.

Swedens trash Sweden also has abnormal practices for their trash disposal programs:Sweden burns almost all of their trash

Sweden collects and burns their trash to create energy for their cities

Is this ethical? Many people and countries feel that burning trash is unethical, because it has great risk to people and the environment

Sweden has found there are no substantial environmental issues from this program

Sweden claims the benefits of not having landfills and not wasting trash are far greater then any of the negatives of this program 8Do they have enough trash?Starting in 2010, Sweden could not produce enough trash to run their plants for energy, so they were forced to import trash. Each year, Sweden imports about 700,000 tons of trash from neighboring countries

Personal opinions I was surprised to hear that burning trash was practical in another countryI would have assumed it would be considered unethical everywhere in the world, and thus not allowed. I was also surprised to find out other countries have better recycling and disposal practices than AmericaThe entire process of burning trash for energy is very interesting to me, and I wonder if it is feasible in the United States? My only concern is the environmental risk and the hazard to the O-Zone

So What?We have learned there are alternative methods to trash disposal and recycling, but what does that mean for us?

We must begin to educate our children at a young age the importance of making an effort to recycle all that we can

As a country, we must experiment with the most beneficial methods of disposing of our waste
