At Oshwal Academy Nairobi Nursery, early years education targets the overall development of the child, which willassure a good start in life. The areas of child’s development targeted in the specific curriculum for early age, isphysical development, health, personal care, socio-emotional development, cognitive development, languagedevelopment and communication, developing skills and attitudes in learning are essential to achieve a customizededucation, by identifying the child’s potential and ability of each child by the teacher.

Our curriculum promotes the concept of global development of the child, considered to be central in early childhood. The perspective of global development of the child emphasizes the important areas of child development, considering that, in today's society, the learning of children for school and for life is taken into account not onlyacademic skills, but equally, abilities, skills, attitudes related to socio-emotional development (living and creatingpositive relationships.) Our online teaching and learning will ensure continuity of learning and consolidation ofdifferent concepts.

Importance of online learning

The reason to start the virtual learning for our learners is to continue what is at thecore of early childhood education and that’s relationships. We have effectively

planned the academic content and quality sessions to bond our learners with eachother and their teachers.”

Even though one can’t fully recreate the social bonds that learners make during faceto face learning, we have tried to maintain these relationships through a well designed

curriculum which is so very beneficial for our learners.

We believe that learning mustn’t stop for our learners. They will be given engagingplatforms to showcase their talent and creativity through various activities in this

term.

The curriculum orientation for parents was carried out for all year group classes. Every year group class was takenthrough the curriculum orientation by the Head of School -Nursery Campus Mrs Rooma Mali. Dear All,

“We know what we are, but we know not what we may be” by William Shakespeare This beautifulquote reminds us that our potential is infinite. We do not know what the future holds or how longschools will stay closed. But we can try to shape each day to be positive, creative and rewarding. This was the positive spirit felt at Senior High campus during the last three months. We wereambitious and trained the whole teaching staff on the use of Microsoft Teams for virtualteaching. Our students indeedare tech-savvy.

We have now started new academic year with the same spirit. In one week already - the sameenthusiasm and excitement is felt in one and all. Our belief is that we can emerge from thisdifficult time with a better and more fulfilling way of educating our children. We all look forwardto a productive new academic year.

As we look forward to the start of a new academic term and welcoming our new students, I wish to thank allthe Oshwal staff for the resilience and hard work they put in. Last term was a great season of virtual learning andthe school recorded great success in academic and non-academic programmes. I believe we are all prepared tomake the learning experience even better this term.

I wish to reflect on the achievement of our students in the IGCSE, AS & A LEVEL (CAIE), GCE/IAL Edexcelexaminations.

We celebrate the hard work of all our learners; each of them worked diligently. Our sincere appreciation goes toour students, supportive parents, OAM staff, the OERB (Oshwal Education and Relief Board) and the SchoolManaging Committee (SMC) and for these results. I wish you a term full of success.

Head of School OAM,Ms. Jackline Aming’a.

Early in April this year, in just a matter of days, our teachers had to go fully virtual with no prior experience withvirtual learning and, like teachers around the country, they had to learn.

As educators, our success will be defined by our most important stakeholders: our students. Whether learningonline or in the traditional set up, we aim to still achieve the learning objective of each unit. The school puts inplace teaching practices and emerging innovations that aim to shape quality learning in our virtual classroomssuch as, maintaining relatively small groups to create an atmosphere which allows learners to really get to knowtheir teachers and follow up tasks recorded and submitted as evidence of learning. Some of the most recentaccomplishments also include, holding conferences with parents online and online assessments.

Our classrooms have evolved into a hub of technological advances especially for our senior classes. Sciencepracticals are now being conducted online as well as math lessons, physical education, debate and other trainingprogrammes.

This new shift will definitely change the learning environment when the traditional mode of learning commences. We believe through this time our learners and staff have been able to learn new skills. We have received varying sentiments from our learners and parents regarding their preference of the currentmode of learning versus the traditional method all in all, we believe there is always something to learn.

Oshwal Academy Mombasa held its first-ever virtual graduation ceremony on the 10th and 12th, August 2020. Theevent was celebrated amid the COVID-19 pandemic that has crippled contemporary learning. On this special andunique occasion, students and their families gathered that evening as they waited for the first ever virtualgraduation by OAM. The ceremony was graced by the Head of School, Ms. Jackline Aming’a and SMC (SchoolManagement Committee) chairman, Mr. Kirti Shah.

The Head of school urged the A-Level graduates to seek new opportunities from the experience gathered during thenew normal. In her speech she also quoted the book by Thomas Friedman, Thank you for being late: “When the paceof change gets this fast, the only way to retain a lifelong working capacity is to engage in lifelong learning.”

“Dear graduands, as you all move to the different phases, remember to appreciate the humans you meet along theway. Nothing can authentically replace the human touch. App developers are yet to develop one where you candownload a person. Until then, enjoy the friendships and the family moments, for these are core to our overall well-being,” said the Head of School.

Equally, Mr. Kirti Shah used the opportunity to appreciate the students, parents and the OAM staff for the tirelesseffort in making the journey a great success. “I take this opportunity to congratulate each of our graduands and wishthem well for the future. We have all witnessed rapid progress of technological inventions and often what you learnbecomes redundant under the onslaught of new discoveries.

The literates of today’s world are not those who can read and write but are those who can learn, unlearn and thenrelearn”, said the chairman. We are incredibly proud of all our graduates. Congratulations class of 2019 - 2020!

in addition, possession of these skills is now a prerequisite for effective learning in both face-to-

face and online learning environments. Students with computer and digital skills find it easy to

use the technology and are competent in searching and using information for effective learning.

Currently, with most educational institutions moving to e-learning, these skills are considered the

most critical enablers of learning and delivery.

At Oshwal College, we offer these skills through our globally recognised certifications such as

International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) and Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS). ICDL is

the Leading International computer skills certification program which was gazetted in Kenya as

the official entry level computer certification designed to demonstrate competence in computer

use. It consists of modules which define the skills and competencies necessary to be a proficient

user of a computer and common computer applications. As a result, employers around the world

regard ICDL as a benchmark in IT user competence.

On the other hand, MOS certification demonstrates that you have the skills needed to get the

most out of Microsoft Office. In other words, the certification guarantees that you understand the

full features and functionality of Microsoft Office.

Holding a Microsoft Office Specialist certification demonstrates your readiness for future

academic or workforce opportunities and can guarantee you a higher pay than your uncertified

peers.

If you are intending to advance your computer and digital skills, look no further. At Oshwal

College, we have an ICT faculty with years of hands-on experience in the delivery of computer

related certification courses. We are also an accredited ICDL and Certiport Test Centre;

meaning our ability to deliver the ICDL and MOS courses is unrivaled. Enrolment into these

programmes is open to anyone seeking to be relevant in the digital era. Whether in high school,

college, university or in the workplace, ICDL and MOS will offer you the skills needed to meet

the demands of work and study in the 21st century.

We’re living in a fast-paced world where technological and digital

devices are being used in almost all areas of life. It doesn’t

matter what type of work you’re doing, you’re likely to make use

of a computer or other digital device. Whether you work for a

small enterprise, a large corporation or from home, a computer

will be one of the first pieces of office equipment you’re going to

require.

Therefore, in order to increase your chance of employability and

boost your productivity at work, you need to upskill and refine

your computer and digital skills. In fact, computer literacy has

become a mandatory requirement in almost every workplace

and for any type of job. At the moment, it is difficult to find a job

that doesn’t involve a computer in some way and therefore, by

gaining recognised computer skills you will stand out in the job

market.
