Switch Mode Power Supplies

SWITCH MODE POWER SUPPLIESP LINE

The several Telecommunicationoperators, in their fight to offerevery day a better service to theend-users, they demand a powersupply with the maximum reliabi-lity, because a fault or bad mainscan make an interruption in theservices offered to the end-users.This is why, they must be guaran-teed by an equipment, which givesthis reliability supply. Nothing todo with the broadcast, baud rate, etc if the mains is not reliable. Apart nowadays, it is not enough toguarantee this energy, it is alsoneeded that the system givesvisually its main parameters.

Due to the above SALICRU ELEC-TRONICS, after its obtained expe-rience in power supply of countlessTelecommunication centres, bothnational and international and itsunderwritten knowledge by morethan 35 years offering solutions inthe electrical supply, presents itsnew Switch Mode Power Suppliesrange FAC P series to offer a defini-tive solution to the imperatives ofthe market where the Telecommu-nication Services suppliers are.

This new P series has all the solu-tions the nowadays the technologyoffers: efficient input/output filtrage, high frequency modulation contro-lled by a powerful microprocessorof last generation, double rectifica-tion, power factor corrector (PFC),input/output galvanic isolation, endof autonomy static switch, batterycharge with compensation of thefloating voltage by the temperature, real counter of the Ampere-hourdischarged, communication serialports for local and remote control, alarms control, as an option an effi-cient lightning arrestor, etc.

MAIN APPLICATIONS

Over the multiple applications inthe telecommunication systemsfield, which requires a DC powersupply, can be emphasised:

• Radio and phone access

• AMPS and D-AMPS(Advanced Mobile Phone

System)• TACS (Total Access System)

• GSM (Global System for MobileCommunication Services) • Cable TV

• Private digital switchboard (PABX)

• Thermic and nuclear power stationand special applications

• Mobile Services Switching Centres (MSC)

• Remote Subscriber Switching (RSS)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

• Radio Base Station (RBS)• Access nodes• PDH and SDH nodes (Synchronous

and Plesyochronous Digital hierarchy)

• Digital regeneration nodes• Central offices of Phone Switching

Network• Central offices of Switching

Centres• Paging systems• Redundant power systems N+1• Optical transmission• Main Switching Units (MSU)• Etc.

adjusted by the control of the equip-ment, although each rectifier modulehas its own mechanism of load sharing, which will be in operationin case of the Central Controllerdoesn’t exist. In this way, it is pos-sible to install several rectifiers inparallel although the control unitMS-102 is not present in the system.

Summarising, SALICRU ELECTRO-NICS shows a DC power supplysystem with high accuracy (±0.1%with charged batteries), intelligent, flexible, fault tolerance, high effi-ciency (>90%) and unity power fac-tor (PF ≥0.99).

The Switch Mode Power SuppliesP series are designed as compactequipment of 19” and Metric (sub-racks), available to be built in chas-sis enclosures in accordance withDIN 41494 standard, being able toconnect several units in parallel tillreach the required power rate.

Besides, it allows to design redun-dant operating systems accordingto the principle (n+1), or other (upto n+n), through an efficient out-put current sharing. Therefore, thefault of one (n+1) or more rectifiermodules will be covered by therest of them in operation, beingpossible to remove them for itsreparation (hot swapping) withoutneeding the shutdown of the sys-tem. Thanks to plug in modules, which makes easier the above.

The system can have batteries ofany type and technology, whichmakes possible to have an Uninte-rruptible DC power supply whereseveral optional can be added:Control module MS-102, input/bat-tery/output MCB protections, out-going distribution, etc.

The FAC systems of the P series

can have three or single phasemodules (up to 182 A per eachmodule), Central Controller MS-101, MCB protections, outgoingdistributions and battery racks. The DC output is within 12 and247.5Vdc with or without back up.

Nowadays, the maximum numberof modules in parallel for one sys-tem is 16, which allows to reach128kW of power.

The load sharing among the se-veral modules is supervised and

OPERATING PRINCIPLE

The Switch Mode Power SuppliesFAC range P series of SALICRUELECTRONICS transform the ACinput voltage, previously conditio-ned by EMI filter in a filtered andcontrolled DC voltage.

Through a high switching and highquality performance transistors, starting form a 385Vdc in the singlephase and 550Vdc in the threephase modules, it is generated, bya DC/DC converter an AC voltageof 40kHz, again rectified thanks tofast diodes and conditioned by anefficient filtered system.

A ferrite transformer operates athigh frequency and allows a galva-nic isolation within the input andoutput, and reduces the AC voltageto the required value to generatethe desired DC voltage.

The output voltage and current arecontrolled by a high frequencyswitching system of transistorslocated the primary transformer. Atthe output of each module there isa static switch, which disconnectsthe battery voltage at the minimumvoltage of battery discharge, inthose power supplies that haveback up. With this operating areavoiding irreversible damages inthe battery.

The vital constants of the equipmentare digitally controlled through amicroprocessor, which moreover isin charge of managing the adjus-tments and readings showed in theLCD panel.

OPERATING STATUS

Meanwhile the AC energy is present;the equipment supplies a cleanenergy, without perturbationscoming from the mains, like voltagetransients, voltage and frequency

fluctuations or distortions of anyvalue.

When there is a mains failure, cau-sed by perturbations, small or longblackouts, the load is supplied, inthis case by the battery. The dis-charging time will depend on thebattery capacity and load percentage. When the end of back up time isreached an audible alarm and aLCD message warns about theevent.

In the case that the system hasseveral modules in parallel, it willwork with the result to increasethe output power rate and/or tohave an operating redundancy.

COMMUNICATIONS

The P Series power supplies allowsan RS-232 or RS-485 communicationdepending on the application, whichthey are destined.

The RS-232 communication port isthe most suitable when it is neededdialog within the P series and anyIT system.

When the number of modules tocontrol is growing up or the com-munication is too long (up to 800m),the most suitable is the RS-485channel.

In systems configured to severalmodules in parallel, it is used theRS-485 to make the internal parallelbus between them and it is excludingthe RS-232 port. So, it is not possibleto have it, less than the system hasthe MS-102 management control.

The frontal panel of different FAC

modules P Series is implementedthrough a complete LCD panel, which allows the access to all thesetting menus of the system.

STANDARDS

is consuming a sinewave current(not pulsant) and in phase with themains (PF=1) avoids the harmonicre-injection to the mains.

• Specific software for charging Ni-Cdbatteries: During the discharge, itis possible to make an accuracycount of the discharged Watts, whichallows, in the charge process, tomake the exact charge of the dis-charged Watts (a part from therecommended by the manufacturer). This will make a low maintenance.

• All battery type is admitted. Alsoand depending on the environmentand operating temperature, thebattery floating voltage is adjustedautomatically in accordance to themanufacturer curve.

• Designed, manufactured and com-mercialised under ISO 9001 standards.

• Adjusted to EMC standards (Elec-tromagnetic Compatibility).

The switching mode power suppliesP series are distinguished by thefollowing special features, whichmake redundancy in several advan-tages over the traditional linearpower supplies or angle phase control(SCR):

• Compact and light design: lessweight and size.

••High efficiency, translated to higheconomy.

• High accuracy - <0.1% with batteriesfully charged – allowing a betterlevel of response which is veryvaluable in critical applications.

• Low inrush current, thanks to itssoft ramp starting.

• Great flexibility in power, allowingto reach high power rates.

• High scaling, up to 16 modules inparallel, thanks to the connectionparallel-redundant.

• Hot swap: due to have and input/output MCB, which allow to isolateelectrically the fault module withoutneeding to shutdown the system.

• Cooling, natural up to 2000W.

• Digital: All the adjustments aredone by the keypad of the moduleor the management control. Allowsserial communication, either in anear control room or in a remoteone (via modem).

• Low ripple level (<20mVpp).

• Protection against short-circuits,which increases its security level.

• Excellent dynamic behaviour.

• Power Factor Correction: Therecitifer has a PFC (Power FactorCorrection), which improves theefficiency of the installation becauseit is not needed any over-sizing inthe mains, MCB’s, etc. Besides, it
