Welcome!Welcome to our first craft event of 2015!

This year, we’re excited to bring you some pretty cool new twists on craft. Take a look at modern quilts with fresh designs that complement contemporary homes and are quick and easy to make.

Did you enjoy colouring-in as a child? The good news is that colouring-in for grown-ups is a huge trend internationally and as well as being fun, it’s relaxing and stress-reducing. What’s this about? Think gorgeous

detailed images printed in simple line drawings ready for you to colour with your art tool of choice – pencils, felt pens or watercolour paints. Instead of picking up a glass of wine at the end of the day, pick up a pencil! Weaving is back – simple woven wall hangings are very satisfying to make and are a great decorative feature in your home. And – I thought I’d never say it – but macramé is back in a big way as well!

Take a new look at crochet and learn to create sweet little floral brooches and necklaces.

If you haven’t tried quilling – using rolled paper strips to create three-dimensional designs, then I think you’ll be inspired to after you see the work of guest artist Christine Donehue.

The new costume and fashion designs in the Texstyle display are just one of the inspiring displays to enjoy plus there are hands-on classes in all things from decorating lampshades and shoes to stencilling, sewing, making bags and purses.

Come and kick start your creative year! See you there,

PS. Don’t forget to bring your handmade poppies to send to be part of the Anzac commemoration in April!

You could WIN great prizes!VALUED AT $3,126 BY VISITING THE SHOW!

To enter, complete the competition form you receive when you buy your ticket and put it in the barrel at the show. The winner will be drawn at the end of the last day of the event and the winner will be notified the following week. Texstyle designs! Make it modern!Bright, fresh and thoroughly modern quilts will be on display! Modern quilting is defined as having fresh colours and simple patterns or traditional blocks with a modern twist, young designers and old favourites, contemporary tools and techniques. While modern quilting is steeped in quilting tradition there are no rules, offering creative freedom, accessibility, and exciting new ideas.

The Greater Western Sydney Modern Quilt Guild is a vibrant and exciting group that was created to meet the needs

of local quilters keen to explore and develop the contemporary nature of modern quilting. Members love to share their expertise within the group and welcome all levels of quilters from beginners to advanced.

See bright, modern quilts at the show, including The Octagonal Orb challenge quilt – their first group challenge where members made a monochromatic block using a free pattern from the MQG website by Elizabeth Hartman. Also on show are works from two fabric challenges set by the International Modern Quilt Guild, their Charity Challenge Quilt plus a selection of other member quilts.

Be inspired by young designers’ creations at the show Exclusive to The Sydney Stitches & Craft Show - a special selection of 26 pieces from the 2014 HSC students of Textiles & Design. It’s the ONLY place you will see this stunning display in 2015!

5000 poppies!Help us create a wall of poppiesLynn Berry and Margaret Knight are on a mission to create a field of more than 100,000 handcrafted poppies in Federation Square, Melbourne on Anzac Day 2015 for the Centenary Anzac Commemoration.

They set what they thought was ‘a challenging but achievable target’ of 5,000 poppies back in June

2013. Since then, they have increased this first to 25,000 and finally to 100,000, as this phenomenal project has taken off like wildfire.

The show will feature a wall which you are invited to cover with your handcrafted poppies.

For further information on the project – and patterns – visit the blog, 5000poppies.wordpress.com and the 5000 poppies Facebook page.

Join the latest trend!

Enjoy the latest recreational activity!Colouring-in for adults is the latest craze – try it for yourself with our interactive murals using work by popular artist Johanna Basford.

The work is from her best-selling book, Secret Garden An Inky Treasure Hunt and Colouring Book, which features stunning illustrations of flowers, insects, birds and small animals. Originally published as a colouring book, crafters are

now using the designs as inspiration for embroidery and quilting designs too!

See Johanna’s artwork at the show in all its glory – and you can have a turn at colouring it in!

Johanna says; ‘I hand draw all my images, preferring pens and pencils to pixels. I delight in smudgy finger prints, wobbly hand penned lines and the odd ink blot, these little imperfections are what give drawings character, soul and that true sense of organic.’

Presented by Johanna Basford and Expertise Events.

An international textile art exhibition has landed in Australia and will be on display at the show. 50 small exhibition art quilts celebrate the SAQA group’s 25th anniversary and are one of eight trunk shows that are travelling the world until 2017.

Trunk Show G, which will tour Australia includes internationally renowned art quilters such as Dianne Firth (Australia), Hsin-Chen Lin (Taiwan), Alicia Merrett (England) and Cynthia St Charles (USA). The trunk show is a wonderful way to view and engage with quilts made using a wide variety of styles, techniques and fibres by many who are considered masters in their field.

SAQA is an international non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the art quilt and the artists who create them. SAQA is also a resource on all things art quilt related for both its members and the general public. Founded in 1989 by an initial group of 50 artists, SAQA members now number more than 3,000 artists, teachers, collectors, gallery owners, museum curators and corporate sponsors across the globe. A dedicated core of volunteers and staff keep the organisation vibrant, dynamic, and progressive.

Each work measures 25.4cm x 17.8cm (10in x 7in) and is part of SAQA’s third trunk show.
