The bow and arrow are known to have been inventedby the end of the Upper Paleolithic.

Archery was highly developed in Asia and in the

Islamic world. In East Asia, ancient Koreancivilizations, such as the Silla, Baekje, andGoguryeo were well known for their regiments of exceptionally skilled archers.[2] Central Asian tribesmen (after the domestication of the horse)and American Plains Indians (after gaining access tohorses) were extremely adept at archery on horseback

The bow seems to have been invented by thelate Paleolithic or early Mesolithic.

Bows and arrows have been present in Egyptian culturesince its predynastic origins. The "Nine Bows" symbolize

the various peoples that had been ruled over by thepharaoh since Egypt was united.

The oldest indication for archery in Europe comes fromthe Stellmoor in the Ahrensburg valley north of Hamburg,Germany and date from the late Paleolithic about 9000-

8000 BC. At the end of the eighteenth century archery became

popular amongst the English gentry

From the 1920s, professional engineers took aninterest in archery, previously the exclusive field of traditional craft experts.[9]

By 1972, the great popularity of this sport brought
