WELCOME MESSAGE

Dear Delegates

Welcome to the World Micromachine Summit in São Paulo and Campinas. This is our 20th summit and so

it deserves a special commemoration. We would first like to congratulate all who contributed to the

successful history of two decades of yearly summits. These summits have contributed to the interchange

of ideas and knowledge, approaching countries/regions, institutions and people to the benefit of society.

This is also the first time the summit is taking place in Latin America, integrating this region into this

international effort. Although the region had a late start in R&D activities in this area, it is receiving

increasing support and obtaining corresponding scientific results. These results, as measured by

publications, have grown steadily over the last decades. Also, many industrial initiatives occurred in the

region, including the establishment of semiconductor foundries and packaging houses, in addition to IC

and system design houses and so forth. The region, with a population of over 500 million inhabitants,

represents a large and increasing market for consumer and professional systems.

MMS2014 is composed of two days of plenary sessions, including region/country reports, technical paper

presentations and a panel session. These two days will happen in São Paulo, while and additional technical

tour is scheduled for visiting R&D centers in Campinas.

The MMS2014 happens just a month before the start of Soccer World cup in Brazil. This is the first time

that electronics sensing will support the judge of the game about his judgments and scoring, representing

a nice example of the application of sensors and micromachining to sports.

Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to all delegates, sponsors, organizing committee members

for all the support we received to fulfill the challenge of organizing the MMS2014 for the first time in Latin

America. We look forward to having a memorable and fruitful summit. Welcome to MMS2014 and enjoy

your stay in São Paulo and Campinas.
