What are some of the best ways tomonitor and remove nutrients from my wastewater?Removal of nitrogen and phosphorus is becoming more common, and the operation of nutrient removal systems can be difficult tounderstand. Small problems must be identified quickly.

Hach provides on-line instrumentation for real-time continuousmonitoring, including:

    • NITRATAX™ sc Nitrate sensor—Monitors ammonia concentrationswith convenient CartriCal™ system

    • NH4D sc Ammonia probe—Monitors ammonia concentrationswithout reagents

    • PHOSPHAX sc Phosphate analyzer—Controls chemical dosing ormonitors the Bio-P process

    • UVAS sc Organics probe—Controls dosing of VFAs from fermentedprimary sludge

    • Differential pHD ORP probe—Helps you understand the biggerpicture of the process

Are there ways I can optimize my solids management? Poor wasting can cause problems with the biomass and with thedigesters. Knowing the location and quantity of solids ensures propertreatment. Incorrect blanket levels can indicate settleability problems, and high effluent suspended solids will increase the phosphorusdischarged in the effluent, creating a greater possibility of exceedingpermit levels.

Hach SOLITAX sc and SONATAX sc probes offer:

    • Real-time monitoring, allowing for early detection of upsetconditions

    • Measurement of SRT, automatic wasting control, and effluentsuspended solids monitoring

    • Control of sludge concentration to digesters

Reducing costs and saving energy are a priority for my company. How can Isave money in my wastewater process? Hach can help you reduce the costs associated with keeping effluentin compliance. For example, two of the critical variables for effectivewastewater process control are chemical treatment and mechanicalaeration. The costs for chemical treatment are clear, but the costs ofenergy required for aeration, sometimes 70% of a facility’s energycosts, are often overlooked. Process control based on water qualityinputs is the most efficient means of controlling both chemicaltreatment and the energy required for mechanical aeration.

    Key measurements include:

    • Dissolved Oxygen (DO)—Hach LDO® Probe

    • Total Suspended Solids/Turbidity—SOLITAX™ sc probe

    • UV Organics—UVAS sc probe

    • pH—pHD Differential pH Sensors

How can I identify variances in mywater before they become costlyproblems? Hach’s line of water quality instruments includes on-line wateranalysis tools that monitor your water in real time. Our family ofprocess instruments allows you to detect and correct processcontamination that you might not otherwise see with spot checks.Ultimately, this enhanced visibility into your process will save youmoney.

    On-line tools include:

    • sc100 and sc1000 universal controllers for use with our digital sensor family:

  • Can you give me some tips forcorrosion control?A number of process conditions cause corrosion of metals in boilerand cooling system pipes and supporting structures. These includeinadequate pH control, inadequate deaeration in feedwater, thepresence of contaminants, improper feedrates (corrosion inhibitors, antiscalants, or pH adjustment chemicals), and/or microbiologically-induced corrosion (cooling water).

Monitoring specific parameters helps provide information to control the system chemistry:

    • pH—8362 sc High Purity pH/ORP Systems or pHD Digital pH Sensors

    • Oxidation reduction potential (ORP)—8362 sc High Purity ORP

    • Conductivity—Hach/GLI Contacting Conductivity/ResistivitySensors and Inductive (Electrodeless) Sensors

    • Dissolved Oxygen (DO)—G1100 Trace Oxygen Sensor (ppb)

    • Silica in high pressure boilers—Series 5000 Silica Analyzer

    • Sodium in high pressure boilers—9245 On-line Sodium Analyzer

    • Chlorine—CL17 Free or Total Residual Chlorine Analyzer

    • Chlorine (Free & Total)—Pocket Colorimeter™ II

Scaling is a continual problem in my system. What can I do?Inadequate removal of dissolved minerals causes scaling andreduces heat transfer efficiency. To minimize scaling, water softeners or scale inhibitors may be used in pre-treatment. Scalingcan also be controlled by reducing the total dissolved solids (TDS) via boiler or cooling tower blowdown. Monitor blowdown bymeasuring conductivity (TDS) or other specific process solids such as silica, a common contaminant carried over in steam to the turbine or process. If you’re using phosphate to inhibit the formationof scale, monitoring this parameter helps ensure proper feed rates.

    Key measurements include:

    • Conductivity—Hach/GLI Contacting Conductivity/ResistivitySensors and Inductive (Electrodeless) Sensors

    • Hardness, lab or pretreatment process—SP510 or APA 6000™Hardness Analyzer

EPA-Approved MethodsThe EPA has evaluated and approved new technological methodsdeveloped by Hach Company. All EPA-Approved methods are citedin the Federal Register and compiled in the Code of FederalRegulations at 40 CFR 136 and CFR 141.

EPA-Accepted MethodsThe EPA has reviewed Hach methods and accepted them for use incompliance monitoring. These methods are defined by EPA asAcceptable versions of previously approved methods. Thesemethods are generally not published in the Federal Register or in theCode of Federal Regulations. A facsimile of the EPA- Acceptanceletter is available upon request.

Hach Equivalent MethodsAll EPA-Approved methods have specification criteria built into theirprocedural steps. When an approved or accepted EPA method hasbeen packaged by Hach from the EPA reference method as a testmethod that meets or exceeds these specification criteria, thesemethods are deemed to be equivalent for use in EPA compliancemonitoring (40 CFR 136.6). EPA does not normally issue equivalenceletters of packaged reference methods. Hach maintains theformulation, procedure, and data demonstrating equivalency and isavailable upon request.

Hach Approved Methods These methods may be used for compliance monitoring. They haveeither obtained an EPA Approval or Acceptance letter, or the methodis a packaged product that follows an EPA Reference method and isdeemed Equivalent by Hach. With any method used for compliancereporting, always consult with your local regulatory authority.

Hach has more EPA approvedmethods than any othersupplier!
