T001.01 Building Area: (sf) 3,500 sqft Original date of completion: 1971 Location of Project: Island in the Gulf of Mexico Type of Project: Residential Construction materials, mechanical systems or other pertinent information: Standard wood construction Exterior and interior walls and ceilings of bleached cider Sliding walls of clear glass Overhangs for sun protection Program Requirements: This Beach House, which is tied to the Earth retains its original use as a retreat from the northern winters. No changes have been made in the house, which still fulfills the clients’ original request made over thirty years ago — “An informal beach house which opens wide to the water and becomes part of the tropical environment” ( Record Houses 1972 ). Located at the sand dune, this Florida Beach House of sun- bleached wood wraps back and forms a large Courtyard on the side away from the water. The Main House is a raised platform with views diagonally up and down the narrow beach, the Gulf of Mexico, and back inland to the Garden Courtyard. The long, low Guest House and stucco garden walls which start at the Main House and continue around the site complete the Compound. The site is on a small remote island in the Gulf of Mexico. The strong character of existing residences is that of low Compounds - walled properties with heavy planting concealing the buildings. The Site fronts onto the narrow crescent-shaped Beach with spectacular views of the Gulf. From the Main House, the full view of water gives the feeling of a ship. The living area and the master bedroom look to the Gulf; the dining room faces the morning sun and becomes part of the Garden Courtyard. From the Guest House are views of the Garden Courtyard with its terrace of beach sand. Increasing the flow of inside to outside – sun-bleached wood throughout the interior and exterior, varying roof levels which allow unexpected sun penetration, unexpected areas – as the hidden seating behind the fire place, the roof terrace… Wood decks extend the living areas while reaching out to embrace the Site.

This Beach House, which is tied to the Earth retains its original use as a retreat from the northern winters. No changes have been made in the house, which still fulfills the clients’ original request made over thirty years ago — “An informal beach house which opens wide to the water and becomes part of the tropical environment” ( Record Houses 1972 ).

Located at the sand dune, this Florida Beach House of sun-bleached wood wraps back and forms a large Courtyard on the side away from the water.

Increasing the flow of inside to outside – sun-bleached wood throughout the interior and exterior, varying roof levels which allow unexpected sun penetration, unexpected areas – as the hidden seating behind the fire place, the roof terrace…

Wood decks extend the living areas while reaching out to embrace the Site.
