Sydney Craft Week Festival 2019 - Program launch

Friday 11 October – Sunday 20 October

Sydney Craft Week festival returns for its third year,celebrating all things handmade across GreaterSydney for 10 days in October.

150+ events this year include: 37 exhibitions, 6 talks, 57workshops, 13 markets and retail events, 30 open studiosand 13 live demonstrations.

This community-led program is the only festival in Sydneydedicated to making by hand.

playful,” said Festival Directors Lisa Cahill and PennyCraswell.

An initiative of the Australian Design Centre, Sydney CraftWeek is supported by Government Partner City of Sydneywith a festivals and events sponsorship grant and also byPartners: Class Bento, Skein Sisters, Digital Press,Signwave, ArtsHub and FBi Radio.

About SCW Sydney Craft Week is an inspirational festival that speaksto our fundamental human urge to create, while alsoshowcasing exceptional contemporary craft.An initiative of the Australian Design Centre, this ten- dayfestival features a range of exhibitions, workshops, talksand open studios.

Sydney Craft Week unites the very active craft sectorwithin Sydney's creative community includingceramicists, jewellers, quilters, knitters and other textileartists, plus timber workers, print makers, leather crafters,Indigenous makers and creatives of all kinds who workwith their hands.

Theme The festival theme for Sydney Craft Week 2019 is PLAY.This is reflected in our choice of cover star for 2019,Vanessa Ion’s crocheted creation ‘Cynthia’ the AustralianWhite Ibis.

As part of the theme, we also asked contemporaryjeweller and educator Melinda Young to write about whatplay means for her. “Play is close to my heart and at thecentre of my practice,” said Melinda Young. “In the spiritof fun, play can mean making a space within creativepractice where outcomes are not important,” she said.

Craft Up Late Sydney Craft Week continues the celebrations into theevening with Craft Up Late. Running from 5 – 8pm overthree evenings in three different precincts, this programoffers the opportunity to visit 30+ venues in the evenings:

· Tuesday 15 October in Inner City Suburbs· Wednesday 16 October in Eastern Suburbs· Thursday 17 October in Inner West

Events will be held in 35+ suburbs this year:Darlinghurst, Sydney, Millers Point, Ultimo, Chippendale,Redfern, Waterloo, Rosebery, Bondi Beach, Paddington,Glebe, Camperdown, Annandale, Stanmore, Newtown,Marrickville, Dulwich Hill, St Peters, Tempe, Arncliffe,Burwood, Concord West, Milsons Point, North Sydney,Willoughby, Chatswood, Macquarie Park, Hornsby, NorthCurl Curl, Pittwater, Sans Souci, Gymea, Liverpool,Casula, Baulkham Hills, Thirroul, Mt Kiera, Central Coast(various locations), Gosford.

Sydney Craft Week Festival celebrates the Sydney craftcommunity, from professional artists to occasionalmakers, from those who love to make to those who wantto learn or purchase a handmade work to take home.

PLAYThis year, so many of our events reflect our theme, PLAY,including Commuter Craft – things to make on the move,a day out to Thirroul presented by Rumpus, with threemakers encouraging play through three different crafts.Mathematics collides with craft and play at ADC withSTEAMpop’s Playfold workshop for adults and kids over10. Visit Vanessa’s Ion latest playful crocheted sculpture,koala woman Gloria, as part of the installation Zoo Life.Kirsten Fredericks, well known for her cheeky knitted andcrocheted genitalia, brings her regular event Beers andBalls to Craft Up Late. Kirsten is your devoted crochetguide for this evening of playful wool therapy andcocktails. And contemporary textile artists, the Seed

program, including seven workshops and activities forkids being put on by The Japan Foundation, EdenUnearthed and Alison Thompson’s The Magic of theGarden, both at Eden Gardens in Macquarie Park, whileADC is hosting STEAMpop’s Playfold workshop. Kids arealso welcome to come along to a range of markets andexhibitions.
