Cut, piece and press your way to success with the Venetian Tile block. These techniques are the foundation for all award-winning quilts and can be put to use later in any block, sashing or border. Students will receive and discuss a hand-out, “Judging Criteria for Piecing” which describes what to avoid, and what results to strive for in piecing a quilt.

About Beverly “I made a simple nine-patch quilt for a friend while I was in high school, but I didn’t become a dedicated quilter until 1996. I didn’t know then that it would change the direction of my life, but I soon learned that it was impossible to make only ONE quilt!” “I became a National Quilting Association Certified Judge in 2003. Becoming a judge was a natural extension of my geeky tendency to research and study. I feel strongly that a judge ought to have done most every technique that comes across her judging table. My judging philosophy is to recognize creativity and the appropriate skills to bring it to life. I hope to encourage all quiltmakers and guide them toward the best possible choices to develop their ideas.” www.beverlyfine.com

In this introductory class, students will explore the website www.spoonflower.com. Spoonflower is a digital printing company that prints photographs onto fabric. There will be in-depth demonstrations of how to upload your photos and the many options for editing using the Spoonflower site. Students will enjoy a lot of play time to manipulate their images for possible printing at a later date. Due to the fact that there is currently no mobile app for Spoonflower, students will need to use a laptop computer in class. No tablets or iPads. **Note: No Photoshop experience is necessary as we will only be dealing with photo editing through the Spoonflower site.

Supply List

*A laptop computer with all power cords and accessories for operation. Note: Flash must be enabled to edit your photos in the Spoonflower software. *Extension cord and power strip *Several photos saved on your laptop (.jpg format) that you would like to edit and manipulate. *Set up an account on www.spoonflower.com so that you are ready to log in and upload images. *A notebook and pen/pencil for taking notes

About Kevin

Kevin Womack is a textile artist living in Lynchburg, Virginia. While majoring in the sciences at James Madison University, he satisfied his strong interest in the arts by including several elective art courses as part of his studies. Kevin earned his bachelor ’s degree in Computer Science and went to work in the IT field. He continued his artist pursuits, exploring photography, metals/jewelry, pottery and oil painting in community art classes. In 1986, Kevin was introduced to quilting by his maternal grandmother. Having always loved the legacy of family quilts, he decided to have her teach him the tradition. While his interest in other media has waned, his passion for fiber has endured. Over the years, Kevin studied with many accomplished textile artists and developed a love for hand dyeing and patterning fabrics with surface design techniques. His experiments produce a line of unique fabrics and clothing that he exhibits and sells. Kevin ’s artwork and quilts have been exhibited at several local and regional shows. His recent collaborative work with artist Eleanor McCain was selected for inclusion in the Quilt National ‘13 exhibition and Quilt Visions Bien-nial 2014. In addition to his fabric business, Kevin teaches and lectures nationally. KevinWomackArt.com

She has been sewing for many years, and has done hand work, knitting, needlepoint, garments, reenactment clothing and home décor sewing. She was introduced to quilting when she saw many bright, contemporary quilts hanging in a fabric store. Her first quilting class was in 2001 at Jinny Beyer’s Studio. The many that followed taught her new techniques and introduced her to the world of quilters. Carolyn loves helping others with design, colors and fabric choice, and sharing her passion for quilting. Carolyn joined Haymarket QU in 2012 where she has held many positions including President.

About Bonnie Bonnie was an elementary school teacher and college-level administrator. After retiring, she enjoyed many different artistic pursuits — pottery, basket making, mosaics — but is now concentrating on quilting. She likes learning new quilting techniques from friends, attending workshops and classes, and reading books. It is a joy for her to share those new skills and techniques with others. She belongs to both Haymarket and Annandale QU chapters where she has held many positions including Treasurer and Vice President.

About Jane Jane has been piecing quilts for about 20 years. It wasn't until 2009, when she discovered Longarm quilting, that quilting then became her passion. She started free motion quilting on a domestic machine, then a Handi Quilter Sweet Sixteen and then a Handi Quilter Avante. She still enjoys using all of these machines. Jane is a self-taught Longarm quilter that specializes in custom free motion quilting. She is an award-winning quilter who has developed a love for sharing her knowledge of quilting with other quilters. She enjoys teaching as a Handi Quilter National Educator and on her own at quilt shops and National quilt shows. Jane's philosophy is that no matter what type of machine one uses (domestic, short-arm or Longarm), anyone can learn to custom quilt. Her goal when teaching is to equip each student with as much information and knowledge as possible. Jane resides on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

About Joyce

Joyce is an award-winning, self-taught quilter and fiber artist. Her first quilt was a tee-shirt quilt, which she enjoyed making, but felt limited in the ability to express her artistic capabilities. Within several months, she began to design pictorial landscape quilts using raw edge applique, thread painting, and a variety of embellishments. Never knowing the "rules,” she broke a lot them, but with exciting results! Amazingly, her first art quilt, "Mother's Day", was entered into a national show and won a Blue Ribbon. This has led to numerous awards, recognitions and opportunities in the quilting world. One proud accomplishment of Joyce’s, in October, 2012, was her selection as "McCall's Quilt Designer 2012 - Professional Category" for McCall's Quilting Magazine. Joyce loves to free motion quilt and thread paint. Currently, she has been working with fabric panels to create dimension and texture with threads and embellishments— creating a style of her own! Joyce loves to teach and share her tips. One of her greatest accomplishments is when a student creates their own art work following her technique of Dimensional Thread Painting!

Each project utilizes the inclusion of negative space to your draw attention. Deb will teach rapid construction techniques to help you finish your project in record time. All three quilts are small. All skill levels. These projects will stretch your creativity.
