2017 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal Offering hands to serve and hearts to love
THANK YOU! Because of your generosity, as of April 25, we are 98% towards our BLA goal of $285,000. Bishop Burbidge reminds us, "The BLA is the primary channel by which our Diocese reaches out through various programs and ministries to help people who are in spiritual, emotional or physical need. Caring for the poor and vulnerable, teaching our children the rich faith traditions of our Church, sharing the joy of the Gospel with others and supporting men who will one day be our priests are all components that, with the grace of God, help us to advance the mission of Jesus Christ in our Diocese." Please reflect on your blessings and consider joining in support of the BLA. Every pledge is important! https://www.arlingtondiocese.org/Bishops-Lenten-Appeal-2017/ Thank you and God bless.

From Our Pastor “How good it is for us to pray together. How good it is to encounter one another...where we see one another as brothers and sisters, where we realize that we need one another. Today I want to be one with you. I need your support, your closeness. I would like to invite you to pray together, for one another, with one another. That way we can keep helping one another to experience the joy of knowing that Jesus is in our midst, and that Jesus helps us to find solutions to the injustices which He Himself already experienced.” Pope Francis Dear Friends, as I mentioned in an email just before Easter, I want to share with you an opportunity for us to come together as community. One of the
most effective ways we have to offer encouragement, solace or aid to one another is through prayer. Prayer unites us and reminds us of a beautiful truth which we sometimes forget: God is truly our ‘Father’ and we, His family. Prayer, as Pope Francis so beautifully states, allows us to "encounter one another." We are more than just place holders in a pew; we are a faith community. This is why I have asked my staff to design a vehicle on our website for prayer requests. The format is simple: click the button “Prayer Request” and you will be directed to a private email which the on-call priest will monitor. You will receive a response and your request will be included in the prayers of our priests at Saint James. As your pastor, I do not want anyone to feel they must face challenges alone. I often hear from overwhelmed parishioners who have no one to talk to or to lend them a helping hand, such as giving them a break from caregiving for some personal time or even to go for a walk. At the same time, I hear from many parishioners who would love to offer this kind of assistance if they could only connect with someone. If a prayer request asks for something tangible like this, we will do all we can to assist. We also have an incredible group of homebound parishioners who offer daily prayers from our Prayer Request boxes located at all the exits of the Church or from phone calls to the rectory. It gives me great joy to know that our parishioners use their prayers to help someone who needs spiritual support. This technological “outreach” hopefully will yield more personal interaction. Our goal is that this vehicle will contribute toward building a stronger community. Please let us know if you need an extra prayer sent your way. I also ask that you keep the priests, deacons, sisters and all of the people of St. James in your prayers as well. Pope Francis once again says it more eloquently than I: “I think this is truly the most wonderful experience we can have: to belong to a people walking, journeying through history together with our Lord, who walks among us! We are not alone; we do not walk alone. We are part of the one flock of Christ that walks together.” ~Fr. Posey

Save the date for our celebratory
Mass & Reception with Bishop Burbidge on Sunday, May 21 at the noon Mass!
This year we are celebrating our 125th anniversary with events, our oral history project and a weekly history lesson in our bulletin! Return here to relive our growth from a small frame
church to our present iconic building which is home to thousands of parishioners.
The Most Reverend Peter L. Ireton, Bishop of Richmond, conducted the Dedication Ceremony of the new St. James School on October 10, 1948. The dedication address was made by Msgr. Edward B. Jordan, Vice Rector of Catholic University. The cornerstone marks the dates of both the original 1905 school building and the new school blessed in 1948. The cost of the new building was $250,000. The school opened with an enrollment of 500 students. However, between the time of the construction of the first two classrooms in 1944 and the dedication of the new school in 1948, it was obvious that the facility was still too small to accommodate the growing Catholic population. Once again Father Mullarkey looked towards expansion. However, these years of material expansion did not distract Father Mullarkey and the IHM Sisters from their intense interest in the quality of the children’s education. The year 1949 was a milestone year in several respects: a Kindergarten was established in the little white house formerly occupied by Villa Maria Academy; the first lay teacher was hired; the CYO was established; and in May the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary celebrated their Silver Jubilee of teaching at St. James Parish.

Pro-Life Ministry Update
In his January 22 bulletin article, Fr. Posey encouraged each of us to participate in activities that promote and defend all life. “We do this because our support must go beyond just telling people not to abort, but to be there to help the person choose to give birth: through prayer, encouragement and practical assistance.”
We help through prayer… The sidewalk was crowded with people who joined Bishop Burbidge to pray the rosary in front of the local abortion center, after the bishop led a pro-life mass at St. James, on April 22. You may also join prayer novenas through Priests for Life (http://www.priestsforlife.org) Participate in the monthly tri-lingual Rosary (English/Spanish/Latin) on May 16 (Tuesday) at 7:00 PM in front of the Falls Church Healthcare Center, 900 South Washington Street. The tri-lingual Rosary will take place the third Tuesday of each month.
We help through action... The St. James Pro-Life Committee meets the first Thursday of each month at 7:30 PM. The next meeting is Thursday, May 4 in the School Library.
Preborn Baby Facts: At twenty weeks old an unborn baby is 11 inches and weighs about 1 pound. Lips, eyelids, and eyebrows can now be seen distinctly. The baby keeps her eyes closed, but she now has completely formed eyes underneath her eyelids.
Do Not Leave Your Personal Property Unattended Thefts have been reported at a nearby parish. The thieves took cash out of unattended purses during Communion. To remove temptation, please do not leave your personal property unattended. Thank you!
Baby Bottles for HOPE The weekend of May 6-7, 2017, volunteers will be at each church door to hand out empty baby bottles. On Mother’s Day weekend, May 13-14, volunteers will be at the door to collect bottles that you have generously filled with change or check or cash. Your children may want to get involved too, with helping to fill the bottles. Please encourage them to do so. The people of St. James have been very supportive of Hope in Northern Virginia. Located at 610 Park Avenue, HOPE provides support to any woman in need during and up to two years after the birth of a child. Over 500 women turned to HOPE last year and thousands more, since its founding over 40 years ago. We accept donations of baby items, diapers, maternity clothes and gift cards to give to struggling families. More details about HOPE are available at www.hopehousenova.org.
